All you could remember before the incident was driving, crashing, then- nothing.
The rustling of sheets, and the coldness of the mattress beside you woke you from your slumber at around 4:30AM. With your face still buried into the warmth of your blanket, you reached a hand out to where Gator should've been asleep next to you, but he wasn't.
You heaved a long sleepy sigh, before tossing the covers off of you, and pushing yourself up.
From the bedroom, you could hear the very dramatic grunts and groans from the bathroom. You followed the noises with sleepy feet, and walked into the bathroom, squinting at the bright light.
Gators head snapped towards the door, the sight of you awake catching him off guard.
"Oh- Babygirl, wha'cha doin' up so early?" He spoke softly, approaching you in only his tactical pants, and undershirt.
"Mnn- you weren't in bed.." You yawned halfway through your sentence.
He snorted quietly, his hands reaching for your waist. His warm palms slotted your hips right against his, causing the rest of your body to slump forward onto him.
"Why're you leavin' so soon."
"Got work, lovebug." He murmured into your messy hair.
"You can't stay?" A huff of dissaproval.
"M'cant. Daddy's been on my ass recently."
You sighed into his undershirt, cheek smushed into the fabric. You looked adorable sleepy, hence one reason why he didn't want to leave.
"Needa go back to bed baby, yur' gon' be so sleepy." He mumbled, his voice rumbling through your body.
"Mm-hmm." You hummed, your voice catching, indicating you were close to falling back asleep.
He smirked to himself, watching you for a moment, before walking you back to bed. He tucked you in like you were a kid, then peppered soft kisses onto your face. There was always something soso special about the way he showed affection.
After he had finished getting ready for his long day at work, he made sure to stop by your bedside again to say goodbye.
His holster shuffled around his hips as he knelt down to brush hair away from your face, and kiss your cheek. His warm lips against your cool cheek woke you once more.
"Leavin'?" You whispered quietly, eyes still shut.
"Mhm." His tone had a hint of longing in it, you knew he didn't want to leave.
"Love ya' sweet girl. 'll be home round' 9, sound good?"
He chuckled to himself at your sleepy voice, barely able to respond to him. With one last kiss to your forehead, and a soft "love you", he was off for the day.
The station was pretty realxed. Officers occasionally passing down the hallway, or the sounds of mops hitting the floor. The station was never very busy, unless of an emergency of course-
Gators office was one of the largest. Being deputy gets you privileges. His desk was in the shape of an L, with 3 monitors, and atleast 4 stacks of binders- full of nothing but records, and reports.
Photos of you and him were scattered along the wood as well. Some you and him together, and some just you. It got lonely in here, better make the best of it.
Gator settled into his rolly chair, leaning over his desk to grab a binder from its organized slot, heavy with hundreds of cases he was way overdue to file.
Nearly half an hour goes by of his pen scratching loudly on the coarse sheets of paper, before his phone buzzes against the wood of his desk. His eyes instantly dart towards it, dropping his pen, and bringing it up to his ear.
"Talk t'me." He drawled into the speakers, fingers tapping onto the wood.
"Hey baby!" You quipp, your voice full of excitement.
"Ey' Mama." He hummed, a soft smirk pulling at his lips.
He reached for his pen once again, and continued writing onto the case papers whilst listening to your voice.
"I'm heading to the store, was just calling to see if you wanted anything for when you get home?" He could practically hear the smile on your face. God you were cute.
"S'nice of you babygirl. Pick me up one'a them raisin cookies. Use my card too. I put it in yur' wallet this morning." He murmured, heart swelling with affection.
"You sure baby?" You questioned
"Positive. Get whatever ya' want sweet girl."
"Okay! I love you, Gate." You giggled.
He chuckled at your little giggle. You thought of him everywhere you went, and that made him genuinely happy.
As the phone hung up, Gator heaved a heavy sigh. The shit you did for a dick like him. He could never wrap his head around it.
The following hours at the station were normal. Not too busy, not too quiet. He'd been in a few meetings, along with a quick 1 hour patrol after he'd finished up his paperwork.
