"The automaton marks the dream of a neoliberal world order: a paragon of economic productivity and efficiency for global capital and, tellingly, a figure devoid of race or sex, devoid of racial difference or sexual desire. Moreover, the automaton, like the replicants of Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, is a figure without history. With no past, present or future, the robot is not only about efficiency without sex but also outside lived histories of oppression—that is, outside histories of institutionalized racism and homophobia and without the sticky liabilities of social difference and demands. As such, the automaton is a made-to-order witness for a neoliberal economic world order, marking a new form of racial and sexual exclusion in a colorblind and multicultural world precisely by having no relation whatsoever to these formative categories of history."
