âSister Sila?!â Jacobus was caught off guard by the embrace, but returned it joyfully. âBy the Throne, when I saw the colors of the Sacred Rose, I thought perhaps I could get news of you, but to see you here!â Jacobusâ face twisted momentarily into a glare at the gawking soldiers, which set them right back to work. His glower returned to a smile as Sila straightened out his uniform. âWeâre getting the band back together again!â
He looked to both Malleus and Sila. âAs much as Iâd like to talk about where you both have been and what youâve been up to, Iâm afraid we still have a xenos infestation to deal with.â He waved a hand in the direction of the city. âPerhaps we could discuss it better at the Guard command center. Oh, and as Iâm sure my communications officer relayed to you, the buildings with the yellow Xâs are to be avoided, weâve placed explosive surprises for the xenos in them.â
The three make their way to the command center, passing fortified buildings with lasguns and heavy weapons protruding from windows. As they enter the command center, Sergeant Hiras snapped a salute to Colbert, then widened her eyes at the Space Marine and Sister of Battle. âLord Malleus! Sister Sila! Iâm not sure if you remember me, but Iâm glad to see you both again!â She bowed, then turned to Jacobus. âThe prisoner is awaiting you, Lord Commissar. Weâve established that he speaks Low Gothic, but thatâs about it.â Jacobus nodded in response.
âVarius! Go over our strategy with our old friends. Iâm going to make that xenos sing.â The Gunnery Sergeant saluted Jacobus, then bowed to the Sister and Astartes.
âMy lord, my lady, welcome to Ceral, largest city on Connat, and home to the planetâs Astropathic Choir. Before you arrived, the plan was a defense-in-depth, with the aim of eventually bringing the xenos into the city, where we could negate their ranged advantage with the terrain. Weâve booby-trapped some buildings, fortified others, hidden some tanks in garages and storage facilities for ambushes, and formed our light infantry into small, mobile assault teams for house-to-house fighting. Weâve blunted their assault at the line, with your help, but the center regiment was devastated. Weâre in the process of pulling the remaining line infantry back into the city to hold strongpoints. Any questions or concerns, my lord and lady?â
The Chapter Master smiled to Hiras as the trio passed. âAye, I remember you, Sergeant. Good to see youâre keeping our Lord Commissar alive.â The command center reminded him of his time as a scout, the dim glow of the lights and the cold stone walls making him almost wistful.
Malleus nodded in consideration of the plan laid before them. While he often preferred to be at the head of strategic efforts, he ceded that the Confessors had moved into action more on impulse than prior knowledge, so Connat itself was something of a mystery to them. âNothing from me, soldier. The Emperorâs Confessors are here in more of a support role this time. Point us where weâre needed and tell us what needs to be done. If you require additional armour, we have Rhinos and Dreadnoughts available.â There was a chime in his ear. âPardon me,â he raised a hand to Varius as he stepped away. âGo ahead.â
âThank the Emperor, I wasnât sure I was going to get through again,â the Saintâs captain sounded quite relieved. Raised voices were audibly in the background, but the alarms had ceased, so Mal was counting his blessings. âThe Tau have drawn back for the moment, Chapter Master, but pursuit wasnât an option; weâve sustained damage, not so much as to cripple The Saint, but enough that it requires attention. Some fatalities among the serfs, and a few casualties among the other crew. Fury have returned, undergoing repairs, and The Saint itself is still in orbit.â
âUnderstood, captain. Make sure to prioritise recovery, no doubt the Xenos will return and we need to dissuade a second attempt at combat. Emperor willing, this incursion will be ended quickly, and weâll need to be away as soon as we can. Keep Breaker and Fury on standby, along with the Rhinos and the Dreadnoughts, the whole lot might be required for siege breaking and further transport.â
âI hear you, Chapter Master. Stay safe down there.â
âGlad to see you again Hiras.â Sila walked alongside the pair of them listening intently, their plan was well thought out, trust Colbert and his team to come up with a solid plan of attack and defence. âIâll have some of my sisters join your assault teams for a little extra fire power, Iâm sure our flamers can be set to good cause herding them into the trapped buildings. Beyond that weâll defer to your planning since, as Mal pointed out, weâre here as support this time. Our arrival was not so much planned as springing on an opportunity.â Sila had just laid her helmet on a nearby bench when her personal squad caught up with her again, having attended to the wounded and the movement of the commandmant that had come to the surface, all were without helms at this point, the two that were armed with flamers remained outside, the rest had weapons mag clamped to their armour. âOur wounded are taken care of, nothing major, mostly surface wounds and the sisters all say theyâll be fighting ready.â âThank you sister Diana. Allow them to rest while they can, Iâm sure the xenos will be back sooner than later. They wonât have landed an army that size unless it mattered. Disperse those who want to among the guard as reinforcement, Sergent Hiras will point out the specific units to you.â Sila caught the flicker of unease on Dianaâs face before she nodded.
