The trend of people asking 'which one is the weapon and which one is the meister' feels amusing to me since Soul Eater should really have focused on that living weaponry dynamic instead of ending up partially being a generic shounen slop not that different to 'kids wielding magic weapons and meisters are your generic shounen one-man army' (ngl the reason why I lament Ohkubo ending up having BS and Kid as his favorites in terms of actually making drawn out fight scenes)
The whole meister-weapon dynamic is still explored deeply with SoMa at least; here the weapon is the primary brain and source of adaptive special powers, while the meister serves as the primary brawn, fighting spirit and moral compass. Overall equal and complementary dynamic where both sides have equal agency in battle that you can technically mimic with your chosen duos. E.g in Maka and Soul, Soul has black blood that gets balanced with Maka's ADW, which enables him to tamper safely with his piano without losing himself and equips Maka with power ups such as black blood armor as well as aiding her in defeating tricky enemies by acting like a soul hacker. Maka on one hand has her advanced Soul perception making her act as a radar and field data gatherer for Soul to tamper with, her ADW keeping him sane from the madness' influence, as well as being the one with a strong sense of responsibility to society and more goal-oriented making her the one who drives where their adventures go. You can mimic that exact dynamic in your duo/ship by giving each their complementary abilities/roles within the unit.
Meanwhile BS and Kid's teams unfortunately have their weapons functioning more like accessories where the narrative even focused on how strong they are already on their own they can basically be dropped into any other battle shounen flick.
I wonder if there are parallels between Medusas passion for science and warped sense of justice (if i could call it that?), that blur her moral compass and capability to put boundaries on herself, where no price is too high for her goal, and Souls passion for music and need for goal and purpose in life
Perhaps. I like that Medusa is truly a fuck around, find out type of scientist till the very end and not really a visionary villain who really cares that much about society even if her goal is wanting the status quo to change, all she cares about is completing her personal experiment and thesis. As an INTP i really relate to that bit, dedicating your whole life to your craft essentially and then after finding that the ultimate ingredient to finish off your project is to have you die for it? Then call that going out with a bang. I always feel INTP villains would primarily be driven by wanting to escape boredom, sheer curiosity and data gathering, and just solve whatever problems coming their way creatively, the goal like societal upheaval isn't really that important when it's always just stimulating the Ti-Ne that's the most important.
Considering Soul is another Ti-dom (ISTP) I see why he would personally think that DWMA and Arachnophobia aren't really that different for him; both are excuses to get away from Wes and be useful as a weapon, and later him embracing his status as Maka's piano-scythe seemed to come down to being able to be both useful as a weapon and solving problems with music (with emotionally connecting with people through his art coming as a very late realization) Solving hands-on problems is the ultimate Ti-Se (this is why Soul seemed he could just be a very cold and bored mercenary if he didn't have more prosocial friends like Maka, BS, and Kid)
Speaking of Soul feeling like he'd just become the ultimate mercenary without more prosocial friends...it made me feel like Justin might be that ultimate cold mercenary-like ISTP since he even admitted he got nothing going on for him beside his 'loyalty' to some higher being (he only saw himself as a tool to deliver executions essentially, an instrument of war, not a human being who can form bonds)
It's always funny whenever people wants one-sided soma it's always Soul being the one unrequited when in the manga it felt like Maka's the one with unrequited feelings while Soul is too existential to think about romance (but in the end his perpetual wandering in the void mode led him back to Maka anyway so it felt like he can start actually be interested in romance from there on)
It's so funny being a shipper when you're aroace it's like you're an anthropologist, like hey fictional blorbos who live in my head let me study your bonds under a microscope and take notes on what happens when I throw Valentines Day into your enclosure

Year 2 is over!
And I didn't really make you wait. Year 2 Part 2 of Distance Makes the Heart... is done and posted on AO3.
I'm giving you some slapstick, but also some emotional damage. Please welcome my new OC Hidaka Takeshi, here to ruin all of our days.
Adding my now consistent shout out of @roseyskypeach because at it's all thanks to her that I'm churning this out like I am.
I wonder if the black blood was inspired by symbiot from spider man..
I haven't reach much from Spiderman but it's possible...
Is the reason I barely receive asks (either Soul-related or just pissing at Ohkubo's writing in general, or others) because my posts are hard to keep up? Like why do I have so many Crona-related asks instead...I was sorta expecting more Soul-related stuff (or hell soma-related stuff...)

