In honor of Jason's birthday đ§˘
"Tell him yourself. I'm coming to get you."
Midnight Blue XXXI: Reinvention
Available to read on AO3 here!
Author's Note: This fic does NOT exist without 'Twisted Love' by @oblivious-troll. I'd never thought about Jason as a psychopath until I'd read that fic. And if I've said it once I've said it a thousand times. Jason from that fic lives in my head rent free - exploring that side of Jason is just so interesting to me.
So although this fic is no where near the same subject matter (please heed the tags for that fic!), I wanted to explore Jason being a little psycho myself. Definitely in a completely different font - but I wouldn't have done it without that fic.
I love this AU so much so if you want to talk about it or have any questions I would LOVE to answer them! đ¤Š
Disclaimer: As above I wouldn't have even thought of this without the aforementioned fic! This is an AU where Salim is an Entity (Bad Omen)
Warnings: Death is a big part of this fic due to Salim's nature as an entity / Natural Disasters / Jason goes psychotic / Suicidal Thoughts / suicide / fire imagery / Death & death mentions /Smoking / Drinking / Swearing / reckless work in dangerous conditions / some sexual suggestion / hurt with very little comfort / mythical shenanigans
Premise: When a tall, dark, handsome stranger rolls into their small town, Jason falls for him instantly. He makes Salim his everything. When Salim disappears without a trace, Jason is unable to keep his cool. Desperate times call for drastic measuresâŚ

--- You were always too good for me And it just took you this long to see
---
I wanna stay but gotta go This place is going up in smoke Don't matter if you're here, or you're gone
Everything that we were's Everywhere that I turn You took Heaven on Earth Left it ashes and dirt
---
I would start it when where we started at the downtown party Where you kissed my lips and stole my beer I'd get some gas and drop a match right there
Fire-red flames, sunsets in the sky Going out, staying in, staying up, long nights Now I'm waking up alone, wishing I could move on Blocked your number in my phone, thought it'd help, but it don't
I'd burn this whole town down Pick a spot, dig a hole, put them ashes in the ground Damn, why'd you have to break it like that? Leaving pieces of my shattered heart scattered like glass ---
The clock ticks over another minute. He should be long gone by now. He made his decision. As if it was ever really a choice. Instead, Salim is staring at the ceiling of their bedroom. Heâs already outstayed his welcome â any longer and far worse things will start happening to the poor people of this town.
The only thing anchoring him here is the man sleeping next to him. Salim dares a glance over. Every minute he wastes is one closer to Jason waking up. Heâs a deep sleeper; Salim isnât surprised â Jason is always firing on all cylinders and total energy. He needs to recover all of that overnight and be ready to work in the morning. Jason works hard and plays harder. At least, thatâs what he was always saying, with a little smirk on his face.
This is also one of the rare occasions where Jason is not wrapped around Salimâs body. All he has to do is slip from the bed, pack his things, and go.
Salim knows exactly what he is and what he signifies. When he rolls into town, he is a warning. An inevitability, a bad omen. Back in the day it was easy for people to heed such things; in the modern era the warning is long forgotten. Salimâs presence means nothing to them but a new face in town.
Staying is not an option. Everything he is meant to indicate is already happening. He should never have let himself get caught up in this. Certainly not in love⌠He is forced from bed by the way Jason subconsciously reaches out for him. Standing, compelled into action. From the corner of his eye he can see another minute tick over but he has to make sure Jason stays asleep. The American settles, and Salim sets to workâŚ
***
They met in a bar â itâs the only one in town. It was a Friday night and Jason and his co-workers â friends â are just there to kick back and unwind after a long week. The town is built around its heavy industry â meaning itâs small, thereâs about one of everything, and almost every man here works at the foundry.
Everyone knows everyone, which makes newcomers rare. Salim has been in town for a few days. Heâs settled with a place to stay and a job, but this is his first day venturing to the locals. With the way they are yelling and blowing off steam, itâs impossible not to notice Jason and his friends at their table in the back of the bar when heâs standing at it. Salim is sipping his drink, observing everyone, but his eyes keep wandering back to their obvious leader.
He sits relaxed, leaning back on his chair, confident grin on his face as he listens to them all talk. His brown eyes have a light in them that almost glows. They match the colour of his hair. He looks like trouble. Tattoos and a baseball cap that Salim thinks displays a sports team, but heâs not too sure. But when he speaks they all turn and listen to him.
Eventually he must know Salimâs eyes are lingering on him a little too long, because as he goes to take a sip of his beer his eyes wander to the bar. And they lock. Salimâs breath catches for a moment, the man tips his head in curiosity, bottle pressed to his lips. Salim watches the way those brown eyes leave his own, tracing their way down his body. The manâs teeth sink into the corner of his bottom lip in interest as his eyes sweep back up Salim to his face. He smirks when he meets Salimâs eyes again. Tipping his beer back to take a sip.
Salim continues to hold his gaze, giving a small smile of his own, before raising his own drink in greeting. The manâs eyes grow a little wide and he turns away, teeth sinking a little further into his lip. He blows out a breath, before smiling to himself, and taking another sip. Salim is disappointed that he doesnât turn back, instead he leans forward on the table bringing their attention all back to him.
Jason leans on the table, one hand up to the side of his face closest to the bar â he canât be too careful: âAnyone know who the new guy at the bar is? Donât be fuckinâ weird and all turn at once please.â Nick moves to peek through Joey and Merwinâs shoulders. âNever seen him.â Jason looks to Eric, whose sideways glance is also subtle, âNo oneâs joining the team, we havenât hired anyone. And Rach hasnât mentioned anyone joining her⌠Maybe heâs just staying for the weekend.â Rachel, his wife, is the single point of law & authority they have here. Jason snorts, âCâmon Eric! Who the fuck stays here for the weekend?!â âSomeone who knows fuck all about the town thatâs for sure!â Merwin laughs, before turning around. The man in question is stand out, but heâs gone back to watching the rest of the bar. Jason is glad, because otherwise Merwin has just made it obvious. âOoooh. Heâs just your type, Jason!â âShut up.â Jason narrows his eyes at Merwin over his beer, but the man is correct. This tease makes Joey turn around, âOh yeah! Would you look at that!â âDonât you fuckinâ start.â Joey turns back to him, âNot seen him either though man, sorry.â
Realising his friends are going to be no help, Jason goes right back to staring. He notices that as soon as he does so, thatâs when the manâs eyes are drawn back to look at him.
Itâs unusual to see someone this good looking here. Man looks like heâs stepped out of a magazine photoshoot. But thereâs something almost ethereal about him too. But heâs only staring at Jason. This time he returns Jasonâs up and down sweep â with a flirty smile.
Definitely interested. This never happens to Jason.
Jason looks away again, taking another sip of his beer, only to find out the bottle is already finished.
Well, isnât that a perfect excuse. Jason stands up, unceremoniously, and all his friends look at him.
âIâm going to see Clarice. Need another round.â Nick rolls his eyes, âOh god, here we goâŚâ Merwin smirks at him, âHeâll never go for it, Jason, SIT down!â Jason narrows his eyes again, âFuck you, I got this!â
He strolls to an empty space at the bar with his finished bottle and sits it up on the counter. Clarice, the bar tender, knows everything. She steps up to him, âJason? What can I do you for?â Jason nods back, ââŚSo, who is the new guy? Clarice raises an eyebrow, âNew guy?â She glances in the direction he tips his head in, before her tone becomes exasperated, âOh god, Jason⌠donât do this.â He's not perturbed, âWho is he?â She sighs, âActually Iâve never seen him before, must be new in town.â He leans in across the bar, in disbelief: âYou donât know? You know everything, what use are you when I need you most!â Clarice shakes her head at him, âCanât you just let him settle in first?â âAnd let anyone else walk up? Hell no. Whatâs he drinking?â Now she smirks, âZero percent.â Jason pauses, eyes flicking to the empty heâs just placed on the bar. Definitely not zero percent. âWell, it canât be all bad. Gimmie one.â She rolls her eyes and Jason is surprised that she doesnât put her head in her hands: âJasonâŚâ âHey, Iâm payinâ arenât I?â She points at him across the bar, âDo not fuck this up. I quite like having new patrons spend money here.â He tilts his head before smirking, âDarlinâ, Iâm not fucking anythingâŚâ Clarice puts the bottle on the bar, staring at him hard before folding her arms. ââŚI donât even wanna know.â Jason smiles, âWish me luck.â She snorts, pushing his arm across the bar, âYou wish!â He winks at her, takes the bottle, and walks over to the new guy.
Whoever he is, his eyes follow Jason around the bar and over to him. He mimics Jasonâs little head tip, as Jason settles in next to him. Jason wastes no time getting to the point, settling against the bar he curves his body. Jason knows what his assets are and heâs going to use all of them. This is the only chance heâs going to get to make a good first impression. âNot seen you around here beforeâŚâ The stranger tilts his head the other way so he leans in towards Jason. His brown eyes and dark hair really offset against his skin tone. Jason finds this stranger overwhelmingly hot. âWell, this would be my first time out in town. But I moved here a few days ago.â Jason almost completely loses it. He doesnât expect the man to have an accent. He has to take a gulp of the beer to save himself â it actually doesnât taste so bad â nodding as if this was obvious information that he knew already. âMy nameâs Jason, Iâve been here far too long.â The stranger smiles, eyeline following Jasonâs beer bottle as it hits the bar before returning to his eyes: âItâs nice to meet you Jason, Iâm Salim.â Salim. Jasonâs not going to forget in a hurry. âWelcome to town, Salim, where you from?â
Salim knows he canât simply explain where. âOh⌠you know⌠around.â Jason smiles, âWell, not from around here, not with that accent.â Salim can pick up immediately that Jason is attracted to it. He wasnât being too subtle. Salim didnât think he needed to be subtle back either. The young man was pretty - now heâs got a closer look Salim can study the freckles that run across his face and down his neckâŚÂ possibly further. Heâs got long eyelashes, and full lips, his face is a little flushed and Salim thinks itâs possibly from the drinking. Or maybe not, maybe itâs him doing that.
Pretty mischief.
Salim knows the type; heâs encountered it before.
Jason changes his position, turning so heâs leaning his back against the bar, stretching his body out this time so his shirt rides up, grazing his stomach. His jeans are already riding pretty low. âYou here to stay? Or just for a little while?â Salim leans in a little closer, flirting right back, âI guess I havenât decided yet.â Jason smiles, before biting his lip again, âWell, maybe I can change thatâŚâ Salim pretends like heâs thinking about it â he knows he canât stay here too long. But for a little while, he could have some fun here. âMaybe you could.â Jason tips his head, âWhere you workinâ?â âAh, the information centre.â Jason had always laughed that a tourist office for this town even existed, but it doubled as a library, internet and phone point for older residents who didnât have such things. Jason had never had much reason to go in there and if Dar, who ran the place, had anything to say about it, Jason probably never would.
That would explain a few things though. This man didnât look like heâd enjoy working at the foundry. Although; Jason drags his eyes down Salimâs body again. - his shoulders and chest are broad; he has the body for it. Itâs a little easier to see that under his shirt when Jason is standing this close.
âIf youâre new, I could at least show you aroundâŚ? I got a free weekend. If youâre at the information office, you gotta know what youâre talking about, right?â Another smile toys with Salimâs face, and he doesnât dare tell Jason that heâs already been taught everything he needs to know for this job. âIâll hold you to that.â He reaches over, taking the beer bottle Jason has left on the bar and taking a sip. He maintains intense eye contact with Jason as he does so.
Jason just about loses it again. Glad he has the bar to lean against. âOh fuck. I might actually just be in love.â He moves again; turning his body sideways; now heâs showing off everything.
Salim sets the bottle down between them, rolling his tongue over his lips.
Jason decides he wants to kiss them so badly.
Somehow, he restrains himself long enough to just get Salimâs number â he walks away from the bar victorious, but without his beer bottle. His friends are all jeering at him, but Jason gets the last laugh.
Jason and Salim spend all weekend together. The spark of attraction is obvious but itâs Salim that kisses him first, itâs Salim who is chasing Jason. Jason isnât used to the feeling of being chased. Isnât used to the feeling of being wanted like this.
It doesnât end at kissing; it moves to touching and before the week is out, they are in bed together. And then Salim never really leaves Jasonâs house again after that. Salim isnât meant to stick around but⌠Jasonâs got him feeling differently. Like this time bad things wonât happen. He lets himself get too comfortable. They date. They move in together. Itâs so fast but it feels SO good. Too soon to move in together? Perhaps. But this is Jasonâs house. And Salim has made it a home. The initial ignited passion never goes away, but it turns into something more romantic: they sit outside in the quiet and count stars, they watch fireworks, Salim starts to make friends with Jasonâs friends, and they always go to the bar on Friday night.
Jason makes Salim believe that this time things will be different; that this time he wonât be a herald of misfortune to come. He can finally settle in one place with one person that has made Salim happier than he has ever been; and he has lived enough lifetimes.
He had been a fool to think that. Things had started slow but snowballed quick â accidents, really. Small natural disasters would roll through town â but the town had seen a tornado before. There was damage sure, but nothing big. Small scale earthquakes, enough to make things rattle but nothing really more than that. Salim doesnât notice these things as much because Jason seems so blissfully unaware that anything is wrong. But itâs not long before the tornados get worse and violent storms and earthquakes start taking lives in the surrounding area. Jason sits watching the TV with his arms folded and comments how itâs weird there have been so many bad things like this happening recently â but he doesnât seem as bothered as he should be.
Salim on the other hand gets twisted up about it. This is exactly why he shouldnât stay. Why he canât stay. Things seem small scale now, but it isnât going to be long until they get much worse. And Salim will never forgive himself if something terrible happens to Jason.
Jason is the only thing stopping him from going at the first sign of danger. He is unable to untangle himself from this relationship. Salim has rooted himself in this town and if he uproots himself, he knows he will uproot Jason too.
And Salim holds onto that. Until about a week before Salim is doing this; packing his things as quietly as possible, he doesnât even dare flip on a light.
When Jason comes home he looks pretty haunted. Not necessarily upset but shaken. Salim doesnât need Jason to say anything, itâs present in the way he closes the door and trudges through the house. Usually heâs running into the kitchen, practically throwing himself into Salimâs arms in greeting and asking about his day.
Today he stops at the kitchen door, looking hollow.
âHabibi?â Salim immediately drops everything that heâs doing, pulling Jason close. âHey⌠itâs okay, youâre okay.â
Salim sits him down on the couch, and Jason ends up lying between his legs, head buried in his chest mumbling about work. This isnât just a small work accident. Someone has died at the foundry today. Worse, Jason and his friends witnessed it happen. Salim cards his fingers through Jasonâs hair and lets him talk. Itâs very broken and jumbled up but Salim understands what has happened. Jason is very shaken up about it. All he wants to do that night is curl up in Salimâs lap, be held and be quiet.
Thatâs when he realises he has to go. Salim canât let anything worse than this happen to Jason. This one is a little too close to home: what if the next one is in the house.
Salim would never forgive himself. As much as he wants to stay. He has to go, and this moment is as good a fuel as any.
Once heâs away from here, all these horrific things will stop.
Everything is loaded into Salimâs car by the time he enters the bedroom again. Jason is in the same position Salim left him in. One hand outstretched over Salimâs vacated space on the bed.
Theyâve had it so goodâŚÂ Maybe the best Salim has ever had it. But it just canât be this way anymore. Salim needs a clean break, hence why heâs leaving without a word under the cover of darkness. If he tries to break up with Jason via a conversation, he knows that Jason will make him stay. If heâs even able to get the words out, Jason will make him stay by his reaction.
Hell, even Salim just looking at Jason asleep makes him keep reconsidering this decision.
Salim canât afford that. He has to leave now. No trace, as if he was never there. He only wishes he could erase the memories too. But Jason could move on and forget him, and Jason would be much better for it.
He ghosts a kiss to Jasonâs skin and the man stirs slightly, whispers his name but doesnât wake.
This is so painful. But itâs the only way.
Salim dips his head again, pressing one to Jasonâs forehead too, he lingers there for just long enough. He can feel how warm Jasonâs skin is. And itâs a warmth heâd find difficult to leave. Jason always ran hot; both literally and in the way he loved, the way he fought, heâs got a temper and a mouth on him. Salim has definitely patched him up more than a couple of times after a bar fight; got between Jason and a few people with Nickâs help, too.
Jason does not love shy either. If they meet in the bar after work, he will immediately rush over from being with his friends and leap at Salim. This is not always good news if Jason is still covered in a little bit of ash from work. But Jason likes it when it rubs off on Salimâs skin or clothes. Even when it isnât a signal in public to everyone else that they are an item; Jason does it at home too. Jason is still the only one who ever looks good after a day of work. Sure, heâs covered in dirt and grime but he hardly ever seems to sweat, and compared to everyone else he still looks so alive. Barely any signs of exhaustion after doing so much manual labour, like he thrives there.
And his smile â it matches the glow in his eyes. He smiles like sunshine.
âGoodbye Jason,â Salim murmurs it as he stands in their bedroom doorway. âI love youâŚâ It is not theirs anymore, itâs just Jasonâs once again now. He commits this man one more time to his memory. Salim will surely never forget him, âIâm sorryâŚâ
As he turns to leave Salim catches something wet cascading down his face. He watches the droplets run between his fingers, and roll slowly down his arm.
Salim realises he is crying.
***
The sound of the alarm pierces the quiet room. Jason hits his nightstand at least twice before his fist hits the top of the alarm clock. He groans, burying his head in his arms. âAnother fucking workday, huh? One day these thingsâll stop.â He's met with silence, instead of laugher or a groan at another bad joke and, lifting his head, Jason realises he is alone. Thatâs not an unusual occurrence; they both work shift jobs. Sometimes Salim will get up and make breakfast for them both â and heâs definitely not due in early today. Neither is Jason, which means they probably have most of the morning together.
He takes a little bit of time to warm up in the morning, but once he feels more awake Jason climbs out of bed. Pulling his t-shirt on, he exits the bedroom and hangs over the bannisters. âBabe? Whatâs for breakfast?!â Heâs met with silence. âSalim!?â More silence. And this house isnât big; he couldnât get lost in here enough not to hear Jason.
Jason is puzzled for a moment. Had he got it wrong? Was Salim in early today? He pads down the stairs, leaning over to peek into the kitchen. There is no sign that itâs even been used this morning, the dishes are still stacked neatly in the drying rack from last night. Did Salim forget too? Had he been late for work?
Jason almost laughs to himself; wouldnât be the first time either of them have been late to work. Usually, it was the other oneâs fault. This one was not on Jason; but heâd be happy to take the blame.
As heâs got a couple of hours â disappointingly alone â Jason decides heâll go for a run, then take a shower and eat before heading off. Heâll see Salim later, after all. Â Jason returns to the bedroom to grab his phone before heading back to the kitchen. âHave a good day at work babe, were you late? ;) â He sets it on the side, pouring himself a glass of water. From the window he can see that Salimâs car is also not in the driveway. Definitely at work, then. He strolls to their shared calendar; but stops, eyebrow raised as he takes another sip of water. âSalim â Work â PM Jason â Work â PMâ So Jason wasnât wrong. Did Dar just call him in early? That wasnât surprising. Jason looks back over his shoulder at his phone; maybe it was just busy today. Salim would tell him, right?
Why does he suddenly feel uneasy? Jason wanders slowly back upstairs, stopping back by the bedroom door. Something is definitely off. While Salimâs phone and watch are gone, he also usually has a stack of books sitting on his side of the bed. Those are also gone. The picture frame that sits beside them is also face down. This isnât sitting right with Jason at all. He starts to get worried. âSalim!?â This times he yells it; just in case heâs being a blind idiot. Jason doesnât know why he hopes for a reply this time. He walks over to the table and picks the photograph up. It's a picture of them from their first year anniversary. Jason is sitting on the bridge in the town park, with Salim standing in front of him; both smiling at the camera. Jason could not be more wrapped around Salim in this photograph if heâd tried. Arms splayed across his shoulders and chest, with his legs wrapped around his waist. He places it back on the table the right way up, frowning a little.
Jason pulls his hand up against his chest: he can feel his heartrate start to rise. What was going on!? Thereâs logical explanations for this. If theyâre books from the library Salim has to return them, Dar texted him super early like it was some kind of emergency and Salim answered. Of course he did, that was the kind of man he was. He didnât want to wake Jason; he was in a rush and knocked the picture frame over. Dar, being Dar and never in the best of moods with Jason - as heâd always been seen as the bad influence - anyway, of course wouldnât let him have 2 minutes just to text back and let Jason know he was fine.
It was fine. It was going to be okay.
âŚIt didnât feel okay, though.
Jason takes a step back towards the dressers, and opens the first one. His heart suddenly has a reason to be racing.
Empty.
He tries the second one.
Empty.
âOh no⌠no no noâŚâ
He rushes to the other side of the room, wrenching open the door to the closet. Salimâs sideâŚÂ gone.
Jasonâs breaths shake, he bolts from the room and to the bathroom. He doesnât need to flip on the light, but he does. The counter is clean. Jasonâs bottleâs stack up neatly, and Salimâs are always a little bit of chaos.
It doesnât matter, there is nothing.
Jason takes the stairs two at a time, grabbing his phone back off the kitchen counter he feels like he can barely breathe.
Heâs panicking. Hands shaking, it takes three attempts to hit the âcallâ button next to Salimâs number.
It rings.
âPick up, pick up, pick up, come on⌠please⌠baby please pick up!â
He paces the kitchen, moving through into their living room Jason repeats this as the phone keeps ringing.
The bookcase is almost completely empty too.
âF-Fuck!â Jasonâs voice sounds on the edge of tears, âBaby, please!!â
He turns, and the phone drops to the floor. Sitting on the living room table is a set of Jasonâs house keys.
Jason knows they belong to his house, because they are in shades of green: Salimâs favourite colour. Jason had them cut that way when he decided they couldnât live together on one set of keys when their shifts didnât exactly line up.
He staggers backwards, having to steady himself against the door.
Jason canât breathe. Heâs trying. But reality is setting in, and reality feels more like a bad dream.
âSALIM!â It is not a scream â itâs meant to be, thatâs what Jason feels like doing but thereâs no air. His voice cracks everywhere.
He sinks to the floor, eyes welling up. Jason canât stop it. His breathing makes his whole body heave. Heâs starting to hyperventilate. But it doesnât stop the tears. And once they start thereâs no going back.
Jasonâs whole body seems to cave in on itself and itâs not long before heâs collapsed on the floor, crying so much heâs shaking. The only reason Jason can breathe at all is the air that continues to force itself into his lungs so he can cry more.
Itâs more like screaming than sobbing. And putting his hands over his face does nothing to make it quieter. Jasonâs body quakes as he sobs, throat tightening as he takes on air again.
Heâs crying so much he feels like heâs going to be sick. Hell, Jason might be sick anyway.
His hand runs to his heart â itâs beating so erratically that Jason swears heâs having some kind of panic attack.
He hasnât done something like this since he was a child. And never due to heartbreak.
But this is really happening.
Salim is really gone.
Even thinking this to himself makes Jasonâs eyes burn as fresh tears are brought to the surface.
It was like he had never lived here. But Salim was there. And it was so real to JasonâŚ
Heâs screaming again, but itâs incoherent. Even Jason isnât exactly sure what heâs trying to yell through his heartbreak.
Salim was always too good for him â that much was obvious. But was it ever real to him? Was Jason just a game he was playing?
Jason didnât think Salim could be cruel. Not like this.
This doesnât make any sense.
Salim chased him. That devastates Jason even more. Salim roped him in and then left without saying anything?!
Clearly, Salim just took pity on him, indulged him for a bit. And Jason was so stupid to think that he could ever truly be loved in this way.
Salim was so done that he didnât even want to stay one more second to say goodbye to Jason. He just couldnât stand it any longer.
Jason must have eventually calmed down. It feels like he blacks out for a while as he drowns himself in misery. But heâs still lying on the floor. He isnât sure exactly how long heâs been lying here - but tears still sporadically trickle down his cheeks.
As far as Jason is concerned, he would be happy to lie here forever.
It must tick over into afternoon, because eventually the home phone rings, Jason doesnât count the number of times but itâs a lot. And then his mobile â still where he dropped it â starts ringing too. Itâs probably Eric â wondering where the fuck he is â or Nick, worried about him. Or Dar, wondering where Salim is because Jason highly doubts Salim would have gone into work after leaving here. Not in the way he left. Itâs a small town; it would be more than just awkward.
As he finds himself thinking about Salim again Jasonâs heart starts aching, his vision blurs up again. He places his hand over his heart; sniffing to try to hold the tears in properly this time. It doesnât work. âP-please stopâŚ!â He thinks heâs yelling at himself. He doesnât want to feel like this⌠Jason rolls over onto his side to curl up into a ball, the sounds heâs making now more like whimpers. His throat is so sore. Jason feels exhausted; but the tears keep coming.
There is eventually a knock on his door. âJason!? Salim!?â Itâs Rachel King. Eric must have sent her over. Heâs not answering. Jason doesnât feel like he has the strength to get up off the floor. Jason curls up even further into a ball and wills her to go away. In a sense heâs annoyed that they would send her over; now the neighbours are bound to talk⌠She tries a couple more times but doesnât stick around once sheâs unsuccessful.
Once Jason feels that he can actually move, itâs growing dark. He pushes himself slowly up onto his feet. Collecting his mobile off the floor he doesnât dare even look at the missed calls. His background is himself and Salim. And Jason right now just wants to make it back upstairs without breaking down again.
He stumbles towards them, well aware that lining the stairwell are also collections of pictures of them both. âFucking stop, Jason Kolchek. Donât you fucking dare.â His body wonât listen though, and his eyes canât help but stray to them. His heart clenches once more in pain. If he thought he had the strength to run, he would.
Part of him wants to pull every one of them down right now. Just let the frames drop and the glass smash and leave them like that. How can he though, up until he woke up that was his whole world. Salim was everything to JasonâŚ
He makes it to bed, collapsing into it. He feels safe there, pulling the sheets over himself he creates a cocoon out of the blanket. But the minute he inhales heâs hit with a million different memories. Fuck. The sheets smell like him too. Jason clamps his hand over his mouth as he whines. FUCK! The rivulets run from his eyes and down his hands.
They drip onto the sheets below him and Jason buries his head as he starts whimpering. This is punishment, isnât it? Jason has never had his heart broken before. Heâs broken hearts â heâs been awfully good at that - heâs had relationships that simply drifted apart. But never had his own heart broken.
But heâs also never loved like this before. If youâd have asked Jason yesterday, he would have said Salim was it. He never would love anyone again.
âŚHell, maybe Jason still never would.
***
Once he calms down again â and Jason is surprised he really has this many tears to cry â he lifts his head out from under his blanket cocoon.
He wonders how long Salim has really been gone; first glancing to the clock on his bedside table. Itâs early evening; did he even sleep here last night? Did he wait for Jason to drift off and go? Did he stay for a while, until the sun started rising? How hard was it for Salim to leave â did he overthink it? Did he turn back? Was it painful? Or did he walk out of here without a second thought for his actions?
If he was hurting as much as Jason was right now; heâd surely already have been back.
Jason turns to Salimâs side of the bed â maybe there was something else at play here. Jason reaches over, pulling open the bedside drawer and something inside rattles. He knows immediately why. He pulls it all the way out; reaching right into the back, Jason finds exactly what he expects to.
He touches a cold rectangle of metal, gathering it between his fingers he shifts his hands over slightly to find the accompanying cardboard box. Drawing his hand out, Jason deposits the cigarettes on the table, before turning the lighter over in his hand. If Salim was in a hurry he wouldnât have reached into the back of the drawer to find these; the only reason he would have missed them was if he wasnât being careful. Because he pushes them so far back thinking Jason is unaware they exist.
Of course Jason knows he smokes. Despite Salimâs insistence heâs quitting. Nick has got him to do it more socially now. Jason tells him theyâll kill him, but Salim always gives him a look like he doesnât quite believe it.
The lighter is nice too. Itâs gold in colour, engraved with inscriptions. Jason is surprised heâs left it, maybe heâll miss it. Maybe heâll come back for it and Jason can confront him then.
âŚWill Jason confront him? Itâs more likely at this stage heâll collapse into Salimâs arms crying and begging him to stay.
Jason flips the lighter open and closed, and open and closed again.
Did something, or someone make Salim leave in such a hurry?
He places the lighter down on the table next to the pack of cigarettes, rolling it back and forth on its corners with his index finger.
Jason gets sad again, but in a different light. Almost melancholic. This all that remains that shows this man was real.
The lighter slips and clatters against the tabletop, making Jasonâs eyes focus on the picture behind it. He moves his hand to the frame, about to push it down the way Salim had left it. But he stops, frowning.
He supposes that he has photos too, countless memories. Itâs the memories that are going to haunt Jason the most.
He pulls himself away from Salimâs side of the bed, rolling himself back up in the sheets. Jason rubs his eyes, staring at the ceiling. Heâs exhausted. His heart is shattered.
Jason wonders if heâll even be able to get to sleep. But he should at least tryâŚ
He crosses his arms over his chest, sighing dejectedly.
âFuck, Salim⌠I really loved you⌠Did you not love me too?â
***
Jason canât sleep â he lies awake watching the numbers tick up until about 3am. This is a waste of timeâŚ
He rolls back out of bed, grabbing Salimâs cigarettes and lighter as he does so, Jason heads back downstairs and onto the back porch.
He leans against the back of the house, pulling open the packet. Salim so often talks about quitting these things. And to his credit, only two are missing from the box.
