Will always roll my eyes at anyone getting up in arms at Kirona and think 'they wouldn't work because <insert stupid and shallow reason like Kid hates Crona's asymmetrical bangs>' or Mastar wouldn't work 'cuz they fought a lot' (hell, lets add SoMa to that mix too) and then unironically ship Croma because 'Maka is the perfect bubbly sunshine that people Crona and Kid need' and ignoring her own issues again.
If you think Kirona wouldn't work for shallow reasons then you're just seeing both of them for their shallow qualities and hence why you aren't creative enough to make it work.
When ship wars start using argumentum ad verecundiam you know critical thinking is no longer encouraged. Hence why ship wars are only fun when it's pointing out the flaws on the other factions' 'takes' (resorting to Die for Our Ship or Ron the Death Eater strategies to make their ship look good) since criticizing these behaviors can actually increase literacy, creativity and critical thinking skills when done right compared to just throwing out 'because I said so' statements left and right and nobody is allowed to question it.
The saddest part of Soul Eater isn't that it's underrated.
The saddest part is it was written by Atsushi Ohkubo.
Pretty sure if he handed the basic ideas and concept to a better, less maladaptively horny writer things wouldn't feel as wasted as they are

I won't exactly say Kid is the least complex of the MCs as much as he's the most straightforward of the bunch. What you see on the surface from him is what you get, Kid is the one character who just expresses everything clearly, when he doesn't feel adequate he voices it, when he dislikes or likes something, he voices it, when he has ideals, he expresses it out loud, when he has doubts he expresses it both comically and seriously, you can just sit back and watch him to really get him with not much backtracking to pick up little details like the others.
Basically if the MCs are all puzzle levels to be solved then Kid is the Easy mode, Black Star and Maka are Intermediate mode thanks to their conflicting internalities and externalities that can feel subversive to what the audience are likely used to, then Soul is the Hard mode since not only he's got conflicting internal and external worlds, he's the least expressive, most of his depth aren't shown in words but through symbolisms and his actions, the text barely pointed any spotlight on him and sorta treated him like a background character at times but each of those moments are decidedly odd that you wonder if this is the text just being lowkey in showing the kind of character he is. If Show Don't Tell is a character, then Soul not only embodies it, he is kinda like a Solve-it-yourself type of character.
Year 4 is DONE!
Your reprieve is here [or mine so you don't hate me]. I hope this chapter feels as vindicating as it felt to write. From here on in, we're in smut/fluff territory. I don't know how many chapters I'll attempt to close it out, but we'll see if my beloved @roseyskypeach keeps feeding me inspo.
Read it on AO3!
dude omg so i'm currently watching 10 things i hate about you, and idk WHY but i can't stop thinking about soul and maka as patrick verona and katarina stratford like THEY FIT THEM SO WELL???

I can see SE reboot having 3 seasons. Each season having 24-25 eps divided into 2 cours. The second season might as well end in Baba Yaga arc, leaving the next 25 eps be the rest of the unadapted chapters.
If we gonna wrap the character arcs into neat little bows each cour (Maka and Soul in particular as supposedly the mains of mains)
First cour (12-13 eps): Starts normally with perhaps the first 3 chapters now crammed into the first episode entirely (or make it the same?) I can see the first cour end in either the experiment arc with Maka coughing out the black blood after Soul pushed himself to resonate with her and Black Star still trying to master the uncanny sword or it ends with all of that and Kid investigating the Nidhogg (the exam episode being moved back in this case)
2nd cour probs starts with either the exam episode (also helps to keep the pattern of every season starting and ending with Maka and Soul) or Kid's team aboard the ghost ship, and it ends with the Kishin revival with the weapons carrying their meisters home and Soul seemingly contemplating he needed to get more serious.
2nd season first cour starts with the trial enrollment arc ofc, Soul got a new look and attitude, Maka got a new project, and then ends with Joe's death, Crona leaving DWMA, Medusa giving the BREW, Black Star going back to japan to meet Tsubaki's parents, and Maka feeling conflicted about the whole Crona situation but of course Soul is there presenting himself as her support.
2nd cour of course starts with the clown arc and then the rest of the Baba Yaga arc.
3rd season 1st cour of course starts with Soul becoming a death scythe and the Spartoi being established to look for Kid, and it ends with the end of the Salvage arc.
2nd cour can start with Mad Blood Arc as the madness got worse and worse, and of course, as in every seasons so far, the series start end with yet Maka and Soul (lol)
I suppose it's actually really possible to structure a reboot around Soul himself lol (this was written before I developed the Soul Nexus lens)
What's cool is how the Black Room dance scene is memorable and non-controversial no matter where you go since it summarizes the overall theme of weapon-meister trust and Soul Harmony just fine, it can act as the signature scene that represents the whole series' theme just fine. Meanwhile the Crona rehab plot (and the iconic scene where kid Maka and kid Crona meet) is controversial in some corners of the fandom both in the west and JP because so many concerning things went unaddressed afterwards and lowkey made the characters look bad in hindsight.
So yea, I feel if they need to capitalize any scene, better use the black room dance one.

