I originally posted this on AfterLife, a subculture-based indie social media site - I've attached the original post here in case you want to check out the site for yourself :)
Greetings freaks,
I am, perhaps shockingly, a Valentine's Day enjoyer - I know we're still technically within the traditional Abrahamic holiday season, but my sights are set on Valentine's Day for whatever reason now… which means I'm brewing up some DIY crafts and activities to make my participation a lot more sustainable and alternative >:3 And I thought I'd share some of those ideas with you!
Make your own cutesy blanket/quilt
* Go to the thrift store (or wherever you might source old textiles - antique stores, garage/yard/tag sales, FB marketplace, your own closet, etc.) and gather pieces with fabrics you like
* Cut up the garments/items and arrange them in a design or pattern of your choosing
* Sew the scraps together and add a backing of some kind (fleece, felt, satin, you name it) or quilt it all together to make your own special blankie! You could sew by hand or with a machine depending on how DIY you want the end product to look
* You could also add paint splatters, words, quotes, or other design elements by hand!
* You could totally do the same thing to make a one-of-a-kind teddy bear or pillow if you're that skilled!
Papercraft some valentines
* Collect old magazines, newspapers, ads, posters, books, cards, and other paper materials that have images or elements you like, or search the Internet Archive for similar things and print them out yourself
* Find stationery - this could be a dusty Mead notebook from the 80s you found in your auntie's closet and a Bic pen, or a unique set of paper goods you cherish and your favorite markers - as well as basic crafting supplies like a glue stick/hot glue gun, scotch tape/double-sided tape, glitter, stickers, etc.
* Call upon your inner child and make some valentines! Use your adult fine motor skills to bring your artistic vision to life! Make a mess, make a masterpiece, have fun with it!
* You could do this with textiles (felt, fleece, linen, lace, leather, satin, velvet, whatever) instead if you're not a fan of papercrafts!
* You could add some fake blood, needles, skulls, bats, black widows, or spiderwebs to make it more spooky!
* These valentines don't necessarily need recipients as they can simply exist for your enjoyment and pleasure, but you could totally make them as actual gifts
* In a similar vein, you could make a little trinket box with these materials as well
Compile your own love-poetry chapbook
* I'd personally love to use a typewriter for this, but you could also do this in a normal word processor and use a special font if that's more accessible/preferable for you - or hand-write it, who gives a shit
* Write some love poems! To yourself, your s/o or partner(s), your platonic soulmate, your loved ones far away, your blorbos from your shows, it's all up to you
* Once you've got 14 of them, print them out (or just collect them all if you've already got them on paper), hole-punch 'em, and stick 'em in a binder to create your own lil chapbook all about love!
* You can decorate the binder to be spooky-cute and make that its own craft, too
* You could also hand-bind an actual book for yourself if you're a hardcore nerd like that /affectionate
* (The number of poems you write is entirely up to you, I just think 14 is attainable and cute because Valentine's Day is the 14th of February)
Role-play as your favorite historical yearner by writing love letters
* Bust out a quill, dip/fountain pen, or dollar store festive-themed pen (or your laptop or notes app if that's what's accessible to you) and some paper - something nice is best for this craft, but it doesn't have to be formal stationery as you could decorate some plain notebook/printer paper yourself
* Write some love letters - to your past, present, and future selves; to your s/o or partner(s); to a loved one who has died; to your crush who doesn't know you're crushing on them (or maybe they do, who knows); to someone who really needs to know just how loved they are, etc. Write a letter for whoever you have some really strong feelings for
* Really take the time to think about what you want to say to these people. Regardless of whether you end up sending/giving them or not, write as if the intended recipient will be reading it
* Decorate!!!
* You could actually send these if you have penpals or loved ones far away, or deliver them by hand if your recipient is close by, but you don't have to - these can simply be another outlet for your love and creativity without prying eyes
Decorate some spooky-cute cookies
* If you're able to bake cookies wherever you are, I HIGHLY suggest making your cookies and icing from scratch! If not, store-bought is fine
* Literally just make whatever you want. Those little fishnet-clad heart-shaped asses, anatomical hearts, conversation heart candies, doves, bats, roses, pomegranates, something from your own culture that represents love to you, etc.
* This could be a solo activity, or you could invite people over and make this a couples/friend group thing!
Grow some wire/paper roses
* Once again, you can use nice crafting supplies or random junk lying around for this project
* If you go the wire route, be careful not to get wire that's too stiff or you might hurt yourself! We don't want real blood on these things!!
* There are a million tutorials for making wire/paper roses, but basically just have fun with it and decorate them when you're done
* Add thorns to the stems, paint on some mold, clip on some red beads to look like droplets of blood, draw on some spiderwebs (or collect real ones), splatter them with paint or ink, spray-paint them black/red/pink, the choice is yours
Sincerely,
~ Lady Catashtrophe