Jason takes another from the box, placing it between his lips. Jason has smoked before, but never cigarettes. He can imagine itâs all much of a muchness.
He flicks the lighter, staring at the flames in the darkness for a minute before lighting the end of the cigarette. He takes a drag. The warmth and the burning sensation feel good but otherwise it makes him cough. The smoky taste rolls over his tongue and thatâs nice, but heâs not a fan of anything else.
The bitter doesnât do it for him. He breathes the smoke out into the air, tilting his head back to stare at the moon. He takes another drag keeping the warmth with him for a while longer, before he stubs out the rest of the cigarette on the side of his house.
He doesnât understand how Salim and Nick like smoking these. Jason keeps breathing in the cool air, wondering just how far Salim will have got by now. He looks back to the lighter: if Salim was going to come back for it, wouldnât he have by now?
When it gets a little too cold for him Jason heads back inside, he throws the cigarettes back in the draw but places the lighter on his side of the bed.
Jason settles back down into the sheets â somehow managing to feel worse than before. He knows by now he isnât going to sleep. And by the time the sun starts rising, Jason has proven that to himself.
He hasnât set his alarm for work. His brain is running wild with overthinking.
About how he was never good enough for Salim, heâs never really been good enough for anyone. He didnât deserve love like this. Jason didnât deserve anything. He was exactly what his parents had always said he was. Salim had proven them right tooâŚ
Jason was broken. And he was drowning in all his awful thoughts.
The day drags on; his mobile buzzes on the table. And his doorbell does go later on. But what the fuck is the point of getting up?
Heâs devastated.
Thereâs nothing left for him.
There is nothing that will get Jason to leave this bed now.
Nick swears heâs pressed the doorbell five times. Thereâs still no answer. He stares at the outside of the house. âThis is fuckinâ pointless man. Heâs just pulling a sick day.â Merwin and Joey have accompanied him, Merwin less than willingly. Nick sighs, looking to the driveway. Jasonâs truck is the only one still sitting here. âSalimâs car is goneâŚâ Nick walks up and down the front of the house to see if thereâs any obvious signs of people inside. âMaybe theyâre out?â âYou should have heard what his manager said-â Nick did; Dar came into the bar last night angry, expecting Jason to be there. The things he was accusing Jason of simply because Salim had not been at work were downright horrifying. âDar hates Jason, we all know that.â No good in stirring that up as town gossip. Nick tries knocking again, this time more forceful, âJASON!?â
Once again there is nothing. Even when they wait. Maybe Nick will try again tomorrow. He looks back to where Salimâs car is gone.
Surprise trip, maybe? Nick thinks Salim is romantic enough for that â Jason is so damn in love why would he let anyone know they were off.
It might be as best just to wait. Nick would text him. For now, they would get nothing here.
***
It takes almost a week for Jason to be seen again. Nick drives by the house nearly every day; Salimâs car is still gone. No lights on. No one has heard from either of them. Rachel is one person â and apparently none of the signs are alarming enough for it to turn into a missing persons case. No one wants the real authorities crawling all over this town.
Jason is still late for work when his truck pulls into the foundry parking lot. Eric is immediately out of his office and stalking across the ground. Nick, who is luckily on break, runs to stop him. Telling Eric to think about it, before pushing him back towards the office. At least Jason is here again now. They should hear whatâs up before they all get angry at him.
Although when Jason clambers down from his truck, Nick thinks the answer canât be good. He looks like hell. He canât have shaved, combed his hair or slept for the past week. Nick doesnât think heâs been outside; heâs paler than normal, eyes red, he looks half focused.
âJasonâŚâ Nick runs to him, âBuddy, we were worried sick, what happened man?â Jason still doesnât know exactly how to articulate it. He rubs his eyes as if heâs still crying. He opens his mouth to try, but, the sounds that come out are barely words. Heâs not been out of bed at all since Salim left. The one cigarette was it. Salim hasnât come home for the lighter, or anything else. Jason has really seen little point in looking after himself; he has no motivation.
But the house doesnât pay for itself, and Jason knows that heâll have to return to the world at some point. Heâs surprised heâs not already been fired on the spot.
âWe came by the house, everything okay?â
Jason at first nods â because he knew they had â and then shakes his head: because nothing will ever be okay again.
âHeâs goneâŚâ Nick is shocked momentarily, surely Jason canât mean⌠ââŚWhat?â âSalim.â Jasonâs voice cracks over his name, âHe left.â âFuck, manâŚâ Nick doesnât know how else he can express it; he pulls his best friend into a hug â Jason doesnât return it, but he feels fragile. âIâm so sorry.â ââŚHe didnât say anything, Nicky. He just up and left, middle of the night.â Jason mumbles. Nick pulls back, âSeriously?!â Jason gives a shrug, what else can he say? Nick pats his shoulder, âWe havenât heard anything from him either, Jason. He really must be justâŚÂ gone. Jesus, why?â Jason shakes his head again, sniffing he rubs his eyes, âCan we just get to work.â âHell nah.â Nick bars Jason from heading inside for his things, âNot before we get you cleaned up a little man. Did you eat this morning?â This morning? Jason almost laughs but shakes his head. ââŚYou eaten at all.â Jason shakes his head again. âMan, itâs been a week.â Nick sighs, âDamn, I know you so well.â He drags Jason with him, âCome on, letâs get you showered at least.â
Nick almost throws Jason into the communal bathroom with his things â itâs meant for the end of the day not the beginning of it, but someone has to look out for him right now. Eric comes over, looking unimpressed. âAnd? Whatâs the excuse?â Nick turns back to make sure the water is still running but lowers his voice, âSalim left him. But I donât mean like broke up⌠Jason said he left, in the middle of the night.â âYou believe him?â Ericâs raised eyebrow tells Nick he does not. âDonât tell me youâre putting stock in the bullshit Dar has been spewing? Jason didnât do anything - Salimâs car is gone, Jason looks like a wreck. Heâs heartbroken, Eric!â Eric sighs, âJust⌠ease him into whatever your team has got going on. If heâs a state, I donât want him leading the team this week, got it?â âYes sir.â
Jason appears about ten minutes later, dressed ready to work. âYou brush your teeth?â âYeah.â Nick throws him an energy bar, itâs the best heâs got on site right now. âItâs not going to be anywhere near enough, but I need you to eat before I let you in there.â âNickyâŚâ âEric just said I canât let you lead the team this week, and donât tell me youâre fine, Jason. You are not fine. The love of your life just left you.â Jason thinks thatâs fair enough, choosing to remain silent he decides to eat the food. Nick leans against the wall, voice lowered in concern, âAny idea why? Or where?â Jason shakes his head, âCan we not do this now.â âBuddyâŚâ Nick doesnât know how to say it gently, âPeople with nothing to hide donât just disappear.â
Jasonâs eyes immediately harden, âDonât you dare!â âMan leaves you in the middle of the night and youâre going to defend him? Jason!â âYou have no idea why he left!!â âOkay, so if I ask you what you did?â Jason immediately backs up, hurt. âExactly, man. He had a reason to go, and he wasnât man enough to tell you why. Jason, that isnât on you. And I need you to focus on work, can you do that?â Jason takes a deep breath, âSure.â
He's trying to act normal about it. But how can Jason be normal about it. Hard to act around all his friends as if itâs just a regular break up like heâs had before. Jason gave Salim everything. He couldnât just forget that.
Theyâre all in shock: both to see Jason back and to hear what he has to say. Which is minimal. Jason doesnât really feel like talking to anyone. He also doesnât want their comfort, or anything negative they have to say about Salim. Neither is going to help him now. Nick sets him some fairly easy solo work, but keeps an eye on him all day. Jasonâs not engaged properly, heâs not ready to throw himself into it, but at least heâs working. At least itâs something to take his mind off the way his thoughts are swimming. The warmth of the foundry provides a little comfort, for which he is grateful. Itâs nice not to have to be at home. Even though that is where he will have to return.
By the end of the day heâs exhausted, and Jason hopes that means sleep will come easy. He drives home, and only eats because he has to. His idea of cooking is to survive â and he realises very quickly how much of Salim heâs going to miss. He can barely taste it; itâs just sustenance. Jason dumps his dishes in the sink, and pulls his phone out of his pocket. Itâs instinct; and his heart still aches when he looks at the lock screen picture. Nothing. Jason doesnât have it in him to change it.
If his friends think that heâs going to get over this like itâs just a heavy breakup, they are sadly mistaken. Jasonâs eating now, and heâs managing to sleep. Heâs plagued by bad dreams and restlessness that has him up and down all night, but for Jasonâs health a few hours are better than nothing. They try to leave him be as much as look out for him because heâs becoming snappy and argumentative. As he was before Salim showed up â Salim was the one to teach him about healthy and regulated emotions and now it was like Jason was becoming regressive.
Ericâs attempt to discipline him, as the site lead, doesnât go over well with Jason either.
At least before if they argued on site it was because both of them are tired and frustrated at the end of a long day. Now itâs because Jasonâs got the energy for so much negativity to cloud his judgement.
If they arenât leaving him alone, Jason is finding ways to be alone. And Nick is always encountering him wandering between the crucibles. Shop can be 113F at ambient temperature, and Jason is being too reckless. Nick keeps having to pull him out of there, but Jason seems like he doesnât care that heâs anywhere near that close to them in the first place.
And Nick wonders if he actually doesnât. The heat not bothering him is not Nickâs concern, but the fact that if Jason stumbles into one of these things the temperature of the structure will give him more than just third-degree burns. Itâs more likely to burn him to death.
More than once heâs had to decide enough is enough and send Jason home early. (Rather him than have Jason get into another argument with Eric).
Nick counts himself lucky that Jason isnât yet clambering to the top where itâs really hot and spending too much time up there. Nick has known it to get up to 130-150 at the worst of times. He doesnât want to think about what happens if his friend falls into molten metal. That would be a hell of a thing to have to tell health and safety.
The height fall that happened a couple of weeks back had been bad enough. That and Salim together had probably messed with Jasonâs mental state in ways Nick couldnât possibly fathom.
Tonight when Jason drives home alone, he sits in his truck on the driveway for a while. Heâs been staring at the front door, but he doesnât want to head inside. His thoughts are a mess; they call to him with temptations that go from bad to worse. He wants them to shut up. Being inside by himself will not aid that.
He scratches behind his ear, and when he pulls his hand away his fingers are tarnished with ash. Jason rubs the fine grey power between them. Heâs clearly missed a spot when cleaning up at work before heading off. Images flash back to him clearly â hitting harder than his truck could â Salimâs skin and clothes dusted in dark grey everywhere Jason had touched him, or peppered him with kisses after work. How sometimes Salim would make things worse by squirming around laughing or actively pressing their foreheads together, Jasonâs legs around his waist. Jason wouldnât call himself possessive exactly, but it always made his ego swell a little to watch Salim wander around with those marks covering him, rather than wiping them off immediately.
Jason has to bite his lip hard enough to draw blood to stop himself from crying out in anguish again. No, he couldnât go home. Not right now.
There was only one other place he could go for sanctuary.
The bar is almost empty when he enters, Clarice acknowledges him with a nod and small smile as he makes his way over to the bar. She already has a beer waiting for him by the time he finds a seat. âOn the house, sweetheart.â She isnât exactly sure if heâs looking at her with thanks or in pain. He takes the bottle and takes a sip. Clarice folds her arms on the other side of the bar. âIâm so sorry, JasonâŚâ Jason just stares at the bottle, âMhm.â Clarice knows better than to pry with him, sheâs sure everyone will have been trying to do that already. âI really liked him, Jason. You wereâŚâ She stops, âYou know that you were good together.â He merely nods.
She notes that he looks so dull. Like Salim really killed his sunshine and energy. She isnât surprised; Jason had made Salim the source of all his happiness, because he thought it was safe too.
Jason finishes his beer in silence before asking for another, Clarice smiles as she places it on the counter for him, rubbing the back of his hand affectionately.
Clarice doesnât understand it herself; Salim was a good guy. He was always so genuine. She was sure he felt the same way about Jason. That he was happy here. Something else must be at play, but now isnât the time to try reasoning this with the man in front of her.
He isnât just sad, heâs borderline depressed. Sheâll cut Jason off if he goes too far, but while heâs in here, heâs not going crazy elsewhere.
âI see him everywhere, Clarice.â His sudden speech, a little too loud, makes her jump. Jason takes a gulp from the bottle, âEverywhere in this fucking town. As if heâs right there, the corner of my eye. I can fucking hear him. Fuck, sometimes I turn to tell him something and then I realiseâŚâ She looks over to Jason but freezes before she can speak; he suddenly has glassy, dead eyes. Heâs staring at one spot, but itâs like heâs not even seeing.
It makes Clarice shiver. Enough to force her to talk, âJa-â
âMaybe I should just die.â
This time when she shudders itâs much more visible. Thereâs something psychotic about the intensity he just spoke with.
âJason!â
âI could take the whole fucking place with meâŚâ
âJASON!â
She slaps her hand on his arm, but those dead eyes are still present.
âI was never good enough for him. What am I even worth now?â
âJason,â she shakes him, âstop it!â
âWho the fuck would even notice if something happened to me? He didnât want me, why would anyone else?â
âJason!â Now Clarice sounds frightened, âPlease! Youâre scaring me!â
This makes him look up to her, no less intense. He swallows hard, âIâm going crazy, Clarice.â
She can tell, âJason, all your friends care about you⌠please donât talk like that.â
His expression remains intense, âIâm sorry.â
He doesnât sound very sorry. She places her hand out, âJason give me your keys!â
Jason snorts, âClarice Iâve had one.â
âTwo!â She points â the bottle on the bar and the one in his hand - âIâm calling Nick, give me your keys!â
He opens his mouth, but for the first time he notices how frightened she looks. And sheâs scared of him. Jasonâs not happy about it, exactly, and he sighs. But he pulls the keys out of his pocket and gives them to her.
Clarice implores him, âPlease, do not go anywhere.â
Nick turns up soon after, apologising profusely to Clarice for Jasonâs actions. She tells him not to worry. But when he asks exactly what Jason was saying to freak her out, Clarice shakes her head. Jason is still sitting silently on his bar stool finishing his second drink. She opts for âcreepy nonsense.â Nick presses her, making Clarice uneasy. âHe talked about⌠hurting himself, or⌠someone, something⌠Nick heâs not himself.â Nick agrees, that much is obvious, his voice is quiet, âSalim leaving really fucked him up.â Clarice looks over to Jason, and her heart hurts for him. She nods â he looks so alone. Â
She thinks Nickâs observation is an understatement.
 ***
The phone rings again. Jason waits to be greeted with the same âleave a voicemailâ chime, all the while moving Salimâs lighter between his fingers. Heâs long since given up hope that this time Salim will actually answer. But Jason has never left a message before. Heâs not really known what to say. Thereâs a desperation to it now â what might be Jasonâs last chance to salvage anything. Maybe if Salim can hear for himself how broken Jason is it will convince him to change his mind.
When the message clicks, Jason starts. His voice shakes a little but heâs able to hold it together. âH-Hey, baby⌠I know youâreâŚÂ long fucking gone by now. But, I⌠Did I do something wrong? Tell me what I did. Baby I can fix this, please⌠please come back⌠please come home.â He swallows thickly, âSalim, I need youâŚâ
Thereâs nothing else to say. Jason hangs up, but he stares at the screen for a while. Heâs sent a string of texts too. None of them sound quite as pathetic as he feels, but sometimes Jason hopes that at the very least heâll be left on read. Not even that.
He places the phone face down on the step beside him, and turns his attention to the lighter. It has been of some comfort to him, being the one piece of Salim he has left. Itâs something he can hold on to. Jason flips the lighter open, striking the fly wheel. The flame dances, strong but gentle, for a few seconds before Jason flicks his hand to close it again. This is a motion that he repeats. Watching the flame glow for a few seconds at a time before extinguishing it.
He is entranced. And this is exactly how Nick finds him when he turns up. Nick has taken it upon himself to check up on Jason every evening after work. Heâll leave it a few hours after heâs gone home, just so Jason can âsettleâ â if thatâs something he can even do currently. After what Clarice said, Nick doesnât want Jason to do anything drastic, but he also thinks his best friend could use the company. Whether or not Jason is talkative or actually wants any right now.
If heâs continually left alone Jason will go insane. Nick is usually content just to sit with him for a bit, even if itâs in silence.
Jason is sitting on the front steps, his face illuminated by a soft orange glow in consistent intervals before falling into shadow again. Nick realises why this is as he approaches.
Jason is once again staring at nothing in particular, flicking Salimâs lighter open and closed. The phone beside him might be face down, but Nick knows heâs waiting for a call that isnât coming.
Nick watches Jason continue this motion for a minute, before sighing and sitting on the steps with him. Jason does not acknowledge his presence. Nick wouldnât be surprised if he didnât notice. âI donât think heâs coming back, buddy.â He nods towards Jasonâs front door, âLetâs go inside.â
Thereâs a slight chill in the air, given itâs growing dark.
Jason remains silent, he just continues to stare forward. This hiss of the flame coming to life is starting to grate on Nickâs nerves a little; and he takes Jasonâs hand to steady it.
âJason, come on, come inside.â
Nick stands, attempting to pull Jason with him â but the smaller man doesnât budge.
âJason!?â
Nothing. Nick lets him go, and Jason returns to the same lighter motion. He shakes his head. âFine, you leave me no choice but to stay here tonight.â
The silence remains thick; haunting. Nick returns to sitting with Jason; apart from carrying the smaller man inside heâs not sure exactly what he can do here.
Jason is so shattered that Nick isnât even sure there is anyone who can pick up all the pieces besides Jason himself. And itâs very clear that right now, this is the furthest thing from his mind.
***
Itâs late at night and the bar is closed, but six people are still gathered around a table. This is an intervention. Except Jason isnât present just yet. They need to do this carefully â Jason is balancing precariously and no one wants to be the catalyst that sends him over the edge. They could be random intrusive thoughts, yes, or Jason could seriously be considering harming himself or others in the town.
Either way heâs so off kilter that itâs starting to be disturbing. And not just to their group of friends â there have been comments made by others in the community.
They start with the obvious question. âWhat the fuck is going on with him?â but the potential solution to his behaviour puzzles all of them. The trigger is the only clear answer. The fix â not so much. Each of them wonder if it might be that they need to try to find a way to contact Salim themselves â after all, if itâs Jason he broke up with, itâs Jason he isnât going to want to hear from.
But they have no way of knowing where he went, and very few in the group have his contact details. Nick tries on a whim, but it bounces to voicemail. What exactly will they even say to him?
Rachel ponders on if she could do some digging â and they all wonder if they should chase after someone who doesnât appear to want to be found.
All they know is it canât keep going on like this. Jason is going to hurt himself or hurt someone else. So there has to be something that they can do as a group.
Each of them recounts all the weird stuff Jason has been doing of late. Nick, Joey and Merwin have the most stories, working with him daily. Jason wandering around on the lower floors was one thing but now heâd taken to standing up over the top of the crucibles. Exactly what Nick had been afraid of. People died at foundries when they were being safe, but Jasonâs actions of late had been downright reckless. They had all caught him standing at the end of the platforms and staring down into the molten metals below. Nick shudders to think of that eerie orange glow illuminating his whole body the way the lighter flame had. Those far away dead looking eyes, as if he was resigned to jumping. Fascinated by the very idea of it. They had all tried to pull him back; tell him he was only going to get hurt, but Jason kept shoving them off. They stop scuffling, not only because if they arenât careful Jason will send them all over the edge, but because of the way he bitterly declares that he doesnât care.
Jason has always been a little too attracted to the danger of open flames and molten metal, he thrives in the environment they work in. But heâs also always been the one to make sure everyone else is safe first â sometimes by throwing himself into the danger. Jason is always protecting the other workers or lecturing them on safety. Do as I say not as I do.
To hear him say he doesnât care is a little too much for the other threeâŚ
Jason also abhors smoking. Everyone knew that. Very much likely to hound you about how bad it was for your health and also should you really be doing that around this kind of industry!? And these buildings!? THINK! He wasnât happy about Salim doing it, but that was his compromise. For Nick to find him out the back of the workshop doing it is shocking. Jason tries to hide the cigarette the second heâs been caught but thatâs not the easiest thing to do. âSeriously man!? What has gotten into you?!â Jason looks to the cigarette burning in his hand. Heâs so desperate for something that feels like Salim. Feel a little bit closer to him. He craves that taste of smoke too: perhaps hoping that if enough fills his lungs it will choke him. Nick knows about the lighter; so the cigarettes are also probably whatever Salim had left. He knows Jason is trying not to sound psychotic. He definitely doesnât want to be judged for doing something he is so against.
It's worrying that things have got this farâŚ
Clarice shakes her head, chewing on a fingernail, bringing the circle back around. Itâs unfathomable. All of it. Did Salim naĂŻvely think Jason wouldnât be affected? Even if he did, could he really have seen this reaction coming from a man who had always seemed so stable. âI just canât believe it⌠Salim of all people? Just skipping town like that? And on Jason⌠without a word?â
Nick is equally melancholic. âJason was fine before, but the past few years? His mentality revolved around that man⌠now look.â Salim had accidentally released deeply buried traumas from Jasonâs past. Nick knows a couple of them, but there were sure to be others. He built Salim up too high, like a saviour from all his problems. But that only works when Salim is still aroundâŚ
Merwin folds his arms, tapping his near empty beer bottle against his arm, âHeh, as far as Iâm concerned Jason got too close to the fire and got burned. Loved too hard too fast.â
Nick looks across to him, half in disgust: âCome on man, be serious. You saw Salim. Cool guy, a little mysterious. But Jason didnât even know there was a fire fucking burning.â
âSomething is upâŚâ Clarice agrees, âSalim was a mystery, but he loved Jason like Jason loved him. We all saw it!!â Everyone falls into silent nodding. Eric is the one to speak up: âYeah. Maybe we were wrong though. And itâs unhinged Jason. Whatever happenedâŚâ
âBlaming Salim is easy, Jasonâs attitude and behaviour isnât on his ex to fixâŚâ Clarice looks to the table, âWhatever is up with Jason, heâs fucking scaring me.â
No one else speaks. But they are all glad sheâs said it.
***
By this point, none of them realise, they are far too late.
"They say that the best blaze burns brightest, when circumstances are at their worst." Jason remembers the quote from a movie Salim made him watch once. Thatâs bullshit. How can circumstances get any worse than this. Jason isnât rising to any occasion, whatever fire was in him â hopes, dreams and sunshine, itâs all gone. Salim has singlehandedly snuffed it all out.
Perhaps the quote runs through his mind now to tell him that what heâs doing makes sense. Itâs not about being the blaze, but about creating it.
There is too much memory here, and to purge the memory, there has to be nothing to remember. And while Jason cannot do anything about whatâs left in his head. He can damn well do something about every physical reminder.
Thatâs why heâs at a gas station out of town, filling cans. This is not a last resort. This is Jasonâs only resort. His actions are strangely calm and methodical, but he looks like a man possessed. The store assistant â who definitely isnât paid enough to care, especially at this time of night â seems hesitant to even give Jason the sale. But his intensity is frightening, and the guy might just be doing it in fear of his own life.
Jason departs the station; heâs driving way over the speed limit. A little on the reckless side now, but he doesnât care. He has to do this quickly.
His mind is already made up. Just like heâs sure Salimâs would have been.
When he gets home, he wastes no time; immediately dumping gasoline on the floor of his hallway he trails it through the living room and into the kitchen, then up the stairs. He brushes against all the picture frames as he goes and several of them tumble; spilling cracked glass onto the floor. The ones that donât end up knocked out of place and crooked. He discards the first can in the bedroom; soaking the sheets before he starts on the second one, leaving that one to pour out over the bannisters and cascade onto the floor below.
He's only satisfied when he feels the headache set in from the gas fumes. Jason checks that he has missed no spots, before walking back outside. By now the gasoline has dripped down his front steps too.
He walks down to the driveway, staring at his truck. Itâs not likely to survive this. Jason touches her hood delicately for a moment. Sheâs been good to him, but heâs not going to need her where heâs going.
From his back pocket he pulls the photograph that used to sit on Salimâs bedside table. He walks slowly back towards the house while not taking his eyes from it.
Jason brushes his fingers over the photograph, and his heart aches again.
He wishes he could have seen Salim, one last time. But itâs over now. Everything is over for Jason.
He pulls the gold lighter out of his other pocket, and flips it open, Jason flicks the flywheel until the flame appears.
âGoodbye, babyâŚâ
He holds the lighter flame to the edge of the photograph until it catches. Holding it as it curls up; the colours bubble away from the paper, the fire spreading to about halfway before Jason raises his head to look once more at the house.
Most of this town is wooden and old anyway; it will catch nicely. It will catch fast.
Jason lets the photograph go; the gasoline immediately ignites as the two touch. He watches as the flame moves quickly through his house, setting everything it meets alight.
Jason smiles watching it creep up the stairs, he steps back to admire his handywork as the outside starts catching too. The heat of the flames is warming; comforting. It calls to him.
The grass is dry, thereâs a breeze, the conditions are perfect for what Jason wants.
The fire travels quick either side to the neighbouring houses, it licks up the sides â the paint starts peeling off the dried planks, and they start to catch too.
Jason canât help but feel a spark of excitement within him. Thereâs something beautiful about fire running wild. No one to stop it. Heâs only sad he wonât get to see it engulf the whole damn town.
He steps up into the house and enters. Jason knows he wonât exit again.
***
Jason finds it all strangely calming. The heat of the flames, the smoke â maybe itâs simply the acceptance of whatâs about to happen to him.
It doesnât take long for him to hear the chaos outside. Heâs left the front door open so he can observe some of it. Hear people screaming and running, cars taking off with whatever they are able to grab in a few seconds.
But soon that is overtaken by the roar of the flames inside. The way his house creaks and buckles as it weakens against the gnawing of the fire. The smoke thickens and his visibility lessens. Jason doesnât really care.
It starts to sting at his eyes and he tries not to take deep breaths. He doesnât want to asphyxiate before he burns.
He stands in the entry way between the hall and the living room. He has a clear view of the table on which Salim left his keys. Jason has laid them out again in exactly the same order, but theyâve already melted into the wood, which is charred beyond recognition. Jason has already died here; as far as heâs concerned heâs only finishing off his physical presence. Turns out he could do something about the memories in his head too.
Pieces of the ceiling and wall begin flaking; falling onto the ground below. Jason is ready. He steps forward, the fire catching his clothing first.
He watches the flames travel up his legs, then his shirt. Itâs scorching; making his breath catch. Short. Sharp. Itâs painful but heâs never felt calmer. Jason thinks his body is going into shock. The fire licks across his skin â his face scrunches in a wince but he doesnât cry out. Heâs fascinated.
This almost feels freeing.
His legs collapse from under him but Jason doesnât really feel that â just realises that heâs suddenly on his knees on the floor. His whole body is engulfed and even given where he works, heâs never felt heat like this. Jason doesnât think even if he wanted to scream he could now. Lungs filled with smoke, and ash and fire. Vocal chords fried.
He closes his eyes; submitting entirely to the fire that engulfs him.
Jason feels no remorse for what heâs done. Only fascination. A sense of completeness seeing this town purged like the memories that haunt him.
Itâs been a dry, warm summer. The fire spreads quickly through the wooden buildings. There is no fire department in town. There is only Sheriff Rachel King; and her first priority is evacuation.
Just as Jason wishes, heâs taking the whole town with him.
***
In the just under two weeks since he left, Salim really hasnât got too far. Thereâs always a break period, a little bit of time to decide where to drift next before he heads there. There is always a calling within him, one to the next. Heâll move where his body wills it. Salim likes smaller towns because everyone is less likely to ask questions. But he canât choose one too near to the town heâs just left. And after Jason he needs a change of scene. Memories are powerful things, and heâs learning that now more than ever.
Heâs flitting between motels, a day here, a day thereâŚ
Heâs also not sleeping well. Which is why heâs sitting in a 24hr diner sipping coffee. He doesnât necessarily need to sleep. But he canât deny the whole experience has been draining. Itâs been a lot harder than he expected. Every time Jason pops up on his phone again with a string of calls, Salim just stares at it until he stops. He can never quite bring himself to block the number.
The radio is a local station; itâs playing music softly in the background and Salim is paying about as much attention to it as anyone else is. The TV is on mute, playing some repeat of a sports match that the few other people in here are glancing at every so often. Itâs mostly truck drivers; Salim is just looking to keep himself occupied.
Heâs just been offered another refill when he hears it. Thereâs some emergency news announcement, not to go near the town, traffic diversions, evacuations. The town is burning to the ground.
Salimâs eyes widen. No! This is why he disappeared, when he goes things like this arenât supposed to happen. He left to stop this from happening. Why?! Thatâs been the pattern, always, he leaves and things go back to normal. Doesnât matter how bad things get, heâs never heralded something heâs not been around to witness.
Jason!
Salimâs first and only thought. The coffee is burning but he throws it back anyway, before standing abruptly and throwing down the appropriate money. He dashes out to his car and starts the engine.
Please be okay⌠Jason, please be okayâŚ
Salim canât help himself. He might have left, but in the end Salim loved him. The last thing heâd want was Jason injured, or worse.
He knows exactly where heâs heading, heâs ignoring warnings, but Salim knows he wonât get hurt. He canât get hurt.
What if Jason didnât make it out? What the hell caused thisâŚ!?
The closer he gets the more he can see the smoke rising in the distance; complementing the ominous orange glow on the horizon. Eventually that dies down, and the smoke changes from black through shades of grey.
