Particularly stumped, Kakashi has to lower his book in consideration of the other’s information request. He’s a shinobi, not a tour guide. This guy must just be another one of those who travel to Konohagakure to gawk at the ninja.

“Oi oi, what’s with that look now,” Kakashi mutters blandly as he looks from the similarly silver-toned man and to the rooftops. Being a shinobi, he’s used to leaping from rooftop to rooftop rather than making his way on a slower pace by foot. Slowly yet with a certain sureness, he arcs his arm and points to a section of orange and green roofs. “On the other side of those buildings and a street down. Should be the place you’re looking for.”

He would be more civil, but frankly he’d much rather be reading than leading around some beady-eyed tourist.

The former enemy turned anti-hero only inspires wariness from the Hokage. With a light sigh as his eyes fixate on the snake-like man he wishes he could be as idealistic as Naruto. But now is not the time for idealism and holding hands, now is the time to clean up the mess left in the wake of war. A mess this snake of a man across from him played a malignant role in.

Kakashi’s students still impact him with lasting impressions; smiles and promises of a better world if only to show mercy to one another. And this was the new leader of the village’s decision: Let him go. Let him go return to a place where things were once good for him,

And yet, hesitation. A chip in his voice as he addresses the other.

“I have been nothing but lenient with you and turned my back with the expectation I wouldn’t find a knife in it. If you’re having whims on returning to Orochimaru to incite more mayhem...” He doesn’t finish, instead allowing his words to trail off. There isn’t hostility in his tone, but there is a sharp edge of distrust, showing through with jagged consonant and harsh emphasis.

The stoic man’s patience wears t h i n as he keeps his nose buried in his book, attempting to block out the other’s presence. He ends his feign to ignorance and finally looks up from the orange book, “Can I help you? Do you need something?”

There had better be a good reason to disturb his reading sessions.

Looking back from the binoculars used to oversee the village from their secretive towers, Kakashi remembers how jarring it had been to learn that the village was constantly overseen by ninja in the shadows. And yet the young boy, barely a teenager, right by his side seemed to remain completely unbothered by the intense reality of their work.

“I imagined you’d have had a far more difficult time adjusting to ANBU...considering your age and...all.” He purposely forgoes mentioning Itachi’s heritage.
