im really tired of people within the LGBTQ+ community pointing fingers at each other and saying “you don’t really belong because you benefit from [insert type of privilege here]”

a cishet asexual still suffers from marginalization. their sexuality has been pathologized as a mental illness right along with gayness and transness. in a hypersexual heternormative culture where we’re told we must enjoy sex and we must be in relationships, an asexual person is made to feel as if they’re broken, as if they don’t exist, as if forcing sex and intimacy on them is a corrective measure to “fix them”

a straight trans woman still suffers from marginalization. being able to “pass” as a woman while also being in a relationship with a man does not negate the fact that trans people face the most violence out of anyone in the queer community, must face a society that enforces a standard of womanhood that may not necessarily apply to them, and must navigate a political climate that seeks to banish them from public spaces and paint them as criminals

a bisexual man in a relationships with a woman still suffers from marginalization. compulsory heterosexuality not only erases this identity but enforces this idea that bisexuality is a phase or a kink that can soon be grown out of. bisexuality is the largest subset of the LGBTQ+ community yet has the least amount of representation and leaves bi people more likely to have mental illnesses. being constantly recloseted when you date different genders has psychological and emotional consequences

individuals in a polyamorous relationship still suffer from marginalization. they exist in a society that hails monogamy as the only acceptable relationship model and attempts to make polyamorous individuals feel as if their relationships are abnormal, deviant, and inappropriate for children. they are treated as the example of what not to do, seeing as how society fails to acknowledge the breadth of relationship models that don’t necessarily have to include just two people. 

examples like these can go on and on and on and on

these critiques also exist without the context of race, ethnicity, immigration status, ability, and/or religion. we’re so focused on worrying about whether certain queer identities even belong in the LGBTQ+ umbrella yet fail to see how whiteness, Christianity, citizenship laws, access to disability services, etc. further compound on the experiences of those who are told by a cishet world that we are abnormal. 

and that’s what it comes down to: there is a formula for privilege in our society, and part of that formula involves being straight, being cis, wanting to marry, desiring sex, and believing in only two genders. queerness was always meant to represent those who live in opposition of those formulas, in opposition of systems that enforce and perpetuate those formulas. 

our job is not to gatekeep our community because that is childish and unproductive. our job is to understand the systems that oppress us, figure out how to navigate/change these systems, and advocate for all people who fall victim to the violence and oppression that these systems were created to enforce. 

so no. im sure there have been plenty of asexual folks forced into therapists’ offices, forced to go through physically invasive treatments, and forced to hear that their identity is a disorder before the DSM finally decided to mention the word asexuality. and even then, there’s no work done by the DSM to differentiate these disorders from asexuality so im sure there are still people who are ace and don’t know they’re ace undergoing this treatment.

so for those of you who don’t know, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (or DSM) is a book re-released every few years that mental health professionals use as a reference to diagnose and treat mental disorders. currently we’re on the fifth version of the DSM (or the DSM-V) and before that we had the DSM-IV. now both versions of the DSM have a whole section on Sexual and Gender Identity Disorders. female hypoactive sexual desire disorder and male hypoactive sexual desire disorder are those that are most reminiscent of asexuality – i.e. the lack of sexual drive or the inability to become aroused. 

now, obviously trauma can lead to a loss of sex drive or lack of arousal. but, there is plenty of literature to support the fact that these conditions (i hesitate to call them disorders since that implies that these are things that need to be corrected which isn’t true) can possibly be due to biologic, environmental, and hormonal factors as well as social and psychological. menopause/andropause, fluctuating estrogen/testosterone levels, surgeries such as hysterectomies/prostate removals, etc. can all affect sex drive and arousal. and obviously, if you’re asexual you do not experience attraction and may not experience arousal in certain situations. 

now the DSM-IV made no mentions of asexuality. doctors considered asexuality to be a sexual dysfunction (i.e. an abnormality that needed to be fixed because we are so obsessed with the idea that experiencing sexual attraction is normal and necessary). the ace/aro community has done a fuck ton of advocacy over the years and the DSM-V was updated to state, and I quote, “If a lifelong lack of sexual desire is better explained by one’s self-identification as “asexual,” then a diagnosis of female sexual interest/arousal disorder or male hypoactive sexual desire disorder is not made.” 

now this is a start, but there are problems with this. the biggest being that the only way treatment can be halted is if a person self-identifies as asexual. if a person doesn’t know that they’re asexual, the DSM does no work to sufficiently differentiate between these “sexual disorders” and a sexual identity. so it could very well happen that someone who doesn’t know that they’re asexual is convinced by a therapist that they have a sexual abnormality that needs to be corrected. 

so yes, you absolutely can be diagnosed with these disorders if you’re ace. it’s very possible. it’s also not true that difficulties with arousal are only caused by trauma (that’s completely medically and factually incorrect). asexuality has been pathologized for many years and despite new strides taken to become more inclusive, the DSM-V still has problems that maintains the likelihood that asexual folks may still be treated for a disorder instead of being respected for their identity.