Salim cannot get there quick enough, but he is horrified by what he sees in front of him. There is a point where the road becomes undrivable and he has to exit the car. Walking forward, dread starts to settle in the pit of his stomach.
Road becomes ashes, the town stretched before him is a smouldering shell of itself.
Nearly every building is collapsed or caved in, if any part remains at all. The town is levelled, even if the foundry in the distance is still standing and functional Salim canât see how this will ever recover and rebuild. Not the way it was.
How did this happen? He didnât understand⌠he was supposed to protect them allâŚ
The ashes crunch under Salimâs feet like snow. And fine powder blows through the air from where the towns remains were still hot enough to burn.
Salimâs heart is breaking; how did anyone survive this? The town was deadâŚ
The radio spoke of evacuations but there isnât a soul in sight, just how successful were they?
Did he leave everyone to die? All his friends? JasonâŚ
âŚPlease not JasonâŚ
Salim cursed himself: he left to protect him and, in the end, couldnât protect him at all? Fate could be that cruel, he already knew.
In the distance something moves, and Salim is drawn to it. He canât make it out from here, amongst the heat haze.
Salim takes a deep breath: someone survived? Please say someone survived this.
Salim takes off running.
He doesnât care who, if he can help them, he is resolved to.
***
Salim slows his run down the second he realises exactly who is still stuck in the middle of town. Salim has committed this man to memory a thousand times.
He knows the slopes and curves of this body, the ink on his skin, his stanceâŚ
âJason!?â
Jason turnâs slowly to the sound of his name. From that voice.
Relief floods Salim, âYouâre okay!â Jason speaks just as slowly, âWell I donât think Iâm meant to be, Iâm 90% sure I just died in that fire.â
He stops turning, eyes meeting Salimâs. âBut, here I am.â
Jason doesnât look like the Jason Salim remembers. Eyes glow like embers, not from reflection, but from within, his dark irisâs flecked and surrounded by orange. He glows. In a different way than he used to. Jasonâs skin is streaked in ash as if heâs been lying in it. But underneath the grey that coats him, is a glow of something else. Like rivers of liquid fire. Even his hair appears in gradients of brown to burning orange. A faint remnant of the glow that adorns him is present here, too, right in the ends of his hair. Salim notices these are fading quickly into Jasonâs natural brown. The sun has not risen yet, though itâs getting lighter. Salim thinks in his current form Jason would be good substitute for it.
Salim realises that Jason is not quite the man Salim believed him to be. His voice remains gentle, curious, âWhat are you?â âWhat do you mean what am I?!â Jason is still trying to come to terms with the fact that after trying to die in a fire of his own making; from which heâs now trudging through the ruins, heâs somehow still alive. Heâs hardly got the capacity to compute that Salim is also back. Salim realises Jason doesnât know. He walks forward through the ashes, Jason stays still. Heâs not backing away, but he does look guarded. For all those phone calls and text messages Jason is composed, Salim might think the man would throw himself at him for being back. Something has changed, Salim gets the sinking feeling that heâs standing in the aftermath of that. He reaches out, trying to take Jasonâs hands to have him face the evidence on his skin, but Jason pulls back, eyes harsh, they blaze a little more intensely. Heâs rightfully pissed off. âStop it! Donât touch me!!â Jason is hot. But this isnât just the normal temperature of his skin. Salim can feel that heat radiating from him and he is scorching. Salim notices â staring at Jasonâs hands, that he is gripping Salimâs lighter tightly. Salim had realised it was missing early, clearly Jason was holding onto it. To hold onto something. Heâs right, Jason set this fire. Jason burned this town down.
âDid you do this!?â Salim pulls back, horrified. Jason gestures with the lighter, âWhat do you think!?â Every time he raises his voice thereâs a throb to the glow that adorns him.
Jason refuses to feel guilty for it.
He feels lighter. Brighter. Reborn; like he has a chance to start fresh now. Only Salim had to walk right back into his lifeâŚ
Salim realises how ironic this is. Heâs the catalyst: he broke Jasonâs heart; he did not expect Jason to go off the deep end. Leaving to stop this in the end really did make it happen. Jason used his own lighter to do it. If Salim would have stayed, the town would not be in ruin, at least not like thisâŚ
They hear the cries of sirens in the distance. Jason doesnât quite realise the consequences of what heâs done. But heâs aware theyâll be coming for this town. When Salim turns himself slightly towards the sound, Jason can see something move in his eyes. It looks like a weather front; black and white shimmers that seem inhuman. This is something Jason has never noticed before; he wonders if now Salim is letting him notice them. Salim turns back and grabs Jasonâs hand, âWe have to go!â Jason resists, âWhat!?â âYou want to get thrown in prison for arson?! You just burned the place down Jason, we have to leave.â The Americanâs face hardens; âOh, so now you want to take me with you?â Salim sighs, the only way both of them get out of this is if he tells Jason the truth. Salim needs to make him understand. Jason might not be an entity, but he clearly has something about him too. Even if he doesnât know quite what yet. âJason⌠I am a reckoning. A warning. A herald of dark times, of the end. I canât ever stay in one place for too long. Or things like this-â Jason cuts over him, clearly still mad, âWhy didnât you just say something?!?â Salim looks at him in earnest, âWould you have believed me?â
He knows Jason wants to fight, to act like he would understand. Salim could believe that Jason would be so in love he wouldnât care. But look where that had got them all. Either way, Salim would have had to leave.
And Salim doesnât have time for Jason to madly pout at him in silence.
Salim grabs Jasonâs arms. He can feel that liquid fire pulsing and itâs scorching, if he would have been human Salim would have cried out in pain; as an entity, Jasonâs not harming him. âJason. No one is going to understand this.â This time he does make Jason look at the markings across his body, and although Jason is looking at them like he doesnât understand, he doesnât look scared of them. âWe can figure it out later, we need to go.â He looks to Jasonâs hands again, demanding. âGive me the lighter.â
âNO!â Jason pulls back, âYou left it.â
Salim sighs, giving Jason an equally stubborn look, voice rising slightly, âYou really want to do this here, now?!â
Jason folds his arms, âYou sure didnât fucking give me a choice before.â
âI donât want you to choose this.â He indicates to the town, Salim canât do anything about it, he is what he is⌠He doesnât want to subject Jason to that. Not now, not ever. âDo you understand?â
Jason is defiant, âThatâs not your decision.â
Salimâs eyes look suddenly sad, âJasonâŚâ
Jasonâs resolve breaks a little, that ember element to his eyes dims back to brown, he can see how much Salim is hurting. But Jason is hurting too. Heâs stubborn: âBad shit happens everywhere Salim!â Salim shakes his head, âNot like this. Not what I can bring.â
Jasonâs gaze falls back to his arms, the glow is fading, from his hair and eyes too. Salim can see he is returning back to a more normal state. âSeems to me like I can handle it.â
Salimâs voice rises again, firm, âI left to keep you from this.â
âAnd here we are!â
Salim sighs, realising heâs going to get nowhere in Jasonâs defiance. He looks back over his shoulder at the ever-approaching sirens, âJason, we donât have time.â He points to the car, just about visible at the end of the long main street, âGet in.â
âSo we can just argue somewhere else?â Jason looks hurt, and he finally gets to what Salim has been expecting, âYou left me.â
Salim is too frustrated; he needs Jason to understand why they canât be together. âI had to do it because I love you!â
âThatâs bullshit! If you really loved me, youâd have stayed regardless and we would have weathered this storm together!â
âThatâs the point Jason! You canât weather this storm. It will destroy you!â
Jason looks down to himself in an expression that says - clearly not! âWell, let it fucking try!!â
Salim almost rolls his eyes: in his own defence, he didnât know Jason wasnât a normal human. He is more mythical than he is an entity, though. Human enough.
Salim calms himself, and bites his lips together, looking to the floor. He is truly apologetic. ââŚIâm sorry. If Iâd have done this properly, you would have made me stay.â
Jason opens his mouth; he doesnât know if he should argue or not. He knows he definitely would have fought a true break up, but Salim shakes his head to keep him silent.
âNot through your words. Just because I couldnât have gone through with it.â His voice is soft, âI will drop you anywhere you want. With your friends⌠anywhere. But I cannot put you in danger, Jason. I love you too much for that. To subject you to a life like thisâŚÂ Everywhere you go.â
Jason steps forward, his eyes are brown again, but they shine beautifully. No matter what has passed between them, Jason wears a look of adoration. âWhatever you are, whatever you herald. I donât care. But I do care about you.â He runs his fingers over Salimâs jaw and through into his hair. Because hell he wants so badly to touch him â it feels like itâs been lifetimes. For a moment those weather pattern eyes return, the mask slips again, but this time Jason also sees twists of black and white stippling that run down Salimâs neck into his clothing.
âI would choose you and this every time.â
Salim swallows. âYou canât.â
âAnd you canât stop me. You came back, didnât you? Because why? Because of me, right?â Jason doesnât hope, he knows.
Salimâs cheeks darken and he looks away, âYou had to be safeâŚâ
âThen keep me safe. But please,â Jason pulls himself into Salimâs arms, âkeep me with you.â
âJason.â Salimâs voice is tender; he can feel that unnatural warmth again. âIf you come with me, you can never settleâŚâ
Jason shrugs, âNot sure I was ever the settlinâ type. I mean, look what happened when IÂ did.â
Salim almost laughs, but the sirens are still ever closer, âWe need to go, Habibi.â
Jason shivers at a nickname heâs died to hear.
Maybe they would find somewhere to settle, it would just have to be the right location. Perhaps somewhere in the world, people would understand whatever they wereâŚ
Hell, Jason realises, he now has to figure that out about himself. Salim is now driving, the opposite direction to the one the sirens are heading from. He looks human again now, but Jason knows what he saw â what Salim just explained to him.
He smiles a little â if anyone was going to be able to help him understand, it would be Salim. He reaches across the console, tentatively lacing their fingers together. Salim squeezes his hand: smiling at the contact even when his eyes are on the road.
Whatever kind of entity Salim was, Jason would learn about â he vowed. Theyâd figure out a way to make this work. This entity was his now.
And Jason was never letting Salim let him go again.

Midnight Blue XXVIII: Heart Race
Findable on AO3 here!
Authors Note: Well, if I had a 'Magnum Opus' to my 'Magnum Opus' this could be it. It could also be because I'm incredibly heavily bias... but this is probably my absolute favourite fic in this series.
I've wanted to write a racing AU for ages and I finally got around to doing it with these two! @oblivious-troll has drawn some INCREDIBLE art for this AU and I really would appreciate you all giving it some love! đđ Heart Race Fan Art 1 || Heart Race Art 2 Translations: Yalla - Lets Go! Najmi - My Star (It's not really used in Arabic, but for the purposes of this fic and the way Salim describes Jason, it fit)
Disclaimer: World Endurance Championship!AU (They are racing cars, but there's not a lot of technical racing jargon in it) / Lots of race teams mentioned but the only IRL person name checked is 'Kevin Estre'
Warnings: Swearing / sexual suggestion / drinking / a lot of crashes mentioned (but not too graphically)
Premise:
âŚCaught between a team he loves and a man he shouldnâtâŚ
Jason is the fastest man on the grid; heâs also got an ego the size of his home state, and a defensive attitude. Aggressive on track and off it, he provides the perfect foil for Salimâs steadiness and control. Providing the ideal backdrop for Cadillac and Yalla Speedâs fierce on track battles.
This year, however, Salim has two young teammates â including his son. And Jasonâs attitude is not going to fly.
While trying to shoulder criticism from both the grid and the press, Salim must also tackle the rising tension between himself and his American rival(s).
Only Jason seems to want something else⌠Salim just isnât sure how heâs supposed to figure out what.

I don't know what you saw in me Through your phone across this dead-end city And who am I to steal the night from someone so pretty? I'm caught up in the dichotomy OfâwhatâIâwant and whatâit's supposed toâbe Said it won't matter when you're holding me
Sweet like you, lingers all night Can't see straight, can't say I mind S'il vous plaĂŽt, then it's on sight I-I want you Please don't lie, is that how you feel? Say you might, maybe I will Put both hands over the wheel And start
Taking my heart on the road There's no other cars on the street Straight to your door like before And under your mat is a key Said, "I'll leave it outside As long as it needs to be As long as it leads to me"
---
Jason thinks his heart is beating as fast as the car is driving. Heâs watching the screen with his teeth sinking further and further into his bottom lip, arms folded. He shifts his weight from foot to foot.
This is going to be a tense finish.
Out in front is the Yalla Speed (ŮŮا سبŮŘŻ) car. This in itself is unprecedented. Small and independent â theyâve punched above their weight for seasons. They need this win. But thereâs been panicked radio chatter for a few laps now about losses of power. The Porsche and Ferrari behind have sensed this; for a while they were battling between themselves but the Porsche has won out â Kevin Estre working his magic as usual â and now itâs hunting down the smaller team.
If something happens to the Yalla car, then Nick is in fourth place. Which means Jasonâs team gets the podium spot. The championship is a done deal; this is the second to last race, but to celebrate that on the podium?
He shakes his head; Salim is in that lead car. âHold on⌠come on, just a couple more laps! You got this!â Jason wants to celebrate this win much more than he does his own team getting a scrappy podium.
The gap keeps closing, but that car is in maybe the steadiest pair of hands on the grid. Salim doesnât crack under pressure like this despite the fact that this is the most pressure heâs probably faced in his career. As they cross the line, the timer reads that there are less than two minutes to go. This will be the final lap; and the gap is sliced again; the Porsche is a few car lengths back if that.
âCome on!â Jason says out loud through gritted teeth. The car can die on the finish line for all he cares; they are ALMOST there.
The gap ticks up and Jasonâs eyebrow raises, Salim must have the same thought; heâs pushing that car to its limit.
Half way around the lap Jason abandons his position in the back of the garage and runs across the pit lane to the Cadillac pit wall. âIs he gonna fucking do it?!â Eric King swivels in his chair, âLooks that way. Couple of corners to go⌠Donât think weâre getting that podium Jason.â âShit!â Jason pulls back and steps out up to the catch fencing, he looks across to the Yalla Speed pit wall. Dar Basri, their team principal, is probably feeling exactly the same way Jason is right now. He also looks across and they catch each otherâs eye. Jason gives him a nod, which is returned. He takes a deep breath and then pulls himself up onto the concrete, without leaning too far over the track he listens for the car engines. Theyâre almost there.
The Yalla team are suddenly yelling, sprinting from their own garage they bundle themselves across the pit lane and scramble up onto the pit wall in much the same way Jason had. And when they all start leaning out, so does he. Jason notices heâs not the only one, this victory is unprecedented. Everyone up and down the paddock wants to witness this. This is a real fairytale moment. He feels a presence right beside him as someone touches his waist. Jason turns to come face to face with Zain Othman, grinning ear to ear. âJason, heâs going to do it!â âDamn fuckinâ right he is!â Jason grins back, steadying Zain as he leans out to celebrate his father â and teammate â crossing the line.
Salimâs car rounds the final corner first; the Porsche wonât catch him now. Jason doesnât even need to see it a few meters back still to know that, even though it moves out in a visual attempt at a last-ditch pass.
Suddenly all there is around Jason is screaming as the chequered flag waves and Salim crossed the line. And then heâs yelling too, although it looks a lot more like heâs cheering Nick across the line in fourth by that point.
Itâs appearances; and Jason knows he needs to keep those up. Zain has left to celebrate with his team already. Jason jumps down from the wall to watch them; observing the number of camera crews and reporters run over to film this, heâs grinning from ear to ear. The stark contrast from last season is astounding. Behind him, the Cadillac team are watching too, while also celebrating themselves. Their car crossing in 4th had locked everyone else out of both championships; theyâd won.
Zain sprints back over, âJason!!! Jason câmon!â He grabs Jasonâs hand, pulling him towards the celebrations. âNo, no! Zain! Zain, go!â He grins and pushes Zain back, âGo celebrate, this is for your team.â âYou just won the championship!â âAnd you just won the race! Thatâs history kiddo!â Jason winks, âNow go! You got a podium to get to! Hurry!!â
Zain doesnât immediately step back, instead he grabs Jason into a hug, before sprinting away.
The pitlane clears, as the winning carâs engine sounds, and Salim drives it very carefully towards the podium staging. Heâs got one door open, checkered flag propped up and streaming behind. As he passes Jasonâs position on the pit wall, he winks. Jason reciprocates, waving him on with congratulations and then watches as the Yalla team almost pile onto the car as it stops momentarily in front of its own garage. The officials have to break it up to move the car on as quickly as possible.
Jason watches the commotion and shakes his head, turning back to his own team, he hops down from the pit wall, immediately mingling with the mechanics and pulling them all into hugs. Theyâve all worked so hard this year; they deserve it. The pit lane clears once more as the sleek blue Cadillac revs its engine. Sheâd given them everything this year. That last race was going to be quite something, but at least everyone could breathe easier and just have fun with it now. Merwin joins Jason on the pit wall and as Nick passes â also with his door open â the two of them lean out to give him a high five. Nick has to park her up at scrutineering but heâs soon sprinting back and amongst the celebrations too. The Cadillac Racing team are all patting him on the back for being the one to cross the line to clinch it. When Jason gets to him, they embrace, before Nick looks at him expectantly.
âWhat!?â
Nick raises an eyebrow before his eyes look down the pit lane towards the podium celebrations; in the background, above the noise of his own team, Jason can just about hear the interviews; âSo, are you going to watch their podium or not!?â
Jasonâs eyes flick behind him but he stops himself turning, âHuh!?â
Nick sighs, pushing him, âJust GO JasonâŚ!â
Thereâs another few beats of silence, but as Nick keeps staring at him, Jason simply grins, giving him an appreciative wave, he sprints after the Iraqi outfit.
These were certainly celebrations that he would never forgive himself for missing.
***
It hadnât always been like this. Salim and Jason had been constantly competitive. For the most part respectfully, but not always. They had different racing styles: Salim had been in the sport longer and he was steady and consistent, reliable. Jason was by no means new, but he was young: fastest man on the grid but with an aggressive racing streak that not everyone liked.
It was earlier in the previous season that things had really started heating up between themâŚ
âJASON!!!â Cameraâs flash but he keeps walking, team cap pulled low over his eyes he keeps them on the ground. âJason! A comment!?â He walks a little faster, causing Cadillacâs PR manager â Clarice â to struggle to keep up. âGeez, you gonna talk to any of them?â He shakes his head, âI put it on pole what the hell else do they need to know?â âJason⌠you-â âIt was hard racing, he was in my way! If theyâve got a problem with it, they can whine about it in their articles.â ââŚYou really going to let your driving do the talking!?â âAlways!â âIf youâre penalized the car will start from last place!â âNick and Merwin can handle it. Weâll all pull our weight.â He stops and gives her a sharp look, âIâm going to the stewards.â âBecause youâve been summoned.â She thinks. âItâs by force, not choice. You not going begging them to hear you outâŚâ She sighs, âJust donât do anything stupid.â He nods, but she knows he will.
Jason argues his case and gets told to wait for the verdict, but as he leaves the stewards room and rounds the corner, he finds himself grabbed roughly and shoved up against the wall.
âWhat the fuck?!â
Salim is an extraordinarily patient man with all of Jasonâs bullshit on and off track. Theyâve had little back and forths in press conferences before. And his team, Yalla Speed Motorsport, are healthy rivals with Cadillac Racing â the team Jason drivers for. Salim brushes it off and almost always walks away the bigger person because he knows just how to push Jasonâs buttons. Despite Jasonâs level of ego, he does play well with others⌠when the others are his two teammates in the same car. The others on track, less so.
Salimâs new teammates are young and inexperienced. Hypercar is a tough field, and they must learn fast, thatâs true. But they shouldnât have to learn through other peopleâs tempers and bad manners.
Today Jason has pushed Salimâs buttons. Heâd picked the wrong car to mess with on that qualifying lap.
âWhat the hell was that!? You put me in the wall!â
Shaking off the initial shock, Jason narrows his eyes. He only needs to explain himself to the stewards â maybe his team - not a fellow driver. âYou were too slow, man, just get out of the way next time.â
He pushes Salimâs hand from his shoulder but the older manâs look just becomes more intense; dare he say angry? Salim doesnât really get angry.
âThat could have been my son.â
Jason sighs, sending his eyes skyward, âWell, it wasnât, it was you.â Jasonâs gaze settles back on Salim and he takes a step forward into his space. âItâs qualifying. Iâd have done the same if he slowed me down.â
Having had enough of Jason altogether, Salim wastes no time grabbing the collar of Jasonâs race suit, voice disturbingly calm in his rage. âYou do that, Iâll put you in the wall myself.â
The American merely blinks in response; but he knew that was a promise. Jasonâs eyes travel to the side, thereâs no one around right now, but theyâre still in the paddock, if anyone turns down this passageâŚ
He smirks, âYou really want to do this here?â
Salim curses, letting him go and shoving Jason away. As far as heâs concerned Jason being disqualified wouldnât be enough. But it would be unfair on his teammates. Nick in particular is very amicable; Salim gets on with him very well.
Jason is hard work. Salim has tried to get in his head and understand him nearly every season since his debut. Heâs always been fast; when he turned up on the grid Salim couldnât help but be impressed.
He started with Corvette customer team âRevelation Racingâ. An appropriate name, because a revelation Jason sure was. He was a scrappy kid with a chip on his shoulder, and most of the grid dismissed him in the same way they were dismissing Salimâs teammates right now. He didnât have a karting background; heâd barely scraped his way through the junior racing categories that he had been able to do with his familyâs money, and everyone joked that heâd be better returning to the US and NASCAR. But Jason had a habit of enjoying proving people wrong â everyone was unsure about him. Called him a Wild Card. Scoffed about Corvette taking this chance: he was barely racing full-time in IMSA at this stage. But he was fucking quick. Proving that he should be a star in the WEC despite his background. Corvette moved him to the factory team within a season. It was no wonder at all that Cadillac had wanted him so badly for their Hypercar program, and it was no wonder he was their âAceâ driver. Their star.
Jason is by far the quickest on the grid now heâs reaching his peak performance. Everyoneâs faith in him has been validated â but he still drives sometimes like he a kid with something to prove. He compliments Nickâs steady hand. Merwin is the one pulling the crazy overtakes but Jason can match that aggression too. Heâs a menace to every other car on the grid: if heâs going you get out of his way. (If you can even manage to find yourself in front of him in the first place.) Heâs cocky, heâs got an ego that rivals the size of his home state â but heâs an exceptionally good team player. Heâs funny, and heâs friendly and heâs loyal. Salim has watched him defend his teammates in the media and against other drivers. Sometimes physically.
Salim had still been a little too on the racing line when Jason had come flying through that particular set of corners on his qualifying lap. That was a lapse of judgement on his part. If it was any other car but Jason, Salim would be apologising for impeding right now. Jason wouldnât settle for that. Instead he came at speed; and it was up to Salim to get out of the way â unfortunately at the narrowest part of the circuit. To avoid contact, Salim had to force the right side of his own car into the wall. It has caused bodywork damage on both sides as the Cadillac had still just barely missed. And it had ruined Salimâs chances at a final lap for his team.
He'd observed that half of his cars paintwork was also streaked through the blue of the Cadillacâs own right hand side too.
Salim didnât expect Jason to apologise; but if Zain had been in the car, Salim isnât sure he would have reacted fast enough. And at the very least heâd be met with exactly what Jason thought about that verbally⌠if not one hell of a bad crash. Honestly, he doesnât know why he expected Jason to listen to that eitherâŚ
What he does know right now, is his team have work to do tomorrow.
He narrows his eyes, voice still level in rage. âStay away from my son.â
Jason watches him go, shrugging his race suit back into place. He doesnât mean to observe Salim for as long as he does but he canât help it. There was something about the way Salim got angry without yelling at him thatâŚ
Jason isnât sure if he was exhilarated orâŚ
He shakes his head quickly as heat starts spreading up his neck, but he doesnât stop staring at Salim until his view becomes blocked by the paddock crowding. Jason turns and heads back to the Cadillac garage, scratching the back of his head and clearing his throat.
Time to find out if heâd been allowed to keep that pole.
***
Jason canât lie; he doesnât think heâs ever seen so much press buzz and media attention around the WEC paddock before. The upgrades to the Hypercar classes in recent years had caused renewed interest but thereâs something a little insane about what heâs witnessing now.
He thought it might just go away after a few rounds â testing and the first race even - but now it was still bad.
Jason didnât mind attention. He liked attention even. He liked reading about himself when the press were being nice. And these days he had the success enough that the press had to be complementary of his achievements even if not his reputation. And the US press were of course, heavily bias.
But this wasnât good press. This was press that smelled blood and wanted more of it.
Something about Salim getting physical with him just that once had unsettled something inside him. He was starting to pay way more attention to the pressure Salim was under. That these kids were under.
They were both still teenagers. They didnât have a straightforward path into the WEC â how could they, given where theyâd grown up? And now theyâre in Hypercar â some press might even say undeservingly. But Yalla had pulled them out of GT kicking and screaming and expected them to be able to take this.
This.
Jason, Nick and Merwin have just done their media duties for the day, and some ridiculous stuff for marketing. Merwin has taken the time to himself, glad of the peace.
Jason and Nick have been chilling together in the paddock discussing free practice runs. Itâs only half-hearted though and it breaks off into idle chatter.
Until they hear a clamour of voices â which they canât help but turn towards. THIS is what the press canât let go of.
Zain and Tariq are forced to walk backwards to not turn their backs on the group of journalists following them. Their PR representative tries their best to keep the press and the boys apart but there is only one of her.
The Iraqiâs are clearly trying to be polite, but this must be bordering on harassment at this stage.
And Jason can hear it. All the words the press used to say about him. âtoo youngâ âinexperiencedâ âdangerousââŚ
Salim has made it hard to ignore, but itâs so easy to scoff at written words and not take it seriously when they arenât written about him. But now heâs hearing it â ignoring it has become impossible.
Heâs lived this before. He knew how it played on his mind. How he spent a whole season angry and eager to prove everyone wrong. Jason had done it, but to what cost?
The detriment of his reputation. The way he acted around fellow racers even now.
Who is going to defend two kids from Iraq who are in a position they probably donât even want to be in in the first place?
Who on this damn grid wants to end up like Jason?
Theyâre kids they shouldnât have to listen to this bullshit to their faces. When did the press get so damn bold.
He stands, and Nick follows suit. Clearly he has the same idea.
âShould we do something?â Nick asks, before they move.
He looks across to Jason, who, despite standing is suddenly frozen. âStay away from my son!â reverberates in his head, and it stops his feet from moving.
But Salim would understand right? How can Jason possibly leave this alone. How can he turn away, no matter what Zainâs father says?
Nick too, hesitates, looking like heâs about to prompt Jason again before he takes a breath and gives a firm nod. Salimâs words be damned. If there are consequences, Jason will face them.
âYeah.â
Nick canât say thatâs what he expects, initially wondering if Jason is instead getting up to get away from the noise â a cue to leave. Itâs more likely for Jason to scoff: âTheyâre kids in the WEC they need to suck it up!â Because thatâs what he did, right? And Jason never acted like that was hard.
The look on Jasonâs face is fierce though â this gaggle of reporters has clearly triggered something within him.
Jason times it perfect to walk off their stand and get between the group of press and the three Yalla Speed crew members. âHey! Hey! Back off! Back up! Theyâve answered all your questions in media, now come on! Kids are probably exhausted!â Jason spreads his arms as wide as they will go. Trying his best to halt the onslaught. Heâs got a loud voice, so the journalists quiet down immediately.
He's already done better than their Press Officer trying to tell them âThatâs all for today!â But that isnât the point, the press should be listening.
The journalists, as expected, turn to him, âJason! What do you think of their inclusion in the Hypercar field? Should âkidsâ be in the top class of Endurance?â
Jason has every right to look disgusted, hating that he just gave them that ammunition for free, âOh, you think Iâm about to answer your questions, when you disrespect them telling you thatâs all theyâre answering? Theyâre on the grid, arenât they? You all saw âem in the GTs.â He takes a step forward, and the press step back.
As far as heâs concerned Zain and Tariq are good drivers, theyâve won in the GT class. Hypercars are not the same. They need the time no one is giving them to settle. âWhat do you think this is, F1? Let their driving do their talking. Weâre not doing this, not in this paddock. Weâre not becoming that kind of sport! Okay? Are we good?â
There are a few beats of silence where the Yalla Press Officer just stares at him. And he can see the group of press in front of him shift and start murmuring questions again.
âHey! She already told you theyâre done! So theyâre done!â Jason narrows his eyes, âCâmon guys, you know better than this.â
He can imagine his name is about to be splashed about for being rude to the press. Another mess Clarice will love to deal with but he thinks heâs being fair here, even if direct and snappy. The kids have probably been media trained to within an inch of their lives, but it only takes a group of adults like this chasing them down - in what should be a safe quiet space for them - for one of them to snap and say something they shouldnât. Or do something. Out of anger or fear.
And then who defends them? Salim? Of course. The Iraqi press? Perhaps, but who is reading that, even if it is translated itâs going to get buried by any other Western motorsport journalist or content creator out there.
Jason wonders where Salim is currently: he must otherwise be occupied because Jason canât think of any other reason heâd let these two wander around alone, even if he trusts their press officer. That makes this even worse. Because the steady adult isnât in the room the journalists think they are entitled to this?
