Hello!!! Sorry that this is so long. I got very excited and wanted to share my feelings on your different fics I have read!
I also wanted to say that I am different from the last anon but I also have been reading through your backlog and have now read every fic with Law in it. (plus some) I love your characterisation of the characters and its a treat to have so much wonderful writing to read!
First! I am loving Ad Astra already! Shachi and Penguin being part fishman seems to fit them very well. I legit thought it might be canon I hadn't seen yet because it fit so well. (i'm currently in Wano!) Haha! I love the idea of a sci-fi AU! I wasnt sure how it would work at first but reading it, it somehow works very well! Excited to read more!
Also I love Law's casual use of his devil fruit. I noticed he doesnt use it much in the other fics you wrote. Which made sense of course because in Crown of Flowers he was hiding it and similar in Losing Time and We Hide Our Hearts. So it's nice to see a Law who doesn't have to hide it and even uses it to mess around with his crew.
Losing Time made me love the Hearts even more! And each of them felt like their own person. Ikkaku I am particularly fond of! I also love how you wrote the Trafalgars! They felt very real and I miss them dearly. I wonder how their alternate world will go with such a different ending? And the grown up Law felt like he had really changed and learned from his experience. By the end of it he hardly felt like canon but in a good way. Like how I could see canon going towards if he had to face the same things. Healing in his own way. The bittersweet goodbye he had with his parents hurts my heart in the best possible way. The whole fic made me think deeply about what I would do if I was given a chance to go back to my own past as I am now. Wonderful read.
A Crown of Flowers is probably my favourite AU. I even wrote part of a mini fic based on it. I will likely not finish it but still. The world building is fantastic. I am already a fan of immortal creatures but this made it even better! The thought of being forced into immortality is terrifying as a concept and works wonderful for the fic. I wish I could draw because I'd love to draw how I imagine Eustass and Law in their Gentry forms! The last chapter being so far in the future felt a bit bittersweet. The POV being Doffy was perfect too because you got to feel just as confused as he was coming back to things! Of course hearing all the wonderful things the boys did was fantastic. You know they had to go through loss and pain and they never asked for the job they got stuck with but they made the best of it. Being reassured that they kept moving forward despite it all is so wholesome ;v;
We Hide Our Hearts was the fic I found you from! Someone on Twitter said it was the best Cora lives fic they read and I have to agree! Cora's characterisation legit made me love the character even more than I already did. He's clever as much as he is kind and feels very human. Garp in the fanfic was also amazingly written! Every time he showed up I got excited to see what he'd do. His talk with little Law felt so very him. He's knows what people need to hear in the same way Luffy does. Just as stubborn as Luffy as well. The ending of the fic being left open made me imagine so many possibilities of what could happen next to the little band of misfits. Cora has his work cut out for him for sure!
We Set Our Wishes Upon Her Waters is not a long fic like the others but still a great AU! I loved reading about each character and their relation to their sea. Cora's section was heartbreaking ;v; Each of the seas are written so well! I especially love the idea that Kid and Killer have other names and the names they use now they picked themselves. Because I can't imagine anyone naming their kid "Killer."
Last mention. Threnody for the Living was my favourite one off. Brook felt so much like Brook that I could imagine his voice clearly each time he spoke! I never thought I needed Brook and Law interacting but it was a very pleasant surprise duo and now I want them to be friends.
Anyways before this gets longer, Thank you for all your writing! It has truly been a gift to read and I am excited for future works! -Overly Excited Anon
Oh my goodness, do not apologize! This is amazing!
Your notes about Ad Astra are spot on: Law will be using his devil fruit more freely in this fic, because you were correct; in the other fics you cited him using it sparingly it was in fact a conscious choice on my part. I am eagerly anticipating getting to let him be more of a menace with it this time around.
As for Penguin and Shachi, I am not personally a believer in the theory that they are part fishmen--at least not without more canon evidence than we have--but it fits so much better with this setting that I had to give it a try this go round.
Losing Time is a direct result of my desire to give more focus to characters I knew wouldn't get the chance in the series proper: the Hearts and Law's family both. Backstory characters in particular tend to get the short end of the stick, and it seemed to me such a shame when what happened to Law's family was such a pivotal, formative moment for him. Granting some closure to the situation was cathartic.
I am deeply proud of the worldbuilding in Crown of Flowers, and I do have very strong mental images of what all the boys look like in every stage of their existence in my head, but sadly I do not have the artistic skills to execute it. I would be interested in the fic you wrote inspired by it, though! I'm honored you found it inspirational enough.
Hearing someone say Hearts was the best Cora Lives fic they've read is astounding to me, because there are so many good ones out there. I am obligated to recommend pretty much anything @oswaldthatendswald has written, if you have not read their works already. If Cora being alive and being a complex, interesting character is your jam, you will find it there in spades.
We Set Our Wishes on Her Waters was my first real AU and the one that will continue to be worked on slowly in the background for...I hesitate to say forever, but for the foreseeable future for certain. I have at least two or three more stories planned in that universe already.
Lastly, I am so glad to hear you like Threnody. That is one of the one shots I am most proud of, from the musical theme to the emotions. Hearing it get some love is always a treat.
Thank you so much again for your lovely comments. I'll be thinking about this for some time.