Varius nodded at Malleus, then turned to Sila. âMy thanks, mâlady. Sisters of Battle should give our assault teams quite a punch.â He waited for Malleus to finish communicating with the ship. âNot to sound insubordinate, my lord, but if your space marines could fill a similar role as the sisters, Iâm confident our assaults will be unstoppable.â
Jacobus emerged from the doorway, tau blood on his hands. âWell, I doubt weâre getting much more out of that alien. I did manage to extract the fact that the presence of Space Marines and Sisters of Battle threw a wrench into their plans, they thought they were facing a lightly defended agri-world. We now now more about their composition, as well. They have yet to deploy their Kroot and Vespid auxiliaries, or their broadside battlesuits. Whatâs more, weâve learned that there one of their ethereals has command of the coalition, and he remains at their first landing point.â
Varius snapped a salute to the Lord Commissar. âMy lord, your original plan has been met with approval. I think it best we stick to the tactic of bringing them into the city. Their broadsides and riflemen will be easily ambushed in the city environment, leaving only the Kroot and the Vespids to threaten our infantry.â
Colbert nodded. âGet Teryan on the vox, I want to know the status of our tanks.â The vox officer worked furiously, and handed his headset to the commissar. âGeneral Teryan, what is your status?â Jacobus heard cheers in the background.
âThis is the general, weâve routed their armor, thanks to the Astartes air support and Sororitas armor. Our tanks have a free hand on Connat now. Where are we needed?â
âIâll send you coordinates, Iâll tell you when to make your attack, however. Hold position at the forthcoming coordinates and wait for my signal.â He turned to Malleus. âI think we have the perfect role for your armor, my lord. If we time it right, we can send the armor to their main dropping off point while their attack on the city is underway, leaving their ethereal lightly defended. Marines in Rhinos would be perfect for capturing that xenos, and it might just tip the balance in our favor.â

Jacobus nodded at the question. âSector command, in their infinite wisdom, has ordered us to take this hive as intact as possible. It doesnât have nearly the output of a forge world, but there are several manufactorums in the hive, including one that builds tanks. Weâll only be bombarding the outer positions. Fire missions after the initial assault will be denied if they are called on any of the production facilities. Weâre going to isolate and bypass them if theyâve been fortified by the enemy. A notable exception is the PDF armory.â The armory was highlighted on the map. âIf we canât capture it, weâll destroy it, denying the cultists whatever weapons they havenât looted.â He highlighted the underhive on the map. âItâs also likely that the brood lord is hiding in the underhive, as that has been the pattern of behavior noted in other cults. A bombardment likely wonât reach that far into the hive, so weâll have to go in. To this end, weâre keeping the light infantry regiments in reserve, theyâll invade the underhive after weâve got a foothold in the city. Gangs abound down there, potentially hostile, but also potential allies, as I doubt they think the cultists are their friends. Further concerns?â
âNo further concerns.â None that needed to be brought up in front of other officers anyway. âThe legion will serve as directed, issued what weapons are available. Use their lives carefully Lord Commissar. Even their lives have value.â
The Royal Bastards would find the gangs and convince them to join in. Shock mauls and survival could be very convincing. The time for subtlety and infiltration was long gone. Brute force would have to win the day. Controlling the gangs of that world would have to wait for people not officially connected to the Ferroxian organization but still under its control or influence to act.
âAnyone else?â Jacobus looked around the room, and the officers made no sound in response. âVery well, you all know your orders. Be ready to depart at the appointed hour. Dismissed.â The officers began filing out of the room. Jacobus turned off the projector, and turned to Lord Pendleton. âWill you join me in the officerâs mess? I try to make a point of getting to know the commanding officers before I fight alongside them.â
Francis nodded acquiescing to the request. He did not truly want to meet with Jacobus. Most Imperials he had met in military professions were fanatics of one sort of the other. Glory hounds who cared little about who died to achieve their goals or blind trust that somehow a dead man in resplendent chair could somehow affect victory. The gods were either dead, uncaring, or chaos entities in the warp. Nothing worth worshiping.
âYou will have to show me the way. Not all ships have the same layout.â
Colbert smiled. âGood! Iâll show you the way, fortunately itâs close by, unlike everything else on this ship.â He began strolling at a steady pace. âSo, what brings a man of noble bearing such as yourself to command a penal world?â
âThe same thing that brings any of us anywhere. Divine providence and a sick joke.â To say Francisâs eyes were cold and dark would be an understatement. He had seen everything the universe had to offer and been impressed by none of it. Words could not adequately describe the horrors he had witnessed in his short life.