Nick, who is clearly worried about what heâs unleashed here, or what Jasonâs next move will be if the gathering doesnât listen to him, joins Jason from Cadillacâs motorhome, also spreading his arms out to push the press back. âCome on, ladies and gentleman, let the Yalla boys get back to their motorhome, theyâve got enough to think about without answering your stupid questions.â
Jason raises an eyebrow at his best friend, guess now theyâd both be in trouble with Clarice.
Nick does his best to shuffle them on, politely thanking them even though Jason thinks itâs the last thing they deserve. He turns back to Zain, Tariq and their press officer.
âShit, you guys okay?â
Zain and Tariq look past him to watch the press dissipate. Wondering to themselves how the hell the two Cadillac drivers had just done that like it was easy.
âYes, thanks Jason.â Though Zainâs voice is thin and he sounds less than convinced of what heâs saying.
Jason walks forward, âYou need any help with those guys when Salim ainât around, you let me know. You keep doing what youâre doing. Youâll prove them wrong without words.â
Heâd know.
Except Jason did use words.
These two would be much more sensible not to â and he doubts Salim would condone that type of behaviour either.
They both remain quiet, although given the expressions on their faces they want to believe what heâs saying is true. Want to hope that it will come to fruition.
Jason nods back behind them, seeing the Yalla motorhome in the distance. âGo on, get back to some real peace and quiet.â Then he turns to Zain, âIâm sure your dad is waiting for ya.â
Their press officer touches Jasonâs arm lightly to thank him and Jason just gives a short nod; watching Tariq and her need no more convincing that they should get back to the safety of the motorhome as soon as possible.
Zain on the other hand lingers a little longer, making Jason turn to him curiously.
âReally, I mean itâŚâ Zain begins, âthank you.â
âNothinâ your dad wouldnât have done. Maybe if we all looked out for ya this wouldnât be happening in the first place.â
Jason knew he could have used other teams backing him up in the past. Sometimes he wasnât even sure his old teammates were happy to support someone who was as abrasive as Jason. But they stuck by him regardless.
Zain almost laughs, and when he also touches Jasonâs arm, Jason reciprocates with a small smile, âSee ya on track tomorrow. Ignore those idiots. I did, look how I turned out.â
Then he laughs a little more, âActually on second thought your dad wouldnât want you to end up like me, forget I said that!â
Zain smiles again, grateful, before letting Jasonâs arm go and jogging after his friend up the paddock.
Jason watches them go with a long exhale; Now that Jason had fully witnessed these kids being treated like him, how can he possibly ignore it ever again?
***
The rivalry between the two teams continues on and off track. Itâs supposed to be fun banter; but something about this season is causing friction at every turn.
Salim isnât tolerating anything from the Americans; Jason is sure itâs because his son has joined him in Hypercar this year. After the press tirade in the paddock heâd witnessed, Jason doesnât blame him. Zain has raced GTs before, but this is something different. The press has already raised enough questions of its own if someone so young should be racing such a car. Though that seems to have mercifully quietened down now; at least to the kidsâ faces. Jason doesnât dare take credit. Salim canât protect Zain from everything, so heâll protect Zain from what he can, and that mostly falls on the rest of the grid.
Jason thinks they are targeting Zain simply because his father is on the same team. He hadnât seen raised eyebrows previously, and they donât bother Tariq (who is just as young) half as much. Salim isnât getting any younger, and apparently this is the year heâs been tasked with raising up the next generation of this team.
Jason can also understand why the grid is coming down on these boys. Theyâre kids in the top tier of the WEC. Theyâre young and inexperienced and prone to mistakes. They needed a few more years with the GTs but Yalla was determined to drag them up. That wasnât Salimâs fault either, but he was bearing the weight of it. When it worked, it worked. When it didnât he was shielding two teenagers from the worst of the press. Jasonâs on track attitude towards him wasnât helping anything.
Neither was the fact that the friendly banter was becoming antagonistic between the two teams. Mostly coming from the Cadillac side of things.
This had been something stemming from the GT era, although Elibriea had never been a purely Iraqi outfit when they were racing Corvette and with no Iraqi drivers left, they were even less so now.
But this was Iraq vs America in Hypercar. This was the pinnacle of Endurance racing. But it was also the tiny independent team vs an automotive powerhouse.
It meant their rivalry wasnât always friendly, both between fans and drivers.
Jason had been at the front of those jibes as much as anyone else â but to actually read what the media was saying⌠he canât imagine the stress himself, and he couldnât blame Salim for cracking under that pressure. Jason had started keeping some of his thoughts to himself.
He also couldnât stop thinking about what heâs watched when the press had been hounding the kids in the paddock. Jason had never seen anything like that. He didnât want to see it again.
Hence why when Merwin and Joey â who was Cadillacâs test and reserve driver â barged through the group of Yalla drivers talking quietly, laughing loudly and making their ever tasteless jokes, Jason was glad he was nearby.
The kids both immediately give them the kind of judgemental looks Jason expected teenagers to give people they donât like. But Salim was not about to stop at just that: heâd had it with rude Americans. Jason is talking to Eric, leaning against their motorhome at the time, but the second he sees Salim start to move Jason is darting across the paddock.
âWoah! Woah!â Jason places his arm across Salim, âItâs not worth it!â Salim isnât going to let a physical barrier stop him, âYou want to say that again!?â He pulls against Jason and the smaller man finds himself dragged a couple of paces.
Merwin and Joey turn around. Joey looks apologetic - Merwin on the other hand. âWhat, canât take a joke now?â Salim strains against Jason again and Jason finds himself leaning his full weight the opposite direction just to keep him in place, he grunts with the effort, âCâmon SalimâŚâ âI said, do you want to say that again?â Merwin opens his mouth but Jason is the one to shoot him a look now, âShut up! Another word out of your mouth and youâre gonna deal with me!â Jason might let Merwin say something to the whole Yalla team. Particularly their Team Principal who Jason thought was a bit of an asshole. Maybe even Salim, who seemed to have a habit of being abrasive to Jason in particular this season. But involving Zain and Tariq in this? It was something he couldnât let go of anymore. âOh, so now you need the Americans to save you⌠again?â Jason knew he wouldnât be able to hold Salim back this time, so he lets the Iraqi go and steps between them, furious at his teammate. âMERWIN, KNOCK IT THE FUCK OFF!â Jasonâs look meant it, and Merwin closes his mouth. For a few seconds there is silence, and Joey tries to pull him back towards the trucks, âCâmon manâŚâ Eric also moves across the space to cover him, hands out to still anyone else who is thinking of moving to follow. Jason isnât known for yelling at his own team like that. Raising his voice, sure, but not like this. To regain his composure after being a little stunned Merwin rolls his eyes and then his neck. Brushing both Eric and Joey off he walks back towards the truck to leave Jason glaring after him.
Behind them Jason hears Zain run over to his father, the two conversing in Arabic as Jason watches Eric and Joey also leave. That was his cue to go too. If Merwin was lucky Jason wouldnât see him again for a while. Otherwise heâd probably find himself shoved against the wall like Salim had done to him at the beginning of the seasonâŚ
Heat spreads to Jasonâs cheeks and he shakes his head to dissipate it again, turning back to the Yalla boys. By now Tariq has joined them and the three are talking in a huddle in hushed Arabic again. When they notice Jason staring at them they fall into silence, each one staring back at him in turn.
Jason avoids Salimâs eyes the most, âIâm sorry about that. He shouldnât have said it. Either thing, really.â Salimâs eyes narrow, before his eyebrow raises, âWhat did you just say!?â thereâs an edge to it, and Jason isnât entirely sure how to respond. âIâm⌠sorry?â Salimâs eyes seem to widen slightly, and for a heartbeat he struggles with his response, before his mouth presses into a hard line again and he makes that physical step between Jason and the kids. âWeâre fine.â âSalim, I-â âWeâre. Fine.â Each word punctures the air with finality. Zain and Tariq look to each other and then to Salim before their eyes return to Jason but itâs very clear neither of them will be talking to him either.
Jason puts his hands up, âOkay⌠Iâll deal with it.â He wants to say heâs sorry again, but itâs clear thatâs the last thing Salim wants to hear. Especially from him. And Jason understands that. But Cadillac, and his teammates, are his responsibility⌠and heâs accountable for whenever they cross the line with someone else.
Salim watches Jason walk in the same direction as the rest of his team, before he disappears from view. He hopes Jason gives them hell. The expression on his face previously had certainly indicated he would. â[Dad, he-]â Salim holds his hand up and Zain becomes quiet again.
This was strange. Jason didnât apologise for anything. It was more than likely in a situation like that, at any point previously, heâd have tried to tell Salim to calm down and that it was just a joke. So why was today different? Hadnât Jason done the exact same thing to them, on track, and within this season. In fact, it was more than likely Jason would do it again. It didnât make any sense. Salim thinks back to the first qualifying session of the year. Jason was just as aggressive and cocky off track as on it when that occurred⌠It was highly suspicious for him not to join in with antagonising their group â let alone shouting his own team down. Â
It put Salim on high alert. He paid much more attention to Jasonâs general attitude any time they were in each otherâs vicinity. Press, Paddock or otherwise. And on track he was hyper vigilant every time that blue Cadillac car was around them. As much as Salim was prepared to go wheel to wheel with them, he wasnât about to instruct the kids to do the same.
But because he was being so careful about Jason, Salim started to notice things he hadnât before. Like Jason sitting closer to them in driver briefings or press sessions, or hanging back after meetings to walk with or closer to them. He didnât always talk; and the few times Salim had questioned it Jason immediately went to a hostile response in defence. No! he wasnât waiting for them, No! it just happened that way, No! that was the only spare seat. He wondered if Jason thought he was that stupid? That he would fall for it at all.
Salim started to discover that if he tried to have a gentle conversation with Jason instead the American would be receptive to it â even if it was so much as passing comment on the meeting, the track condition, or how the Balance of Performance was screwing them over this week. But the minute he pushed for something more personal, for Jason to fully admit that he had to have been waiting for them that time. Jason would throw that wall straight back up, hit him with a hard stare and fervently deny it.
Salim was too intrigued with trying to find a chink in the armour to stop pushing at it. But he didnât appreciate Jasonâs aggressive rebuttal; and he was still suspicious of why exactly Jason had decided to start subtly hanging back for them. Constantly putting his body between the American and Zain & Tariq. Who were probably none the wiser.
Jasonâs own issues lie in feelings he shouldnât be feeling. Despite his outward attitude, heâs always had respect for the drivers who have been on the grid for as long as Salim has. But that respect has started turning to something more than that. Jason isnât good at dealing with his feelings normally, but what heâs starting to feel towards Salim now is making that antagonism worse. He wants to be closer as much as he wants to push it all away. But fighting it just seems to make it grow.
If heâs not careful heâs going to push Salim away entirely: he already knows that Salim doesnât trust them. Especially with his young team mates. Jasonâs constant switch between attitudes is both confusing and irritating, but the American canât help himself. And he definitely canât talk about it.
Sometimes he thinks Salim sees right through him. And sometimes he thinks Salim has no idea what his game plan is. (Heck, even Jason doesnât know.) Maybe itâs a bit of both.
Either way Jason knows he has to work through this. Thereâs a difference between knowing his animosity comes from not being able to deal with his feelings, versus asshole behaviour for the sake of being one.
Hell, if he gets the same reputation with Salim as Merwin had, heâd never forgive himself.
***
Hyperpole is always Jasonâs favourite part of the weekend. Itâs his forte. Being fast. Getting through into the top 10 of all the cars in class through qualifying is one thing. Battling it out with the fastest drivers to clinched pole? Thatâs not a high Jason can compare to anything. Driving endurance in stints that last hours is one thing. It tests everything about him as a driver and a person. But beating other fast drivers at their own game is priceless.
The team bundle him. Pole means nothing in the long run â not to a 6 hour race where anything could happen â but only one car gets to start from the front. Itâs worth celebrating; it counts towards the team pole tally. And more importantly itâs one extra point for their championship total. He pulls his helmet off to immediately replace it with his Cadillac Racing cap. Nick grabs him and shakes him and Jason is laughing, trying not to get roughed up too much by his teammates while adjusting his race suit. They still have pictures to take, and some ridiculous gold medal ceremony which Jason will laugh about later but absolutely lord up in the moment.
From the corner of his eye however, he spots Zain and Salim. Zain is sitting on the pit wall, head down â Salim is crouched in front of him no doubt trying to be an encouraging teammate and parent.
Jasonâs face falls slightly watching the interaction. Zain had probably pushed a little too hard in Hyperpole. But the crash was fast â probably incredibly scary. For a moment Jason wonders how hard it must be for Salim to be both to his son this season. Maybe Jason isnât thinking, but he pushes his team off him for a moment â and takes off.
They arenât far from the celebrations, so Jason can still hear his team calling him. But this is on impulse. âHey kid!!!â Zain and Salim startle slightly, both looking up in the direction Jason is running from. Salim immediately frowns, ready to push up and get between them but Jasonâs eyes are on Zain only. âYou okay? That looked like a big one.â Salim stills, but his eyes are still narrowed slightly in suspicion. Zainâs smile reveals just how shaken he is. Salim comforting had done something but heâs still a mess internally. âYeah⌠Iâm alright. Bigger for the car, the whole right side is buckled now⌠I swear the brakes just went. I donât know if theyâll be able to fix it.â Jason nods, flashing a smile he hopes will give Zain some confidence, âTheyâll fix it, the mechanics you have are great.â He tips his head, trying to assess Zainâs condition without overstepping. Especially with Salim still crouched there, âBut what matters is youâre okay. That was scaryâŚâ Zain nods back, reassuring, âIâm fine, medical cleared me. Just a bit shaken.â âThatâs good to hear,â Jason pats his shoulder and shakes him, stopping when he realises thatâs probably not the best idea. But he grins, âCanât wait to battle you out there tomorrow. You were damn fast today.â Zain opens his mouth; but heâs not sure how to counter. He isnât sure thatâs true from the look on his face â but he appreciates Jasonâs words all the same. The American is the fastest man in the field - him just saying that means so much. âThanks, Jason!â Jason inclines his head with a smile, his eyes flick to Salim â who is now standing, but still frowning. The question in his mind is obvious by his face. âWhat are you doing!?â Jason finds himself momentarily wishing he had a parent who would be so quick to defend him from anything and anyone⌠He has nothing more to say, and a team still yelling his name to get back to the pole ceremony. Jason gives Salim a small smile. Turning back to Zain, Jason pats and squeezes his shoulder once more. Smile once again of confidence, before he turns around and jogs back to where he came from.
Salim watches him go, puzzled. âThat actually did genuinely seem like he cared and like he wasnât just trying to save face.â
But what was the motiveâŚ
What the hell was Jason Kolchek up to?
***
By the time it gets into June, Salim thinks heâs got the American figured out. It doesnât matter how guarded he is, Jason canât keep some physical signs from happening; like the way pink will dust his cheeks if Salim is remotely nice to him for more than 5 minutes. And the staring - Jason canât keep his eyes to himself. Even if they are across the room from each other, now he will angle his body to make sure he can look at Salim every time he gets the opportunity. If Salim wasnât so patient heâd have called it out. But he also knew all he was going to get was Jasonâs temper in response, maybe flat-out denial. It hardly seemed worth the trouble to insinuate that Jason might not be having as much trouble with Salim himself as he was his feelingsâŚ
That might well have been to his own detriment though, because it made Salim even more cautious. Especially when it came to the kids.
Luckily June provided respite. The month of the 24-hour races would quickly lead into summer break when they wouldnât race at all. Salim could hope things would calm down. And after Le Mans was over, he wouldnât see Jason on the grid again until August. Given Spa and NĂźrburgring werenât even WEC races and Salim would only be competing in one of them.
He supposed he counted on that a little too early.
Nick looks like a man on a mission as he walks into the motorhome, making a beeline for Jason without even stopping to wave to anyone who has looked up from their morning coffee. Only one thing on his mind. Jasonâs head tilts; âLookinâ for me?â âMore than looking for you,â Nick bends a little lower, hands on the chair to the right of Jason, who is midway through breakfast himself. âYou want to do the Spa 24-hours right?â Jason is intrigued, eyes widening, âI love that track! Damn right â Iâve never got the opportunity though. And Corvette havenât asked this year either. I guess I shoulda asked Eric, like months ago.â Jason kicks himself. Heâd spent his GT career in Corvetteâs before moving into the Hypercar program, but somehow heâd always missed out on one of his favourite trackâs biggest races. âWell, I heard some teams talking about needing to find a third driver.â Jasonâs mouth opens in shock, âThe whole grid isnât filled!?â âApparently not, but Iâd get in quick if I were you before it is!â âWho?â Jason stands. Nick is almost taken aback by the fact heâs going to leave immediately. But thatâs Jasonâs impulsive side showing again. âNow⌠that bit you may not like. Itâs the Yalla bunch. Zain and Salim specifically. I guess some team wanted to back them, but Salimâs done them all before right?â Jason almost groans, tipping his head back, âThat wonât be an American model car either.â âNo. So itâs up to you how much you wanna beg.â Jasonâs head remains tipped back, but his eyes refocus on Nick. It wouldnât just be the Iraqiâs heâd be begging either. Eric, the board⌠hell, for this race Jason would do it. âFuck it.â Jason rushes down the paddock to the Yalla Speed building. Itâs to his luck that the Othmanâs are sitting on a table outside and he doesnât have to blag his way past their security. He very abruptly interrupts their Arabic conversation, slumping into the chair opposite them.
Salim looks like heâs about to yank Jason back out of the chair himself if it isnât vacated in 2 seconds and Zain looks the complete opposite. Jason doesnât give Salim the opportunity. âI hear youâre looking for a third driver for your 24 hours of Spa entry?â There is silence. Mostly because Salim is stunned that the American would have the audacity. Was he really so oblivious as to think that all his actions didnât have consequences? It didnât matter that Jason was attempting to play nice now â Salim had been on the grid with him far longer than heâd like to remember.
This is probably on Nick, and now Salim regrets talking about his Spa entry in passing to the friendly American.
His instant response is âNo.â He doesnât want Jason anywhere near them right now, let alone their car. The only reason Salim hesitates is when he looks over to Zain.
Zainâs eyes are practically sparkling and Salim knows why. This is the fastest driver in the WEC field asking to be his teammate in Spa. This is â unfortunately â almost Zainâs dream come true. Jason represents a good shot at pole and the win just by being in the car. Even if Salim wants to refuse, and has concerns about Jason gelling with them at all, he knows whoever else they ask wonât match Jasonâs speed. At least who hasnât already been snapped up by another car. Salim sighs heavily, âWell, we donât knowâŚâ
ââŚWhat the team will say?â Jason finishes, prepared to audition himself in any way he needs to, âIâve got track experience. Iâve got pole in Spa before in Hypercar and the GTs. Iâve got a decent CV there. Itâs one of my favourite tracks of all timeâŚÂ what can be done to persuade them?â He blinks and those brown eyes suddenly look desperate, âIâll do anything.â And itâs sincere.
Salim folds his arms; he has to admit, he likes this power dynamic. Jason is completely at their mercy. He wants nothing more than to give Jason a taste of his own medicine. But it wonât be his decision; it will be the teams. Salim knows he wouldnât be able to say âyesâ without their approval. âJason, we-â But before he can calmly explain this, Zain turns back to him, speaking in Arabic. â[Dad, please?!]â Salim turns his hard stare on his son, and heâs able to hold it for a while. But before long Zainâs look is also pleading him too, and Salim canât remain that stubborn for long.
He sighs, âWe canât say yes. We can simply see what the team says. But weâll let them know youâre interested.â  Jason looks between them in understanding: thatâs where the actual dynamic lies. He gives a nod, âWell, I appreciate it.â Salim is still determined it wonât happen â heâll let the team know his concern. Jasonâs intrigue is directed elsewhere: âWhat car is it?â âWe arenât-â Salim begins but Zain cuts across him excitedly. âItâs a Lamborghini!!â Jasonâs mouth makes an âOhâ shape before he laughs nervously. Salim gets suddenly hopeful. Jason is contracted to an American team. âCan you even drive that?â Jason gives a shrug but scratches the back of his head. Salim thinks his answer is actually trying to make sure Zain isnât disappointed: â⌠I mean Iâm sure I can be persuasive.â Salimâs squint makes Jason sure in no uncertain terms which way his flat sarcasm goes, âWell, that makes two of us.â
Jason is hounding Eric King, Cadillacâs Team Principal, almost the second he leaves the Othmanâs â who he now presumes will have a father/son argument about him that heâd rather not stick around for.
Eric â predictably â almost has a fit. âJason you canât go and do these things without asking first!â âWell maybe next time ask Cadillac if theyâll talk to a Corvette team for me! Iâve never done this Eric, you know itâs a dream of mine!â âDid you even think about what this is going to look like?â âAnd when I win itâll be a standout moment.â Heâs not dumb, Cadillac and Corvette will love that press. âJason!â Ericâs expression is asking not to be tested. âPlease! Eric, Iâll talk to them myself!â âYou most certainly will not! Itâs one thing that itâs an Italian car; you couldnât find another team?!â ââŚIt was the only one Nick mentioned!â Ericâs eyes dart skyward; of course they would both choose to be a pain in his ass⌠âNo promises.â âEric please! Itâs the one race I really want to do, you gotta let me!â âItâs not up to me Jason and honestly if it was, I donât think youâd listen!â That makes Jason go quiet for a moment. But only a moment. âPlease! Iâll beg, in the meeting with you if I have to. I⌠please get me into that race?â âIf they say no they say no Jason, and I canât change that.â Jason lowers his eyes to the floor, almost resigned to defeat, âTo be honest, they need to approve me on the team too. And I donât know if Salim is going to want to do that himself.â Eric isnât surprised, but heâs not going to tell his fastest driver that on a race weekend. âOkay, well then if you get approved by both you go. Just make sure your sponsors get a look in Jason; theyâre the only people you gotta keep happy.â âYessir!â And, despite the circumstances, Jason is beaming.
***
Salim has to begrudgingly accept that Jason is part of their Spa 24hr squad. He canât say heâs surprised that the minute Almasir Racing hear that the Jason Kolchek wants to join up they jump at the chance. Heâs a little surprised Cadillac are letting him come to drive a Lamborghini⌠but he supposes if they think they need to keep their top driver happy mid-season, what choice do they have?
Given his late addition to the team, Jason has to pick up his race suit at the track. Heâs picked an all blue-tone helmet for this weekend â there is no stars and stripes in sight, but it nicely mirrors one of his old GT ones. So Jason thinks itâll be a nice throwback for his fans.
The race suit is mostly white; with gradients of black and red up the leg and arm panels. Arabic script for the team name displayed prominently across his chest; it seems to stand in stark contrast to Jasonâs personal American sponsors, stuck on as last-minute additions. Jason sighs and asks what colour the car is. âWhite, black and red!â The engineer who is showing him around the garage answers enthusiastically and Jason laughs. Yeah, of course! He is shown to the car, shiny and new, sitting in her garage bay. He bites the corner of his mouth but canât suppress his smile or excitement. âSheâs beautiful.â And she is, looking dynamic and sleek in her Italian design; Jason knows the sound. She will most definitely roar⌠He rounds her. Although the car is mostly in white: with black and red pouring up from the hood, over the roof and down to the wing, along each side is a wave of blue; like a lightning bolt. It looks like itâs been hastily added on, but the gradient goes from black, through the blue tones to an almost white-blue to try and keep in line with the rest of the car. âYou didnât say she was blueâŚ?â He questions. The engineer smiles, âOh, she wasnât. They added the blue for you.â Jason isnât quite sure what to say, so he says nothing at all.
He walks around to the front of the car, studying her. Here the red, white and black is sectioned, a sweep of Iraqi flag colours that are stylised: looking as if the paint had been thrown over the front of the car and then wiped upward with a piece of rigid plastic.
Jason shakes his head, musing to himself, âMy sponsors are gonna love this.â A voice from beside him: âHave you ever driven something thatâs not American?â Salim is trying to be a smart ass. Jason looks over to him, corner of his mouth quirked upwards. âHave you ever driven something without the Iraqi flag on it?â Salim didnât answer.
Everything seemed pretty amicable until Free Practice 1. They sat in the drivers briefing together as the directors went over the tactics for the weekend, the ideal driver for each stint and stint lengths. These were all subject to change, of course; but Jason was happy with what he was seeing. They walked around the track together, and despite the fact that most of the team spoke to each other in Arabic, for Jasonâs benefit they did everything in English. Jason kept to his lane, through the press, and the driversâ parade in town. He let Salim and Zain interact with him as much as they wanted to; after all, they had allowed him be here. Zain was, obviously, a lot more talkative than his father wanted to be; but Salim was at least acknowledging his presence.
Jason was due out first to get used to the car, walking through the garage in his new race suit he felt comfortable and ready. Heâd raced GTâs before; this wouldnât be so hard. A few laps and heâd be fine. He turned a corner to find Salim waiting for him.
ââŚHi?â The Iraqi keeps walking forward, backing Jason into the corner; out of sight of the mechanics. âListen to me, Jason. Youâre going to do your stints, youâre going to get out of that car, and youâre going to keep out of the way and keep quiet.â Jason blinks a few times â clearly Salim still isnât happy with him being here. He takes a deep breath, looking from Salimâs dark eyes. That gaze is a little too intense; despite what heâs saying, his voice is low â that calm angry growl to it that had sent Jason crazy during the very first qualifying session of the season. Well, it was sure working its magic on his body temperature now. The American swallows, âYeah man, okay.â Jason shifts to move past him; he needs to put his helmet on and get out there before the session starts and the clock is telling him heâs got less than four minutes. But Salim pulls him back; hard enough for Jasonâs back to touch the wall. âIâm watching you.â He leans in, now Jason barely has any breathing room, and he presses his spine further into the wall on purpose. âI donât want you here, but Zain does. So I swear to Allah, if you mess up, if you step out of line.â He grabs Jasonâs collar, a little gentler than he had before; âYouâll know about it.â Jason nods, trying to keep the upmost control on his expressions and heartrate. âSalim⌠I hear ya. Can I⌠get in the car before Iâm late?â Salim leans his body to the side so Jason can slip past him, and he watches the American go. The way Jasonâs body is tense; and he pulls at his race suit as if heâs nervous. Salim findâs his eyes sweeping the line of Jasonâs neck, over his shoulders, the curvature of his spine, and down his legs. Worse, heâs smirking. Salim shakes his head; telling himself itâs because heâs just put Jason in his place.
The uptick of his heart seems to suggest something different.
Salim expects Jason wonât listen. But surprisingly every time he gets out of the car Jason disappears to the far corner of the garage, or out of the garage all together and into his own ready room. There is one exception; when Salim gets out of the car at the end of a free practice session and Jason is leaning over one of the counters talking to Zain. His son is sitting at one of the engineersâ desks, surrounded by books and note pads. Salim slows down to listen in: He wants to walk over and tell Jason that he said to stay away. But the smile on Zainâs face⌠ââŚI donât know how you do it with all this noise.â âAt this point Iâm used to it, got some noise cancelling headphones. Someone can tap me to get me ready. I mean, aside from observing you and dad for a little while, itâs just dead time otherwise, huh?â âGuess Iâm the distraction now, right?â Zain laughs, âNot at all. Itâs nice to talk a little.â âFor sure, but I donât want to mess up your study time.â âI think car talk is a good enough reason⌠Are you sure about taking that corner flat, though?â âYou can do it. Just trust the car through there. Get enough on the apex and sheâll do the rest for you; promise. And you know her better than me.â Jason uses his hands to show the car through the corner trajectory. ââŚOkay⌠Iâll try it out. Thanks Jason.â âNo problem. If you donât like it though, doing what youâre doing works better than really backing off. I guess the real advice is donât get scared, then sheâll spit you into the wall.â Jason grimaces, âSorry, I shouldnâtaâŚâ âItâs okay. Crashes happen, right?â âThat does sound like some stupid shit Iâd say.â Jason smiles, but now he looks up and sees Salim standing there. But Salim isnât looking at Jasonâs face⌠in fact Jason isnât even sure what heâs looking at. Heâs listening but his stare is blank, despite the fact it is most definitely on Jasonâs body. He backs up for a moment, causing Salimâs eyes to move back up to his. âSorry, Iâm gonnaâŚâ Jason points over his shoulder and turns back to Zain, âYou need anything else, let me know, okay?â âSure! Thanks Jason!â Salim watches Jasonâs hips move beneath the tie off on his race suit, the way his muscles are so much better defined when heâs just wearing his flameproofs. â[What did he want?]â â[He just asked what I was studying! Wondered about how I did it. So, I mentioned the online classâŚ]â Zain smiles, â[Then he was giving me cornering tips, he said he was watching my driving all week.]â â...Mmm.â
Salim pats Zain on the shoulder, â[Iâll get changed before the debrief. Then we can go get some dinner, okay?]â â[Okay.]â Zain goes back to his work, and then turns around, â[Can Jason come?]â Salim freezes. This is the issue⌠He works through the annoyance on his face to find a smile and turns back to Zain. â[Sure. Why donât you go ask him?]â
There is obvious tension between the two of them at dinner. Zain either doesnât care or doesnât realise; and he keeps Jasonâs attention, mostly because he has a billion questions now he can get the American alone away from his team. Jason doesnât have a filter and Salim finds himself spending his time shaking his head or rolling his eyes. But Jason is interested in Zain, in his answers, and engages with him back and forth. Occasionally the two of them interact, but itâs small talk. They mostly stare at each other; but in polar opposite ways. Jason will keep stealing glances at Salim as he talks: in the same manner he did in the WEC. Like if Jason had a choice heâd never look away. Salim is evaluating every movement he makes; in judgement.
