Post-canon fix-it, Canon Divergence, POV alternating; References to philosophy, literature, poetry, and biblical scripture
Summary:
Everything Castiel is, everything he’s made of, is hitched to a thin golden string attached to Dean Winchester’s soul, tugging him closer, begging him to let them collide.
He recalls Aristophanes’ story of creation; the one in which humans were split in two as a divine punishment, forever in search of their other half.
Cas is not human, but he understands the sentiment.
In which Dean is finally in a world without impending catastrophe, but it's also a world without Cas. He spends all day fighting not to think about it, and at night, his sleep is haunted by grief.
But then his dreams start to feel more and more real, and no grave can hold Cas down.

chat i'm about halfway through writing the new chapter for cathedral of cards (and she's juicy 😏). she's coming along slowly but surely, TRUST i will not abandon yall lest the ao3 curse strike me down 🙌
excerpt from the newest chapter of my season 4-5 destiel fic!
______
He sucks in a deep breath, his chest expanding against his fist. Being aware of your body is a suffocating feeling. It feels like his ribcage is a prison, its forbidding claws trapping rather than protecting the delicate organs inside of it.
It’s this thought that reminds him of the script etched into the enamel of his ribs. The memory of a foreign, internal ache, a kind of sting he’s never experienced in a life full of every type of pain imaginable, knocks the breath out of him, just like it did the first time. Heaven might think his body is theirs for the taking, might have even designed it to their liking, but this one small thing is something they never accounted for. This wasn’t a part of their divine plan.
The carvings in his bone are there because Dean, against all odds, convinced an angel to help him do what’s right. Not Sam, not Bobby, not his dad, just him, and him alone.
Well, not entirely alone.
It occurs to Dean that for maybe the first time in his life, he has an ally—a friend—who’s actually, actively on his side, come Hell or high water (and it really might). Sure, he’s had friends before, has some now—Lee, Ash, Pamela, Jo and Ellen, Cassie, kind of, if you want to boil what they had down to friendship—but it’s always been conditional. He could never ask for too much, or reveal too much, or it was over. Or they were dead.
Cas clutched his soul in his hands, and turned his back on Heaven because Dean told him it was the right thing to do, and he’s still around. There’s nothing Dean could do or say that could be more than any of that. It feels like there’s nothing he could do to ruin it. He even got Cas killed, like he got his dad and Ash and Pamela killed, and he came back. He came back to Dean, saved his life, and painted protective warding onto his skeleton.
It’s the second marking Cas has given him, Dean realizes. The handprint on his shoulder, which used to be a reminder of Heaven’s claim on him, has taken on a new meaning. When it was red-hot, Castiel was an ice-cold marble statue that pulled Dean out of Hell at Heaven’s command, and now that it’s pale pink, Cas is a brother-in-arms, someone who came through for Dean when he needed it most. When his actual brother had let him down worse than he ever thought possible.
He opens his hand again, splaying it wide, smoothing it over the front of his shirt. His body is imperfect, inside and out, scarred and tattooed with symbols of his rebellion, his decisions, his life.