âOr competence.â
âThatâs one way of looking at it.â Not the information Jacobus was looking for, but it clued him in that this was a man who played his cards close to the chest. A wise outlook, Colbert thought, but ill-suited to the Astra Militarum, where trusting the man or woman next to you is a key ingredient to survival, let alone victory. He pointed at a doorway, with a placard that read Officerâs Mess. The room was better furnished than the enlisted menâs mess, and the sickly sweet smell of lho-sticks being smoked filled it. Jacobus had soon found a booth, and offered a lho-stick to Francis. âAny other notable campaigns youâve taken part in, Lord Pendleton?â

(Closed RP) Rebel Rebels
Jacobus pondered the map of the rebel hive on Orim. The rebels had renounced the Emperor in favor of what they called the âGreat Wyrm.â When they first rebelled, they were armed with simple autoguns, but after capturing the local PDF armory, they were well stocked with lasguns, tanks, and sentinels. The rebels had soon slaughtered the ruling council of Orim and even the Astropathic choir, but not before the choir sent a message of distress to sector command. Colbert expected the rebels to be well entrenched by now, and any attempt to dislodge the rebels would result in costly guard casualties.
The Lord Commissar thought for a moment, then began writing up a requisition request. If Colbert could get some penal legions assigned to the Imperial forces assaulting the hive on Orim, they would likely save more valuable professional guardsman lives by their sacrifice. After all, was it not their place to die for the Emperor? He also made sure to include a request for more commissars from the Oficio Prefectus, as these penal legions would likely require greater supervision than regular soldiers.
Requests for penal legionaries were not uncommon. Whenever a mine field needed clearing or defenses had to be felt out before more legitimate soldiers were sent in it was the penal legions duty to comply. If the Administratum and Astra Militarum could not agree on where to send them it somehow fell to Lord Francis Pendleton to send the legionaries of Ferroxian into a warzone to die for that corpse entombed in the Golden Throne of Terra.Â
The dart board selected Orim as the place lucky enough to receive those lucky enough to volunteer to leave the mines to die somewhere else. The Ferroxian Legionaries and the Royal Bastards were going to ensure that Orim was brought back into compliance and if some of his agents found their way into the local gangs to bring them into the Ferroxian organization then so be it. Preparations would be made.
In the hangar of the Emperor class battleship Imperial Promise, hovering in orbit over Orim, Jacobus Colbert observed a shuttle landing. The Lord Commissar and his inner circle watched as the shuttle opened its doors and out stepped a man that Jacobus believed to be the commanding officer they were waiting for. âLord Pendleton? Lord Commissar Jacobus Colbert, itâs a pleasure to make your acquaintance. Your Legionaries are a welcome sight, Iâm sure they will prove instrumental in the assault on the rebel hive.â They made their way to the briefing room, where several generals stood around a holo-map of the hive city.
âLadies and gentlemen, this is Hive Rath, home of the rebels who have forsaken our savior. They captured the local PDF armory, and are now well-armed and dangerous. Whatâs worse, the Astropathic Choir described four-armed xenos monstrosities among the rebels before they were murdered. All signs point to this being more than a simple secession effort. This is a Genestealer Cult. If we do not squash this uprising, the Tyranid swarms will soon be on this world in force.â He highlighted the edges of the city on the map. âThe rebels are entrenched around the city. The plan is that the penal legions will be sent in first, then when the rebels open fire and reveal their positions, we flatten them with Basilisks and Manticores. After their forward positions are smashed, weâll move in with regular guardsmen to begin urban combat operations. The ultimate goal is the location and destruction of the brood lord. No easy task, but itâs our only hope of removing this world from the Hive Fleetâs path. Any questions?â
Whoever this Lord Commissar Jacobus Colbert was he was either supremely confident, did not have good security, or already knew who he was. Â Colbert had just assumed he was this Lord Pendleton fellow and walked off without waiting for any sort of reply. Â He could be a genestealer or some sort or a body double. Â If all it took was a uniform to infiltrate a command center there would be issues. Â On the other hand maybe the man lived in a place that did not orbit a penal world and such precautions were unnecessary. Â Lord Pendleton was the name he went by. Â It was a name he had taken so long ago he sometimes forgot what his real name was.
âIf you intend on flattening the city anyway with Basilisks and Manticores why not just bombard the city from orbit and pick through the wreckage later?â
Jacobus nodded at the question. âSector command, in their infinite wisdom, has ordered us to take this hive as intact as possible. sisterofthesacredrose:
âFlamers! Advance! Press our advantage, pick off the stragglers, push them back!â Came Silaâs command over the vox, her flamers came to the fore, the reek of promethium coming with them and they began to wash the battle field with the blessed flames, xenos flesh bubbling from within armour and nech suits. A no so lucky fire warrior found itself isolated from it comrades and face to face with Sila, itâs side arm came up and it managed to get a couple shots off, clipping her thigh and chest armour, Sila ducked and charged the xenos, unable to mag clamp her bolter away in such a short time she used itâs bulky form as blugeon to smash the weapon from the tauâs hands, striking again quickly at itâs chest to send it stumbling backwards so she could unleash a tight burst of shots at itâs center of mass, itâs matter splattering the ground as itâs form crumpled to a heap.
