lyrics to "here's to the state of richard nixon" by phil ochs, a rewrite of his "here's to the state of mississippi," typewritten by the author at the apartment of chip berlet on january 20th, 1974
phil explained the song in a march 22nd, 1974 interview with the ann arbor sun:
âSo [âHere's to the State of Mississippiâ] was a study of the symbology of evil. Being born in the south myself, I didn't feel comfortable attacking it, so I stopped singing the song for a while. Especially after Mississippi John Hurt, one drunken night, said âPhil, you really shouldn't sing that song anymore. After all, people like me are from Mississippi too.â
So I had to look around for a new symbol of evil and along he came in 1968, more than I could hope for, and I switched the song, right around the time of Cambodia and Kent State. I kept rewriting itâyou know Agnew used to be in itâto the changing circumstances. Finally over Xmas we recorded it.â

iâve heard that the liner notes on phil ochs in concert are mao zedong poems. as i do not own the album, i, alas, do not know which poems these are. do you, maybe, perhaps, perchance, know what the poems are?
changsha, tapoti, loushan pass, snow, yellow crane tower, kunlun, the immortals, & reply to mr. liu ya-tzu. i posted a scan of the in concert liner notes at this link <3
PHIL OCHS - The War Is Over
â ⎠â âbut this land is still troubled by men who have to hate
they twist away our freedom and they twist away our fate
fear is their weapon and treason is their cry
we can stop them if we tryâ
â verse from an early version of "power and the glory" by phil ochs (1963)

i was curious about that picture of phil ochs in chile and looked it up and found this article medium.com/@JulieGoTrue/a-brief-and-beautiful-friendship-7896b37d76f1 which i thought was moving... thought id share it and ask your thoughts
those pictures of phil with bob dylan were taken in new york at that 1974 benefit concert mentioned in the article!
in every phil documentary or biography the vĂctor jara chapters have always been the hardest for me to get through. just thinking about it fucks me up. jara was a great artist... in phil's words, "he's not a singer, he's not a musician, he's a communist, he really is a member of the communistâ he believes what he's saying. unlike pete seeger, unlike woody guthrie, unlike bob dylan, unlike phil ochs. i mean, he's the real article. i mean, he's not fucking around"... jara did also have a gorgeous voice though
here's phil *in* chile in 1971 & a picture of him performing at some other benefit for chile circa 1974 (thanks to julia hollowofhaze's blog archive)
phil ochs' gold lamĂŠ suit (blazer likely tailored ca. 1974, pants in 1970) & faux tombstone (1969) photographed by yours truly at the woody guthrie center archives in tulsa, oklahoma, june 18th, 2026
