(later in good merit end timeline, maybe a few years?) looking back on your younger self during the trials, do you think you were naive or overly narrow in your thinking about other people and the world in general, beyond what you knew of your own experiences and your family's experiences? what have you learned since then?
- “I cannot say my judgement was flawless, but I acted how I should have - both as a man firm to his ideals and a leader - so there there is nothing wrong that I can find in that aspect. However, considering how things are now… one can say I have softened a bit.
By taking Hibiki as my right hand man, I accepted his civilian past… and, in a sense, my ignorance of the world outside of JP’s HQ. But it is a mistake to try and compare peaceful times to the apocalyptic state Japan was in during the lockdown: though some trash showed their real face, I had to keep a firm position to prevent further casualties.”
- “I am not allowed to make mistakes. Not now, and not back then.”
which of these two people would you value more: someone who is naturally "strong" but uses money and influence to get their way rather than contributing their strengths, or someone who is naturally "weak" and is born into poor circumstances but does everything they can with what strength they have?
- "What makes you think that the first option is any different from the dregs that poison our current society? My sense of "worth" is not based on how influential you can be. It is your own efforts, it is how you face adversity.
It is for this reason that I accepted civilians during the lockdown, despite their lack of formal training on how to handle and battle demons. The ones who showed promise were more than invited to stay, while we eradicated the ones who abused their "strength".
Do not insult my idea of who is worthy of merit or not. It should be clear by now which one holds actual value."

which of your demons is your favorite? you can't weasel out of this by saying something like "they're all tools" or "i don't have favorites," ok!! you have to answer!
- “That would be Cerberus, if you are forcing me to answer. But demons are, in the end, just a mean to achieve my goals. I am not allowed favoritism or to pick tools that are not efficient. It is the one that has been with me for the longest time, so there is something somewhat enjoyable about fighting alongside it.”

♕ Tower of Hope.
Hibiki’s eyes slid away from Yamato’s, taking in the strain and exhaustion on his friend’s face while he thought through his reply.
There were a lot of things going wrong in the world, but the most immediate problem right now was that the strong were preying on the weak. This wasn’t a world where people held positions of power because they were good at them, rather than because they were rich or influential, or one where people could live their lives to their fullest potential, free of corrupt systems.
The “strong” here were just stomping on anyone who couldn’t stand up to them. It was glorified playground bullying.
"Let’s change the definition of strength," Hibiki said, suddenly breaking the silence that had fallen over them.
"You never wanted just one kind of strength to matter, right? Let’s make people understand that we value every kind of personal merit, not just the power to push people down."
It had been a long time since Hibiki had spoken so many of his own thoughts about something this important. Yamato usually knew just what Hibiki meant when they talked about plans and problems, so Hibiki didn’t need to contribute a whole lot himself, but that was when Yamato already had plans and goals of his own.
Hibiki had been content to help Yamato see things differently, to affirm his ideals, to help him build the world they both wanted… but he had to do more, now.
He tried to organize his thoughts.
"People don’t trust us right now. There’s too much tension between JP’s and everyone else… If we try to change everything at once, no one will take it well. Starting small might be best.
We can’t just order everyone to act how we want them to, so let’s show them instead. Something to show both JP’s and the people what kind of world we’re trying to make. We could accept some of the injured into JP’s clinics to show that we won’t only take care of the ‘strong,’ or take some of our supply shipments and distribute them evenly among people, instead of watching people fight over them… Like I said, we can’t fix everything at once, but if the strongest people in Japan make it clear that the power to destroy isn’t what we care about, something has to change.”
"There’s a lot of other stuff to work out, like how to punish JP’s members who attack civilians, and how to do all of this practically… and even if it all goes perfectly, it’s just a start. But I think your dream is still in sight."
Yamato let his muscles relax, closing his eyes while he listened to Hibiki's words. Barely anything came out of his lips, save from a "hm" or a "mm" here and there. It sounded like a ludicrous idea, at first. Naïve, almost. One that people could easily take advantage of.
