It’s chilly outside, that’s for sure. With each breath, he can make out the faint formation of clouds in front of his mouth. And with each small gust of wind, he can also practically feel Kakashi’s teeth chattering beside him. It’s a wonder that Obito himself can barely feel the chill of the night when it seemed to be affecting his walking companion so heavily. Then again, he prided himself on finally being bigger than Kakashi these days so maybe that played into it.
It only took twenty or so years.
October nights really weren’t always the ideal option for walks regardless, but for whatever reason, the male at his side had insisted he be allowed to come along with him this time. A choice that, no matter the shivering and ever-dropping temperature, the Hatake seemed dead-set on not voicing he regret for making.
That’s why when they round the corner and Kakashi finally pauses in his steps, Obito fully expects him to say he’s returning back to their shared apartment. It’s the only logical conclusion, right? Why else would he suffer through anymore of a walk he obviously disliked so much?
It’s said so suddenly that Obito almost misses it. Then, with growing confusion, he’s looking around their surroundings to make sure it was him he had been speaking to. Of course it turns out their the only two on the park’s walk area. Idling there in front of the shorter male, the Uchiha contemplates if he should entertain the idea when Kakashi didn’t even bother to ask.
It (only) takes one more sudden wind gust that obviously bothers the male before Obito’s sighing loudly, already moving to shrug the garment off. Stepping forward then, he wraps the thick, black jacket around Kakashi’s shoulders before moving to his side, an arm hooking around both of his slender shoulders.
“I told you just a light jacket wouldn’t be enough. What’s the sense in listening to me though, right?” It’s half-hearted, really, given he’s already tugging the Hatake closer into his side as he moves to steer them back home.
Obito had only been sleeping on his couch for a couple weeks now, but it seems he'd already settled into some habits. Aside from leaving Kakashi's living room a hazardous mess and putting empty containers back in the kitchen, he'd picked up a routine of going out everyday after dusk for a "walk". A walk. Kakashi has serious doubts that all the other man wants to do when he goes out every night is walk. There has to be something else going on; maybe he's hiding something. Maybe it's something weird.
So, with all the possible guesses of what Obito could be doing taking up space in his mind, he decides to start an investigation. A relatively simple one. His entire plan consists of parking himself in front of the door when he sees his roommate getting ready to leave. Kakashi tells him (in no uncertain terms) that he will not be moving until he's invited to come with him. Of course, Obito gives in. Victory.
And as he comes to learn, a regrettable victory.
Ten minutes into their frigid walk, and Kakashi is hit with the crushing realization that all he's really doing is walking. At night. In the freezing cold. Obito obviously suffered a head injury on his way into Wonderland.
It's soon after his revelation that Kakashi stops and demands the other man hand over his jacket. He may have gotten himself into this chilly mess, but it's still Obito's fault that his nose feels nonexistent along with his ears and arms and... well, his everything.
Still, as adamant as he is about the fact that he deserves his friend's heavy jacket, he really doesn't expect to have it personally wrapped around his shoulders. 'What's with that look on his face?' Kakashi thinks to himself. His body tenses at the close contact, but he doesn't get a usual urge to snatch the jacket away or push Obito onto the sidewalk. It's actually sort of... nice. Nice in the way he'd feel when reading about romance. 'Shit.' The shinobi's thoughts continue to develop, although it's panic that they're developing into. 'What's with the look on my face?'
He doesn't immediately move when Obito tries to usher him back towards thei- no, his house. In fact, it seems as if Kakashi's feet have been glued to the ground. He's stuck. He's trying to sort through the racing thoughts that are now occupying his head, staring at Obito as though the other man had just slapped him. His eyes are wide and his eyebrows are drawn together tightly. It's like he's caught between being very offended, very concerned, or very confused.
Kakashi's silent protest surely seems to go on forever, but it's really only a moment before his frozen posture starts to loosen up. "Okay," is all he says at first, followed by a second, shorter pause. No "thank you" or "let's go back home". After a few seconds, Kakashi moves his face a bit closer to Obito's, but even he seems unsure about what's to happen. That is, until he works up enough courage to press a quick kiss to the other man's cheek.
Definitely the scariest thing he's ever done.
"Okay." Kakashi repeats himself, but he doesn't freeze this time. Instead, he turns his almost shell-shocked expression forward and clears his throat before finally continuing across the path towards their shared apartment. He wants so badly to smile, but he reminds himself to keep it inside. He'll have to deal with the wildfire in his head first. "We can go home now. Thank you for the jacket."