Scanning the field she picked out a commissar leading from the front, their back turned so she couldnât make out the face, but stance and behaviour seemed familiar, an eyebrow quirked before her gaze was pulled elsewhere, enemy elements were retreating, fighting the whole way, and the guardsmen were chasing them down. But if they over stretched their line would weaken. âReinforce the guard line, strengthen and push the xenos back, Give No Ground.â
In what seemed like a heartbeat, it was done; the Tau were routed, either dead or dying, and the Confessors took it upon themselves to finish the ones lacking the good sense to die immediately. Vaeger had the scouts do the same, and a wide spread of smiles emerged as they realised that soon they would be scouts no longer. Malleus picked himself up from the shattered remnants of another stealth suit, a couple of devastated plates sliding from the armour as he moved. The Chapter Master breathed heavily through his vox grille, the adrenaline zen slowly dumping from his brain. As he returned to his consciousness, his eyes scanned the ruined, still-burning field for the Lord Commissar, whose voice he could have sworn he recognised.
Locating the peaked cap, he approached at a quick stride and pulled off his helmet as he drew up to the man. âJacobus? Jacobus Colbert? Is it truly you, Commissar?â The corners of the Marineâs mouth curled into a grin. âItâs been some time, Lord Commissar, glad to see you still fight, and viciously, as ever.â He called over to Vicon. âSee that the Guardsmen are aided and reinforced however necessary, brother. Theyâve dealt a blow today.â
It was then that he remembered heâd lost sight of Sila in the haze. Heâd heard some of the Sisters react to hits, but he was never sure who it was. Thankfully, she made her way to the two as they spoke. His eyes focussed as she reached them, peering down at the scorches on her armour. She seemed well enough, but he wanted to be sure. âThose look rough, are youâŚ?â
Guardsmen began to stalk the battlefield, finishing off any dying Tau. Jacobus barked an order to his soldiers. âIf you find one thatâs only wounded, bring the xenos filth to me. I have some questions for it.â
He heard what sounded like a familiar voice come from behind. âMy lord Malleus?â He grinned back at the Chapter Master. âIt has been too long, my lord. Itâs an honor to fight alongside you again!â He nodded in response to the Astartesâ orders. âMy thanks, sir. Now weâve got a fighting chance to destroy these xenos once and for all.â
Araleth Hiras called out to the commissar. âLord Commissar! Weâve found a live one.â
âExcellent. Sergeant, take him to the bastion and get one of my officers to begin the interrogation. I will personally take charge of it when I return.â Hiras nodded, then ordered two guardsmen to transport the xenos to the headquarters. A helmeted Sororitas made her way towards the Chapter Master and Lord Commissar. âHail, noble sister. The zeal of your warriors inspires us all.â Something about the gait of the sister reminded him of someone he knew before, and he wondered if perhaps an old friend was among the force of Sororitas on Connat.
She was looking over her shoulder at the dead, thankfully no sisters were among them⌠this time, but some had still sustained injuries. Her gaze slid back to the figures she was walking towards before her head actually turned, a habit she had while wearing her helmet, the motion seemed to smooth and like a predator focusing on unwitting prey. âMake sure we have eyes on our perimeter, we donât want the filth creeping back while our backs are turned, no doubt they will reform and try again.â She spoke over the sororitas encypted vox channel, to distracted by her own ongoing duties to register the commissar in front of her until she had come to a stop next to Malleus, whom she casually flapped a hand at, knowing full well he was just fussing and knew the scrapes were just superficial. She was already preparing herself mentally to deal with the politics that came with dealing with guardsmen, it was notoriusly hard to manage whenever she had had to deal with them. She squinted for a moment at the commissar wondering if the targeting system was glitching out. âNo! Emperor protects, it is you.â She pulled off her helmet and grinned, crossing the distance between the two of them and pulling the man into a brief but strong embrace. âOf all the worlds and wars, to think you stand before me still alive.â She looked Colbert over and casually straightened his jacket where her hug had misaligned it, coughing awkwardly as she caughted the shocked looks of some of the infantry that stood around them, to see a Sororitas act so casually and informal. âGood to see you again old man.â
âSister Sila?!â Jacobus was caught off guard by the embrace, but returned it joyfully. âBy the Throne, when I saw the colors of the Sacred Rose, I thought perhaps I could get news of you, but to see you here!â Jacobusâ face twisted momentarily into a glare at the gawking soldiers, which set them right back to work.
Any questions or concerns, my lord and lady?â

âFlamers!

General Teryan looked at the sky from the cupola of his Leman Russ. A Sun Shark bomber was bearing down on his convoy now. He turned the pintle-mounted storm bolter towards the oncoming aircraft, firing desperately. Just then, the sound of heavy bolters punctured the air, and the Tau bomber burst into flames, crashing a few yards to the left of the convoy. A Stormhawk interceptor in the colors of the Emperorâs Confessors chapter flew past the convoy, bringing others in its wake as they tore through the offending xenos aircraft. Looking back to the convoy, he saw several armored vehicles in the colors of the Order of the Sacred Rose engaging the enemy tanks. Multi-meltas and heavy flamers turned Hammerhead gunships into burning scrap metal. The General could hear cheers over his com-link. He couldnât help but smile himself.
