ACCORDING TO...Angelo Moore
I'm surprised a lot of shit didn't become a hit. But, you know, when I think about the music business and I think about white privilege in America, I feel like it probably has something to do with it. I'm not stuck on it like I was, but it definitely is a factor. We were an all-black band playing rock & roll and controversial music right along with R&B and pop, but America is a segregated culture and country, unfortunately. And so it has an effect on the music, too.

RARE SHIT: Â Mack Sigis Porter
Sometimes, in the process of getting our fingers dusty, we come across an artist whose vision, creative genius and wholesale originality just plain clubs us upside the collective head like a baby seal. Such is the case with the recordings created by a transplanted West African arranger, composer, and singer/songwriter known by the name of Mack Sigis Porter.
Born to a noble family in Accra, Ghana in 1945 (he is the first grandson of the former queen Affipong II), Porter began his musical training from a young age, before joining his father, a freshly minted career diplomat for the nation shortly after its gaining of independence in 1959, in his travels throughout Europe.
Based first in the Netherlands before settling in Italy, he undoubtedly was influenced by the major musical and cultural upheavals taking place throughout the mid to late 1960âs, against the backdrop of militant student protests, anti-colonial revolutions, the shifting and subversion of stagnant bourgeois status quo norms, and the musical landscape getting heavier and increasingly prone to fits of distortion, experimentation and all around eclecticism.

RARE SHIT:  SPACE GUITAR by Johnny âGuitarâ Watson
While the late, great legendary soul/R&B/funk/blues guitarist and singer/songwriter Johnny âGuitarâ Watson (February 3, 1935-May 17, 1996) is best known in North America for some of his later hits such as âSuperman Loverâ, âA Real Mother For Yaâ, âI Need Itâ and the classic working poor peopleâs anthem âAinât That A Bitchâ, the truth is that much earlier on his career, Watson singlehandedly set the tone for many much heavier genres of music which would take on full form much later on.
Although Link Wray is rightly credited as being the godfather of the power chord, and while Jackie Brenstonâs 1954 hit, the Ike Turner-penned âRocket 88â is acknowledged by most in the know as being the very first song to feature a distorted guitar ever to be played on the radio, the truth is that same year, Watson dropped a smouldering hot slab of deep fried instrumental rhythm and blues by the name of âSpace Guitarâ which changed up the whole game forever.
NEW BLOOD: Â Steffanie Christiâan
I love this track by Detroit rocker Steffanie Christiâan. Â Itâs equal parts rock and funk in attitude and vibe. Â Sheâs been described as a mix of Tina Turner, Alanis Morrisette and Rage Against The Machine, and I would say that the track Hit (featured in this blog post) best represents that mix.
Steffanie has been a mainstay in Jessica Care Mooreâs annual production, âBlack Women Rockâ (not to be confused with âBlack Girls Rockâ), a show tributing Betty Davis.  As quoted from her bio, âSteffanie Christiâan gives you more in-your-face, Detroit rock and roll than you can handle. Sheâll leave you spent, exhausted, and mesmerized, motionless on the floor, begging for one more hit.â I recently saw that she announced heading to New York with Black Women Rock, and heading to France with the Black Rock Coalition. Currently, Steffanie has an EP on iTunes called Way Too Much, that showcases her vocals beautifully, but Iâd say she shines live.  In any case, Iâm looking forward to hearing/seeing more of this dynamic and passionate performer.  Until then, take in âHit,â turn it up and let your body move. Â
Tomorrow night we wrap up our first #HowlGrowlMoanpresents residency at @thedakotatavern with @stateofsate. We're excited to welcome @theskyheroes as a guest performers and @brankooo as the guest dj. Get greasy, sweaty, nasty and rock the fuck out with us, ONE LAST TIME. 10PM/$10 #HowlGrowlMoan #blues #bluesrock #dirtyrock #rock #funk #soul
Soulive ft. The London Souls - Down By The River (Feelin Alright) (2014)
ACCORDING TO...: Â Jack White
I dabbled in things like Howlinâ Wolf, Cream and Led Zeppelin, but when I heard Son House and Robert Johnson, it blew my mind. It was something Iâd been missing my whole life. That music made me discard everything else and just get down to the soul and honesty of the blues. Â - Jack White

RARE SHIT: Â Bunker Hill
Tragically, very little is known about the late, great Baltimore, MD-based primordial soul rocker who went by the name of Bunker Hill. What IS known is that he started out as a boxer, at one point putting in time as Archie Mooreâs main sparring partner of choice, before permanently hanging up his gloves to pursue a career as a gospel singer in the late 1950âs with the Mighty Clouds of Joy.
For several years, his screaming and howling was mainly contained to the confines of the church, until one fateful day in 1962 when was approached by Vernon Ray (brother of the legendary father of the power chord himself, Link Wray, who Hill would later record and perform extensively with), and offered the opportunity to record some secular rock nâ roll music, which he eagerly accepted.
THE CRACKS: Â Kirt Godwin
Thereâs so much music in this world, that sometimes -- rather most times, a lot of good shit falls through the cracks. Â And in this case, our feature, Kirt Godwin, hasnât even put anything out or toured his solo shit. Â What youâre about to hear is a demo. Â But Iâm in love, this is my kind of shit.
So, Iâve been watching this dude for a few years now. Â I first saw him with his soul cover band, Ride The Tiger, and I instantly fell in love. Â It was the passion, his tone, and Iâm a sucker for a good guitar face. Â
Lately, heâs been posting demos that heâs been sitting on for years, starting with a brand new song that heâd written after the plane crash where the co-pilot deliberately crashed the plane.  After that, the floodgates seemed to open with almost daily postings of songs.  Today, he posted âGhost In The Kitchen.â  I think itâs my favourite of the bunch (and thereâs a lot of good shit), but this one really grabbed me.  Itâs raw, rock fuelled blues and itâll be on repeat in my collection.Â
