Overview Of A Face Seal Fitting
A face seal is nothing but a seal in which the sealing surface is normal to the seal axis. Face seal fitting is being widely used in static applications and is highly used in order to prevent leakages. The position of the face seal is in the cavity or groove on a flange. The different types of face seal fitting include O-ring fittings, C-ring fittings, E ring fittings, gaskets, and end face mechanical seal.
Let us understand some of the most widely used face seal fittings.
O-Ring Face Seal Fittings
Widely known as ORFS fittings, they include a tube nut, a fitting body, an O ring, and a sleeve. These fittings are used in order to find the prevent leakages in the outward direction. They are very unique because of the high reliability they offer than the conventional metal-to-metal connections. But, to remember, ORFS fittings hold a lot of restrictions to be followed regarding the temperature as well as fluid. The leakage of the system is not just dangerous to your system or your workers but also proves to be costlier. Even a single leak can cause a hefty amount and if there are multiple leak points in the system, then the overall cost will rise a lot while taking hundreds of dollars every year from your pocket.
Hence, ORFS has been the most widely used and trusted option to prevent leakage in the system. Whenever you want to make the ORFS connection, just ensure that the O-ring is precisely placed in the cavity. Also, the ring should also be lubricated so that there would be no friction with the component on either side. Thus, on average, you should be sure that the ORFS fitting should be properly fastened and tightened with the help of advised torque valves. Even after the arrangement, the leakage occurs, then you need to check a drained or missing part is there in the O-Ring.
Metal Gasket Face Seal Fittings
The metal gasket face seal fittings deliver high purity of a metal seal while providing genuine leakproof service from the vacuum. Also, it provides leak-proof service from the positive pressure as well. This kind of face seal fittings is very reliable in reassembling each time in order to lower down the downtime as well as maintenance costs. It has a test port built at the nut for a very easy test of leakage.
Additionally, each seal face along with male threads are completely secured with the plastic caps. However, you just have to remember that the working pressure solely depends upon the material of the gasket at room temperature. Hence, it is always advisable that the material with which the fittings would be manufactured should be of higher quality so that the outcome would be truly beneficial.
So, with the help of face seal fittings, all leakages in the system can be easily prevented. However, it would be always recommended to use high-quality material and check other factors as well that would cause leakage.