âMany thanks for the assist, my lords and ladies. What do you say we turn this retreat into a counter-attack? If we can take out their armored forces, the infantry at Ceral will stand a better chance.â
Meanwhile, at the Imperial lines around Ceral, the guardsmen were ready for the battle to finally come to them. A heavy bolter gunner spotted the Space Marine scouts moving hurridly back to their lines, a wave of Tau infantry and Drones following close behind them. âGet word to the mortars! Tell them to drop some smoke shells behind those scouts!â The mortar officer read out the coordinates, then the teams sent smoke shells flying to hit just behind the Space Marines.
The gunner also noticed a strange sight. The air in a particular spot seemed to shimmer in the daylight. He pointed this out to Corporal Ises, who also was there in preparation or the fighting, and who knew exactly what that shimmer meant!
âSTEALTH SUITS!â she cried and opened fire on the nearest anomaly, which crackled with static and fell to the ground, visible as a Tau battlesuit. Other stealth suits appeared and decloaked extremely close to the trench, which lit up with plasma and las fire.
The thunder of armoured warriors broke over the din of gunfire and screams as the Confessors and the Sacred Rose rushed the line, their own roars filtering through vox grilles to somehow sound even more fearsome. Malleus took the head of the attack with Sila close behind, the adrenaline coursing through him as he sighted the enemy. Let them know repentance through death, Malleus told himself as he stamped past the forward-most Guardsmen, emerging wraith-like through the smoke grenades, and threw himself shoulder-first into one of the Tau, sending the pair towards the ground with a whine of grinding metal. The Chapter Master was already a flurry of fists and chainsword teeth before they had even come to rest, the Tau crumpling under his superior weight and reaching a rather undignified end, lacking the wherewithall to defend itself against the sudden attack.
The rest of the joint Confessor-Sacred Rose strike force followed through the smoke, flamers belching great gouts of promethium and various bolt weapons sounding out the quick death of further Tau before the Marines followed their commanderâs example, falling upon the Xenos with the ferocity of Land Raiders. âDESTROY THEM!â Malleus howled to his men. âNO RESPITE, NO RETREAT, BRING THEM THE EMPERORâS MERCY!â The Marines shouted out their assent as the violence continued unabated. The scouts had taken up the role of supporting and defending the Guardsman line, picking off the Tau that attempted to bypass the sudden wave of ceramite and aggression that had appeared in favour of thinning out the front line.
The sisters tanks moved into position along side the guards, placing their flamer units along the flanks to herd any enemies into the line of fire, the revered exorcist lay at the back, itâs vast organ shaped missile launchers vented steam ready to lay down more fury upon the enemy.
Silaâs forces stopped short of the trench edges and unleashed bolter rounds into the stealth suits that hadnât been smashed to the ground by the Confessors. The return fire from the tau started to graze the front line, a sister was twisted around as a pulse rifle shot took her in the shoulder, she ended up in a kneeling crouch, bringing her bolter up to bare she unleashed round into the xenos troops. Sororitas with flamers slung their weapons their usefulness not yet within reach and opened fire with their sidearms.
â For it is He who delivers you  from the lies of the heretic, And from the deadly pestilence. He will cover you with his armor, And under His Throne may you may seek refuge; His faithfulness is a shield and bulwark.â Sila herself started singing, distorted slightly by the extrenal vox of her helmet but it was slowly picked up by the sisters who surrounded her, until every womanâs voice had joined the chorus. â You will only look on with your eyes, And see the recompense of the wicked. Ave Imperator.â Warnings flashed in Silaâs helmet as it registered a shot that had only just missed her, scorching through the fur mantle that adorned her shoulders. âWE ARE HIS WRATH, HIS FURY!!â She bellowed in defiance.
Teryanâs tanks opened fire on the Tau gunships, the din from the guns of the Imperial tanks creating a rumble akin to a thunderstorm. The Sororitas Immolators spewed jets of flaming promethium, forcing the gunships to retreat or be cut off, easy prey for the remaining armor. âForward!â Ordered General Teryan. âLetâs make for their armored staging point and annihilate it! For the Emperor!â
Corporal Lysandra Ises let loose another burst from her heavy bolter, turning a Tau warrior to a bloody pulp. Behind her, Ace blasted a Stealth Tau with his shotgun. Guardsmen at this section of the line fought ferociously, all the more because of the legendary warriors they fought beside. The singing of the Sororitas had a calming effect on the guardsmen, who fought all the more disciplined thanks to their quieted minds. The sight of fully armored Astartes barreling into the Tau lit a fire in the guardsmen had no small impact on morale as well. Bayonets found their way into Tau flesh, and lasbolts found their mark. Yet the Tau kept coming, and more fire warriors began pouring pulse fire into the Imperial line. Drones appeared in the air above the guardsmen, firing into the trenches with deadly accuracy.
Jacobus had assigned Colonel Maclir of the Varam line regiment as the coordinator of the army in his absence. As great an impact as the Sororitas and Astartes had on the guardsmen, he knew this was where the tau were aiming to punch through, and they needed every advantage they could get.
