Needed a warm-up, so here's the SE Family Week 2026 prompt: Resonance
In the height of a cataclysmic event, Soul sent himself back in time to stop their unfortunate fate from unfolding, succeeding at the cost of self-sacrifice. Due to his strong will to keep going and the memories he held, however, he was reborn into a new form – condensed of the cataclysm's collapse and a living seal to the paradox that was broken through.
Although both versions of Soul have ended up quite different, there's no shortage of experience to be gained by training together.
When a bond is important to the story as a whole (the bond being the foundational relationship of the story and its thematic thesis) there's usually an object meant to symbolize that bond.
In Zootopia there's Judy and Nick's Carrot Pen, which was used more extensively in the sequel. Not only are they protective over it, it breaking apart at some point as their relationship started getting sour during their mission, and then it getting patched up later as their relationship improved being a visual symbol of their relationship development. But the Carrot Pen being a recorder containing each other's voice clips where they usually remind the other of what was wrong with the other (Judy using it to blackmail Nick over his criminal past, Nick using it to get Judy remember she can be dumb and naive) also functions how they're each other's learning experience (in the end of Zootopia 2 it just contains the voice of Nick saying smth he was struggling to say throughout the movie: that he loves his partner and cares about her life and wellbeing)
In Frozen, the foundational relationship is between Anna and Elsa and their symbol is Olaf, being a personification of their childhood innocence and familial love: the snowman who loves warm hugs and...fascinated with heat in general. I haven't really watched Frozen 2 and if Olaf did get used more in symbolic way, but Olaf is very plucky and kinda built on black comedy jokes, which kinda showed how Anna's unconditional devotion towards Elsa keep getting her almost killed each time (and literally culminating in her literally committing a heroic sacrifice and be a complete martyr to the person who kept on hurting her just to give her the warmth she needed. Like how Olaf almost died near the fireplace trying to get Anna warm)
I feel like in Soul Eater, the foundational relationship is ultimately Soul and Maka (even if for Maka herself it's also between her and her dad) and their symbol is the Piano/Music. Maka technically chose Soul at first because he's a scythe like her dad (cementing how her bond with Spirit is significant from the start) but their partnership really only started once Soul played the piano for her and she passed the test (Soul deliberately played the piano to put her off, yet she responded positively instead) in that moment Soul was baring his soul to her (he literally titled the dark and strange song he purposely played terribly as 'This Is The Kind of Guy I Am') and he did not do it to perform and impress an audience like how he was expected back home. Yet Maka accepted it and wanted more of it. And by that point on Maka became his safe space. Later on the piano also symbolized Maka's need for proof that she didn't have to work so hard to earn her place in something as an antidote to her neurotic overachieving nature, since Soul values her lack of knowledge in music and had considered her his muse as is, having seen a version of himself he's terrified but wanted to be in her: someone who always works hard and always tries her best in things even if the odds are against her all things considered. At some point it also tries to tear them apart in a sense that Soul constantly being such a reclusive artist who refuses to act on his more sentimental side (and refuses to embrace his pianist self) and failing to inform Maka's exact role in his music eventually drives Maka to feel like she needs to get better at understanding music to not feel left out only for her to stop trying the moment Soul clearly got an easier time talking about music with anyone else. And it's only after Soul completely let down all the walls surrounding his musician self at the end of the story (telling Maka that she's the co-creator of his music: used to be symbolized by him literally telling Maka to sit on the piano bench during Clown Arc) did Maka become assured their connection over music was firm after all. There's a symbol of literal harmony there (Soul and Maka being textbook Odd Couple in general, Maka not understanding music but vibed with his music as is, Soul being a musician but hated his music, them being weapon-meister) vulnerability (Soul clearly considered the piano as a window to his own soul, hence him being extremely reclusive over it. Maka was genuinely drawn to it that she really wished she could be part of it to the point of jealousy with others) and mutual reliance/safe space (Maka provided Soul the basic emotional security that she likes whatever he plays, Soul's inclusion of Maka in his music despite her struggle in understanding music on general provides her the reassurance that she's already earned her place without doing much)
Themes for 2026!
Aaaaand drum roll please! Here are the final winning themes for SoulxMaka week!

Basically Soul and Maka's arcs about summarized the entire thesis of the series (including the macro political one presented with the mankind vs witchkind conflict)
Crona is more meaningful within the thesis when you read them as a foil to the rest of the main cast, not just Maka. Crona also had never seen Maka at her worst, only at her best, when one of the pervasive themes are people learning to accept each other's flaws (and in this series, the ones who had dealt with Maka at her worst were Soul and Spirit. And both of them had proven their unconditional acceptance to her)
I'm sorry Croma ain't really all that within the larger schemes of things when the rest of the Spartoi are just as unconditionally accepting of Crona (that Maka at some point had to be the one to fight her urges to just give up on them lol)
Ngl another result of Maka fandom girlbossification is people downplaying how many times over the course of the story Maka was driven by her insecurities (she's not immune to it. She's not brave in every scenario) Her perfectionism and seeming neurotic need to overachieve were driven by her fear of being a liability, losing her connections and thinking love is conditional. It's people downplaying this basic ass insecurity and wanting her to be a courageous girlboss that made people seem to fail to understand Salvage and thinking she was OOC or 'reusing insecurities' there. Salvage is a bit different from Clown Arc in a sense that Maka learned it's okay to separate her self-worth from her output and there's nothing shameful in relying on Soul to cover her own weaknesses, Soul wouldn't abandon her just because she isn't perfect. Hence unlike Clown Arc where Maka ended the arc curbstomping the clown's ass like a cliche shounen hero, Salvage notably ended with Maka crippled and needing to be carried by Soul. Showcasing how Soul values her even in her most imperfect self.