I think people really should start taking off their rose-colored glasses surrounding Maka in this fandom and actually able to admit her narrative flaws (and please, every single character in this series got their own problems since the whole story was written as it went. So Maka isn't the only one. It's okay that she's not a perfect female shounen female MC. Soul Eater is just that flawed) which created this narrative double standard across the board that made it unfair to other characters too: primarily she's the one character the narrative constantly shields from consenquences to ensure whatever childlike idealism she has always work out.
E.g Maka bringing Crona and not shown to be thinking about the victims they hurt (or like the narrative rather ignores that particular part) is technically shitty and why you can see some corners of the fandom are divisive over this writing decision; how rather than giving Crona an actual redemption arc, or give Maka a more complex arc about responsibility as a partner and savior, Crona was moreso written to prop Maka like a savior figure by ignoring others (including victims of Crona) who technically also helped Crona to make her seem more 'special.' Unfortunately robbing Crona of their agency as a character and the victims' sufferings and also hindered Maka from growing into a more complex character since all she needed to do the whole time was just to keep moving forward and not really reflect on herself or deal with possibly being "wrong" for once. The sudden pivot into Crona rehab technically also made some of Maka's arc inconsistent in trajectory too. Like she was declaring she wanted to make up for almost killing her partner and wanted to be better at protecting her loved ones...yet this plot point ended up being left in the backburner since as we see later Maka is barely made to learn how to meet people where they are at and instead just...the characters around her ensuring she can keep on finishing her pet project or continue meistering rather than even learning how to be a proper leader.
I've seen people going 'I love Maka she's queen' and then going into mental gymnastics to blame her over the top reactions like her Maka chops or kicking Soul outta the window to Soul (as if part of her arc isn't partly dismantling her own ego that kept her bias against men. It was both an old anime gag and partly a demo of how her defense mechanism reacts) and then painting her as an absolute saint because of her treatment of Crona sometimes and ignoring her status as traumatized teenager (who needed someone patient with her too) with her own set of flaws and mental problems who technically isn't that fitting to be a therapist.
Case in point:
Just to showcase that even Crona is not sparred from Maka's overall bad emotional regulations that Soul had to be the one stepping in.
Just...the more you can accept her flaws. Maybe can see where Ohkubo was clearly struggling to write with her. The more we can have nuanced discussions in this fandom.
I used to be a former Maka fan before moving to Soul but even when I was in my Maka phase I barely found any essays that actually talk about Maka as deeply as people did with Soul at times (people at least weren't afraid to see where Soul was wrong or not that perfect about things) back in the day and it was because people are always fixated in propping her up as this perfect badass angelic female character and not really exploring her raw human flaws.
When you think about it, Maka is kinda the only character whose trauma is treated somewhat seriously by the characters (and it results in a fandom who puts her up on a pedestal too) she gotta be the only one whom others gotta meet where she's at...even when she's being decidedly difficult
When Maka does her questionable Maka chop to Soul: (with a blush and she strangely called him cool)
Stein: (thinks they're just cute kids being cute)
When Maka is fed up with Crona's bullshit: You idiot! You dork! You dope! JUST DIE!!
Soul: Wait, aren't we supposed to just talk to them not kill them?!
Also looking at Maka...she technically got less 'moral agent' qualities to her compared to the other boys for having most of her role being the 'protected' character (as in the characters are always trying to protect her innocence and childlike idealism at times) and she technically isn't unwavering in her 'goodness' either (e.g she needed Soul to remind her not to kill Crona after she had had enough of their bullshit later in the final arc, but at this point in time no one actually would be 'wrong' to kill or spare Crona given they're a threat and had killed thousands anyway. Sparring Crona was presented as the moral ideal but not exactly the 'necessary and more moral' choice given their crimes) to make her really be a 'moral compass' character, I think she functionally felt more like a Morality Pet in the same way Angela is to Mifune. When the boys had to make a pivotal moral choice it's always between chosing the side of humanity or be a true chaotic free spirit, while whenever Maka had to make a choice the narrative deemed to be equal to a moral choice it's always something decidedly less black vs gray like the boys and more gray vs white (e.g choosing to stick with or let go of Soul because he deserves better than her, choosing between reality or an illusion of her panicking to get power at any cost to ensure her dad and friends dying in front never happens, choosing wether to kill Crona like Death allowed to bring justice to the dead Ukrainians or choose to find other ways to still get them sparred for a second chance and clings to the sliver of hope)
What's great about being a Soul Eater fic writer is you know you'll always do the characters better than the actual author did
Literally all the MCs in this series deserve so much better

I genuinely feel Soul vs Stein has the potential to be lengthened in a reboot, since I do feel Ohkubo doesn't really like drawing the autonomous weapon fights and felt more comfortable drawing characters who wield weapons, nor does he seem to like to be lengthy around Soul's inner turmoil given he admitted he sucked at writing complex dialogues and seemingly only confident in doing it if Black Star is involved (cuz BS never talks about complex topics, his thought processes is thus simpler for him apparently) while Kid's stuff felt more like infodumps of the general lore Ohkubo had written for the 'Order' side since Ohkubo kinda gave Kid a condition that made his entire arc easily summarized as 'stop thinking in absolutes' unlike Soul's heavily raw and messy human condition where he's constantly torn between both sides and really presenting the courage to be humanly interdependent and vulnerable
Soul grew to be calmer and grounded overtime, losing a lot of his former temper, while Maka never lost her temper, but overtime her temper felt less and less justified and became more clear it was a defensive response than Soul genuinely being an idiot, that it felt more like stress response or her trying to mask something inside (e.g her growing dependent on Soul or finding herself getting attracted to him triggers the fight response for some reason) basically Maka's 'bossiness' being exposed overtime as performative defense mechanism.
But again, the last time Maka reacts violently towards Soul for no reason was Mad Blood and it was accompanied by a blush and finding him 'cool' despite Soul not intending to be 'cool' (it was him being the most unapologetic about himself: someone who doesn't care to meet other people's expectations even if it was his own inner demon demanding him he should be 'great') and in the last chapter, Maka willingly sit beside him on the backstage rather than on the front stage to show how she'd rather stay in his own little pressure-free world where she felt the most relaxed, felt the most permitted to not perform to the world.
