get rid of "try" / "trying to" etc. "he was trying to ski." -> "he was skiing, just doing a shit job of it." goes for "starting" and other words that remove the actor from the action. if you're starting to do an action, you are simply doing it.

icr if i included this in my last post, but here it is again: words like "hears" "feels" "sees" etc (what i call sensing words, which may be what everyone else calls them but i've legit never talk to anyone about this) again removes the actor from the action and the reader from the action as well. "she heard a noise." okay... what did the noise sound like? where was it coming from? why was it so scary? "she heard a noise" -> "the noise from the kitchen was like a death rattle" -> "every creak of the floorboards signalled danger, where one step forward was one more towards death."

someone has already made a great post about this, but the convention of, "the taller one said this, and the blonde one said that," is used a lot in original fiction, especially historical fiction, but it's jarring to read it in fanfiction, so i would say just don't write like that. names are fine.
