"Resisting the invidious political juxtaposition of Asian American 'success' against African American 'failure,' comparative race scholars have sought to reformulate this regulatory dialectic. They have revised Du Bois's earlier inquiry ['How does it feel to be a problem?'], asking Asian Americans, in the words of Vijay Prashad, 'How does it feel to be a solution?' The question of how it feels to be a solution underscores the ways in which Asian Americans are politically exploited as 'middle men minorities' in order to discipline other people of color while still suffering themselves from various forms of social exclusion and advancement. At the same time, the question also emphasizes the fact that race relations in the United States are triangulated, although they largely continue to be seen in binary terms of black and white. Like the Asian transnational adoptee who is more easily assimilated into the imaginary of of the white nuclear family than the domestic black adoptee, the figure of the meritorious, compliant, and upwardly mobile model minority serves here as a political wedge between black and white. It serves as both an alibi for and buffer between white privilege and black disenfranchisement, reinforcing in the process historical legacies of whiteness as property." (115)