So technically Soul and Maka have 'Red is Heroic' color motif while Black Star and Tsubaki have 'Blue Is Heroic' color motif
Usually red-clad heroes are depicted as the hot-blooded type for obvious reasons, while the blue-clad ones are the ones depicted to either be calmer or more disciplined also because obvious reasons. Thus, making the fact that SoMa (led by the model student Maka) have red and TsuStar (led by the boisterous rebel Black Star) have blue ironic. However, in terms of character trajectory it kinda fits, Maka and Soul's arcs are sorta about them reconnecting with their deeply buried true passions (Soul literally reconnecting with his music passion, Maka learning to be ok with not being perfect and allowing herself to live life on her own terms) which basically allows them to live more authentically instead of mere highly competent dwma agents, their arc is about getting used to live according to their true passions. While Black Star and Tsubaki's storyline is sorta instilling the Path of the Warrior code of honor following the Uncanny Sword and Black Star's bloody legacy and ambitions, their entire arc is about getting used to putting in place a discipline.
I admit I'm late to this trend. I don't like apples.

I think what's technically more tragic about Soul's sacrifice during the church is...while there's a possibility Maka could just die outright, literally split into two if she she had been the one taking blade (Soul jumping mid-transformation might have made him a little more sturdy than the 100% human Maka, hence he only got cut open) had Maka survived and the one got infected instead it was kinda implied her body would just purge the infection automatically thanks to her anti-demon wavelength, so she would never suffer its more adverse effects like Soul did.
On one hand, Maka surviving the blade would mean nobody would suffer long term, but they won't be able to use the black blood as battle aid as a result. While Soul taking the blade means he has to be the one who suffered long term, but they'd be able to use the black blood at the very least (while actively risking turning into a kishin for Soul) as the high-risk, high-reward power

So people like to create demon-angel imagery around Crona and Maka but I feel it didn't hit as deep (basically it's just Crona is the kid who is forced to do evil, and Maka is the good girl who saved them. How generic) as to whenever people create angel-demon imagery with Maka and Soul since when it's applied to SoMa their imageries ended up being ironic and by that alone you already brought out their multifacetedness (the angel actually suffers from being dutiful and perfect to the world because of her human flaws, the demon is desperately trying to anchor himself to the best of his humanity so he doesn't succumb to his worst flaws. She gave him a reason to be better, he gave her the permission to be imperfect)
As foils Crona has no support system, while Maka virtually has a perfect one. There's the usual 'Maka eventually chose to use her support system, while Crona kept rejecting the hands offered to them' but like...still pretty generic victim x savior dynamic in the end since it's still about Maka acting as an 'angelic' figure to save Crona while Crona's job was just to fall for Maka to catch them...
Unless again...people are actually willing to portray croma as a deconstruction of the 'Brooding Boy, Gentle Girl' trope (though SoMa technically already does that) the Angel Girl eventually got fed up and found out how taxing it is to keep up the perfect act, while the Demon Kid realized they needed to start learning how to stand on their own two feet.