It wasnât long before he appeared on the front lines, power sword drawn and bolt pistol in his hand. A bolt shell sent one of the Tau suits spinning around to collapse in a heap, and he thrust his power sword into an oncoming stealth suit commander. The stealth suits were being mopped up, but they had done heavy damage to the line. Looking at the space marines tearing through the xenos in close combat, he decided on a course of action. âGuardsmen! Fix bayonets! Weâre joining the Space Marines! AHU!â He knew his old regimentâs battle cry wouldnât register with the soldiers, but it built his own confidence every time he said it. The guardsmen let up a shout, and then charged into the fray. Soon enough, the Tau who were still moving up to the fray saw their comrades being cut down, and began to withdraw. The guardsmen, busy with the melee, did not notice.

No sooner had Jacobus saluted the scout sergeant than one of the vox-operators frantically tried to get his attention. âSir! Youâre going to want to hear this!â Jacobus rushed to the vox unit and immediately put on a pair of headphones. The color drained from his face as he heard General Teryanâs panicked voice on the other end of the line.
âTeryan here! Weâve been found out! They landed Hammerheads not far from our armored depot and theyâre tearing our armor apart. Many of the tank crews couldnât make it to their tanks in time. Weâre making a fighting retreat to Ceral, but theyâve brought Sun Sharks to hit our columns from the air! We need-Feth! Here they come again!â Jacobus heard the unmistakable sound of exploding tanks on the other end of the line. âI donât know if weâll make it to the city! We need support! Out.â The line closed. Jacobus tore off the headphones. Another guardsman at a separate vox unit also got Colbertâs attention.
âSir! Weâve spotted a landing party at the point we designated as the most likely xenos landing zone! Theyâre offloading infantry and drones, theyâll be on us in less than an hour!â
âFeth.â Jacobus spat. âThey must have hidden in the asteroid field on the other side of the planet. Now theyâre probably sending Orcas to land troops to attack the capital and hover tanks to attack our reserves. Get the Space Marine commander on the vox! Tell him we are humbly requesting any dogfighting aircraft be sent to the coordinates of our armored regiments retreat path! And you! Get all guardsmen to their fighting positions! Weâre in it now, boys and girls!â
In orbit, the Tau fleet emerged from the other side of the planet, some ships making their way to attack the Astartes battle barge.
âChapter Master, this is The Saint.â A female voice spoke into Malleusâ head. She sounded concerned. âTau ships detected in Connatâs vicinity.â
The Marineâs eyes widened. âWhat?! How-â
âAsteroid field, sir.â The blare of sirens punctuated the seriousness of her tone. âAll hands are moving to their stations.â
âBring them down, Captain. Even if they hold us off down here, they will have no escape and no assistance from above, do you hear me?â
âAlways, Chapter Master. Vae victis.â The line closed and Malleus opened the one to the forward scouts.
âVaeger, co-â He was answered by the chunk of bolters and the cracking report of shotguns.
âAlready found them, Chapter Master! Caught them off-loading equip- Reegan, watch your left, cut down those damn Xenos! Weâre doing damage here, Malleus, but we loaded for reconnaisance, not a full firefight!â Plasma bolts whizzed past Vaeger as he spoke.
âSend us your coordinates and pull back, Vaeger! Second Company will rotate and keep the pressure on them!â
âAye, Chapter Master, moving now! Keep the fire up and your heads low, the Chapter Master wants us ou-â The vox channel dropped out. Malleus hoped that the loss of communication was only temporary. He turned to Sila.
âFound them. Down here and up in orbit. Bastards were sitting in an asteroid field and the scouts have just located a drop zone, equipment and personnel both.â
It was Viconâs turn to shout up from across the makeshift yard in the middle of the base. âMalleus, vox from the Guard! Theyâre requesting air support to cover their armour, as soon as possible!â
The Chapter Master cursed before hearing from yet another voice. âChapter Master, this is Fury One, the Captain scrambled us as soon as the alarms began. We have Fury Two and Three in formation, where are we needed?â âYour timing is uncanny, Fury One. Vicon has your area of operations, heâll give you the details.â Fury One acknowledged and closed the vox, leaving Malleus to rally members of Second Company to mobilise towards the scouts with the intent of leapfrogging them to combat the Tau forward units. He smiled toward Sila in the midst of the activity. âNow or never, little Sister, time to fight!â
Sila unclamped her helmet from her back and slid it over her head, taking a second for her bionic to link up with the helmets targeting systems, blink clicking the vox to the tanks yet to land. âAll armoured units converge on the guards armour, exorcist and my immolater included, drop it at maximum range and keep those xenos off our allies until they can re group. Support them further as you see fit.â She didnât wait for a confirmation already knowing that her orders would be followed regardless of what happened next, scooping up her bolter from the table she check the load of the clip. âYouâre a cause for concern sometimes Mal.â She shot at the marine that was grinning at her, voice coming from her helmets external speaker, but had she not been wearing the helmet the smile would have been mirrored on her own face. âLets get going, and hope the guardsmen have left us some xenos to turn to ash.â Sila marched from the base, her personal retinue of celestians following her like white phantoms, armed with bolters and heavy flamers.

