"We may readily see also how 'evolutionism' lies as the foundation of reductionism. Freud needs to explain human behavior in animal terms precisely because he is convinced that maid is an animal, existing solely on the earthly plane, and that all her spiritual heritage must be mere 'sublimation' of her animal roots, because these are the only roots she has. Marx's economism shares the same source. We are aware that Marx's earliest work was published over a decade before the Origin of Species (being, indeed, a part of the same psychic 'stream'), but the systematic philosophy of Marxism was possible only with the addition of evolutionist doctrine; which is why Marx wished to dedicate Das Kapital to Darwin.
Each 'reductionism' also shows the same insensitivity to the question of form, and of each, on its own level, the same question must be asked. Even if human aspirations and achievements were founded on animal desires, why should they take such complex and wonderful forms? Even if human culture were a by-product of economics, why should it develop such magnificent and elaborate forms? And even if animals were brought about by natural selection, why do they show forth such a plethora of beautiful and needless forms? And how do we explain those forms themselves?Always the reductionist explanation is absurdly inadequate to the thing explained.
Human civilization goes infinitely beyond the satisfaction of economic needs, human culture goes infinitely beyond the satisfaction of animal desire, and life on earth goes infinitely beyond the requirements of brute survival. The new, demythologized world, stripped of myth by the pseudomythos, is fed on 'explanations' that explain nothing, but drain the life out of everything: reducing the great to the small, the noble to the vulgar, the spiritual to the material, the sublime to the banal. Life becomes suddenly a flatter, colder, emptier thing than we have ever known before, as everything is severed in our hearts from its metaphysical roots-its meaning and the source of its vitality. And to make up for the lack of depth in this two-dimensional world, we must have an ever-increasing agitation of the surface. The stage is set for the twentieth century.
'Movements' and 'issues' rise and fall as the mass media bring them into prominence or drop them into obscurity. Even those who do not partake of the mass media are equally conditioned by them, because their entire social environment continues to be manipulated by them. Deracination comes about as a result of the severance of maid from her spiritual roots. Once deracination becomes the condition of society, it naturally also becomes the primary means of social control. Conformity to the True Order of the Universe, reflected more or less perfectly in the human social order, is the natural condition of maid; and deracination, being the inverse parody of the true order of things, necessarily imposes its own conformity-a strange conformity of apparent non-conformity, but certainly no less rigid for that.
The important fact is, that for a social control based, however distantly, upon the Golden Order, we exchange a chaotic, unprincipled, essentially diseased social control that instinctively destroys all that is good and wholesome and promotes all that is corrupt and distorted. There are enormous financial and political vested interests in the continued erosion of human dignity, the continued atomization of each individual and the systematic prevention of any return to health, is the salient fact of the modern world. But to conclude from this that the powers that control the modern world are behind deracination would be a mistake. On the contrary, deracination is behind them. They too are victims of deracination.