Really there isnât too much to judge except his language, Jason is on his best behaviour the whole time. And when it gets to race day, he does exactly what Salim asks of him. He does his stints, he puts the hard work and effort in, and then he keeps to himself. Jason interacts with Zain only when Zain asks him questions. He checks in with his engineers on his stats; he rests up, he eats and then he watches the screens â providing any feedback he hopes will be helpful. Otherwise itâs almost like Jason isnât even there.
Until the final stint. It isnât even supposed to be Jasonâs. Itâs supposed to be Salimâs. The engineers are gathered around the Iraqi watching the screens and debating. The car is off the podium. They are fourth. Zain is chasing down the car in third; the gap is closable. They need someone who can go a little faster to capitalise on the opportunity when it comes around. Salim knows that isnât him. The engineers are arguing amongst themselves what the move is. Keep Zain in just a little longer, get him past the car and then get Salim in to steadily bring it home? Take Zain out now and see what Salim can do. Or just accept fourth place. Salimâs eyes move beyond the team gathered around him, and over to Jason who is watching the race on the screens. Oh, the podium is doable. â[Iâm not the answer.]â Salim taps his engineer and then moves through them and over to Jason. Of all the people to have to rely onâŚ
Thatâs what heâs here for.
Jason is eating, sitting up on the engineering desks with his arms wrapped around his knees. Scattered around him are his electrolyte and hydrating gels, and protein bars. His eyes are glued to the screen: Zain is so close but so far. And Jason is all out of advice to give; he just needs to take the chance. But fourth place is better than crashing outâŚ
Is it worth the risk?
Suddenly Salimâs hands are slammed on the desk next to him. Jason looks over, eyebrow quirked. Salimâs eyes are intense. âYou are the fastest person out here. Weâre looking at the final stint.â âYeah?â As far as Jason is concerned heâs done. He did his before Zain got back in the car, this one is Salimâs. He glances back to his snacks: these are for recovery, not racing. âProve it. Get us on the podium.â Salim nods to the screen. Jason glances back up to watch Zain get oh so close once again. But this isnât just about what theyâve decided. This isnât about the kid anymore⌠This is Salim asking him to put them on the podium. This is Salim believing in him. Jason doesnât dare want to believe heâs warming up to the idea of Jason being here. In the final stint of the race. Jason throws whatâs left of the bar into his mouth and nods.
âOkay, get Zain in and get me in the damn car now. Theyâre pitting too. Those tyres are shot.â Jason claps Salim on the back as he jumps from the table and jogs over to his helmet. Salim looks to the screens, realising Jason is right! He calls the team over: change of plan!
â[Dad!!! Dad!!!]â Salim can hear Zain long before he sees him. Just as Jason before him, Salimâs eyes are glued to the monitors. Zain is breathless, heâs sprinted to the back of the garage; â[Why is Jason getting in?! I thought this was your stint.]â Be steady. Bring it home in one piece. That had been the plan. Salim looks over, beaming, â[You put us in such a great position for the podium Zain, Iâm so proud of you!]â He pulls his son into a one-armed embrace and nods to the screen; â[Hopefully, Jason can do the rest.]â Salim has to concede, â[I canât do what he does.]â
He almost regrets his choice, half watching through his fingers at points as the garage yelp in unison at the way Jason is scrapping with the third place car. Heâs going for gaps that Salim is pretty sure donât exist. The door shuts every time, but it does not deter Jason, and he does not give back the place easily once he has it halfway through a corner. Then, after dropping back, just slightly to retry, Jason makes his move at the end of the Kemmel straight. He tries for the inside; which meant third place would be moving to the outside for the very quick chicane corner to avoid being hit with a track limits violation; itâs a fake and the car moves; the second he sees it go, Jason slams his foot on the accelerator and despite the fact the move is over in ten seconds, it feels like ten minutes to the crew in the pit. Everyone is cheering â now Jason just has to hold it. But Jason isnât satisfied with holding it; heâs got a fast car under him, and heâs just done what he was asked to do. â[Thereâs no wayâŚ]â Zain breathes as he realises â[Heâs going for second.]â â[If he breaks the damn car, Iâll kill him.]â Salim growls, shaking his head and he means it. Heartbreak has happened on the very last lap of a 24-hour race before and if Jason becomes the cause at this one, he wonât be seen in the WEC again.
The end result is not as tight as Jason wants it to be. Second place is still a few seconds up the road when they cross the line â Jasonâs made him sweat but, any move would have been stupid at this stage. He knows when not to throw it away. But heâs managed to get a comfortable respectable third and bring the margin on second down in the process. A podium at his first Spa 24 Hours canât be bad at all.
Zain sprints to him as he hops out of the car, âJASON! You did it!! You got us third!â The American is laughing before his helmet is even off, âHey no way, we did it â if you didnât get us that close, I never would have been in the car! Thanks to you Zain!â Jason accepts the hug before turning to Salim, who had strolled over, extending his hand. âThat was exactly what we needed, Jason.â Jason takes his hand with a smile, âWell, of course. I told you Iâd do what you asked me this weekend.â Salim couldnât argue with that. He had.
They step up onto the podium together and Jason feels more relief than he does jubilation. Heâs happy to have survived, to have not let the side down, to have not been yelled at, or⌠whatever the hell else Salim would have done to him. But heâs also never felt so awkward and lonely as watching Salim and Zain celebrate together in the champagne spray. He doesnât want to interrupt that. This is a big moment that should be shared between father and son. Sure; heâs sprayed some at the other two teams, but they are now huddled in their little groups of three laughing and chatting. Jason sighs and looks to the bottle in his hands, before tipping it up to drink some. Itâs not bad stuff for being mostly there to end up covering the floor of the podium and the other drivers. As he continues to drink Jason suddenly find himself with a face full of it. He jerks back, coughing, and gasps as cold rivulets find their way under his race suit. Turning to the side he sees Salim looking pleased with himself. Jasonâs eyes are stinging but heâs laughing as Salim does it again. Shaking his bottle to see if he can get it to spray one more time to get Salim back. But every time Jason thinks heâs got there, Salim gets there first. Jason is laughing too hard to get the words out to tell him to stop â which is unfortunate, because Zain joins his fatherâs onslaught thinking they are celebrating not that its payback. By the time they are escorted off the podium for the next class, Jason is soaked.
When he gets back to the trailer, Jason is still carrying a champagne bottle that somehow even now has alcohol in the bottom. Heâs exhausted; it feels like heâs been thrown in front of every press member at the circuit; but heâs finally free.
Heâs received a bunch of congratulatory messages from his friends â most of which heâs finally going to have time to reply to now. Pushing open the door with his elbow he flicks on the lights to see two other champagne bottles sitting on his table. Both engraved with â3â. Salim and Zain canât drink⌠Theyâve given whatever they had left to him.
Jason places his gently down next to them, and smiles. The hard work had paid off. Heâd done a race that heâd always wanted to and got a podium. But somehow he doesnât feel quite satisfied.  Jason just canât place his finger on why⌠The phone in his pocket buzzes again and Jason checks it.
Yeah, heâs got a lot to reply to!
Salim and Zain have spent the majority of the past few hours celebrating and eating with the crew. Itâs certainly been a day worth celebrating. Things start to get quieter in the motorhome the later into the night it gets and catering start packing things away. Salim hasnât seen Jason at all. Sure, heâs told the American to keep quiet and out of the way, but even when Jason is tucked into a little corner Salim still notices him. He frowns, leaving Zain laughing with some of the mechanics he wanders over to the catering staff.
â[Did Jason come by and eat?]â Maybe he took himself back to his room. â[Eat? No, he asked for some spoons and that was it.]â â[Spoons!?]â That was weird, he doubted that Jason would have done his own catering; and what could he need just spoons for? He shakes his head, that idiot. Didnât he know eating was just as important to aid recovery as anything else. â[Do you have something I could take him?]â
Salim takes a plate up to Jasonâs ready room, knocking gently. âJason?â âUh huh?â At least heâs inside. âCan I come in?â âUh huhâŚâ This sounds less sure, but Salim still takes it as a positive response and opens the door.
Jason has his mobile in his left hand and one bottle of champagne in his right. Music is playing softly from the speakers, but Salim canât tell exactly what it is. Heâs changed into team gear â hair wet under his cap, heâs also had a shower to rid himself of the tacky feel of champagne. âAre you alright?â âIâm⌠fine, yeah, just fine.â Jason adjusts the position his sitting in uncomfortably. âYou should eat; theyâre packing away.â Salim steps through the door and closes it, revealing that he has food with him. âYou brought me something?â âWell, I interrupted your recovery earlier, but you still need to do it.â He sets the plate on the table in front of Jason and indicates to the seat next to him. âMay I?â âSure.â Jasonâs voice sounds wary, and he watches Salimâs every movement as he sits next to him. Salim blows out a breath, relaxing back into the couch and staring at the ceiling.
There are a few moments of silence. And realising Salim isnât going to move any time soon, Jason places the bottle down, and picks up the plate. Salim watches as the American tries at first to eat carefully, politely even, but soon realises how hungry he is and piles his fork far higher than he should. Salim thinks if Jason isnât careful, heâs about to choke. His eyes move to the rest of Jasonâs room. The trophy is carefully deposited on his shelf; still looking covered in champagne and podium confetti. The two bottles of champagne belonging to himself and Zain are now sitting on the small table in front of them. Each now with a spoon placed in the top â to stop them from going flat. That explained it.
âYou didnât have to do that.â Jasonâs voice is muffled through his mouthful of food as he realises what Salimâs looking at, âThatâs very nice of you.â ââŚWell,â Salim shrugs, âYou actually drink.â âI know, but-â âItâs the least we can do to say thank you.â Jason stills, fork halfway to his mouth, and those brown eyes look to Salim hardly daring to hope that heâs being as sincere as he sounds. âWithout you, that wouldnât be sitting there. You got us a podium, Jason. Thank you for putting in the effort this weekend. I know I havenât made it easy. Despite this being a race you desperately wanted to partake in.â â âs nothinâ. It was a group effort.â âYes, the team⌠Of course. But the team didnât make that final overtake, didnât make it stick, and didnât pull out a gap and chase down second place either Jason. You did.â âWithout you beinâ steady and Zain getting that close I wouldnât have had the opportunity. Iâm happy to be here, you didnât have to have me.â He waves to the trophy, fork finally reaching his mouth muffling his speech again, âThatâs just a bonus.â âJasonâŚâ Salim waits for the American to look back at him. âI mean it. Thank you.â âYou keep sayinâ that. And I keep tellin-â âWithout your observation⌠which was insane, by the way⌠you knew that pit stop was coming. You see things out on that track⌠the way you drive. Having you as a teammate here, everything makes sense. Youâre a great driver, Jason. You could be one of the best.â Jason shakes his head, âIt was just luck. I coulda made the wrong call.â âBut you didnât.â And Salim didnât think it was anything to do with luck at all â it felt so much more like Jason had that intuition. Jason gives a shrug, and continues eating in silence, head down. Salim takes a breath. âJason⌠you should be celebrating with the crew, not alone.â âIâm okay.â Salim tries again. âJason, do you want to come and sit with us?â His head rises just enough for his brown eyes to peek out under his cap; and he narrows them slightly. Salim knows that Jason is trying to figure out if this invitation is genuine. âAre you⌠sure?â âYes, Iâm sure. They all want to celebrate with you too. Especially Zain.â Jason laughs through his nose; setting the now empty plate aside. âOh yeah? And what about you, do you want me there?â Salim gives a playful shrug, although he can see the tell-tale signs of a smile on Jasonâs face, âWeekend is over. You did what I asked. I canât exactly punish you for the result.â This time Jason lets out a full-blown laugh, before seemingly realising what heâs doing and quickly centring himself to a more neutral expression. His eyes flick across to Salimâs again, âThe boys said you put blue on the car for me, is that true?â Salim mimics Jasonâs head tip, trying to keep his own expression as neutral as possible as Jasonâs smile starts growing again. âI couldnât possibly say.â
Jason nods like heâs caught him and then his face falls again. âHey Salim?â âMhm?â âIâm sorry.â Salim canât help but show his surprise. Jason looks away, a little embarrassed. âAt the beginning of the year, when I say Iâd have bumped Zain off the track too? Iâm sorry I said that.â âJasonâŚâ âHeâs just a kid in with the big boys. But heâs a great driver, heâs got potential beyond what everyone sees and says in the papers â hell, they both do⌠once he gets the opportunity and experience to grow. I shouldnât have said that.â The Iraqi just smiles, âI accept your apology.â Salim isnât sure he needs to say it, but by the way Jason relaxes in relief he knows that the American needs to hear it. Salim smiles a little wider and continues: âHe idolises you, you know? Wants to be as fast as you, in a team like yours.â Jason shakes his head, âHeâs idolising the wrong person.â His hand reaches out and hesitates for a second, but, then he pats Salimâs back, âSteady beats fast any day. Iâm gonna burn out. Youâll probably be on this grid forever.â Salim shakes his head, he doesnât think so. Jasonâs star is way too bright for that. Heâs not here to be bigger than the team though â despite what the team and the fans make of him â Jason is a great leader and team player. This weekend Salim has realised something about this man: itâs the closest heâs ever been to him, most time heâs ever had to get to know him. Jason is a nice guy really; he just doesnât want to show it. âI donât think so. Thank you for helping him out.â âAlways. I was a kid like that once too, yâknow. Iâve had some good role models. Iâd likeâŚâ Jason grimaces realising heâs about to sound big headed, âIâd like Zain to have the same. And Tariq too if he wants some coaching. Heâs already damn quick though â and Zainâs getting there.â Jason waves his hands to stop his rambling. But thereâs something endearing to Salim about the way Jason acts when heâs embarrassed. The way he tries to deflect from it. Salimâs also getting used to the pink dust on his cheeks every time they talk. âJason. Iâm sorry.â Jason stills again â Salim can tell heâs about to ask âfor whatâ so he stops him. âFor my attitude towards you this weekend.â âSalim, itâs not like it was undeserved.â âNo, listen to me.â The Americanâs eyes widen, âItâs been a real pleasure to race with you out there. You listened to every one of my ridiculous demands. You were ready to go when we needed you the most.â âYouâre protecting your kid, Salim. And I donât have the best attitude.â âBut thatâs what I mean.â Jason almost jolts as Salim places his hand just above his knee. Jason finds himself getting uncomfortably warm as it stays there. âWhen we are back on rival teams in the WEC. I would quite like â if it is still okay with you â to remainâŚâ friends is not the right word. And Salim knows Jason doesnât just want to be friends. âacquainted.â Jason doesnât hesitate. âIâll be there⌠if Zain needs me.â Salim shakes his head, âIâm not just talking about Zain.â The pink tint darkens, âI⌠Iâd like to keep talking to you, like this, too.â Salim smiles, voice low again so it produces that growl sound that makes Jason shiver: âGood.â
Relief as he finally removes his hand from Jasonâs thigh, Salim turns to the door, âSo, about celebrating with the team?â Jason grins, grabbing one of the other champagne bottles, his first is clearly empty: âWell, letâs not keep âem waiting!â
***
Things seem better between them after that: the two of them work to keep things amicable between the teams too â always on hand to keep things from going too far. Although when Merwin and Nick ask about how the Spa 24 hours team worked Jason gives a shrug and tells them it was fine. They saw what everyone else did: Jason got them on the podium in the last stint. Jason knows it wasnât all his work, but saying that to them is more trouble than itâs worth. At least right away.
They talk and catch up whenever theyâre in the same room or passing each other, in corridors and the paddock. And every so often heâll have time to answer a question or two for Salimâs young teammates.
But the bond⌠the friendship?... formed between them at Spa doesnât truly get tested until theyâre facing the back half of the season. Championship points are still all to play for and itâs a mad scramble all the way through the pack. It leads to risky and downright reckless moves. From all classes.
Jason doesnât see what happens. But three cars moving down a straight into a corner like that is never going to go. On track they are still competitors â and that means no matter what, Salim is still chasing Jason to beat him. Jasonâs eyes flick to his mirrors.
Salim is there one second, moving through the GT class cars⌠and then nothing. But there is enough of an impact between the three for debris to kick up everywhere⌠and then Jason sees smoke. âShit, SalimâŚâ Jason almost keeps his eyes on his mirrors too long and has to brake hard for the sudden Full Course Yellow. It turns into a safety car and the next time they go around the track, Salimâs car is being pulled behind the barriers; parts are charred up. One of the other GTs is a mess; hauled out by tractor. He can see the driver just beyond the barriers but⌠Salim isnât there. âIs he okay? It caught fire, right?â Jason checks on the radio. Thereâs a few moments silence before Rachel comes back to him, âThey took him to medical Jason, but it seems precautionary. The car did catch but he was out by then. Trust me, theyâve shown the replays enough.â âThanks Rach. Always good to hear.â âYeah, I always hold my breathâŚâ The radio chimes out and Jason is left with his thoughts. It was a bad crash. What if that precaution turned into something else? And getting left in the car overthinking wasnât good for anyone. Jason resolved that at the end of the race, he would go and see Salim.
The podium is somewhat of a blur for him because heâs so distracted. One second Jason is getting called to the cool down room, the next heâs stepping off, covered in champagne and carrying a trophy in his arms. These are vital championship points. But Jason isnât thinking about the standings at all right now.
He drops everything off at his ready room, stripping his overalls to his waist he changes his shirt for a team polo, splashes himself with water, but goes no further. He is out the door, running down the paddock, before Eric has the chance to finish yelling after him: âJason! We still need to debrief!â For Jason, this is so much more important than that.
He climbs onto the Yalla Speed team stand without much resistance until Dar spots him. Jasonâs eyes are darting around, and he stands still a little too long. Or maybe heâs noticed because every team member that passes him is congratulating him on making it to the podium again. Jason is thanking them, but, heâs still distractedâŚÂ Where is Salim?!
Dar stalks across the motorhome â arm barring Jason from advancing any further, before pushing him back towards the entrance. âJason, what the hell are you doing here!? Get back to your own team!â Jason resists Darâs pushing, still looking around, âIt looked bad, I saw it in the mirror â Is he okay!?â âHeâs fine!â âWell I just want to make sure-â âJason! Get off our motorhome before I get security to escort you off.â Jasonâs eyes narrow at Dar â he should know better than to argue with a team principal but he doesnât. âJust let me see him!â Over Darâs shoulder Jason spots Zain and Tariq wondering whatâs the commotions about. Jason takes one step back for breathing room, turning his body so heâs sideways â heâs facing them now and it makes it harder for Dar to push him. âYou two okay?â Zain and Tariq look to each other before nodding back at Jason, âWeâre okay, Jason. Dadâs okay too.â Dar gets impatient, but when he tries to force Jason to move another step the American digs in again. Just how many times does he need to hear Salim is okay? âKolchek.â And that is a threat. Jason isnât heeding it. âWhat, you think Iâm here to steal trade secrets?!â He sighs, âJust let me see Salim and Iâll leave, I promise.â âGet. Off. Our home. Now.â Dar points to the exit and heâs not asking, his grip on Jasonâs arms tightens and itâs about to get forceful. â[Dar. Let him go.]â They both turn in the direction of the new voice and Jason almost instantly collapses; glad that Dar still has such a firm grip on him that itâs probably the only thing holding him upright. Salim is standing with his arms folded, having just appeared from one of the back rooms; his hair is damp, thereâs a towel around his waist. And thatâs all heâs wearing. But he looks okay, no scrapes or burns or bruises beyond the ones Jason would expect to see from physio work. Somewhere in his mind Jason is coherent enough to say something smart to Dar like âSee, thatâs all I asked!â and then say that âitâs okay! Iâll head back out now!â But none of this reaches his mouth.
Salim turns his eyes from his Team Principal to Jason. âYou wanted to see me?â Jason imagines he must look like heâs melted into the floor. He opens his mouth, and all he manages is a breath before he places his hands on his hips, throwing his head down so his face is covered by his cap, he moves on his feet a little this way and then a little the other. Finally he manages, âI did.â Dar lets him go and Jason lifts his head enough for Salim to see those brown eyes below the brim, Salim flicks his head back into the room heâd appeared from and turns to walk back in. Jason takes a good five seconds to find feeling in his feet enough to move; catching up with Salimâs slower walk.
He climbs the short flight of steps into Salimâs room, but itâs like heâs not even in his own body. Salim instructs him to close the door behind him and Jason does so, before Salim gestures to the chairs. Jason opts instead to lean against one of the shelves, sitting down doesnât seem like a good idea. Salim leans against the table, crossing his feet at the ankle and folding his arms again. âJason, why are you here?â âI justâŚâ Jason is looking at the floor again, âwanted to know youâre okayâŚâ âJason, you didnât need to come here to do that. Why are you here?â ââŚIt wasnât enough just to hear it.â Salim tips his head, Jason is mumbling to his feet. His body language is shy. Salimâs eyes flick down to himself. Fair enough. But if he hadnât rescued Jason from Dar then who knows what would have happened. And that would have caused press attention.
âJason, look at me.â âI canât.â Itâs a struggle to say. âJason, look at me.â Itâs a little more forceful and commanding. Except his name. Jason doesnât think heâs ever heard someone say it that softly before. With Salimâs accent the âJâ has a âYâ like quality that makes Jason shiver. He raises his head and his gaze slowly, and heâs bright red. Salim canât help but think he looks adorable. He shakes his head, â[There. You shouldnât hide a face so pretty.]â Jason tips his own head, eyebrow furrowed, âHuh?â Salim smiles, âCongratulations on second place. Iâm sure it was hard for you to not take the victory.â Jason snorts, embarrassed, âShuddup.â This time Salim laughs, it makes Jason relax. But his eyes trace Salimâs body; his arms and shoulders â especially when folded â are huge. Beautifully defined in copper; warm. Jason canât help but wonder what itâs like to be held by them. His gaze grazes down. Salimâs chest is also defined but his stomach muscles are softer. Heâs still at the peak of his fitness but heâs getting older. Heâs built bigger than Jason in any case. The towel wraps around his hips; and Jasonâs entire body grows hotter from the pit of his stomach as he follows the âVâ. âOkay, stop before you REALLY embarrass yourself!!!â He traces them back up over the smattering of hair over Salimâs stomach and chest and up to his face. Horrifically, Jason realises heâs being watched. He has no excuses, he canât possibly be looking at anything else: but there is no judgement in Salimâs eyes. âWhat do you want, Jason?â Jason shakes his head, âI donât-â âWhat do you want, Jason?â Salim repeats himself, but heâs patient. Itâs not demanding. Heâs coaxing. Itâs giving Jason time â but Jason doesnât want time. He wants to get out of here⌠Salim takes a step forward, his voice barely above a murmur, âTell me, American boy.â Salim smirks, âYouâve never had much trouble beforeâŚâ
Jason canât speak again, heâs trying. Noises are escaping but theyâre not words. âGive me a secondâ he pleads. âGive me a second to make my excuse and leave you alone!â âIâŚâ Jason has nothing else. â[I know.]â
Salim takes two strides forward and suddenly Jason finds himself pressed up against the shelving: it rattles against the wall with the force of not only his body weight, but Salimâs too. And Salimâs lips are pressed against his. Jason has no idea how to react. This is insane. This canât be happening. Itâs one thing for Jason to have a crush in the first place. Itâs another for Salim to have realised that. But to reciprocate!? But Salimâs eyes are closed, and his hands are holding Jasonâs face. Fingers tucked up under Jasonâs ears, thumbs pressed delicately against his cheek bones. Jasonâs entire chest feels tight; heâs panicking. He wants this so badly he doesnât want it. Heâs overthinking. Any second Dar is going to walk through that door and this is over before it starts. Or Jason will come to and realise heâs daydreamed the whole thing in one of Ericâs boring ass debriefs.
What he hates thinking is this inaction is giving Salim the wrong message. Itâs telling Salim he doesnât want this, that heâs not interested. That all the signals have been read wrong.
Jason cannot reassure him that this couldnât be further from the truth.
He closes his eyes; and all the pressure in his chest escapes in a muffled whine against Salimâs lips. Jason needs to sit in the moment. If he doesnât, heâs going to miss their first kiss. Jason brings his hands up; theyâre shaking but he wraps them around Salimâs shoulders and pulls the Iraqi a little closer. The shelves rattle again with added pressure and Salim takes a hand away from Jasonâs face to steady them. He pulls back slightly, eyes open. Jason is completely flushed. âAre you okay?â Jason blinks a few times. He knows he canât voice that. Best he can manage is a nod. âOkay.â Salim smiles and pushes forward again, lips back to Jasonâs, he moves the other hand cupping Jasonâs face to his waist, guiding their bodies together. Salim must have just got out of the shower because heâs so warm. Jason is doing his best not to dig his fingers into Salimâs skin as Salim starts working his mouth against Jasonâs. Jason reciprocates slowly: when the fuck was the last time he kissed someone? He hopes this doesnât feel bad. The Iraqi moves his hand a little lower, down to Jasonâs hip bone, where he rubs his thumb across it adding a little more pressure each time until Jason whines again. This time much more involuntarily. Salim capitalises on the moment with his tongue, a gentle trace â almost teasing â across Jasonâs slightly parted lips. The American relents almost immediately, but at the same time his whole body collapses. The shelves rattle a new level of loud as Jason slips so far, heâs practically sitting on them. Salimâs rubbing becomes a steady grip on Jasonâs hip to make sure he doesnât fall over entirely. He breaks the kiss âShhh,â itâs more soothing than it is scolding, âtry not to bring my shelving unit with you, Jason.â He teases, before kissing Jason gently again. Jason pulls back, âCan youâŚâ he swallows, âtry again?â  âMhm.â Salim presses a kiss to the tip of Jasonâs nose before moving back into his lips; this time Jason is ready for his tongue and lets Salim explore him. Salim lets Jason explore in return as much as he feels ready to â tongue playful and teasing towards the younger man. When he can feel Jason start trying to pant for air he pulls back again.
Jason is going to need a few minutes to return to a normal colour before he can leave. âHow⌠did youâŚ?â He manages. âHow did I know?â Salim smiles, âIf you hadnât before, I would say the way you were staring at me made it fairly obvious, American boy.â ââŚIâm that obvious?!â âThis season? Yes.â Jason is horrified: ââŚYou noticed before!?!â ââŚHere and there. Things have started to make more sense now.â He places a careful chaste kiss to the corner of Jasonâs mouth. Salim brings his hand up, placing his index, middle, and ring finger at different points along Jasonâs jaw, he tips Jasonâs chin up. âSince Spa⌠Iâve⌠seen you in a different light. Youâre a good man, Jason. Despite your attempt to bury him somewhere no one can find him. And youâre very pretty.â Even Jasonâs ears are starting to turn pink, âYou think Iâm pretty?â ââŚMhm⌠For an American.â Jason canât help but be amused as Salim lets him go. He steps back, turning away, and Jason feels like he can finally breathe normally, although it doesnât take long for him to miss that closeness as his eyes trace Salimâs bare shoulders and the dip in the middle of his spine. Shit. Heâs so fucking hot⌠âAre you wearinâ anythinâ under that?â Salim half turns, âWhy, would you like to see me naked?â Jason eyes grow wide and he looks to the ceiling. âI---â âWhy donât I just forget you asked.â Salim pulls his team shirt over his head, âNow if you wouldnât mind turning aroundâŚâ Jason canât do so fast enough; rattling the shelves again as he almost smacks into them. A tiny part of him wants to peek over his shoulder, but, he knows he shouldnât. Jason keeps his eyes facing forward until Salimâs arms wrap around his waist and he places another kiss where Jasonâs jaw and neck meet. Jason shivers again. âYou can look, now.â
Jason turns to where Salim is wearing a team polo and dark jeans. He realises heâs still in overalls, and heâs missing a team briefing. He groans in realisation and Salim laughs. âKeeping you from something?â âEricâs gonna kill me.â âIf it means anything to you, thank you for checking that Iâm okay. Full assessment and all clear. In case you needed telling.â âNo, IâŚâ Jason is still hot, although heâs returning to a normal colour, âI can see that.â âGood. Do you want to hide out from Eric King some more?â âIâm more worried about your TP.â âAh, Dar? RightâŚâ Salim almost forgot. âYou call the shots around here?â ââŚNo,â Salimâs smile is playful, âJust good friends. And stubborn.â Jason nods, âShit, I really should get going⌠But I⌠weâŚâ Salim shakes his head, âWe can talk about it in a moment thatâs more appropriate, Jason. Itâs okayâŚâ ââŚYou do⌠feel the same, donât you?â âI fear Iâve done a bad job if you need to ask.â Jason grins, taking the steps this time to close the gap between them and kiss Salim. âJust checking!â
Then he goes pale, âFUCK! What is Zain going to say!?â âYou leave my son to me. Itâs just a kiss, Jason. Weâll talk. Later.â Though Salim pulls him back by his collar, and the kiss he leaves Jason with is searing. âNow go.â
Jason is surprised he can function enough to find the door out of there, let alone throw a hand back to Zain to say goodbye. Truthfully, he can barely look at the kid and hopes that he hasnât started flushing again. Did everyone hear that? The damn shelf was making enough noise by itself for the both of them! The glass doors part for him and he finds that Clarice is standing at the bottom of the steps, waiting for him with folded arms. Shit, he was in so much trouble!