Currently, Gator is sat in the drivers seat with his buddy Deputy Nugent in the passenger. They were currently scarfing down their lunch (like pigs wtf), while ogling about their girlfriends.
"Mhm. Angel, asked me what I wanted from the store earlier. Think she forgot the part where I get home at 9." Gator grinned, Nugent shared a soft chuckle.
"Yeah well mine-" Nugent started, but the crackle of Gator's walkie stopped them.
"All avaliable units to route 2. Chase escapee fired shots. Possible 10-54"
Gators grin slowly fell, and he swallowed the bite of food he had in his mouth. He glanced over at Nugent before clipping his seatbelt back into place, and speeding off.
"The fuck?" He mumbled, eyes glued ahead of him.
He switched his sirens on, the sound blaring across the busy streets of North Dakota. As he sped down the roads to the designated location, his heart was racing. His worst fear was that possible death, being you. He knew it was a slim chance but - It was still possible.
"On route now." Nugent murmured into his walkie, alerting the others that they were on the way.
Cars pulled off to the side of the roads, allowing Gator better access to fly down the roads.
"Right up here-" Nugent pointed to the pile of cruisers blocking the roads.
Gator swallowed harshly, sucking in a breath to mentally prepare himself. It was always rough seeing a body, or someone close to death. Even rougher if it was a loved one.
The cruiser swerved to a halt, and Gator quickly undid his seatbelt. He slid his revolver out of its holster, and drew his walkie back up to his mouth.
"Get out of your damn cars. Tellin' me theres a possible body, and we just sitting here. Pff." He scoffed.
At that, the other cops slid out of the cruisers, guns held high towards the car.
"Get out of the car, now!"
"Put your goddamn hands up!"
It was all a blur to Gator. He stepped out of the car, with the sudden rush of sickness. His gut was telling him something. He could feel his stomach churning. Nugent glanced at Gator, something was wrong.
Eventually, with shots fired towards the car, the two guilty stepped out, hands held high, before being shoved to the ground.
"Everyone! Get these two accessed, 3 of you, search the vehicle, Gator you go check on that wrecked vehicle, I'll join you in a second." Deputy Nugent yelled, and everyone immediately got to work.
Gator's heart was racing. Something caught his eye. The wrecked car looked almost identical to yours. Alot of people had Honda's .. right?
He walked over to the vehicle with careful, but speedy steps. His gun was held low, but loaded incase of danger. He approached the front of the vehicle and called out.
"Is anyone in this vehicle?" Gator called out.
When he was left with no response, he felt like throwing up. Either someone was dead, or they were unconscious. Either way-
Upon approaching the door of the vehicle, the airbags were busted, refraining him from being able to see anything but the white material.
From the broken side window, he carefully reached his hand in to unlock the door. Glass fell onto the road, along with the strong smell of feminine perfume. And god al 'mighty it smelt just like you.
With a thick swallow, he began to reach for the airbag, his fingers ripping out the plastic to see whoever was in the car. Deputy Nugent trotted up behind Gator.
"Gate. Hey, get to lookin', or we're gonna have a problem." He glared.
Once the airbag was out of the way, thats when he spotted a body, slouched over the console, blood splattered- He was gonna be sick. Nugent sucked in a breath, before speaking.
"Move her head, gotta know if she's identifiable. Check for a pulse-" He instructed, ready to jump in.
With a deep exhale, His shaky hands reached for the woman's head. But the second he was able to turn her head towards him, its like his entire world stopped.
His lips parted, and he stumbled backwards with a choked gasp. His worst fear coming to life. Because that was you. That was you in that car.
The way you looked traumatized him. Sure he'd seen some cruel things in the past but. God nothing like this. Your eyes were seeping blood, and your face with covered in bruises and cuts.
He didn't know how to react. What to do, or how to function.
"Gator-" Nugent sucked in a breath, watching him stumble and panic.
Nugent's hands shot out to grab your limp body, bringing you on to the road.
"Someone get an ambulance here!" Nugent's yells were urgent, and demanding.
"And-.. And god someone check on Gator."