Jacobus busied himself overseeing preparations for what he anticipated to be a bloody battle against cunning alien opponents. He had advised the general to deploy the 22nd Varam Line infantry in defensive positions around the capital, Ceral. He chuckled in spite of himself. This city would barely qualify as a neighborhood in the great hives that Jacobus had seen in his career. The other two line infantry regiments, the 63rd Namar and the 9th Cetrati, were to guard the flanks of the Varamites. General Teryan had deployed the two light infantry regiments, the 7th and 80th Marathis, within the city, which had been largely evacuated.
Jacobusâ own inner circle were hard at work as well. Gunnery Sergeant Varius Nerus was seeing to the fortification effort around the city, barking orders and pitching in as needed. Corporal Lysandra Ises was seeing to the heavy weapons deployments within the city, ensuring every street was covered with a heavy bolter or autocannon. Sergeant Araleth Hiras was preparing homes for the fighting that was sure to come, marking the booby-trapped buildings with a yellow painted X. Corporal Silas Korlus, also known as âAceâ was assigned a special role. He was in charge of concealing the tanks of the 54th and 71st Corol Armored regiments. Several garages concealed about two companiesâ worth of tanks within the city itself, but the bulk of the armored vehicles were stationed far from the city and the likely landing site of the Tau. General Teryan would personally lead this armored group to strike at the enemyâs rear echelons and landing site to relieve forces that would likely be fighting within the city itself.
Jacobus sighed. He had done what he could. Preparations would likely be finished by the time the Tau landed, but how long could they hold out? Not long, save for intervention by the Emperor himself.
But some Space Marines or Sisters of Battle would be fine if they happened to show up to. Colbert laughed at the thought. âIf only, if only.â
The first Thunderhawk roared into the atmosphere with its payload of scouts. The pilot opened a vox channel to the second craft. âApproaching landing zone⌠no hostiles⌠no locals, eitherâŚâ It touched down. âDeploying now.â The scouts disembarked and the Sergeant leading them tapped into the same channel. âGreen light, Breaker Two. Are you deploying immediately, or do you want a report first?â Entry at night had certainly ended up being the better choice. Between that and Silaâs amended landing point, the scouts would have little trouble carrying out their duties. There was a collective clack as the group checked their armaments, bolters and shotguns as befitting the chapterâs combat doctrine, along with the odd strap being adjusted on armour.
âBreaker Two here,â the pilot of the second Thunderhawk responded. âNegative, Sergeant, weâll be right on your heels. Landing in two minutes.â The eagerness was palpable among the passengers aboard Breaker Two, the Thunderhawk carrying the veteran contingent of the Second Company, along with their Chapter Master. Breaker Two was followed by another four Thunderhawks, two carrying an additional force of Confessors, and the other two transporting the Sororitas who had chosen to be part of the action.
Sure enough, two minutes later, the four vessels had set down and their cargo emptied from within. A group of Marines and Sisters got to work setting up the planned forward base, the intent being to first establish contact with any military presence in the area. âChapter Master, Scout Sergeant Vaeger,â a voice mumured in Malleusâ ear.
âTalk to me, Sergeant. What do you see?â
âAbout an hour out from our landing zone. We see Imperial uniforms; Guardsmen, from the looks of it. Armourâs intact, looks like we might be boots-on-the-ground before the Xenos.â
Malleus heaved a relieved sigh. It sounded as though they wouldnât have to be traipsing across the entire planet after all. âGood. Make contact, Sergeant. No doubt they saw us coming in, but we should link up all the same, no reason to make the situation any trickier.â
âAs you say, Chapter Master. Let me know when you have planetside communications up, weâll have the Guardsmen hook in. Vaeger out.â The Scout Sergeant gestured for his men to approach the camp, and the group rose from their cover with their weapons stowed. Vaeger lifted a hand and called out to the soldiers.
Gunnery Sergeant Varius Nerus was working on shoring up an earthwork when one of his guardsmen pointed out the figures approaching the guardsmen from cover. âLook, sir! Space Marines! Weâve got reinforcements after all!â
Varius Nerus widened his eyes in surprise. He stepped up to a firing platform, and sure enough, several Space Marine scouts were making their way toward the fortification, weapons holstered. âWelcome to Connat, my lords! If it pleases you, Iâm sure the Lord Commissar will want to know of your arrival. Iâll show you the way.â
The guardsman lead the scouts toward the bastion command center at the heart of the city. Colbert emerged from the center, and immediately saluted the Astartes. âGood to see the Emperorâs finest here, my lords. Lord Commissar Jacobus Colbert at your service. Corporal!â A guardsman emerged from the bastion. âSee to it that these Astartes are hooked into our Vox network. Now, I take it you would like to know what we plan to do to hold this collection of houses.â He proceeded to explain what preparations the guardsmen had enacted, and then addressed the scout sergeant. âIâm more than open to suggestions, of course, my lord.â
âWell and good, Lord Commi-â The Scout Sergeant was interrupted.