He canât even play it off cool, heâs vulnerable right now â and heâs mortified that sheâs caught him like this. âWhat are you doing here!?â He immediately plays defensive. âThey sent me to find you! I had to ask damn near half the paddock, if Dar hadnât sent someone out to find us in a persuasion attempt to get you back, I wouldnât have known! But Iâm not setting foot in there, can you imagine the rumours!?â She points back to the Cadillac garages. âJason you just ran off without saying anything before the briefing! To Yalla no less!?â âWhat!? Jesus itâs not like Iâm joining their team Clarice!â âYou wanna say that any louder Jason!â âGod forbid I make your job harder!â She pinches his ear, âDamn right!â Unfortunately itâs the exact same one, and in a similar position to where Salimâs lips were a few minutes earlier and Jasonâs body vibrates. Clarice pulls back. âYou okay!?â âYeahâŚâ âJason, youâre shaking?â âIâm okay!â He insists; even though he knows full well she felt that involuntary shudder too. Jason looks back over his shoulder, but thereâs nothing but reflective glass facing him. Salim isnât coming to see him off. âIâm okayâŚâ âOkayâŚâ But Clarice isnât sure she believes that for a second, âletâs go, Ericâs waiting.â âOh, yeahâŚâ Although Jason sounds like he couldnât care less. With that, Clarice tugs on Jasonâs arm gently to get him walking, and escorts him back to the Cadillac team briefing.
Jason canât stop replaying the kiss in his head for the rest of the day. Itâs a late night flight, and he wonders if heâs even going to be able to catch any sleep. He can feel Salimâs lips and body pressed against his. Recalls the way Salim tastes as he rolls his tongue around his mouth. If he thought he had it bad before, Jason thinks the Iraqi has made things a hundred times worse.
Jason spots the man he canât stop thinking about across the airport terminal, sitting at a gate marked up for London. Salim is staring at the airport traffic outside; Jason can bet heâs waiting for Zain. Jason runs over â currently heading to his own gate â and slumps into the seat next to him.
Salim feels the presence, and turns to look. Jason is sitting looking a little awkward, maybe even uncomfortable. Salim waits patiently for him to speak, but, Jason is a little too nervous his eyes are skittish too and he can only briefly look at Salimâs face before they wander deeper into the airport. âJason?â Salim prompts. He takes a deep breath, âYou kissed me and I donât even have your numberâŚâ Salim smirks, eyes drifting back to the window. âThat sounds like a you problem.â Jason starts spluttering, but soon realises that Salim is holding his right hand out. Jason almost hits the ceiling in joy as he canât scramble quick enough to hand his phone over. Salim flips it around and starts typing his number in before looking across to Jason curiously, âAnything else, American boy?â Jason blushes horribly; he doesnât like the nickname but thereâs something about the way that Salim says it. Itâs a tease, itâs goading Jason to do something, but the American isnât sure what yet. Really, Jason would like to kiss again. But he knows they canât start making out in the middle of an airport even if it isnât so crowded right now. âHave a safe flight home.â Salim smiles, as he hands Jasonâs phone back, he allows their hands to touch a little too long â after all, he too realises they canât kiss goodbye in the middle of the airport. âYou too. Weâll talk soon. About whatever we are.â Jason nods, and stands again, but this time he indicates towards the plaque for the gate. âMaybe in London?â Salimâs smile morphs back into a smirk that Jason is starting to adore.

The two of them spend the rest of the year figuring it out together. Race weekends are easy; it starts with little brushes or touches as they pass in the paddock, the corridor or on the grid, fingertips tracing across shoulders or lower backs as one or other moves from interview to interview through the media cycle. The kind of thing that looks like a casual âexcuse me!â to anyone else; but it isnât to them.
It graduates to holding hands or at the very least touching hands whenever they sit together, sometimes under tables at signing sessions, or media events. And always looks that linger a little too long.
And somehow the inter-team rivalries get better â the banter enters a new level. Much more friend than rivalry. And never again with viciousness. They twist in just a little bit of personal information that they know about each other every time they joke, and it makes things fresh and interesting.
If either of them is present on the podium without the other, they will always be watching the celebration. Just inconspicuous enough. And being on the podium together is always a blast (Salim hasnât stopped specifically targeting Jason with those short sharp jets of Champagne (or otherwise)).
They agree that seeing each other too frequently in the off season could be dangerous â long distance is hard, but itâs not impossible. Besides, Zainâs almost caught the two of them sneaking around, itâs no good adding him to the vicinity. They arenât ready for that yet⌠But the kid is smart; Jason thinks he probably already knows. It still produces an anxiety point for him, and heâll bring it up time and again as Salim traces his fingers over Jasonâs skin when they lie together in one or the others hotel room.
Fucking your teamâs championship rivals star driver? When his kid is on the grid? Come on now!
As they move into the next season itâs a little easier to start introducing new elements. Theyâve been able to get closer over the off season so, theyâre finding it easier to sneak around â âaccidentallyâ ending up around each otherâs garages, the teams âsuddenlyâ time their track walks perfectly to follow each other, they turn up to track days together. Everything from the previous season still applies â including the fact Dar is still never too happy to see Jason lurking around the Yalla garage; but given Salim had already gotten away with it once, it keeps happening.
The media starts asking the inevitable questions, itâs not like Salim and Jason were hanging out on the regular before despite the friendly scraps between teams. Jason answers diplomatically always with a laugh, because thatâs what heâs heard Salim do. âWell, we were teammates in last yearâs Spa 24, so it makes sense weâre friends now. Donât you worry, on track Iâm not giving him an inch â and I expect heâll say the same!â
Friends. Thatâs what Jason is settling with. The Cadillac team will start asking questions heâs sure but for now he gets to call them friends and get people off his back. He still loves that little knowing smirk Salim will give him every time they catch eyes when Salim walks past. And if Jason has something to support him at the time (chair, wallâŚ) he will just let himself melt. But he also likes putting on his shades and staring as Salim walks away, especially if heâs got his race suit tied around his waist and his fireproofs on: âUh, hi⌠yeah⌠youâre gorgeous? That outfit is skin tight. Holy fuck⌠IâmâŚâ
That didnât mean that on track they werenât still butting heads. Yelling at each other in the back of the garages about stupid reckless moves. This year the Hypercar field has expanded, and this early on all teams need all the points they can get to establish themselves. Everyone is taking every risk.
Salim calls Jason desperate. Jason gets mad. Later that night they make up and make out about it.
And so the season goes. Points are tight; and next comes the biggest race on the calendar. The one that would cement you as a legend if you won overall. Double points to boot. The 24 hour race that counts.
Le Mans.
***
Jason only cares about two things at this race. The Hyperpole lap â because heâs overconfident that heâll get it â and the race victory.
With an entire week of build up before the race, Jason doesnât even need to think about the qualifying until Thursday. The rest of his time is spent locking in with the team, walking, running and cycling the track so he knows every inch off by heart. Spa might be one of Jasonâs favourites, along with a host of the US tracks â COTA being his favourite for obvious reasons; itâs his home race â but there isnât another track like Le Mans.
This is the one where fitness and rest and experience matter so much. An expanded grid due to how special the race is means more cars than WEC drivers are used to. Zain and Tariq pin Jason and Salim down for advice as much as they can. This may be their second Hypercar race here, but the last one was a blur for them â or so they say â and Jason isnât surprised to hear it. He co-ops Nick into these discussions whenever he can: Nick is nice and much more patient than Jason. Even though Jason is trying to instil his wisdom, he can be a little sharp, and heâd rather have back up.
Jason lives off the energy of the fans: the signing session is both exhausting and rewarding and he finds himself acquiring friendship bracelets in all shades of blue. Itâs his favourite colour as well as the colour of their car. Itâs fun to talk to fans from around the world; sure, Cadillac is the American team but the fans wearing the merch are from much further afield. Jason might be aware of that â but to see them all descend on a tiny town in France for a week still seems insane.
He comes agonisingly close to Hyperpole. Heâs not a fan of parking up in the pit lane. There isnât even a second place board â and the margin is so small⌠Fireworks fly for the pole sitter and Jason feels a little sick. But he knows the stats â less than 20% of pole sitters win the race. Second is a great place to start from â but thereâs 24 hours of racing ahead. Salim wanders over, leaning against the Cadillac along with Jason, who is watching the Hyperpole ceremony on the screen â scowl on his face. âHow much was in it?â âPoint zero six. Shit, I knew I shoulda taken that corner on full. I slipped on the first run and just thought I was better safe than in the wall, butâŚâ He clicks his tongue. âWhere are you?â âSixth. Not bad, huh?â âDamn!â Jason grins âWell you better make up those four places in the first stint, and we can run around together.â âOh, youâre starting?â Jason snorts, âNah, Nicky will keep us out of trouble.â âRight. So maybe weâll be on stints together laterâŚâ Jason stands up and Salim follows suit, âYou doing the full 12?â âMaybe not. Maybe 10. The kids can take 7 fine. Last year was⌠a lot.â Jason nods, âRather you than me.â âEven split?â âUnless it goes very wrong.â And Jason hopes it doesnât. Trying to go that fast for so many hours takes a lot out of him for what heâs been allotted, let alone extra. Jason grins and holds his hand out, Salim shakes it, âMay the best team win!â âCongratulations on second Jason. Itâs still a Hyperpole to me.â
Jason is left with pink cheeks from the wink.
The race is upon them before they know it, with just a little bit of rest on drivers parade day. Jasonâs running all over the place and causing chaos for the other teams by pinging Cadillacâs rubber bracelets at them. He takes as many pictures and signs as many autographs as he can. By the end heâs tired and sweaty and his cheeks hurt from smiling so much. He stops by Salimâs trailer briefly as the sun starts to set, away from the noise of the crowd and social media team. Salim is reading, wearing a t-shirt and team branded tracks. Around his wrist though, there is a Cadillac Racing rubber bracelet. Jason is wound around him, head on his chest â entwining their legs, wearing much the same thing. Salim makes him take the cap off when it digs into his skin a little too much. Jason is still running the track through in his mind. In 24 hours they will still be less than halfway through. Heâll maybe be a stint in the car down, watching nervously on the monitors⌠and not just for Cadillac but for Yalla too⌠âStop it.â Jason jumps, looking up to Salim, âHuh?â âStop overthinking, Jason.â âIâm-â â[I know you are.]â âItâs a big race, even though Iâve done it a few times before.â âI know, but you need to relax and get some rest tonightâŚâ Salim looks to the clock, âOh.â âLate?â âMhmâŚâ He nudges Jason gently, untangling them, âoff you go, get some sleep.â âI could just sleep here.â Salimâs look is enough for Jason not to even grin through the joke, and he sighs, âFine.â The Iraqi sees him to the door, leaning over to give Jason a sweet kiss goodnight. âSleep well, najmi.â âOh?â Jasonâs look is playful, âIâm not American Boy, today?â âIt can be arranged.â Salim kisses him again, âSee you out on track.â âGoodnight, Salim. Catch me on your inside.â Jason sticks the tip off his tongue out. Salim rolls his eyes, before pushing Jason out of the door, âIn your dreams.â
***
Twenty four hours later and Salim knows that Jason must be finding it easier to breathe. He didnât even need to get in the car for Cadillac to breeze to the front. And when Jason was in it, he pushed it to one hell of a lead. Salim isnât even sure a safety car will neutralise this for long â if Cadillac can keep it word perfect overnight. Salim has just got back from doing his second stint - sunset to late night. Heâll be getting out there again in the early morning. Jasonâs second stint is coming up next. When the air and the track is cool.
Yalla Speed are in the battle for the last podium place, keeping and holding forth, they switch seemingly endlessly, depending on pit stop rotations, with the current third placed car. Salim isnât sure theyâll keep it up as Zain and Tariq start tiring during the night. But heâll keep an eye on them. He heads up for dinner and by the time heâs finished, Jason is back in the car. Heâs overtaking the lower classes of cars for fun. Sweeping that Cadillac around every corner as if he and the car are one; creating showers of sparks as the floor scrapes the curbs: itâs beautiful.
Zain comes to watch for a little before he goes to get ready for his own stint â Salim makes sure to see his son off for his first few hours of night running. He knows how happy Zain will be to get even a few minutes running around this track in the dark with Jason at his bestâŚ
It's a short stint for the American; Salim thinks itâs probably to keep that lead as comfortable as possible. Jasonâs speed has widened that gap even more, preventing any unnecessary risks from being taken during the night. Salim waits for the driver change to be announced on his screen and gets up from his seat in the team motorhome â making his way to his ready room he texts Jason: My place? Race on TV?
Jason knocks about 20 minutes later; heâs still in his overalls, but the team shirt at least lets Salim know heâs changed. âYou watching your kid?â Jason blows out a breath, âSome fucking wild shit going on out there, as usual⌠Heâs doing well to keep out of trouble.â Salim takes his place back on his couch, legs crossed and arms folded, âI swear if someone tries anythingâŚâ âCan we both beat them up?â Jason grins, opening Salimâs fridge and helping himself to some water. âYouâre in the car next, huh?â ââŚYeahâŚâ Salim opens his arms out so Jason can slide into them, âYou must be tired after pushing the car so hard?â âUh, whatâs happening in the car is a Cadillac secret and I will have to push you off the track if I tell you how itâs all looking.â Salim chuckles, there would have been a time when Jason would have done that for no reason at all. âWell, I certainly donât want that!â Jason settles, taking his cap off and placing it beside them, sipping the water as he studies the order and timings. âYou taking sunrise?â He yawns through his sentence and Salim mutes the TV. âYou should get some rest.â âYou too as youâre in the car next; I got a couple stints I can sleep through. I want to keep an eye on Zain at the very least.â Salim blows out a breath, âIâve maybe got two hours. Iâm not taking sunrise and sunset.â Jason nods, âBrutal.â Before he closes his eyes âIf I gotta sleep so do youâŚâ Salim shakes his head and wraps Jasonâs body in his, âAlright, but this is the only time you get to tell me what to do.â It's a short nap, but itâs much needed. When Salim wakes up Jason has wiggled free of his arms and is sitting at the end of the couch, cross legged watching the muted TV. âSo, get this! Zain just made a super sweet move to get up to second, then the newly demoted team fumbled the stop. Major crash has changed the GT grid completely. Itâs chaos out there.â âWeâre second?â Even when heâs still a little sleepy Salim canât help his breathless excitement. He takes a breath to keep steady â thereâs a long way to go. âI think youâll bump down when Yalla does the driver change to you, but you can get it back no problem, sweetheart.â He points to the screen, âBut that is on merit.â âSafety cars?â âMhm. Thatâs allowed the change.â âNeutralised your lead?â Jason points to the gap again, âThat car is running on rails. Fucking incredible what sheâs doing right now.â He was right â despite the chaos of the last 90 minutes or so, Merwin had managed to pull that gap back. Soon they would change back to Nick, and then Jason would take sunrise. Even with the safety car they had already lapped most of the field; now they would begin hunting the Hypercars down. Salim rubs his eyes, before sitting up. He places a kiss to the back of Jasonâs neck â making the American sigh gently and turn to kiss back. âThank you for looking out for them, Habibi.â â âS a new one, tooâŚâ Jason grins, âWhatâs that mean?â âMaybe Iâll tell you, if you win!â Salim winks, before rushing to get changed.
Jason returns to his own garage to keep an eye on Salimâs timings when the switch happens. Heâs got his headphones on and heâs drifting in and out of sleep. There to offer moral support to Nick and Merwin in the brief time he has with them both before he faces the challenge of sunrise himself.
12 hours are gone, all they need to do is keep this up. If both cars keep going the way they are, they can celebrate on the podium together at one of the greatest races there has ever been. Jasonâs heart is racing just thinking about it.
Maybe the greatest dreams arenât meant to be. And with 30 minutes to go; Jason finds himself faced with a big decision. Itâs been 23 hours and 30 minutes of giving everything. Everyone in this team. They are in first place. Itâs comfortable; they just have to nurse her to the end and fighting exhaustion and weaving through the rest of the grid is hard enough without Jason having to face a moral dilemma of his own.
He's in control of his own destiny. And heâs not about to let fate be so cruel.
Salimâs car was running in second place. Itâs been hard fought to get there â and their car has the battle scars to prove it. Jason is on track to lap almost every car: itâs just the podium that he hasnât lapped. Two cars. Salim is one of them: and Jason is very excited to do that. They havenât been on the track at the same time for long this race, so getting to race side by side for a few corners and act like they are battling â even if Salim has to give way to him, technically, is going to be amazing. Something just for them. Which is why when Jason sees Salimâs car beached in the gravel; his heart almost stops. Jason slows for the yellow, staring, what the fuck happened!? Cars have given up with much less of the race to run, but after all that? If itâs the engine or the electrics, Jason isnât even sure how heâs supposed to console his partner on something like that⌠He gets on the radio, âRachel, what happened to Yalla?â âThey caused the yellow, why?â âYeah, I can see that, Iâm driving through it! Are they okay?!â Rachel doesnât answer him. âRachel!?â When Jason doesnât receive an answer he tries again, âRachel, is he okay? Is Salim okay?â She sounds more annoyed that she has to tell him than anything else: âThey were bumped, Jason, it got beached! Heâs probably fine.â The yellows turn to green, and Jason doesnât press on the accelerator, his fingers hover over the gear paddles and he thinks. âJason, youâre in a green sector now!â
But Jason is overthinking â bumped off track and theyâll tumble down the order. That is if they donât have damage thatâs bad enough they canât continue, or if the bump was caused because the car had some failure. Please, they had come this far⌠Donât let it be the car now. âJASON!!!!â Finally, the yelling in his ear pierces his thoughts. âWhat!?â âGREEN!!! It means GO FAST!!!â Jason has half a mind to slam on the brakes, âIs he okay!?â âJason for god sake we donât have time to-â âI swear to God, Rach, I will stop this car and find out myself.â There is two beats of silence, and her voice is shaking with rage, âYou are in first place at the 24 hours of fucking Le Mans, Jason Kolchek. Donât you dare!â He taps the brake to show heâs serious and he can hear her anger uptick in just her sigh. Heâll pay for it later he knows, but Jason is not making decisions with his head right now. âIs he okay?â âFor fuckâŚâ Her radio cuts momentarily to mask her frustrations, âFine, weâll fucking check! Jesus!â Jason smirks to himself, and as if to hold up his end of the bargain, presses his foot to the accelerator instead. Heâs sure heâll have just given everyone in the Cadillac higher ups a heart attack. Rachel comes back on, âHeâs fine, theyâre just beached. Now I need you to keep going Jason! Faster, you lost us time!!â Jason knows sheâs trying to make it sound like the now second place is right on their tail and he knows they certainly arenât. âWhere are they?â âWhat?â âWhat position are Yalla? Howâs the car?â Rachel cuts out again and he knows itâs so she can curse at him as loud as she wants. âCar looks fine Jason; itâs still running theyâre in the process of moving it back onto the track. Theyâve slipped to fourth, though.â Jason nods to himself, and puts more pressure on his acceleration. âIâm gonâ put in the lap of my life.â With that he shuts off his radio communication. Jason has a plan, he just hopes Salim catches on.
He's flying down the Mulsanne straight; focused on nothing but the road â weaving out at every appropriate moment for a GT or LMP2 car, Jason isnât kidding. Once that yellow is lifted heâs going for the fastest lap and heâs taking Salim with him. If he times this right, Jason can catch that car at just the right moment, and draft Salim all the way to third place. Salim just has to follow â closely. It puts their Hypercar at risk of overheating. And Jason must be careful to not go for a gap Salim canât follow him into.
But Jasonâs timing has to be perfect.
âJason, are you trying to go for fastest lap?â âYellow lifted?â âYeah he just got to the pit.â Thatâs exactly what Jason wants to hear. âThen hell yeah I am!â Even if it isnât this lap, Jason is determined to get his favourite bonus record on the track too.
He slows up at the final chicanes; lining up the perfect exit to shoot for this lap. But first, he has to check: âRachel are they out of the pit box?â âWho!?â â..Whoâd ya think!?â She sighs, âWhy the hell is it so impor-â She stops talking, âYeah, theyâre on the run up to pit exit.â âOkay, watch this.â He knows Rachel has her head in her hands; Jason takes as much curb as he dares and then accelerates; he watches for the red, white and black as it exits the pit lane and begins climbing to the Dunlop bridge. Perfect!
They probably have new tires, fuel, and are ready to go to the end with a bit more duct tape. Jason flashes his lights as he follows them under the bridge to let Salim know heâs passing. The car in forth has to relent, Jason is on the lead lap, heâs leading the race. âCâmon SalimâŚâ He prays that somehow the Iraqi knows him well enough to know what heâs trying to do.
This is what Jason had just been dreaming of, only now it was so much more high stakes than a couple of fun corners of sweeping around this circuit together. Jason swerves in behind the Yalla car, for a second the Cadillac gains a new burst of speed in the slip stream. He doesnât need to do this, but he hopes Salim gets the hint. Jason flashes again and then moves back out â he lets Salim take the racing line and passes on the outside. Thatâs not optimal for the fastest lap but it lets Salim gain traction for this to work. âOkayâŚâ Jason mutters to himself, âlet me tow you up to third⌠We can do this.â As he passes the red car he glances over; the window is hard to see through; especially with the helmet not exactly giving him room enough to completely turn. Salim is at least looking in his mirrors.
Jason hasnât had time to discuss this: itâs on the fly. âSalim youâre a helluva lot smarter than meâŚâ Jason accelerates again, eyes forward, âletâs go!â The Cadillac pulls away in clean air before Jason turns sharply back into the path of Yalla Speed. He can bet Salim is cursing; itâs too close, but itâs going to give Salim exactly what he needs to catch on. Jasonâs acceleration is gentle and he keeps an eye on the mirror to make sure that Salim is still in it. And then he sees the way it clicks, Salim follows through every micromovement Jason makes with the car. âThatâs it!â Jason can feel himself grinning, weaving through gaps between the other cars that are big enough for both to go through. It takes him a couple of laps â but then he really feels like heâs flying. âJason, are you towing them!?â Rachel comes over the radio. âOh shit!â Jason acts surprised, âIs that damn car keeping up with me!?â âI am going to throw you off that podium myself, Jason Kolchek!â âLove you too, Rachel!â He laughs. Finally, Jason finds himself back where he was before â just up the road is the car in third place. Thereâs traffic but if Salim can just keep followingâŚ
Jason is careful; he knows heâs kissing goodbye to the fastest laps; but he still has time. Thereâs maybe 10 minutes on the clock. If heâs very fast heâs looking at 3, maybe 4 laps. Thatâs time â and each lap he sheds fuel and weight. This baby is primed to get him that lap. He trusts her. She can do it. They finally reach the last car providing traffic.
And the car in third has to let Jason through. Thereâs no arguments.
Jason breaks left around the final lapped car and is surprised to see Salim go right; he knows what has to be done now. This is his moment. They go three wide as they move onto the straight; not ideal. He can envision Rachel screaming at him. But the imagined excitement of the crowd watching this is ringing in his ears⌠Heâs grinning again.
The speed of the Cadillac gets Jason through first, and Salim comes up on his right as they race down the straight together. Jason canât help laughing. This is how it should be; this is maybe the most fun heâs ever had racing. Salim letâs Jason pull out for his move on the car in third; flashing his lights in thanks. These last few laps will be his opportunity to pull the move off Jason has just gifted him.
He lets Jason go.
Jason is flying again: fuelled by joy and adrenaline. The clock definitely has enough for a couple more laps as he crosses the line. âThatâs fastest lap Jason!â âTHAT!?â Heâs surprised both at that attempt and Rachelâs joy. âHold on, I got one more in me!â âLetâs do it!â She encourages.
He's supposed to just bring her home, he knows that. His eyes constantly darting to everything on his console and dash. Two more laps and she could have a well deserved rest. But his head and his heart are both rushing. Heâs going to break his own fastest lap. He needs to feel it this time. Jason runs the curbs â cutting so fine he knows the stewards are going to be all over it for track limits. His foot is to the floor for as long as possible and his braking is late. Way too late in some cases. But he trusts the machine under him. He crosses the line again. Two minutes to go, the next time he crosses heâll have won it. âThatâs a new fastest lap Jason!â âFUCK YES IT IS!â âNow can you please just bring it home?â âWhere are-â âDonât you fucking dare!â Jason bites his tongue this time, but Rachel sounds amused as she comes over the radio again, âSalim has got them to third. Itâs one hell of a fight, they keep trying to come back. But heâs pulling away. Whatever fucking insane thing you were trying. It worked.â Jason shuts his radio off; but he is screaming in joy.
The chequered flag starts waving and all Jason can hear in his ears is the screaming of his team. He thinks heâs crying a bit but heâs not going to admit it. The Cadillac guys are all on the pit wall waving their flags â a sea of blue along the top of the catch fence, soon joined by everyone else seeing their finishing cars across the line. Heâs looking for the Yalla ones in particular, of course. The cool down lap is exhausting: all Jasonâs adrenaline is shot. Heâs having to take care and wave to all the marshals now stepping onto the track, along with the other cars on their cool down laps flashing their lights in congratulations. All this as well as keeping all the deltaâs exactly where Rachel is instructing him to put them and sound half-coherent to Ericâs congratulatory radio message.
He slows around the last two corners, Nick and Merwin grinning triumphantly waiting on the finishing line for him. Nick clutching the chequered flag. Jason slows the car to a stop; breathing the biggest sigh of relief. His teammates run to him, prizing open the doors and mounting the car. Itâs then he can hear the cheering of the crowd. Thatâs for them. And Nick grabs his shoulders, shaking him and slapping the top of his helmet. âYou did it! You crazy son of a bitch! We just won Le Mans!!!â âFirst time for an American manufacturer since the 60s man! WOOOO!â Merwin yells from Jasonâs other side. Jason canât do much more right now than laugh. Nick hands him the flag; and Jason drives them all very carefully down the start/finish straight, turning into the pit lane. Itâs a sea of other teams and photographers congratulating them. When he parks up Nick and Merwin practically yank him out of the car. They start trying to lift him off the ground but Jason isnât having it. âWILL YOU TWO GIVE ME A MINUTE!?!â They put him down, and he struggles to take his helmet off efficiently; watching them both grow impatient. Once Jason frees himself, they start piling on him again. Stuffing the Le Mans winners cap onto his head before lifting him up onto their shoulders for the photographs. Then they start jumping, and Jason has to hold on for dear life and hope he isnât going to be sick.
The first few interviews are a blur and Jason feels too tired and delirious, heâs not even sure what heâs saying. (Clarice will surely painfully remind him later). The hugs from his team make things better: Eric, Rachel and Clarice have all worked hard over this week too, and they deserve this as much as the drivers. The mechanics too.
Before they are led away to the podium Jason runs back to the car. He kneels in front of her and rubs the hood. âYa did it baby! You just won us Le Mans!â He kisses her. âThank you!â
Jason thinks he pours three bottles of water over his head instead of drinking them waiting up in the cool down room. Itâs so warm; else heâs expending what little energy he has left as unwanted heat. The Porsche boys in second place are chatting amongst themselves: good group of guys. Technically the only team Jason didnât catch, and he isnât surprised. They are fast too. They are all waiting for P3 to come up the stairs. Rachel said it was Salim, but what if something happened? A last minute penalty? What if the car they were chasing got them back at the line? He's anxious. Heâs excited.
Salim, Zain and Tariq almost have to sprint up the stairs, too busy celebrating this podium with their team to realise they actually had to be elsewhere to celebrate with the other teams too. Heâs out of breath by the time he gets to the top. But he makes a beeline to the Cadillac trio. âJASON!!â This is far too important. His American is almost glowing when he sees Salim striding across the small room to him. Jason pushes through his teammates and is about to open his mouth when Salim pulls him into the tightest embrace Jason thinks heâs ever felt. âThank you. You didnât have to do that, but you did.â He pulls back. Grabbing Jasonâs face and grinning. âYouâre a reckless idiot Jason Kolchek! We have a podium because of you!â Jason laughs, âYouâre kidding right? You did the hard work yourselv-â Jason doesnât have the opportunity to finish his sentence before he finds himself set upon by the kids too. Grabbing him as much as Nick and Merwin had and ruffling his hair. âAH! Okay! Fuck! I can only take so much weight!!!â
The podium is like Spa on steroids. Jason is celebrating with his friends, his teammates, his lover⌠He couldnât ask for more than this. Not at this race. And yet heâs won it. He thinks he must cheer louder than anyone else when the Yalla team are called, and he knows by the look on Salimâs face when they shake hands that the cheer was as reciprocated. (Zain and Tariq make sure to slap him as hard as they can so Jasonâs hand is numb by the end of it.) The Cadillac boys want to put Jason in the middle, but he wants to stand on the right side. Just for a minute. Just let him have this. Salim and he look at each other, beaming, before he shoves Jason playfully. This is about your team! and Jason gets reshuffled into the middle.  Heâs very careful with his champagne spray around the Iraqi team. Dar has even joined them up here. Itâs a big moment. Everyone is respectful; but he doesnât think a single person comes off that podium anything less than soaked through.
There are another three sets of podiums, but Jason is exhausted. He knows the team celebrations are going to go on crazy long. âJust gimmie a minute, I need to fucking change!â Heâs not about to sit around for hours in a sticky champagne soaked suit. He takes a big gulp, before he hands the bottle to Clarice. âIf anyone else drinks that Iâll kill âem.â âDonât worry hot shot, Iâll take good care of her.â He gives her a wink, before jogging off to his own trailer.
Jason stands outside it for a moment, and blows out a breath. Grinning to himself, he places he head against it. He lets out an insane laugh. How the hell had that just happened?
Damn!