But this was not the first time Hibiki Kuze presented him with such a far-fetched idea. This happened several times during the lockdown, his position as both a member of society and a JP's member being the shining light to guide the Hotsuin when he would rather not take further risks that would endanger the country.
The Chief had extreme faith in his second-in-command, and this was not going to waver now.
- "Very well. I cannot say I fully understand this, but your judgement is sound... and at the present moment, there are many things about society that are unclear to me.
I would prefer to eradicate the scum that poison my ranks and the rest of the government, but such an abrupt movement might raise too much awareness at this point.
But, Hibiki..."
His voice was almost filled with unease. Not for himself, but for his partner. Yamato could deal with the bureaucracy and the paperwork, but he was aware Hibiki would want to do things for himself.
... He wondered if this was a really wise decision. One that offered more losses than rewards, more risk than profit. And when the risk is death, both the king and his knight should be well prepared. And Yamato did not judge them to be quite at that level.
Not yet.
- "Who is to say that these people won't bite the hand that feeds them? I do not plan on living in fear, but this might put our lives in jeopardy. If I let the rabble inside HQ, who is to say that they will not try to destroy us from inside?
I am led to believe that Polaris changed the way humankind works... but men's desire, their thirst for power remains the same. Give the weak too much power, too much privilege... and they will be quick to abuse it. You see this now, and you have seen this with the rogue Summoners during the lockdown.
There is the option to use more "visible" facilities, but those are not safe from danger. From the ones we are supposed to rescue, and from the ones oppressing them.
Doing this will be like openly declaring war. Both parties might turn against us, and there is no one I can fully count on. Are you aware of this?"
Yamato feared that this would be more than what his good companion could handle, despite what false reassurances Hibiki might throw at him.
(( I... really want to RP here. But it is so hard to make Yamato interact with other people outside his canon, or even with other people at all... I need to find a solution for this. If you are interested in writing with me, feel free to contact me and we can think of something. ))

"I gave you and your path no more scorn than the others, surely you have not forgotten my position. I have never had any true say in the results of the Trials."
Alcor may have turned his back to the idea of a world based on merit but his allegiances lay with Polaris and what the Septentrione had of a heart; its affections lay only with the idea of mankind surviving and thriving. Every route that could have been picked by that small handful of survivors, everything they could have done, Alcor took a neutral stance on.
It was not his place to truly judge the will of mankind, never was and never would be. His purpose was to test whether mans will was strong enough to face Polaris, nothing more and that role was what he accepted wholeheartedly.
"And as you have said, I have no reason to interfere and you have also stated correctly that I am merely an observer. As you and the survivors of the Trials are where this worlds new history began, you are not exempt from my observations nor Polaris’ own."
Though the two entities observed for different reasons, Polaris watched to deem whether or not humanity would face another set of Trials yet Alcor found that seeing humanity like this still pained him greatly. Perhaps he was still too attached to them despite his station or perhaps he’d never truly left his anguish behind even with his acceptance.
"As your progress as a collective falls within my interests you are not exempt from my presence though if my presence and recording ail you, I will make my visits sparse. Are such terms to your liking?"
- "And yet you insist on showing your uselessness up till the end. How very so like you, heretic. Do not think I would pity you simply because your hands are tied, for I know how many times you tried to change the natural course of things.
What you call "choice" is nothing but confusing the worthless pawns I had back then. Not that it mattered much in the end, but it is something I am well aware of your true nature."
None of this was ideal for the young leader, either. But it was what he had, and it fell to his hands to change it. To constantly change and to evolve, to discover what he could change in this pathetic imitation of the world he desired.
- "It would be best if you disappeared altogether. But I suppose asking for you to die is too much, considering you cannot do as much."
Troublesome. He could not imagine what face Hibiki would make if he saw Alcor again, alive - it had surprised the Hotsuin the same way. He thought the Septentrione was gone, and with him the faint memories of his childhood. At the time he had not time to think and mourn (he never did, finding himself not capable of such an act - not for him, anyway), and bitter regret filled his mouth once they arrived at this new world.
Emotions quickly shifted into embarrassment and humiliation. Embarrassment because this was not the world he wanted to show this man a long, long time ago. Humiliation because he knew it was inevitable Alcor would judge the current state of affairs.
