When the woman speaks Julien turns his body fully to look at her. There’s something familiar about her voice and when he takes her in the memory of her scratches at his mind, familiar but not exactly someone he can recall easily. He thinks she’s someone he’s met before, maybe even slept with while he was self-destructing.

Still, he smiles at the mention of her daughter and glances at the baby, a cute little thing that’s enjoying the water happily. Julien kneels down and smiles at the child and then at her mother. “She’s very cute. How old is she?” He asks, tilting his head at her curiously. He’s never been particularly good with children, or at least the ones under five. The class he’s teaching now is full of kids but he seems to do okay with them.

And then, because he cannot get the idea that he knows this woman out of his mind he looks at her again. “Do we know each other?” He asks, unsure and hoping that the answer is both yes and no for some reason.

helen puts up her glasses at the question to take a moment to look at the man in front of her. her poker face is turned on the moment she studies him she recognizes him as the father of her child. she had found out long after their one night stand, and he was far too gone to get ahold of or to tell. she never had thought to see him again, and when gemma asked when she was older helen would have told her the truth. now it seemed that plan would no longer work. or helen herself could lie.

she turns her head after the moment, looking back to gemma. her glasses are once again on her nose. “she’s a few months on,” helen went on. she had to tread carefully. does she tell him he’s probably seen her somewhere on a poster? on the runway? the other still didn’t look like they had an ounce of class in their bones, but he was the father. (sadly)

“i’m not sure,” she went on, playing stupid. “i am a model, maybe on a billboard? have you been around paris, or even italy lately?”

a familiar face, though not one that brought her immediate joy. perhaps there was more envy in her treatment of helen than she cared to admit to herself. “oh, helen!” she smiled anyway, she had no real reason to dislike the girl. “just two weeks now, i was encouraged to enjoy some time off, and then get back to work. plenty of good caves to check out. if you’re looking for any new pieces, let me know.” it’d be incredible to get a commission from helen, she could earn a promotion with it most likely. “i hear congratulations are due.”

helen smiled at the other, she didn’t take note in the other’s not quite met joy. helen thought everyone liked her, she was beautiful. she was told all her life people would love her because of her beauty. it was naive, alarming for a 27 year old. “oh no,” she said, shaking her head. “i would not wish to bother you on your vacation, that would be silly and rude!” even though helen was itching to have a new piece and get something for little gem.

helen was minding her business with gemma beside her, she gave a quick thank you to the waitress as she set down the bag of food. she went out to lunch to make herself remember to eat, but gemma was having a small melt down with not having a toy to snuggle. she must have dropped it on the way in. good thing helen had plenty more. she was just reading into her diaper bag when she heard a voice.

“huh?” she asked, turning from her momentarily happy baby to the man in front of her. she moved some of her fringe that had fallen into her eyes as she looked down at the receipt on the bag. “oh fuck, it does. here.” she picked up the bag moving to towards the other.
