“As stated in her will, it is an inheritance with a condition. The Seeker’s Inn is willed to Miss Alexandra Jekyll to run successfully for a full season. Deemed successful, it will be hers to keep and a sum of five thousand pounds will be released to help with the expenses. Fail and it shall go to the next interested relative to run for his full season and so on and so forth. If there are no other claimants to run the inn, the property will be sold and the sum divided to her charities as will the five thousand pounds.” Mr. Rhodes, the solicitor said.
“A test? Aunt Emily is testing her? What about me?” Dunstan demanded.
Mr. Rhodes sighed. “I would inform you if she failed. Should Ms. Jekyll succeed, you would still be informed after the season.”
“Why must she be the first to be tested? This is Aunt Emily’s inn! I grew up here. Surely she would want me to have the first go.” Mr. Pompous demanded.
“Mrs. Norwoods has regretted not coming to Miss Jekyll’s aid. Although she only learned of their existence recently, she wanted them to have the first opportunity.” Mr. Rhodes explained. “She wished to leave something to Ms. Jekyll even if it was only a chance at having the inn.”
“That seems pretty straightforward. I shall run it for a full season then and it shall be mine.” Alexandra Jekyll said.
“So I do get a chance still. Who deems it successful?” Dunstan asked. He was not satisfied with the will but it had a clause. Alexandra began to feel wary about the man. This pompous dandy just might get the inn and she’d be left with nothing.
“Aunt Emily has selected a panel of secret judges from neighbors, guests and visitors. I, myself is included in this panel and is the only judge known to you. None of the innkeepers shall know of the identities of the other judges. They will have their own criteria on evaluation.” Mr. Rhodes said.
“Then I shall return after the season to take over.” Dunstan announced.
“What makes you think you shall take over the inn?” Alexandra asked. She was affronted. “I, sir, will run this inn successfully for the season and keep it.”
“Ha, you don’t even know the first thing about inns! I practically grew up here. I’ll run it successfully just as Aunt Emily had. Expect me when this season is over.” He said.
“Why you pompous tom tuck! Just you wait!” Alexandra was so angry. This man dared to insult her. She would show him. She was going to run this inn better than what it used to be.
“I’ll be back at the end of your season to begin mine. In the mean time, I’m going home to collect my staff.”
“A moment, Mr. Draycott. I forgot to mention Aunt Emily’s clause on running the inn. She states that the inn be run by yourself and family members only during this trial season. No outside help will be taken except for Mr. Latimer and Mrs. Cook who are fixtures in the Seeker’s Inn.” Mr. Rhodes said.
“So I am to host, staff and look after my own inn?” Dunstan paused to think. The look on Dunstan Draycott’s face seemed comical. It was evident that he did not fancy the idea of scrubbing, taking up the trunks and looking after his guests.
“It was the way your aunt ran the inn. It will be the confines of your test.” Mr. Rhodes said. “She states in her will that the Seeker’s Inn be as it is, will be run by only family and not by outsiders.”
“Fine. I shall be back.”