And no one but Yamato Hotsuin was responsible for this decay.
- "Tell me, Saiduq."
- "Is Polaris "just"? I cannot see the world I envisioned in these fools. Is he just like you, capable of manipulating what we say to what is most beneficial to you?
This is not what I... no, what we -he makes sure to include Hibiki in this- wanted. Definitely not.
If the Administrator followed the will of men in the creation of this new reality, why did he go through such lengths to twist it so? It is something I cannot understand. Enlighten me."
and anyway your kisses were stupid
plot twist: yamato doesn't immediately lash out at alcor
Unfortunately it would be hard not to notice but this is the path that mankind desired, was it not? If this is the will of man then no matter how brutal it is, he has no room to truly object to it. Lament, but not object.
That aside, he’s always been one to watch mankind’s tumultuous history and where you and your companions will lead it he’s curious to see. Either to prosperity or perhaps— No, pay that no mind. But your history will be remembered perhaps you should ponder on what sort of legacy you wish to leave behind from this point on.
Legacy? You speak as if he has done something atrocious. You are simply an observer, and now you have no more reason to interfere. Your opinions and thoughts were never welcomed, and it is both puzzling and infuriating how you seem to keep your gaze fixed on things that are beyond your comprehension.
It is clear that the Hotsuin yearned for something else, but this world would have to do. He said before he has no qualms as being painted as a villain, as someone who is nothing like his actual self. Yamato is willing to put up with that and more for the sake of this foolish, idealistic dream. Hadn't you turned your back on me, you'd have seen it too.
There was that slight hint of annoyance in his tired features, finding the presence of this man less than ideal. Part of him felt straight out humiliated, and this was maddening. The effort to rebuild the fallen country - and keep it from falling further - was there, and there was no one that said these dark times would continue forever. Before ou speak of legacies, think about the consequences of your foolish acts and visits. Yamato's name could be darkened and he could not be bothered with it, as long as there was sliver of hope he could cling on to.

eightyursaemajoris liked your post:What do you regret about the path you've taken? Do...
And he honestly doesn't need you to notice his mistakes after it is far too late to admit that he messed this one up, thanks.
What do you regret about the path you've taken? Do you have an idea how to change what you don't like or would you rather things worked themselves out on their own? Alternatively what do you see as beneficial in your path or have you found any new benefits to it?
There were way more things in this decrepit world that the Hotsuin would like to acknowledge. Everything was wrong and out of place and things were not supposed to end that way. He thought about this - time and time again, what exactly was that he miscalculated.
His words to the Administrator? Maybe something more basic than this? It was more than a misunderstanding, and certainly Yamato Hotsuin did not desire a world of oppression. His dreams composed of a world where people would work for their position, where they would strive for success no matter where they found themselves in society. Equal chances to those who desire to achieve greatness, and not bound by the disgusting ties of the old society. A world that was now gone.
A world that was so similar to this one, a world where JP's ruled supreme. He seemed to some (or at least he'd heard) more like a tyrant than a proper ruler. It was just fine, he thought. Let them see things that way, as long as he could keep control of this situation as much as he could.
Every day this kept on escalating, and riots were common now. Casualties were heard from both sides, and this made the trust some of his men put in him quite shaky.
- "Hah... Things I would change? You jest, surely. I was clear enough that I desire a world of the strong, where the weak and the cancerous beings of our old world were simply fated to stop existing because of their inability to adapt.
What you achieve speaks louder than the position you could have previously bought with filthy money. Regretting now is mocking the sacrifices that were made during those seven days, and it is not my intent to ridicule them.
I am not allowed - nor do I have any reason to - regret my actions. The world now, as it is, is the result of my effort throughout these years." Lies.
But he could not afford to regret anything, as he said.
- "The people who died were necessary for me to stand where I am now. Necessary for the people who inhabits this new Japan.
I will repeat myself: there is nothing wrong with my decision, and this is the new world order. Adaptability was always key to human beings, more now than ever.
No room for regret exists. Everything will fall back into place with time, no matter how chaotic it seems to be now."
Lies.
