We rly need to bring back the term “acquaintance” like into regular and frequent use. So many high drama community squabbles and feelings of betrayal could be avoided if people just admitted there’s a step between “stranger” and a full on friend whose friendship you have a commitment to continuing and fostering. Like sometimes you’re just aquatinted with someone and you might decide you don’t like them after getting to know them a bit better…that’s very normal
Finnish has this covered:
tuntematon: stranger
tuttu: acquaintance, someone you know of
hyvänpäiväntuttu: “good-day acquaintance”, someone you greet when you pass them in the street
kaveri: mate, someone you spend time with but don’t necessarily share personal stuff with
ystävä: friend
Don’t forget
Puolituttu: Someone you know from somewhere, like school or work or through a mutual friend but don’t spend time with and only talk with them when you have to. Notice, they’re not the same as hyvänpäiväntuttu. You WANT to greet hyvänpäiväntuttu, you don’t want to greet puolituttu. In fact, you avoid puolituttu.