He hears footsteps behind him, and there is a tap on his shoulder before he finds himself turned around and shoved up against the door. Salimâs lips are already on his and heâs wasting no time trying to get into Jasonâs mouth. Jason moans against the kiss; he has no energy to resist⌠at first. Until he realises whatâs happening and panics, pulling back: âS-Salim! Itâs Champagne!â The Iraqi doesnât seem to care. In that moment Salim simply wants Jasonâs lips on his too bad. Jason starts panting against the kiss; heâs trying to struggle himself away at the same time as wanting everything Salim is giving him. He manages to force the door to his trailer open and they both stumble inside. Now they are out of the public eye, Salimâs hands are on his waist, his hips, they pull Jasonâs champagne soaked body closer. He releases Jasonâs lips and starts kissing his neck but thatâs just as bad. âSalim you canât be doing this! You canât drink!â ââŚI can do tawbah laterâŚâ âI am not letting you do this for me!â Jason realises that the more he resists the more Salim doubles down and, in the end, Jason closes his eyes and tilts his head back to give Salim more access to his throat. Salim smirks against his skin: â[Not protesting so much now Iâm kissing you like this?]â Jason is breathless, âIâm tempted to agree, even though I have no idea what you just said!â Salim laughs before kissing his neck. â[That sounds more like my American boyâŚ]â Jason whines as Salim claims his lips again, âGod, you sound so beautiful when you talk like that.â Salim grins, kissing Jason slower, this one is more sensual and when he pulls back this time, he gives Jason breathing room. âCongratulations, Habibi. You just won Le Mans.â Jasonâs smile slowly becomes a smirk, but his pretty brown eyes are full of stars: âYou said if I did, youâd tell me what that meant.â âI think you already know.â Salim pulls Jason to his lips once more.
Despite arguing that they had time, they both agree to get changed and meet later tonight. Jason knows the celebration between them will surely be worth the wait.
He makes his way back to the paddock himself, adorned in comfortable Cadillac team gear thatâs a little too big for him, and fresh out of the shower. Heâs sure heâll be getting drenched in champagne again before the day is out but at least heâs clean for now. The winners cap is still firmly stuck to his head. He thinks this one will be in his rotation for quite some time.
As he walks towards the loudest garage in the paddock â of course, Cadillac would party way too hard and loud and be an American stereotype tonight. Jason was ready for it! â he passes the Yalla motorhome.
Behind the glass he can see Salim, Zain and Tariq all around a table eating and talking excitedly, one of the Le Mans trophies sitting pride of place at the head of the table. Every so often a team member will come and clap them on the back. They are all clearly celebrating, thereâs music and laughter emanating a little louder every time the front door slides open. This podium is just as unpreceded for them as everything else they do. They are a team of firsts; they always will be. Jasonâs smile grows the more he sees as he continues his walk. Until his eyes wander to the balcony; where he freezes a little, eyes darting quickly away, then guiltily looking back to their team principal. Dar Basri is standing getting some fresh air looking out at the rest of the paddock. He clocks Jason immediately; and theyâre locked in an awkward (at least on Jasonâs part) stare off for a few seconds. Jason wonders if he should mention heâs not about to try to get on the stand and hang out with them this time. But before he gets far enough into that, something changes. Darâs usually hard stare and stony look - reserved specifically for Jason - breaks into a small smile, and he gives Jason a deep nod. The American blinks but he knows he didnât imagine it. Come to think of it had he ever seen Dar smile?! Jasonâs smile grows wider, and he reciprocates the gesture. They stare at each other for another few seconds before Jason turns to the rowdy Cadillac stand. He better get going. He nods to Dar again with a little shrug, ah⌠Americans!, before he continues on his journey.
Jason is definitely drunk when he gets back to his motorhome. He thinks he could be seeing double. Heâs had too much junk food and way too much alcohol. But that had been the best celebration party. He is carrying his empty champagne bottle â that Clarice had definitely half drunk when she gave it back to him, considering how flushed her cheeks were and the level of the liquid. But heâd let her off â she had to put up with and spin all his bullshit positively every single season. He places it down on the side, before he steadies himself. Oh GeezâŚÂ There is a knock on the door and he stumbles back to it. Salim must have been listening out for him, because heâs standing on the other side of it. He hops up the steps, taking Jason back in his arms. Salim nuzzles his face, before kissing his forehead and nose and finally his lips. âNow, where were we.â This time Jason is somehow able to be firmer with his push back. If Salim had done his tawbah then this was only going to make him do it again. âOhâŚÂ waitâŚÂ can you jusâ⌠talk to me in⌠Arabic for aâŚâ He trails completely, before refocusing on his partner, âItâs sexy. Youâre sexy.â The sentence isnât exactly coherent, and Salim pulls back in understanding. Salim raises an eyebrow, âJust how much did you drink, Jason?â âToo much!â He nods, aware his speech is now slurring, âShit⌠âm sorry.â âI think I better stay anywayâŚâ Salim guides Jason back to the bedroom, he chuckles, âI better look after you and that hangover youâre bound to have in the morning.â âMhmâŚâ Jason nods. â[But]âŚâ Salim smiles, helping Jason to get ready for bed, â[I can at least talk to you in Arabic, until you fall asleepâŚ]â Jason is beaming, âCelebrate another time?â â[You got it, Habibi.] If youâre good, maybe even tomorrow.â They still had another day here of packing up. The celebrations werenât going to be ending for quite some time for either party.
Jason lies back and Salim removes his hat, placing it on his bedside table before smoothing out his hair. He shakes his head; how the hell did he get himself involved with such a mess?! Salim knew he wouldnât change it for the world, though.
Jasonâs hand shoots out just as Salim thought he was about to drift off. âWait, youâre staying, right?â âI promise. Iâm not going anywhere.â âOkayâŚâ Jason yawns through the word and closes his eyes again, his grip around Salimâs wrist loosens, but the Iraqi stays very still at the end of the bed watching him. âMaybe Iâll even make you breakfast in the morning.â
Yeah⌠Jason would like that very much.
***
After Le Mans, the dynamic between the two teams shifts again. Maybe not necessarily for the banter and the rivalry, but for Jason himself. Specifically, Dar starts letting Jason hang around without glaring at him.  There is a respect there that Jason has earned, and heâs doing his best to maintain that. However, that still doesnât stop him from practically wandering into the garage and motorhome of Yalla Speed as if heâs part of the team. Salim has warned him on being too casual about it, but this is Jason so heâs not really listeningâŚ
This visit is pre-race. Jason has learned this is the quietest time in the motorhome as everyone is back in the garage getting everything ready for the start of the race. Whereas the drivers are all up in their ready rooms, at least he hopes so.
Zainâs door is open as Jason passes it, and he pauses for what he sees in his peripheral vision.
Stacked on Zainâs table are what Jason assumes to be his course books, some of the words on the spines are a little big for Jason, but they all seem to be Mythology focused. The boy himself is sat on the floor in his overalls, eyes closed, feet and hands out in front of him and heâs driving. Jason watches the fingers on the gear shifts; the turn of the wheel, different for every corner of the circuit, the acceleration and braking harder and softer in places too. Jason tries to follow exactly where he is on the track, thinking about it in his own head. But Zain is clearly thinking about this differently to Jason. Every time Jason thinks he has a rhythm with him, Zain will do something unexpected. Jason raises an eyebrow but canât help but he impressed. He leans against the doorframe, arms folded, and waits for Zain to cross the start/finish line. Zain goes for the lap again, and Jason canât help but laugh softly. Zain eyes snap open to the sound. âOh! Hey Jason!â Jason nods towards his hands and feet as Zain slowly lowers them: âAre you⌠driving? With all the shifts? In your head!?â âOh yeah, I do this with every track! See!â He picks up the sheets of paper that Jason now realises are beside him; Jason canât read the language but Zainâs little diagram arrows seem to indicate pace, braking distance and exactly where to take the corners. They are not where Jason would take them. Heâs thinking about every track completely differently. Jason knows how surprised he looks but itâs because of what Salim said. Salim told Jason that Zain wanted to be fast - like Jason was. And Jason had been trying to coach Zain that way. But this? Zain was the technical driver on the team. That was his gift. Finding things no one else was doing and capitalizing on it. By the look on Jasonâs face Zain explains drift racing - popular and taking off back in Iraq, Tariq and he had really started here, before they were allowed into the GTs - and still did some on the side in the off season. Their skills had come from their teamwork in that. And it was something no one else on the grid had, hence Zain using it as his secret weapon here. Jason doesnât think that everything on Zainâs papers can be learned from drift racing in Baghdad. He smiles, âThatâs amazing. I never woulda thought to do that.â He gestures to the drawings. âKeep it up, kiddo!â Before he leans out of the door, âBefore I interrupt ya too much, is your dad around?â Zain almost smirks, despite the pride on his face at Jasonâs words. Of course Jason is here for his father. âYeah, heâs probably getting ready in his room, Jason.â âThanks man!â Jason waves Zain off, and strolls down the corridor to Salimâs room.
The door is shut but Jason knocks as heâs opening it. Salim is indeed inside, but only half dressed, race suit zipped up to his middle he hasnât pulled his fireproof shirt on yet. Jason whistles. Salim half turns, eyes narrowing, pretending to be annoyed. Jason shuts the door behind him with his foot and it slams. For a moment he regrets it, knowing Zain definitely heard that. âArenât your team going to miss you?â Jason acts appalled that thatâs the first thing his significant other has said. âNoooo⌠my briefing isnât for a little while, Iâve got time.â Salim raises an eyebrow, now fully turning around. âOh? And you think I have time? I need to prep, to warm up!â Jason gives him no answer as his eyes wander gratuitously. The look is plain on his face: Jason is happy to be his warm up. Salim sighs heavily, throwing a towel over Jasonâs head as he grabs his fireproofs and slides them on. â[You need to cool off, youâve got a race coming up.]â Jason scrambles to remove the towel and pouts; despite the fact that what Salim is wearing is still skin tight. âThatâs not fair.â âLife isnât. American boy.â Salim closes the gap between them, pushing Jason gently up against the wall, he removes the Cadillac Racing cap heâs wearing, running his hands through Jasonâs hair. Jason is the one to pull Salim in by his collar and claim his lips this time.
Theyâre supposed to have learned not to be loud, but Jason kicking the door shut has already ruined that moment. Salim slides his hands out of Jasonâs hair and down his chest: Jason is also wearing his flameproofs and Salim likes them for the same reason Jason likes them on him. His fingertips trace all over Jasonâs musculature. He smirks against the deepening kiss as he feels Jason shudder softly under his fingertips. Salim moves his hands around to Jasonâs lower back â Jason shuffles his body away from the wall linking his arms around Salimâs shoulders. Clearly theyâre thinking the same thing again. Salim guides his hands down and over Jasonâs ass. He squeezes, which makes the American jolt. (Even though Salim knows Jason is expecting this.) The Iraqi breaks the kiss only to laugh, which causes Jason to pull him back in, nipping his lip in return. Salim keeps moving his hands to the upper part of Jasonâs thighs and then lifts. The American uses his upper body strength to aid in pulling his body up, wrapping his legs around Salimâs waist. Jasonâs arms lock around Salimâs shoulders and, while still kissing, Salim guides them back to his table, sitting Jason on top. The American pulls them both down, and Salim struggles to remain on his feet. How long does Jason have before his briefing!? Jason clearly thinks he has time, hands scrambling to pull Salimâs shirt back over his head; thighs locking around Salimâs hips. âJason!â Salim growls against his lips, pulling back to kiss at the base of his ear beside his jaw. âIâm supposed to be getting dressed not undressed.â The American stills until Salim looks at him, but his hands are still tangled in Salimâs shirt. âAw? You got time for me!â And then he grins. And the more Salim frowns, the more Jason grins back.
Eventually the Iraqi rolls his eyes, âNajmi, you are impossible.â
Jason is still lying on Salimâs table â a little dazed â as Salim changes into a second fireproof. No thanks to Jason clawing at him and sweat (He guesses he is warmed up but heâs not about to give Jason the satisfaction of credit). This one is white, and somehow drives Jason a little more insane than the black one Salim usually wears. He groans desperately as his eyes roam over Salimâs back. âHabibi, Iâm not having sex with you with my son in the next room and thin walls. You have no patience.â Jasonâs feet bump against the table legs in annoyance, which makes Salim turn to him. As soon as he has the Iraqiâs attention however, Jason stops pouting.
Salim can already see the damage heâs done becoming slowly visible on Jasonâs chest and stomach. Thank God his shirt is going to get tucked into his overalls. âWhat?â Jasonâs big brown eyes just keep staring at him with absolute desire. Salim shakes his head, stepping forward and kissing Jason gently. He watches the American run his tongue over his lips afterwards, savouring it. Sometimes to Salim, this whole relationship is insane. This is Americaâs Sweetheart. This is Cadillacâs star driver. Their darling. Their All American Golden Boy. That team and country adore this man. And somehow heâs the one getting Jason hot and bothered like this â Jason is practically begging him for more than heâs already getting. Jason is making out with him. Sometimes itâs funny to Salim that heâs got Jason at all â heâs seen Jasonâs female fans too; at every race in the stands and at signing sessions. (He doesnât blame them, Jason is objectively the prettiest man Salim has ever seen and a damn good racer too). He's their star. Najmi. My star. Jason is Salimâs too. And here he is again; coming to see Salim even when heâs meant to be in a Cadillac back room resting and prepping for his briefing. He's their factory driver. The first one they signed on to their Hypercar program after his stunning performances with Corvette. Jason is the leader of the team; even if he insists thatâs not the case. Yet heâs pining for the touch of an Iraqi man 9 years his senior.
This isnât lost on Salim at all.
Salim mentions this as he steps back; it gets a rise out of Jason when he says it teasingly. Of course he does, Jason is so easy to get a reaction from. He pushes himself up from the table onto his elbows, eyes narrowing. Remark from his mouth sharp, aggressive. Salim just laughs, wandering across the room to where he discarded Jasonâs cap earlier, he returns it to the racers head, adjusting Jasonâs race suit. The American still looks annoyed, but Salim kisses that right off. âNow, get to your briefing, before they find you here!â Jason pulls him back in to his lips, itâs messy. He pants, âGood luck in the race!â Salim brushes their noses together, âMhm. Iâll try not to beat you too bad.â âIn your dreams!â Jason slips down from the table, pulling his cap down over his eyes he starts for the door.
But he pauses as he opens it and turns back. âYou said Zain wanted to be fast.â âHe does.â Salim has heard Zain say a million times how much he wants to be as quick as Jason is. âWhy?â Jason turns, eyebrow raised, âHis forte is technical driving, look at him.â He gestures to Zainâs room. Luckily the door is shut now, and music is playing from behind it. âYou see it too.â Salimâs voice is measured. âHeâs looking at the wrong driver.â âWell, maybe you ought to tell him that.â Jason gives a shrug, then changes his mind and nods. If thatâs permission, he will.
He raises his hand in goodbye, in return Salim presses two fingers to his lips before extending them to his American boy. Jason takes off back to Cadillac with a smile.
Clarice tries his ready room once more, âJason! Donât be late again, my god!â Nothing! She tries the door and its unlocked; expecting to walk in and see the man with headphones on and way too loud music, Clarice opens the door to no one. The room is empty. âOH, Jason!â Sheâs frustrated, âWhere the fuck-!â âYou too, huh?â She is interrupted by Nick, who has suddenly appeared leaning against the wall outside. âYou seen him?â âNo, not since he went in there. But I knocked earlier and it was the same. Heâs clearly not back.â Clarice shakes her head, âEric is going to kill me; so Iâm going to kill him.â Nick muses, âHeâs barely here anymore. Jason is nowhere. He doesnât hang out with us⌠Heâs missing half the time. And whenever you ask, he has the perfect excuseâŚâ Clarice folds her arms and closes the door, before leaning next to Nick. She thinks. ââŚHeâs spending a lot of time alone, donât you think?â âYou really think heâs alone?â Clarice looks to Nick and they share what they think is a brain wave. âHEY guys! Am I late!?â They both turn to watch Jason jogging down the hallway, beaming smile on his face. They both know that isnât there on accident. That also isnât Jasonâs usual expression.
They look at each other again. Neither of them say anything, but they both think they know exactly where heâs been.
***
It's late night, and Salim is sitting outside on the front steps of the hotel. The race weekend is over; team personal are coming in and out of the hotel, socialising and having a night out before everyone started to fly home.
Salim needs some air and to think; the hotel is fronted by a massive driveway and valet; at this point itâs so late the restaurant and pool areas are closed. Thereâs nowhere else for him to sit besides his room and heâs not staying cooped up in there.
Jason and a group of the Cadillac engineers and drivers are laughing together as they walk up the drive. They climb the steps and pass him; he knows Jason lets his glance over linger â although Salim barely gives him attention in return. They disappear inside and things are quiet again, for about ten minutes.
âHey.â Jasonâs voice is soft as he carefully descends back to where Salim is, âSomeone as gorgeous as you shouldnât be out here on his lonesome.â Salim barely laughs, which makes Jason pause. âHoly SHIT! Salim are you smoking?â The next few steps are urgent, and Jason stops just behinds Salimâs left shoulder. Salim holds his hand up; the cigarette is between his fingers, but itâs not lit. Heâd declined that when heâd asked for one from another teamâs mechanics. âNo.â âDo you smoke?â Jason sits beside him, clearly concerned. âUsed to. I quit when Zain was littleâŚâ He passes it between his fingers, âSometimes holding one⌠just helps with the stress.â âYouâre stressed?â Jason shuffles slightly to the side, but not closer to Salim, rather to give him breathing space, ââŚDo you wanna talk about it? Itâs okay if notâŚâ Jason looks up to the sky, âI can just sit with you for a bit, if that helps.â Salim places the cigarette down on the step between them and groans, rubbing his hands over his face. Where to begin? He also looks up at the stars. Theyâre in a relationship; and there should be no secrets. No matter how big this is. He glances around â they are definitely alone. âOur team is running out of money, Jason. We are barely going to be able to scrape through this season.â He takes a deep breath, âWithout a win, the whole thing will collapse.â Jasonâs eyes fly wide and he looks over. Where the hell did that come from!? He has a million questions, but he keeps quiet until Salim is finished. âWe might keep float a little longer with that money but honestlyâŚâ Salim shakes his head, âIf we donât look for a buyer⌠if the investors pull itâŚâ He canât even finish the sentence. Jason dips his body, so he leans a little closer to Salim, who is now sitting hunched over his knees; âShit⌠baby, when did they tell you this?â âAfter todayâs race.â Salim glances up at him. âWho else knows?â âEveryone. Itâs only within the team for now but itâs only a matter of time until itâs leaked.â Jason swears he wonât be one. âShit⌠I canât even imagineâŚâ Jason also rubs a hand over his face, âHowâs Zain? âŚTariq?â âWell thatâs what matters; Jason. I could retire; Iâm not getting any younger in this sport, but the kids⌠theyâre just getting started. Unless someone picks them upâŚâ Salimâs eyebrows knot together and his fist clench and unclench â heâs anxious ââŚI canât watch their dreams end like this. Especially not my son.â Jason reaches out and rubs his partners back; he wishes he had something better he could say than âsorryâ. It didnât feel enough.
âDid they say why? Itâs seems so suddenâŚ!â He knows heâs musing. But Salim seems to have an answer. He straightens. âAccording to them the crashes of last season cost too much money. Thatâs before this season!â Jason grimaces, suddenly feeling the gut punch of the initial one he caused in qualifying. âThe kids donât pull the sponsorship, or at least the kind of money they want to see from sponsors and having two young and inexperienced drivers means our placing in the standings isnât favourable.â Salim gives a shrug.
Jason can hardly talk; heâs backed by a factory team with racing history that has been doing this for years. Salim is driving in a small independent team that depends so much more on love and dedication and all the money it can scrape together to just survive, let alone succeed. Even podiums werenât cutting it anymore.
What Yalla currently lacked was consistency. The stakeholders apparently werenât ready to wait for that.
Jason canât help but be a little irate for his partner: âHey what!? Theyâre the ones who wanted to move the kids up! Zain and Tariq coulda done a few more years in GT - LMP2 even - and honed their skills before they pulled them up here. This is on them!â
Salimâs expression is two-fold; on the one hand heâs grateful for Jasonâs support, on the other, heâs not entirely sure Jason can understand it.
âWell, they arenât going to take the blame, are they?â
Jason doesnât know what else to do, but the look on Salimâs face is killing him. For a moment he doesnât even consider they are out in a public space as he pulls Salim into a hug. The Iraqi doesnât seem to care in the moment ether, winding his arms around Jason in return. âI just need Zain to find something Jason⌠I canât watch him forced off the grid like this.â
âYour team will get through this, Salim, I promise. Zain ainât goinâ nowhere.â Jason rubs his back soothingly, but heâs already thinking. With Zainâs skills, heâs not going to stay teamless for long if it goes that way.
That could represent problems for him too. Jason has an idea; one heâs sure Salim will baulk at if he mentions it now.
The difficultly will be getting Eric King on sideâŚ
***
Eric watches Jasonâs truck pull into the parking lot from his office window.
What the hell is he doing here?
Jason never turns up to Cadillac Racing HQ unscheduled unless heâs got something to try on the SIM; Jason has his own SIM.
Eric canât help but be a little curious, watching his star driver waltz towards the lobby. He exits his office, and by the time he gets down to the reception area Jason has just finished signing in; although heâs leaning over the counter, chin propped in his palms and joking with the receptionist.
Eric clears his throat, âAm I interrupting something?â
Jason straightens, but not as if heâs just been caught flirting. âDamn, she didnât even have to call you.â
Eric is quick to piece it together, âYouâre here for me?â
âYeah!â
âI thought you were here forâŚâ Eric is halfway to pointing over his shoulder in the direction of the SIM rig but, drops his hand. âWhat is it?â
âI think itâs better if we go to your office.â
Ericâs eyes narrow. This seems suspicious. Everyone has been a little on edge about Jason lately. Cadillac Racingâs executives have heard about how much heâs hanging with the Yalla Speed guys. Theyâve wanted constant reassurance that Jason is still their man. Thereâs been talk of throwing money at him before itâs even worth panicking over.
Maybe the time to panic is nowâŚ
âSureâŚâ Ericâs response is measured, and he beckons Jason to follow him. His driver almost hurries him along and Eric has barely shut the door to his office when Jason starts blurting things Eric would rather not hear.
âWe need to talk about Yalla!â
âClearly.â Eric stands, hands in his pockets and looking to Jason expectantly.
Jason is oblivious: âI need to talk to you because shit is about to go down in the paddock and if we donât do something someone else will.â
Ericâs eyebrows quirk, âThis isnât about you...?â
âME!?â But it all makes sense, the way Clarice had talked after the first time Salim had kissed him. Heâs friendly with the drivers⌠heâs constantly waltzing into their garage⌠Still, Jason has loyalty here and it irks him that itâs being questioned. âThe FUCK Eric! No! Iâm not goinâ--â Jason shakes his head to stop himself from getting on a tangent, âNo! This is about them!â
âWhat about them?â
âWe need to BUY them!â
Eric leaves a stunned silence.Â
Jason lurches his body forward to prompt an answer.
âJason. What the fuck are you talking about?â
âThe team, itâs about to fold. The investors are going to back out, they have no money. Itâs a win or goodbye.â
Eric is surprised, âJason thatâsâŚâ
âIf we donât jump on this Eric, someone else is going to take those drivers and put them in better teams. Think about it: Salim has experience, heâs steady. Tariq and Zain, high potential kids who would fit into anyoneâs young driver program. You really want them partnering with someone like Estre in the future? I donât think you do if you can help it!â
Eric shakes his head, going for the door as if to show him out: âJason, this is insaneâŚâ
âNO! Eric, will you just listen! Ferrari â two cars, Porsche â two cars, Toyota â two damn cars! Isnât it about time Cadillac did the same thing!?â
âJason, do you have ANY idea how that would look!? Weâre American, in case you didnât notice they are an Iraqi outfit! You really wanna dig all that up!?â
âItâs history!â
âItâs not just history Jason. Itâs how itâs going to look â to the board, to both sets of fans.â
âWell, isnât that your fucking job!? To convince them this is a good thing?â
âJasonâŚâ
âFine. Fine.â Jason bit his lips together, looking heavenward for a minute. Salim, forgive me. âIf not the team, you cannot let Zain go. Not with the way he thinks about tracks. Thatâs technical ability I havenât seen anywhere else, not like that. You make him a young factory driver; you are set for the future of this team. Letting him go would be a big mistake Eric and you know it.â
Jason hates himself for saying it: but maybe there is no other way. And Salim was worried about his son most of all.
âIt isnât that simpleâŚâ
Jason doesnât understand what his problem is, âYou have talked them into it before.â
âYeah, for you at Spa last year. You begged me about that and now youâre going to beg me about this? Jason, do you understand how hard it was for me to get them to let you drive an Italian car? Youâre talking about taking over an Iraqi team, Jason! Do you have ANY idea how hard thatâs going to be.â
âHow fucking hard will it be for them to underst-â
âYouâre a Cadillac driver for Godâs sake, Jason, think for a second.â
Jason was thinking, just not with his head.
He stands firm, âIf we donât do this, someone else will. Then youâll have wished you listened to me and acted on it.â
Eric places his head in his hands. This man was impulsive and headstrong. And now he was giving Eric a headache.
âNo.â
âEric!!!â
âI canât, Jason. Iâm sorry.â
Jasonâs whole expression changes, he looks to the floor. Somewhere between angry and upset. âCan you just think about it. Please?â
Eric sighs, âWho even told you this?!â
âA⌠Friend.â
The team principal looks momentarily perplexed, âWhat friends do you have in that team who would tell you that?â
Jason looks affronted, head tipped, âYou sayinâ I donât have friends?â
There is half a minute of silence, Ericâs eerie look seems to stare right through him. âSalim told you.â
Jason is affronted, his voice rises, âIâm not USING names Eric! I donât want this going anywhere out of here. As far as you know itâs an anonymous tip off!â
âSo youâre protecting him now?â
âI havenât said anything. On purpose.â But Jason straightens, folding his arms. If Eric didnât think Jason wouldnât dare, it would almost be threatening. âBut yeah, I damn well would protect him.â
Eric leaves another thirty second pause before he turns and opens the door, âOut.â
âEric!â
âOut, Jason.â His driver isnât going to throw a fit. Although Jason looks halfway to it. He glares at Eric, stomping towards the exit. But just as he passes, Eric speaks again. âIâm going to need some time with this one.â
Jason doesnât say thank you, but with the way his expression changes, he doesnât need to.
After that he does spend a little bit of time in the SIM, but itâs pointless. Heâs still annoyed that it isnât a straight answer. Itâs not a yes, even if itâs a maybe.
Heâs wrecked the car more times within the last hour than heâs ever done before SIM or otherwise. Because all Jason can think of is how heâs letting Salim down.
Eric watches from the doorway as Jason curses again, watching the car slide off the track into the gravel and then the barrier. Thank God this was only a simulation.
So Jason Kolchek did care about something then; other than winning and his own ego.
That was certainly an interesting revelation.
***
And then they do win. The penultimate race of the season. And Jason would rather celebrate with them than his own team, who have just won the Drivers and Constructors titles. It must be a massive relief. It is for Jason himself; Salim will be on the grid next year as a driver â not just someone who is there to support his son⌠or his partner. If thatâs what Salim would even want to do. Jason can see how heâd be equally happy with living a quiet life back in London far away from the track. His heart twists; Jason can make long distance work currently, it doesnât mean he likes itâŚ
Jasonâs feelings probably have nothing on Yallaâs. And despite the fact that Nick quite literally sent him down here, he stays at the back of the celebration. The white and blue race suit still stands out against the bold red, white and black for the team heâs tagging along with. Itâs about the one time Jason blesses his shorter stature.
He leans back against the pit wall, watching the drivers for the third and second places file out onto the podium. His cheering is subdued as Salim, Zain and Tariq take the stage. His smile is huge â he can feel it â but heâs only clapping. To be honest his yells would have been drowned out by the team around him anyway. Jason isnât here to be noticed or be the centre of attention â they are.
Jason takes his cap off for the Iraqi national anthem, and watches the way the three of them stand together. This moment is so unprecedented that it doesnât even look like they know what theyâre doing. And heâs not about to embarrass them by suggesting there are tears: but they are certainly emotional.
The bottles they use arenât of Champagne this time; probably due to the team that just won. But itâs still as respectful from the other two teams as expected. The six other drivers almost make a celebratory arch with their drinks; before using what is left to absolutely soak the Yalla boys. Jason laughs to himself: it feels like payback for all the times Salim has had terrific aim at Jason. At least the lack of alcohol allows the three of them to actually drink this time. Watching the other teams all congratulate Salim though? Makes Jason wish heâd pushed a little more all race. He wishes he was up there too. They would never have this moment again. Jason shakes the thought away. Sure, he wants to be clinking bottles with the guys right now, hugging them and patting them on the back and getting to share that first win podium but it doesnât matter what he wants. This wasnât about him.
He's just so damn proud of them. They had beaten all the odds. They had proven themselves. And now they got to stay.
He remains against the wall as the Porsche and Ferrari teams start to move out, and finds himself joined by the Yalla team principal. âImpressed?â Jason huffs a laugh, âItâs impressive. But theyâve been fighting hard. Your whole team did. All season. Had to come at some point.â He looks across to Dar, who is watching him carefully. Jason cracks a smile, âYeah Iâm really fuckinâ impressed. Congratulations!â His eyes flick back up to Zain and Tariq who are now dangling over the edge of the podium balcony dropping their bottles to their engineers below. âLookinâ forward to fighting with you again next year.â  Jason pushes himself away from the wall and turns to hold his hand out to Dar. âYouâve got one hell of a team, sir.â Dar hesitates for a moment, before shaking Jasonâs hand. He gives that same respectful nod that Jason remembers from Le Mans. But says nothing more.
