do u ever human-ify objects that are armless into humans that are armless? i notice you mostly give them arms or roboprosthetics and not stumps and im curious ur reasons why :P
I have given my human designs no arms before!
i dont do it for every single armless character though, mostly cause i want to try to have creative alternatives for armless character designs rather then just making them armless as humans.
but here are (i think) all of the characters i've designed so far with no arms. Even then there are characters like Nickel that only has his forearm gone, or like One who does not have arms but she uses magic as a replacement, or my golfball and tennis ball who just have robot arms.
But here are all of my characters i've designed that dont have arms in canon but i still gave them arms! plus cabby and Subway Seat from hfjONE who don't have legs. For toy Train i even gave him legs too even tho in canon he just has a mouth!
I want to try to explain why i pick some characters with no arms and some with, but honestly it's just kinda vibe based. its if i can think of a creative alternative rather then giving them no arms or giving them robot arms (which only done for tb and gb cause they are scientists). I try to go by canon and if the characters actively talk about having no arms all the time or not.
like toy train/Alvin and Jimmy they dont have arms but they can very much pick up stuff in canon no problem. but someone like subway seat, was struggling to move around in the first season of ONE, i want to show that struggle in his design so there will be no legs in his design.
For Toy train and cabby they have wheels! but the difference is that toy train in canon very much does not have any problems with his wheels (bro floats around sometimes), but cabby has complained about using ramps to go around, that is very much a wheelchair user specific experience, so i designed her in a wheelchair.
but like i said before its just kinda vibe based, like for gaty and suitcase like idk, they just have long sleeves that cover their hands, why? idk thought it was cute? my gaty design technically doesn't even have arms she has robot/wooden arms. my baseball literally has a cast and a baseball mitt on, like idk just cause its different?

Elijah: Hi here's my personal storyboard process, going from script to fully realized boards. maybe it can help you
First thing I do before drawing a single thing is reading the whole script. What i'm doing while i read is understand the episode. what are the themes, what are the characters motivations, what are their relationships. all that good stuff. Why I do this is so i can gather inspiration before i actually start my scene.
What some people do while reading the script is make rough scribbles next to it. roughing out ideas you get while reading so it doesn't lose you before you forget it.
i personally don't do that cause of my second step.
My second step is doing rough sketches. this is where i scribble out my ideas, i make them messy and kinda unreadable to some other then myself. the goal for this stage for me is going fast, so you do not need to make it pretty!!!
If you make it pretty now then you'll get real disappointed when you have to delete and change it later (which, 75% of the time will happen)
Why i do this is to really get the staging down, character expressions are usually for clean up.
First thing i do is take a screenshot of the script, select and crop it into the timing im imagining
then i sketch out everything. if in the middle i realize i want another panel in-between others i would scribble it in the corner and reorganize all of the panels when im done roughing everything out (thats what all the thick lined panels are lol)
When i read everything over and i feel like it's right, i start clean up! sometimes i even get a second opinion with my roughs, but for ii usually not
I go to drawing the backgrounds. which is usually the fastest stage but i find myself overdoing it a lot haha. good part about this scene (fan & mephone scene) is that it doesn't have much to really any background detail.
Why i do this before drawing the characters? i find it important to get the scene before putting your subjects in it. you want your characters to feel like they are IN the scene not the bg is drawn around them (for the most part)
heres a better example of my bgs to characters. during this stage you're trying for angles and good composition
my tip for composition is the characters are also the composition! if a character is feeling small and sad then draw them small in the stage. it can really be as simple as that, but that isn't always the best choice. character, staging, expression, posing, angle are all just the tools to making the whole you never need to use every tool in every shot.
My next and last step is drawing the characters! What im doing during this is getting their expressions, posing and scaling down. usually my tip with drawing expressions is to have at least some part uneven, asymmetrical. perfect straightness can make your characters feel stiff. which is usually not what people are trying to go for.
for this type of animation (asset based) having perfect clean boards are not needed. that's why i draw fan like a sea shell! its a guide for the animators and designers, not a finished piece of art.
for some types of animation (like hand drawn) accuracy is good, but is also never needed! that is what layout artists are for usually in a team.
my tip is to use a brush that has little to no pen pressure and texture! when there's not pen pressure you dont need to worry about line consistency you can just draw the shapes fast and easy
Fan1: im simple and fast to draw!
Fan2: im so detailed and slow to draw!
IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS PLEASE DO ASK!!!!

I did a LOT of boards for this ep (most of them is poppy scenes lol)
when i first read the script i jumped for this scene as soon as i could. one of my favorites actually, loved how it turned out in the final.
its been so long but i can finally post my cutesy little cherries
originally it was going to be guava but they changed it to melon when animation started :] i also love HMPS they are such a dysfunctional team i need more lol
another one of my favorite scenes, i really love little quiet 1 on 1 scenes like this :D
ok i know i said it before BUT I ALSO LOVE THIS SCENE it was very fun drawing toilet. i feel like i got the hang of drawing him when i finished this one, before he was kinda a struggle to draw lol
i like drawing that little metag thing, i just draw them like a nutella biscuit lol
yay to the poppy goggles i added! love to see how much paper has grown too ig lol
