So I guess I’m going to become one of those tandem nursing moms? Weaning has proven to be quite difficult as my babe is boob obsessed!!!! I thought upon getting pregnant that my milk would dry up completely at some point, which it does for a lot of women. But instead it just transitioned to a watery looking “milk” instead. When I didn’t dry up I thought “oh she will self wean at some point, the hormones will make my milk taste different and she probably won’t like it”.... nope. 32 weeks and she still acts like she needs to nurse as much as she did before I got pregnant. She has pretty much gotten the majority of her teeth since I’ve been pregnant so I know that doesn’t help with her even wanting to try to wean, she’s needed pain relief and comfort that comes from nursing, which I’ve been happy to give because it keeps us both calm and happy and gives me time to have a rest while pregnant which is so important. Thennnnn on top of getting all the molars and what not she got a virus just as I had basically night time weaned her, well then we had to revert back to letting her night nurse because she was inconsolable at night when she would wake up, which lasted about two weeks, so then she just got used to it again. But when she’s not sick she usually only wakes up like once MAYBE twice a night anyway. Lots of pros to tandem nursing: helps with sibling jealousy, can create a good bond for the siblings, makes the transition easier for the older sibling, both babes getting high quality nutrition, mom gets a good rest while nursing, older sibling helps keep the milk supply up and can help remove clogged ducts! Don’t get me wrong this is not gonna be for everyone I just wanted to do gentle weaning methods and she gave me all the cues that she didn’t want to wean at all. And my heart can’t take that. So here we are. More than likely going to enter a tandem nursing journey. Was this my plan? No. But I’m going to embrace it with open arms and if it all works out great, and if I end up abruptly weaning my girl then that’s okay too. But my hopes are it will all work out how I want it to with ease. I will have been pregnant or breastfeeding for 3 years next February. Here’s to hoping my little boy will self wean at 1 year. 😅