Jasonâs eyes flick back up to the podium, the kids are still up there, energy up from the high of the win they are jumping and singing, but Salim is nowhere to be seen. Jason knows heâs got heâs own debrief to get to â let alone Cadillacâs own celebrations. He gives a nod back, turning to go back to the Cadillac garage. As he does so he notices the crowd of Yalla Speed staff ripple, and Salim is walking through the middle of them. Jason canât help but beam watching this happen; but he keeps walking. Until Salim catches his eye and winks. Jason knew what that meant. See you later.
Before Jason rendezvous with his team back at the motorhome, he stops by the garage; by this time their car has been scrutineered and she sits gleaming proudly despite the fact that itâs getting dark. The mechanics are just packing away. And Jason mentions to them that they better get their asses to the celebration quick. He doesnât want anyone to miss this: they all worked so hard.
Jason places a hand on her back wing, skimming it down to her tail, along her side, across his name on top of the door, over the front wheel arch â fingertips lingering on her front, where he stops at the badge. âYou did it, pretty girl.â He crouches in front of her. âYou won us the Goddamn Championship!â He places his arms out gently on her hood and tilts his head so his cheek meets cold carbon fiber, âYou fought so hard all season and you never gave up on us. This one is yours, baby.â
Jason pulls back and smiles fondly: next year will mean new upgrades and a new chassis even if the paint job is the same. Sheâll never be this car for him again. Jason hopes she gets pride of place: displayed front and centre for any visitor to Cadillacâs racing headquarters. She deserved that more than anything.
He leans in again, touching his lips to her â just as he had done in Le Mans.
âThank you for everything.â
For a couple of hours, once heâs back with the crew, Jason plays the part of good driver, good teammate. Itâs not that heâs not having a good time. Itâs not that his whole heart isnât in this. As he makes charismatic speeches and celebrates both championships with them this is the BEST heâs ever felt. But in the back of his mind, heâs getting more and more excited for what comes after. There had been so much to celebrate tonight. It was going to be a great evening.
Starting this celebrating with his best friend, who had just clinched them the Championships; could there be anything better? He wants to give this team everything he has. Theyâve given him everything. Including these championships.
Of course as soon as he thinks he can sneak out, he goes straight to Salimâs trailer. Itâs open and Jason walks straight in. Salim is sitting on the couch staring at the First place trophy and medal in front of him. Heâs rubbing his hands together. It looks like he can barely fathom this is happening. Jason isnât surprised.
âYou did it!â Jason announced, running across the room and flopping on the couch next to him, âYou fucking WON!â He grabs Salimâs shoulders, âBaby, youâre gonna be on the grid next year! You all saved the team together!â
Jason realises, horrifically, that his own joy is very misplaced. Because Salim isnât responding happily at all. In fact, he looks dejected. His hands clench and he sighs, shaking his head. Jasonâs entire face falls, âSalimâŚ?â âItâs not enough. This team is going under, Jason. We have one more race.â He turns to his partner and he looks hopeless. âWh- why?â âThere justâŚâ He presses his lips together, âThere just isnât the money. Even with this⌠They were going to tell us today anyway. The win wasâŚÂ unexpected. But when they run the finances again the prize money justâŚâ Jason reaches out, hand rubbing Salimâs back, before he moves it up to his neck, caressing his thumb over Salimâs jaw line. Once again, sorry isnât anywhere near enough. His brain quickly moves to what he knows is Salimâs main concern, âShit⌠do the boys know?!â Salim nods, placing his hand delicately over Jasonâs, âDar, Tariq, Zain⌠myself. Weâll tell the rest later. Not right now, they need to have this oneâŚâ His eyes glance over to the trophy. âIâm sorry, Jason⌠I know you came here to celebrate. I really want to celebrate but, IâŚâ âNo, no, noâŚâ Jason shakes his head, âItâs okayâŚâ He pushes the brim of his cap up, gently pushing his forehead against Salimâs. âFuck, baby Iâm so sorryâŚâ âThereâs nothing you can do, Jason.â
Jason begs to differ but heâs not about to say that yet. He wraps his arms around Salimâs shoulders, holding him tight. Salim rubs his back, âYou should go back to your team. I need to get back to mine too; while there is something to celebrate.â Jason pulls back and shakes his head, his laugh is more for the irony: âWeâre going to have something worth celebrating when it happens at some point, right?â Salim snorts, âMaybe itâll be easier when Iâm off the grid.â Jason doesnât want to entertain the thought. Hates that Salim has to think that way right now. He doesnât dare agree, at most he shrugs. Before he leans forward and kisses his partner.
âCongratulations, Habibi. You won. And theyâre never going to fucking take that from you.â
***
Jason does not go back to celebrating with the team, instead he grabs Ericâs arm the second he thinks he can get away with it, and drags him over into a corner. âJason, whatever youâre about to say-â âLook I have no idea whether youâve even talked to the board. Or if you thought that you wouldnât even need to worry after this race. Cuz I sure thought they were fucking safe. But we need to move NOW, Eric!â ââŚWhat are you talking about, they just won?â âItâs not enough.â ââŚThatâs where you went off to.â Eric puts his hands on his hips and shakes his head, though Jason is slightly perplexed. He didnât realised heâd been missed. âDid you talk to the board?â âNever you mind what I did.â Eric pats him on the shoulder, âIâll be back.â With that, Eric disappears to the back of the motorhome, and Jason is left standing confused.
By now the building is warm, with all the bodies and all the drinks flowing, the Cadillac team are starting to move the party to the rooftop for the fresh air. And they arenât the only team that has decided to do so. Opposite them, Yalla are partying too.
Jason spends a couple of minutes making sure heâs seen before he grabs a beer and heads to the edge of the balcony. Now heâs conflicted about the celebrations. This should be the best night of the season for both of them. Now they stand with the prospect of only one of them being on the grid next year. How can Jason possibly celebrate that?
He lifts his eyes from the paddock below to the Yalla Speed motorhome and almost double takes. Salim is standing opposite him, beer bottle (0.0% Jason can guess) in his hand. Like Jason he is standing away from the main celebration. Probably having the same thought process. Jason straightens from where heâs been leaning and raises his bottle to Salim. Although the distance between the two motorhomes means they canât cheers; Salim raises his too with a little smile, and they drink at the same time.
Jason looks over to the group of Iraqiâs celebrating: it looks like a fun time, maybe a little rowdy. He can bet Zain and Tariq are right in the middle of it. Kids being kids. He wonders if this is Salimâs scene at all: or if it was once, when he was their age. Jason makes a mental note to ask. When his eyes trail back to Salimâs, Salim has also turned to see what Jason is watching. When he looks back to his partner Salim merely laughs. Jason is sure heâs thinking the same thing.
They continue to stare at each other and drink together over the expanse for a little while. Jason is happy to get to âcelebrateâ with Salim in this way at least. Even if he wishes the Iraqi was right beside him instead.
Eventually Jasonâs eyes drop to the rest of the Yalla building. Something else catches his attention, and Jason leans himself slightly over the balcony to get a better look. Despite the fact that the whole bottom floor of the building is privacy glass; opaque at best and too reflective especially in sunlight. Now itâs dark and lights are on, Jason can see through a little better. On the floors above, where the staircase wraps around to lead onto the roof are the drivers own prep spaces and a number of offices. The glass here is much easier to see through; and with the dazzlingly bright lights, Jason canât help but notice Eric King and Dar Basri in heated discussion. âHoly shit!â Jason says to himself, propping himself on his elbow he takes casual sips of his beer as he watches. There a lot of back and forth â and itâs very hard to tell who has the power. What Jason wouldnât give to be in that room right now. He glances up; Salim is now craning his neck over the side of his own motorhome to try and figure out what is taking Jasonâs attention, but the angle is all wrong. When he looks up and gives a shrug, Jason simply raises his eyebrows before taking another sip of beer.
He isnât sure how long he watches for, but eventually the two men stand up. And then they shake hands. Jasonâs heart leaps. He has no idea what thatâs for â but he can only hope the best. His knuckles are turning white as he grips the balcony. Watching the two team principals laugh together for a moment, before they shake hands again, and Dar sees Eric out.
This time when Salim and Jason look down onto the paddock below, they watch Eric walk out of one building and across into the other. Jason barely lets himself catch Salimâs eyes; although itâs obvious that his partner has questions. Instead, Jason leaves the balcony, and placing his finished beer on a side table he rushes downstairs.
Salim watches him go; slightly puzzled. Jason must have spotted and been watching Eric below. But what was Eric doing over here? Salim shakes his head âAmericansâŚâ before staring at the drink heâs still nursing.
His team principal has suddenly joined him, leaning backwards on the railing Dar sighs deeply. Salim looks across to him, â[Let me guess, you want my advice?]â Theyâd been friends a long time, Salim would like to think he knew Dar fairly well at this point. â[If someone gave you a way out of a predicament but it stood against everything you believed, what would you do?]â Salimâs eyebrows furrow; he looks to his drink once more. â[Try me.]â Dar turns himself to the side, away from the party and lowers his voice, â[Cadillac want to take the team over.]â If Salim was drinking he would have choked, â[Sorry?]â â[Thatâs what I said.]â â[The Americans, want us?]â Salim canât help but be shocked, â[Itâs barely been a few hours since we found out. The news didnât break did it!?]â â[Iâm sure thereâs been leaks somewhere, Salim. Weâve known it could happen a lot longer than that.]â For a moment Salim forgets all about the fact he leaked it to his partner himself, and he scowls at the thought of someone from the team telling anyone else. â[âŚAnd Cadillacâs deal is⌠good?]â Heâs trying not to sound hopeful, he knows Dar wonât like that. â[Does it matter, theyâre American.]â Salimâs eyes drift over Darâs shoulder to Zain and Tariq â still wrapped up in the celebrations. â[For those kids I would-]â â[Kid.]â Salimâs gaze runs back to Darâs, and his team principal gives a shrug. â[Seems Tariq has been shopping himself around anyway. He already has a contract secure if something happens to us.]â Salim canât help but raise his drink to that, and takes a sip. â[Smart kid.]â â[Itâs a good deal, Salim, but itâsâŚ]â
Salim nods, he understands what that means. No more small underdog rewriting the rules for itself⌠instead the big American corporates are in charge⌠And thatâs just the start of the problems.
As Dar starts to explain the deal to him in more detail, Salimâs eyes drift over to the Cadillac motorhome. From here he can see Jasonâs ready room. The American is half dressed to leave already; jeans on as he fumbles with his shirt to pull it over his head. Salim smiles as his eyes trace up Jasonâs spine. His partner is clearly distracted by someone who is just out of Salimâs sight, as every so often Jason will glance up in that direction as if heâs talking. Eventually he manages to get the shirt over his head and his cap goes back on. He gesticulates as if heâs still conversing, and then he waves them off before moving to pack his bag.
Salim continues to watch him as Dar concludes. â[So, what would you do!?]â Salim shakes his head, â[What else can we do? If we want to be here next year. If we want to race⌠Weâll have to make a deal with someone. Why not this yearâs winners?]â Salim turns and puts his hand on Darâs shoulder, â[The decision is yours, my friend. But, ZainâŚ]â Salim nods his head behind him. If the decision was his heâd have snapped Cadillacâs hand off just to make sure Zain wasnât without a seat. And Dar knows that. Dar nods, then looks across to the Cadillac motorhome himself, shaking his head with a frustrated sigh. â[Americans.]â
Salim nods again absentmindedly, eyes trailing back to Jasonâs room just in time to watch the lights flick off.
Mhm.

Jason has just about finished getting ready for bed when there is a knock at his hotel room door. He groans and hangs his head, before his eyes flick up to watch his grimace in the bathroom mirror. If this is Merwin and Joey trying to drag him down to the hotel room bar, heâs giving them a firm No. (At least thatâs what heâs swearing to himself).
He stares at himself in the mirror for long enough that the knock becomes more urgent. Jason looks down to his shirt and boxers. FuckinââŚ
He doesnât check, just opens the door ready to give his friends an unimpressed look. Preparing himself to tell them to leave, rather than force him to get dressed and get drunk.
Even if he had checked first, Jason would not have expected to come face to face with his partner. âSalim!? What the fuck are you-!?â Salim doesnât answer, he just walks forward. Pushing the door shut behind him, Salim collects Jasonâs body against his in a sensual kiss. The Americanâs initial complaint becomes a quiet moan as Salim lifts him from the floor, and Jason wraps his legs around Salimâs waist. âIâm sorryâŚâ the Iraqi murmurs quietly. âIâm sorry.â Jason pulls back slightly, eyebrow raised, âThe fuck you gotta be sorry for!?â âI said we couldnât celebrateâŚâ Salim moves one of his hands so it settles against Jasonâs cheek, and his smile is painfully apologetic. âHabibi, of course we can celebrate! IâŚÂ want to celebrate with you. We just won the race â you just won the Championship! I-â Jasonâs smile is nothing if not teasing, âYou got nothinâ to be sorry for. Although, if youâre so insistent on apologisinâ, Iâd say this was workinââŚâ Salim walks them hurriedly over to the bed, causing Jason to wrap himself around him tighter. They collapse in a tangle of limbs and fingertips touching everything they can possibly reach.
Jason already panting hard against the travel of Salimâs hands and lips against his skin. He says Salimâs name breathlessly.
Yeah, he wants to celebrate too.

Itâs a couple of weeks later that it becomes official. The motorsport news is rife with it the minute the post drops. Jason is standing in Salimâs London apartment kitchen, coffee in one hand, phone in the other, reading the post over and over.
The picture is poignant. Background in completely sunset orange as the car crests the curves of Le Mans up to the Dunlop bridge. Taillights aglow. He thinks that the Arabic at the top of the picture must say âthank you.â
The text underneath it, translated, insists that although this is the end of the team as their fans know it on the grid, itâs NOT the end of Yalla Speed Motorsport. The comments from the fans are as devastating as Jason would expect. But there is some excitement for the future too⌠itâs something he supposes the whole team have to cling onto themselves. Whatever is going down with Cadillac still isnât entirely clear; thatâs all gone far beyond even Ericâs reach in negotiations now.
He takes another sip of coffee. Whatever does happen now, he sure is going to miss this team on the grid. Itâs been the best rivalry. Without them, he doesnât have the partner he does now. âSpeak of theâŚâ Salimâs arms snake around Jasonâs torso, pulling him close. His hands skim under Jasonâs shirt, brushing over his abs and stomach. The American is glad his hands are warm at least. Salim leans his head on Jasonâs shoulder, eyeing Jasonâs phone. âKinda sad to think this had to happen⌠I canât believe they really pulled youâŚâ Jason muses, biting his bottom lip in his frown. âMmmâŚâ Salim adjusts his position and kisses Jasonâs shoulder, âIs this about the time I say we should talk about what you did?â Jasonâs coffee is halfway to his lips again, but he pauses. The little smile making its way across his face becomes sheepish.
OhâŚÂ Heâs probably going to pay for this.

The season is over. Jason should be chilling on a beach somewhere a little too hot, disconnecting for a couple of weeks and unwinding from the season.
Instead heâs stuck in Cadillac racing headquarters in a meeting room practically on lockdown. The Yalla Speed social post has been a talking point; mostly because Cadillac is the next step now.
Fans are upset but excited and Tariq has already announced his team for next season â heâs moving into Aston Martinâs new Hypercar program. Itâs a good prospect; he gets to establish himself at a brand new team. That leaves Zain on lockdown and Salim has an account, but itâs barely used. Heâs the last person on the team anyone would look to for any information. Which almost makes him being the source of this happening ironic. Everyone is here, but there are multiple meetings going on and everyone is scattered around the campus. Itâs allowed everyone the chance to socialise, to know names and faces and roles even if there is no finalisation yet. After all, itâs not just the drivers that have come, Cadillac have brought over the whole team, engineers, mechanicsâŚÂ everyone. Thereâs going to be a big mix up. And Jason wonders how stable the team can really be next year: will it more be about rebirth and growth. Can they really defend a championship when they will be so busy redefining themselves? Right now the standings are the furthest thing from his mind.
Theyâve been here two days already and thereâs one more to go. This is about the first time everyone has been in a room together since this started. No one is allowed a phone. Jason thinks they are being ridiculous â but he can hardly complain.
He can bet Cadillac were not the only ones bidding for Yalla when the news broke. Yet they still ended up here. Zain has immediately been drafted into the Cadillac Young Driver Program â something the team have created just for him; Jason isnât surprised given how vocal he was about that, but it will help Zain grow fast. He has access to far more here than heâs been exposed to before.
There has to be six drivers between the two cars: Salim and Zain are brand new, but Joey is also getting promoted up to full time driver from his reserve role. Theyâre finally calling him over from IMSA. And the two cars mean a new livery is on the cards. The blue car is still on the table, but now thereâs a yellow one in the mix. Jason is surprised it isnât red. But he can bet that Iraqi flag is getting in somewhere once each car is finalised. Even the lineups arenât chosen yet, which is why they are all sitting in here.
Jason assumes there will be a shake up, having three new drivers in one car is asking for trouble. Salim might be experienced and steady but this is a brand new car to get used to. He canât be expected to lead right from the off. But which of Jason, Nick and Merwin are going to want to give up the car that just won both championships? This is not the most riveting meeting heâs ever been in; itâs nothing theyâve not heard before in every other meeting theyâve been sitting here for. Then they get told they are moving into more rooms. Except Jason. Jason is told to stay.
He tries not to sigh too loudly as he sinks back into his chair. Now heâs the only driver in the room, stuck with Eric and some of the race team executives. So heâs in trouble then.
Eric settles into the chair at the far end of the table opposite Jason and folds his arms; staring him down. âSo, Jason. This is what you wanted.â Jasonâs eyes narrow, âI thought it was worth looking into, what of it?â He knows he has to be measured here. âWell, we got it.â Clearly. âUh huh. And now you have two great drivers to fit into our model⌠but they seem to be being welcomed. Itâs going to be a lot to get used to, right?â âItâs not just drivers Jason, we have to fit in a new engineering team, race engineers, social media⌠everyoneâs coming over.â Salim knew that by now, but Jason remembered him being particularly vocal about those concerns. âItâs a lot. And we have just a couple of months to get everything running smoothly.â âIâm sorry, now youâre acting like Iâve caused a massive issue!?â âNo, Jason.â Eric laughs, but itâs really a warning to shut up. âBut youâre the lead driver here. Youâre the team lead. Youâre going to be doing the heavy lifting.â Eric turns to the screen, where the two liveries still sit, âTime to put your money where your mouth is.â Jason considers what heâs saying for a moment. ââŚHow can I lead a two car team by myself?â Eric turns back, âThat isnât what Iâm saying.â Jasonâs eyes widen, âYouâre---â He looks around the room, âYouâre giving me both Salim and Zain?!â âWell,â Eric steeples his fingers, âThe preference of team should be yours. But that would be our preference.â He smiles, but itâs not friendly, âYou know why they chose Cadillac, Jason? You know how many people we had to bid against?â Jason isnât sure he cares how many. Jason knows the worst thing on the list for Cadillac is that theyâre American. Besides, heâs sure Eric is about to provide the answer. And Eric does, pointing across the table, âYou.â âMe!?â Jason canât help being a little surprised. âNothing to do with fastest man on the grid. Iâm just as surprised.â This time Ericâs smile is a little warmer, âApparently, youâve shown exceptional respect and professionalism this year. I mean I didnât dare ask for evidence!â The room laughs, but Jason knows: Salim had Darâs ear. There was that nod in Le Mans⌠there was Spa last season⌠The podium in Fuji. âSo youâre trying to give the team what they want?â âIt might just be you need to be the mediator between the two teams to make this workâŚâ âSteady, technicalâŚÂ fast.â Jason canât help but almost smirk as he ticks that partnership off, âBut you want me to teach them everything.â âLike I said, you brought us this. Now you do the work. Think you can handle it? The pressure?â Jason nods, he could thrive in pressure. âItâs a tested formula. Spa 24 Hours?â He leans back, grinning, hands behind his head, âJust tell me when I start!â
The answer to that was early the next morning. And when Jason turns up to the room with a coffee, Salim, Zain and Dar of all people are already sitting in the room waiting for him. Jason tips his head and points at Yallaâs old team principal, Eric is keeping his job, and while Jason is sure Dar wouldnât be happy losing a role, Jason expected heâd be whisked into something back office or an executive role. âWhat the hell are you doing here man!?â Besides, he hasnât seen Dar for the past two days. Eric shakes his head: off to a great start. âHeâs part of the team Jason.â âWell, obviously.â Jason shoots Eric a âduh!â look but then gestures back, âYou started in the back with the engineers and designers right, you returning to that? Make her a little faster for us?â Dar shakes his head, âYouâll see me at the track, Jason.â Jason tips his head, âWhat like⌠Sporting Director? You gonna be at all the races?â Eric smirks, âThink a little closer to home, Jason.â Jason frowns and then double takes, glad he hadnât decided to take a sip of coffee at that moment or he might have been choking on it: âYou gotta be fucking with me.â Dar simply laughs, shaking his head. âYou went from Team Principal toâŚâ Oh, he was so screwed, âour race engineer?â That gets everyone laughing and Jason is wondering if heâs going to enjoy Rachel or Dar yelling at him more. Maybe heâd have to get Salim to teach him some Arabic. Thank God they had the off season for things like that. (If they ever got out of these damn meetings.) âAll Iâm sayinâ is good luck and you should probably talk to Rachel about me!â From the look on Darâs face, heâd already been heeding that advice.
He takes a sip of coffee, clapping Zain on the back and settling into the chair next to Salim.
âWell, now everyone is hereâŚâ Eric stands up, âWe can get started.â Jason checks his watch, muttering to himself, âNot my fault everyone else was fuckinâ earlyâŚâ
The first discussion is the livery. Although itâs not a discussion. Itâs been decided; and apparently not by Jason.
Heâs of course ecstatic to see his beloved blue car up on screen. Jason is known for this car; the blue has always been his signature. Even at Corvette. Itâs present in his race logo, his helmet. Blue is his favourite colour. He would have given it up for the two men sitting either side of him, but they had the opposite idea. Eric explains that when given the choice, Salim and Zain immediately asked for the blue for their beloved American boy. Jason acts like heâs leaning his chin on his hand, hand over his mouth and cheeks: but really, itâs to stop everyone from seeing how much heâs beaming and checking heâs not getting too hot. He owes them: heâs not sure how heâs supposed to say thank you for that.
But the blue car has an alteration to her colours from this year, also. The Cadillac stripe down the side evokes the badge: usually shifting, shattered lines in black, red and gold. They are still present; but where it breaks into shards across her fin, Jason realises they are red, white and black. He doesnât miss the little âŮŮاâ - Yalla! that had been stylised as their team logo. Itâs been worked into the livery beautifully, whoever had designed this had done some nice work. He folds his arms, and he canât help but laugh even though no one has said it out loud yet, he turns to Salim, grinning, remembering their conversation from Spa last year. âSo, are you guys ever driving anything without an Iraqi flag on?!â Salimâs smile is sweetly sarcastic. âItâs the least you could give us while you still get to drive her in blue.â
Jason smiles back, and itâs grateful. Salim is right. It is the least he can do.
The rest of the meeting explains how they expect the season to go. With two brand new line ups Cadillac are looking for a total reset. Until they know how everyone is going to perform there is no number one car. Even though Jason is the team lead. Theyâve also given he and Zain a list of things to work on together â although Jason knows he already has some ideas of his own. He wonders just how ready he is to teach his partners kid in a professional context. Thereâs a difference between giving advice and it being his job. But the way Zain looks at Jason gives him the upmost confidence; Zain trusts him and believes in him. And Jason isnât about to let him down, or Salim. Salim will have his back too; he still has much he can offer his son despite the car being new, and Jason is going to be grateful for all the support he can get on this. It's going to be one hell of a season.
Jason tries not to wonder too much if the focus is survival. But he doubts the team is expecting a repeat of this season even if they want it. Luckily for the three of them, itâs going to be easier to gel when they already have so much rapport. Salim and his relationship is still their business only. And theyâre still going to clash while theyâre teammates. Maybe even more now theyâre in the same damn car. But theyâre also going to have a bond and understanding that no other driver pair on the grid has: and thatâs before they involve Zain. If he can really hone his own skills this year, the three of them will be a lethal combination.
The WEC better watch itâs back.
Eventually there is soft knock on the door, and in walks Clarice and the ex-Yalla team press officer. Jason was grateful that Clarice was about to have help to positively spin all his PR mishaps now.
Eric nods to them, and finishes up his general overview comments. âNow, Iâll leave Clarice with you all so you can figure out how you want to word this to the pressâŚâ
He says his goodbyes and exits, leaving the four of them to turn their attention to her. Jason isnât surprised that they want to get ahead of this and get everyoneâs quotes to show a unified front.
Yalla Speed made it clear they were coming back as something else. But there were enough issues Eric had already pointed out to Jason at the time about them being an all-American outfit. He realises he should be grateful that controversy didnât take them out of the running all together, else Salim might not be sitting right next to him now.
Clarice sat across the table from them, sighing. Clearly sheâs expecting some issues; and Jason almost smirks.
Well⌠she doesnât know what she doesnât know.
She lays out all her things, and their press officer sits beside her, ready to take just as many notes. Jason feels strangely relaxed for someone whose words are about to come under PR scrutiny.
Once sheâs ready, she looks directly at Salim and Jason: her brown eyes staring at them hard, almost piercing. Clarice isnât here to mess around.
âYou two have had trouble in the past, both on and off track. Thatâs pretty well known. Are you going to be okay working like this?â
Zain and Dar give each other the same look across the table; to say itâs a knowing look could be an understatement. But Salim and Jason donât even notice.
There is a moment of silence before Salim and Jason turn to each other. For a second Jason allows himself to get utterly lost in the look on his loverâs face, and his eyes. Salim is amused; itâs a look on the verge of âso should we just tell them?â Although they both know they arenât ready for that. Jason has been so lucky with this man so far, he never in his wildest dreams would think Salim would have shared the same feelings, let alone acted on them. Theyâd survived long distance, an insane season and were still going strong.
And now they got to be partners in every sense of the word. Whatever this season brings, they will face it together. And beat it, too.
Hands entwine and feet touch under the table and they both smile.
âI think weâll be just fine.â
Favor
Salim had never been to anything like a Renaissance Fair before, but Zain was so enthusiastic about going that of course Salim agreed to join him. He even agreed to get into the spirit by dressing up. Zain assured him that the cream-colored shirt was supposed to be that long on him. Otherwise, it wasn't that different from regular clothing; it just had the belt around the outside of the shirt.
He and Zain were listening to a bard play an authentic-looking instrument when he spotted two men locked in a mock sword fight.
âLet's go over there next,â he suggested, pointing.
Unfortunately, the fight ended just as he and Zain got there. Both of the men wore leather armor over their clothes for the fight. One of them had their back to him, but turned, and Salim's mouth fell open.
âJason?â
It was definitely him, though he looked so different without his signature hat and his tattoos covered. The leather armor and gauntlets suited him, and those pants... Salim brought his eyes back up to Jason's face.
âGood morrow, sirs,â Jason greeted. âAre you enjoying the fair?â
âAh... yes.â Salim should try to close his mouth, but he was still too stunned. He would never have expected to see Jason, of all people, here and in costume. And trying to sound like someone from the era, too, though his accent completely ruined it. âAre... you?â
âI am to take part in the tournament later this afternoon,â Jason said. His eyes flicked to Salim's face and held his gaze. Then, he reached for Salim's hand, lifting it up and lightly pressing a kiss to his knuckles. âSir, would you do me the honor of granting me your favor?â
âWhat?â Salim hadn't understood a word of that. His brain had short-circuited the moment he felt Jason's lips touch his skin. His hand felt like it was burning, but in a very pleasant way.
[He wants you to give him something, Baba,] Zain explained. He was grinning, his eyes bright. [Something he can wear in the tournament, to show that you're supporting him.]
âOh. Of course! I'd be happy to support you, Jason.â He patted his pockets, looking for something. He hadn't brought anything with him. With an apologetic shrug, he offered his belt. âWill this do?â
âI will wear it with honor,â Jason promised, immediately looping it around his waist. âWill you take something of mine in return, fair lord?â
âI...â The heat was spreading to Salim's face. This whole thing was very bizarre, but he admired Jason's commitment. And he couldn't deny there was some appeal to exchanging tokens for each other to wear. âYes, I will... Sir Jason.â
Jason took a strip of cloth out of his pocket. Salim recognized it as the shemagh Jason had been wearing during their trip through the Sumerian ruins.
âI can't believe you still have that,â Salim remarked with a chuckle. He tied it around his arm.
âSome parts of that day were worth holding onto,â Jason answered. He reached out to help knot the shemagh in place. When it was secured, he took Salim's hand again. âI shall be your shield and triumph, fair lord.â
âI... I'm sure... you will.â
Jason kissed his hand again and wandered away, leaving Salim a little dazed. He couldn't wait for the tournament. He would cheer Jason on, his heart hammering wildly every time his eye caught his belt strapped on Jason's costume. And when he wonâthere was no doubt Jason wouldâSalim might try to encourage Jason's lips to go higher than Salim's hand.