I’ve been meaning to make this post since like, October, but since something new has come to my attention recently I’m finally going to make it.

I almost dated a guy I worked with back in February of 2018, but he turned out to be a MAJOR asshole so I told him to get lost. He was so rude and a lot of my coworkers noticed afterwards how his behavior towards me and in general had shifted. All but one, who was another girl my age on the team who he IMMEDIATELY targeted next. (As in, 3 days after I told him to fuck off lmao) When I noticed this, I warned her about what he’d done and said to me, and how badly he’d treated me and told her to watch out for the red flags because there were many. She acted genuinely grateful but continued to date him because she wanted to be “neutral” and “get to know him herself first”. I found out later that she’d believed I’d been trying to spread gossip about him, because he “explained” his side of things and they made sense to her. They were just a “matter of differing opinion” (spoiler alert: they weren’t)

Fast forward to like, September/October-ish, and guess what? She is now living with me, because he fucked her over SOOO badly that she got manipulated and abused into a 15 month apartment lease with him. He isolated her from friends and loved ones, and tried to control who she was friends with, where she was and when. He mentally and emotionally beat her down and belittled her, and also tried to convince her to sabotage me at work. She’s stuck on this lease with him but it’s unsafe to live with him, so I offered up my home.

I’m bringing up this story because it parallels the situation that happened with Z (chromaticmaelstrom) back on New Years of 2017. When I told people about what he did to me and they “supported me” but only to my face, and then only days later were back by his side claiming his “story” of sleepwalking was legitimate or that they wanted to take a “neutral stance” because it didn’t “directly involve them”.

And now, at the tail end of 2018 I come to find out that Z (chromaticmaelstrom) has done it AGAIN. I won’t be naming who it is that it happened to, as they do not want any association with him. But I want ALL of you, EVERYONE in the fantroll community to know I am both really frustrated and really disappointed in the fact that for 2 whole years, Z (chromaticmaelstrom) is STILL welcomed in this community by people. People who thought I was lying, people who believed his “sleepwalking” excuse, People who reached out to me to give their consolation yet continued to be his friend and associate/interact with him. Those who felt it “wasn’t as big a deal” as I was making it out to be. Those who unfollowed me “for the drama” anytime it was posted about or brought up (of which I have each and every one of you who did so blocked). Those who claimed to cut ties with him and the group around him but then turned around and drew art for him.

I am SO very disappointed that, of all the posts I’ve made both about what he did, and what the people near him have done to me (Orchidraindrops, torturedspirits and sealtrolls all cyberstalking me, harassing me, sending me anon hate, calling me slurs) with ample amounts of evidence to back up and support my claims, hardly ANY of you reblogged those posts to alert others of how dangerous and hostile these people in the community are.

People like russetschemes, smashtrolls, strawberriroyalty, orchidraindrops, torturedspirits, and sealtrolls, individuals who all brushed off what happened to me as little more than me being “overdramatic” about a very traumatic situation, getting little to no backlash for associating with someone like Z. I want each and every one of you whose url I just typed out to know that, because you felt what happened to me wasn’t “serious enough” an issue to cut ties with Z, that he has once again physically assaulted someone while they were attempting to sleep. I will not name names, to respect this persons privacy, but I want you all to know that from yalls “neutral stance” to full on defending of this person, you’ve enabled him to do this bullshit for a THIRD TIME. YES, THIRD. Because he did it TWICE while he was here with me. Once with my friend Hannah, and again with me only a couple nights after. I would @ each and every one of these URLs if I wasn’t blocked/didnt already have them blocked.

I’m not gonna make a whole big fuss about this, but I felt it necessary to make this post after finding out the info in December. I’ve linked my BYF up above that has most the evidence already compiled, though it’s still incomplete due to just how much I still have to gather/organize/censor.
