Tooru fumbled with his phone, chocolate brown hues narrowed at the screen as he flipped through his incoming messages. Today was a bit of a slow day. Not as many texts were flooding in, although his group chats were still fairly active. He’d gotten into an argument earlier with a blond male, whom he learned was named Ryuji —
(Although he would forever call him Mister Rebellious, or something akin to that nature. The guy had a certain vibe that Tooru found entertaining enough to tease.)
— anyways, the argument was (to be completely honest) childish and petty, but those were two traits that made up the majority of his own disgusting personality. Tooru felt a self-deprecating smile creep onto his face at the thought, but it was gone in half a second as he pushed his feelings of loathing towards himself out of sight. There wasn’t time for that now!
In all honesty, Tooru hadn’t even seen High School Musical before. He’d watched some of the songs online, but the whole experience seemed very unrealistic for high school. Especially considering he spent his training endlessly for a national championship that he wouldn’t even make it to!
(Oh joy, there’s that feeling again. Swallow it down, Tooru. Now’s not the time.)
Leaning forward on the park bench where he’d taken a break from his afternoon run, Tooru created a new group chat for the two individuals he’d been texting with. One was that rebellious blond, the other being a first year named Rin he’d been chatting with for a while. Clearly the two knew each other as well, so this wouldn’t be that awkward. Or maybe it would be. It wasn’t like he really cared that much, in the quest of proving he was right.
Tooru tapped out a message to both of them before sliding his phone back into his pocket, a perfectly sculpted smile decorating his face at a passerby who made eye contact with him. Tooru then stretched before beginning his run again, assured in the fact that his plans for the evening were now cemented.

Having spent his afternoon in the arcades atop the East Blackwood Centre working out... frustrations, Ryuji was undoubtedly in an active mood. After shouting at and threatening the moles in the Whack-a-Mole game for being ‘crafty bastards’, he collapsed onto a cushion strip against one of the walls.
Feeling his phone vibrate, he fishes around in his deep hoodie pockets in a lazy attempt to locate it. It was probably Akira, no doubt asking Ryuji could pick up som–
Oh.
It was him.
Oikawa Tooru. Some pretty boy jerk who may have been the cause of his aforementioned frustration. A mouthy prick-ass who tried to flex some knowledge on Mr Sakamoto. Knowledge that he didn’t effin’ have…
…And not to mention the nicknames Ryuji has to suffer.
With an agitated groan, he goes about reading the message.
…….
“…Wait, what?!”
One might think that his reaction would be to the subject of the text. In actuality, Ryuji had seen all of the High School Musicals. …Maybe more than once. But that hidden truth threatens the ‘cool guy’ vibes he aims for, and as such, he endeavours to keep that particular side of his likes under wraps.
Of course, none of this mattered in their argument. The desire to win a verbal battle and be the awe-inspiring victor overwhelmed the quiet burn of embarrassment. But there was no doubt if they were to sit down and watch it, Ryuji would hum along to the songs, and get really… heated towards particular characters and plot developments. And that would be a one way ticket off his throne of ‘cool’.
…But this wasn’t what Ryuji was so up in arms about.
“That bastard…! How the crap…?!”

thumbs tapped away on her phone’s screen as rin’s eyes were laser-focused on the rhythm game she’d been playing a lot recently. catchy and colorful, plus it had its own small gacha aspect - rin had practically been playing it constantly for a few days at this point.
she laid on her stomach, knees bent with feet swaying in the air to the music playing on the main menu as she scrolled side to side through the song selection, trying to decide which one she’d perfect next to continue her habit. despite her only playing it for a few days, quite a few songs found themselves fully combo'd with high scores already. why not get some more practice in on one of the harder ones that had been plaguing her leaderboard-worthy scores?
the phone was dropped onto her pillow for a few moments as rin cracked her knuckles and got a bit of stretching in; she didn’t want her hands to cramp up in the middle of a lucky run, now, did she? with a big inhale, the idol picked her phone back up and propped her upper body up on her elbows, selecting the song and fidgeting a bit, a sorry excuse for last-minute stretching.
she chewed away at her lower lip as she focused on the notes starting to slide in, tapping them when they’d reach the line. the beginning of this song was always easy: her thumbs weren’t worn out quite yet, the notes didn’t seem to have a mind of their own unlike other parts of the song, and she had been through the beginning plenty of enough times. when she got to the halfway point without missing a single note, that was rin realized this could potentially be the one - that one lucky run she needed. her score was looking good, the drawn girls she’d gathered through the gacha system were cheering her on, this was it! there was only a bit left, but it was the hardest part for sure; notes all over the screen, making most people resort to using their fingers on both hands as if they were playing a piano instead of a simple mobile game.
even without that trick, she was doing great. her thumbs weren’t cramping just yet and she had a feeling she might just make it through this --
and then a text message scrolled down from the top of her screen, blocking where she needed to tap to hit a note. and thus, her full combo was ruined. she let out a frustrated sigh, her feet, head, and hands all slamming down onto the bed in exasperation. rin hadn’t even seen who the message was from, but lord help them, if it wasn’t something good...
...these two.
