In the lovingly painted portrait of his wife, Alice, her voluminous ruffled gown and pink satin ribbons are indicated through broad creamy strokes, but her face is more delicately and precisely rendered. Chase had known Alice since she was 14, when she and her two sisters modeled for him. Throughout their marriage Alice remained Chase’s favorite model.