A soft, pitiful whimper slipped past Gator's lips, and his chest started to heave. He could feel his throat closing. He didn't know what to do- He might've just seen your dead body. His girlfriends, dead body.
Everyone was running around, calling services, calling more cops down. Gator was nearly about to collapse.
Whitley ran up to Gator, hands shooting out to grab onto him. That usual tough act he put on had vanished. He just looked like a scared boy. Pitiful.
"No- no.. no-" He hiccupped, mouth opening and closing to talk, but all that was let out were those heavy pants.
"Sit down. Just sit down, Gator." Whitley murmured,
His knee's buckled at Whitley's words, and he hit the ground with a sob. Whitley's hand came up to rest on his shoulder, holding onto him in a firm manner,
Despite his panicking, and his sobs, he could hear another pair of footsteps rush up to them. Indira kneeled down beside Gator, and Tried her best to help reassure him. Though it didn't really help, since your battered body was just feet away from him.
"Gator- Man, you've gotta just breathe. Your gonna choke." Whitley added.
"No-. i-.. She's.." His words were cut off by a whine.
"Listen to him, Gator. Your hyperventilating honey, breathe with us." Indira mumbled, trying to focus him on his breathing.
After a moment, his hiccups turned into full blown wails. Nobody had ever seen Gator cry. This was probably the first time he's cried since he was in diapers.
Whitley pulled him into his arms, rubbing his back in long strokes.
"I'm sorry dude." Whitley mumbled, while Indira rubbed up and down his bicep.
The last thing you were able to recall, was being laid onto the road. You heard most of the sounds. You heard Gators sobs, you heard the ambulances rushing down the road..
Now you heard nothing. Nor did you see anything.
But you could feel. You knew you were laying down somewhere, and at first you thought it was your room. Perhaps your bed. But the room had a sterile smell to it. Like antiseptic.
You felt a hand gripped onto yours, and a forehead pressed against your collarbone.
One thing you noticed, was the amount of pain you were in. Your eyes felt like they'd been washed in rubbing alcohol, then set on fire. Your throat was dry and sore, and your whole body ached.
Your lips parted, then shut a couple times, trying your absolute hardest to speak. It took a couple tries, but with a swallow to try and wet your throat, you were able to croak out a few weak words.
"Gator.." Your voice was wobbly, weak, so fragile.
His head, which had been laying on your chest instantly rose. You were alive.
"Oh.. fuck." He breathed, his head dropping back down to your collarbone.
"I- I thought i lost you baby- I.. damnit." He sucked in a breath, his eyes watering with unshed tears.
You were scared to say the least. Terrified. You couldn't see, you could barely talk. And you were in a literal hospital!
"I.. I can't see anything- " You whispered, swallowed harshly to swallow down the wave of tears itching to leave.
His heart ached, and he rubbed a hand down his face at your words. He couldn't stop beating himself up over that. If only he couldn't been there earlier.
"I know babygirl. I-.. M'so sorry. I'm so sorry sweetgirl." He huffed, bringing his lips to your palm.
Your other hand slowly reached out to touch your face. When you felt a bandage wrapped around your head, slotted right where your eyes were, you couldn't stop the waterworks. You were fucking blind.
Tears slipped down your cheeks, mixed faintly with blood and medication. Why you?
"Don't- .. Fuck don't cry baby. Shh.." His hand reached out to cup your cheek.
"S'okay baby. Dont cry. Please don't cry." He whispered, his chin barely trembling.
"I.. I'm blind- I don't want to be blind.." You whimper.
He lowers his head onto your chest again, his ear right above your heart. He took both of your hands in his and held you close.
Even though you couldn't see anymore, that didn't mean he wouldn't try. He loved you just as much, and maybe just a bit more now.
"I'm scared." You whispered, fingers clenching around his.
"I know, I'm here. Yur' gonna be alright lovebug."
"Just fine." He murmured to you, to hopefully try to relax you. He knew how much his words had an effect on you, so he tried.
Life was about to be 10 times harder not being able to wake up and see your boyfriend anymore, or be able to do things on your own easily. What a day.