spn s13e6 is like when you say a dog's favorite words except the dog is dean. like "cas! cowboys! case! dodge city! gunfight! western! cas in a cowboy hat! cas quoting tombstone!"
ok so i think i'm going to write a season 4-5 destiel fic next--kinda dark, eldritch horror cas, apocalypse is nigh, 3 am in a motel parking lot with a flickering neon sign vibes. i know dean isn't a canon smoker but i feel like it would kinda fit his character, especially if it were something he did when he was younger, then quit, but picked back up as a stress relief thing after hell. but what do yall think??
Long ahhhh Destiel rant (regarding the treatment of queer fans)
This shi is wayyyy longer than I originally meant so if you want to skip my rambling scroll down to the pictures attached to see my actual point lol
Okay so regarding recent events, this whole ordeal has kind of emphasised something that's been irking me for a while now. I've shipped destiel for nearly a decade, and i'm gay, and I am pretty used to the weird way the show has handled queerness in general. I grew up in a very religious environment, and latched on to supernatural as a teen, using it as an escape from the world around me that constantly told me i was going to hell (how ironic) for something i couldn't control. I think that's why the show appealed to me so much, because it portrayed biblical stuff in a lighthearted way, encouraged you to question things and find your own free will. I never at any point expected destiel to be made canon in any way whatsoever, that it wasn't what the show was about, it was something for me to write and read about in secret and never ever talk about.
I lost interest for the show for a while after the hostility towards destiel fans started, it was hard to stay involved when it felt like the show hated me for shit i didn't do- sure, there are always gonna be crazy fans in any community, but it felt like everyone was being lumped together with the people who would send death threats and harass the actors at conventions. It was a pretty clear sign that I wasn't welcome in this space anymore.
So imagine my surprise when years later I decided to tune in to the last season out of morbid curiosity, only for November 5th to occur. Sure, it was comical, a character comes out and is immediately sent to super ultra hell, basically the thing i'd been scared would happen to me for most of my life, and sure the ambiguity of it and Deans lack of any kind of reply made it obvious that they wanted to make sure it could still be seen as an 'i love you, bro' sort of thing by any of the fans that would spontaniously combust if it was an explicitly gay thing.
(I mean, they literally spend most of the show trying to kill the Christian god, but heaven forbid they make one of the main characters gay)
The point is, as diabolical as it was, it was still far more than I ever expected. In fact, it blew my mind. After all of the religious trauma that had me balls deep in the closet for years, it was such a simple but reassuring concept- What if an angel was gay?
But then over the years, it feels like it's always been up in the air whether it was canon or not. I always tended not to really take anything the actors said to heart, as they were obviously entitled to their own opinions, but the way it was treated always felt kind of off to me.
Particularly when people dare to breathe the word 'destiel' at cons are still booed and mocked, and told to keep that shit to themselves. Now obviously I'm not defending people who are being freaks and making others uncomfortable, but it's like people who even acknowledge it or ask respectful questions about it are still shamed publicly because that's not actually part of the show- but the thing is, it IS part of the show now. They literally wrote it in. Even if it was one-sided, its still an actual plot point IN THE SHOW. So why are we shaming people for asking questions about the show????
My main issue comes from the fact that the show continues to this day to pat itself on the back for being so brave for what they did, yet at the same time, it constantly backpedals on itself. They parade around their queer confession, happily accepting the brownie points it scores them, but also ostracising their queer audience.
These are real videos uploaded to the official supernatural youtube channel. THEY ARE TAKING PART IN PRIDE MONTH. Oh, wow how wonderful, aren't they so accepting and brave?
I know it sounds silly, but as a gay person, it feels like a slap in the face.
I wouldn't care at all if it was canon, but the show/actors seem hell-bent on telling us it ISNT. Which is FINE, i don't care if it isn't either, but they need to pick a fucking side, it's either canon or it's not. Cas is queer, or he isn't. His relationship with Dean is romantic, or it's familial. Right now, it's like they're ping-ponging back and forth and still reaping all the rewards of having this awesome gay representation that they can show off like a badge of honour.
I'm not trying to start further discourse or anything by posting this. I'm aware that at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter, and I will happily continue to ship Destiel quietly in my own little corner of the internet. I just needed to word vomit this out of my brain because at the centre of it all, I'm not angry, I'm just disheartened.
Anyways, that's the end of my rant lol go forth and be kind, I'm a multishipper so pls i'm not trying to start shipping wars or anything.

[Image ID: The Destiel confession meme edited so that Dean answers 'I accept you coming out to me like a father would and I will definitely not sob about it. Also I think you should be really grateful I didn't physically shove you away because ewwww, gay.' to Cas 'I love you'. /End ID]
(rant about the purcon destiel statements, among other things)
i'm so sick of this narrative that queer people's love doesn't need to be reciprocated, just accepted, and that's some "beautiful thing" that we, as the audience, should be grateful for. these actors and show runners keep pushing the message that gay people should be happy that the people in their lives don't outright reject them, and that the audience is greedy and unreasonable for being upset that queer characters' feelings aren't reciprocated. to me, it feels like telling your queer audience that they should be happy about and grateful for acceptance of their identity, not that it should be expected of the people in their lives, and that hoping for reciprocation is unreasonable--because your love is queer. and, on top of that, sometimes you not only get no reciprocation, but you might also DIE after confessing your feelings, and you should be happy with that "beautiful" moment because the guy you confessed to didn't spit in your face and call you a slur.
i never actually expected destiel to go canon, because that's giving the show runners far too much credit. however, to tell the disappointed fans who did hope to see that love story play out that they should've been happy with the representation they got (which, let's be clear, was a SINGLE SCENE, which was vague enough that people STILL argue to this day it wasn't actually queer, and that ended in the queer character's DEATH) is ridiculous and so out of touch. queer people do not need to be happy about subpar representation.
also, it is outright homophobic to compare (tw) winc3st to destiel, period. in no way are they remotely similar (other than being same-sex pairings), and saying that a gay fanon ship is "the same" as a ROMANCE between BROTHERS is disgustingly ignorant and genuinely offensive.
anyway. i don't really like to engage in fandom discourse much because it's exhausting, but. felt pissed off, might delete later, idk