Ngl the most shocking additions into Maka and Soul's folders I feel is Maka being a Classical Anti-Hero and fellow Mr Vice Guy as the rest of the main meisters (and ngl it's actually laid out there in the open throughout the story showcasing how she's in no way perfect and struggles with those same imperfections...which made you wonder how people still managed to think her flaws are so minor she'd still constitute as an ideal hero) Soul turning out to be a Byronic Hero is also pretty shocking bet and won't occur to people simply skimming through stuff, but his inner conflicts and complicated psychological defenses (hence his status as a rebellious rich kid who is also good-looking in-universe qualifies) did line up a lot with the archetype, but you gotta squint really hard into the text to really see it, otherwise Soul just seemed like a decent stoic 'sidekick' Maka has.
Kinda concerns me BS and Kid's tropes folders used to be fairly accurate observations while Maka and Soul's ones used to be either very underwritten or overly idealized as to be wrong like the troper had no idea what kinda characters Soul and Maka really are: for Soul, only ever mentions how he's 'cool' and loyal to Maka. Barely talked about anything else and his 'development' is only 'he gets more serious', for Maka she had been given 'Ideal Hero' trope and that her development is 'she gradually loses her temper issues and becomes genuinely sweet' when canonically she continues being plagued by her signature vices (her bias against men and her temper) till the very last chapter even if its only for a joke, and even in most arcs her real enemies had always been her own flaws and self-doubts rather than the external enemy, making her much closer to Classical Anti-Hero and Mr Vice Guy than an ideal hero (she's basically Judy Hopps but a lot more flawed)
It can be chalked up to the manga being very lowkey about Soul's character and development I suppose (even the Wikia left out so many of his developments in the final arc before I edited it, maybe because no one really knew how to look at Soul's character beside being Maka's sidekick) meanwhile the story did give Maka lots of double standards where she rarely has to deal with being wrong and her misandry is played for laughs eventhough it was the root cause of the trust issues that hindered her a lot of times, so people tended to be prone to brush aside her flaws and hyperfixate on her being last portrayed as Crona's 'personal hero' (nevermind her losing her temper at them at some point she was dependent on others to get her on the right track) and since she's supposed to be the protagonist that means she's gotta be the most heroic, most virtuous character.
In case we got cromaka-supremacist blog bullshit again in the future where they post anti-stuff on main tag ima create a blog named cromaka-supremacist-bullshit. Where I set it as 'a blog dedicated to making fun of @/cromaka-supremacist and their horseshit' or smth like that and making pro soma and pro healthy shipping posts.
these soul x maka fic writers are sooo good. literally an endless supply of fics at my disposal constantly. idk what yall are on but I need some.
The duality of me loving Hans as a villain, but hating him as a "poor misunderstood baby :("
I don't care about the argument that he's an abuse victim (I definitely agree he is though). Being a victim of abuse doesn't magically make someone a good person, and it's extremely common for bad people to have a history of being abused. It at best explains their actions, but it doesn't excuse them.
"Cool motive, still (attempted) murder!"
And sure, we could argue all day that him being written as a villain wasn't done the best and it could use from tweaks, but I will die on the hill that him being a villain works best for the story they wanted to tell of how dangerous it can be to blindly give yourself to someone. Hans is supposed to fool you with his "prince charming" act, that is the literal point of his entire character.
Also, if anyone dares bring up Kristoff I'm gonna scream. Like... I beg of you to please understand the difference between getting engaged to someone you haven't even known for a day vs starting to date someone you've known for a week or so and who has already proven he will lay his life on the line for you.
One of the things I still love so much about this movie is how it tackles the "love at first sight" trope without shooting it down completely. At the end of the day Hans was the real problem, not Anna wanting to find love in the first place.

Apparently, me and my brother cracked the code on How To Write Good™️ Het Ships:
Business-To-Lovers.
@youcannotkillmeiamsubhuman and I were talking about how most of the best het couples started out "exploiting" each other.
I mean that in the sense that they had a deal of some kind. A "you do this for me, I'll do this for you, then we go our separate ways" sorta thing, you know? A business exchange.
The way they go about it will oftentimes be different, but eventually, they realize they care more about each other than whatever deal they had, they fall in love, etc, etc, you know how it goes.
BUT it's the part about them having a "strictly business" kind of relationship at first before devolving into love that both amuses me and intrigues me. Especially since there are so many couples that follow this pattern.
Tiana x Naveen. Anna x Kristoff. Eugene x Rapunzel. Nick x Judy. Rumi x Jinu. Uzi x N. Yor x Loid. Wednesday x Tyler. The list goes on.
The only time this pattern doesn't apply is when it's teenagers. Like Izuku and Ochaco, or Callum and Rayla (Callum and Rayla might seem like they were trying to get something out of each other, but they ultimately had the same end goal so it doesn't count). I have no clue why it doesn't apply to them.
Generally speaking though, a lot of the best het ships started out as solely business partners trying to achieve something with the sometimes reluctant help of the each other.
That's incredibly funny and we should do it more often.
The wedding day💖