âCommunications are live, Scout Sergeant. Status?â The voice was Viconâs. Vaeger put a finger to his ear.
âThe Lord Commissar has taken us through his plan. Seems sound enough. Their man has us linked into their network, so he should be able to go over the strategy with you. Is the forward base operational?â
âAye. The Chapter Masterâs teeth are itching at the thought that this whole thing might be drawn out, but weâre as ready as we need to be.â
âGood. Should we remain with the Guardsmen, or would we be best off continuing on?â
Malleus interjected. âCarry on, Vaeger. While our friends may have a sense of the problem, Iâd like to ensure our knowledge is as up-to-date as possible. If the Guardsmen wish to send a squad to liaise in person, mark our position for them. Either way, push on.â
Vaegerâs attention turned to his crew. âYou heard the man, new blood. Chapter Master Malleus doesnât like to be kept waiting. Weâre moving on, need as clear a picture of the place as we can achieve.â He took up a spare map from the table and circled a small area of the grid laid upon it. âIf need be, Lord Commissar, you can find our forward base here. Our communications are established, so you should be able to link in when youâre ready.â The scouts hefted their weapons back over their shoulders. âLook after yourself, Lord Commissar, and good hunting.â The group started for the undergrowth on the opposite side of the camp from which theyâd entered.
Sila stood infront of a holographic projection of the planet that was set up in their command center and eyed off the planet suspiciously, something wasnât right, from all the calculations the xenos should have arrived before them, their fleet should have intercepted the Tau in orbit, but there still wasnât a sign of them. âHave our tanks been brought to the surface yet?â She idly asked over her shoulder at one of her celestines that shadowed her constantly now they were on the ground. âShortly maâam, theyâre just breaking atmosphere now. Theyâll deploy alongside the guards armoured reserves. Your personal Immolator and our venerated exorcist will deploy just behind us here.â âGood.âShe turned from the projection of the planet and walked over to the long range vox caster, tapping the occupants shoulder to get his attention. âAsk the Captain to check our long range Auspex for enemy contact, something doesnât feel right.â The man nodded and relayed her message. âScanners confirm no reading, Captain suspects cloaking and has sent out some of the scouting ships to seek them out.â âThank you. I trust should they be found they will be dealt with, should boarding actions be required, my sisters know what is required of them.â With that she left and walked back to the holotable to glare down the planet, as an after thought she switched her com bead back on.
No sooner had Jacobus saluted the scout sergeant than one of the vox-operators frantically tried to get his attention. âSir! Youâre going to want to hear this!â Jacobus rushed to the vox unit and immediately put on a pair of headphones.

Lord Commissar Jacobus Colbert was feeling nervous, to say the least. The Astra Militarum had landed on the world of Agri-World of Connat in preparation for an incoming Tau offensive. Colbert knew that the troops assigned to the planet would be ill-equipped to handle anything larger than a Tau Commune. He had passionately argued for more regiments, but he was promised only 7 full strength regiments, only two of which were armored, the rest being line and light infantry. God-Emperor help them if the Tau arrived with a Coalition.
He had studied the terrain of the world. With itâs gentle rolling hills and relatively small population centers, the place would have been perfect for armored combat. With the relatively small number of tanks the battlegroup had, the commanding officer, General Teryan, would have to keep them in reserve, lest they be destroyed too quickly. Jacobus trusted Teryan to act competently, as the man was a veteran officer, but the commissar knew that competency could only go so far against what was coming.
Jacobus walked into the bastion command center, carrying a datapad with ominous information. The guardsmen guarding the tent snapped a salute to the Lord Commissar, then returned to their posts. Teryanâs weathered face looked up from a map of the largest continent on Connat and smiled at Jacobus. âWhat news, commissar?â
Jacobus, a tense expression on his face, simply handed the general the datapad. As Teryan read over the document, his expression darkened. âDamnation. These reports have been confirmed?â
âYes, General, I fear we are facing a full strength Tau Coalition. If the prognosticators are correct, itâs a matter of days before they invade this planet. I requested additional regiments from sector command, but they wonât get here in time.â
âThen what do you propose we do? Command thought they were headed for Varam. If they take this planet they can starve the system.â Teryan looked despondent.
âIf I may, General, I have drawn up some plans to give them one hell of a welcomeâŚ.â
Canoness Sila Aurelius raised her head from the dataslates she was pouring over when the knock came at her door. âEnter.â She called without rising from her seat at the large desk that was both hers and Malâs, his heavy reinforced chair was empty at the moment. A young woman dressed in neophyte robes with short cropped hair that marked her as a sororitas in training slipped over the threshold as the doors hissed open. âYour presence is required at the bridge ma'am, the fleets long range scouting cruisers have detected enemy entities within imperial territory, and the astropath has picked up on an imperial broadcast.â Sila raised an eyebrow and flicked the dataslates off, finally rising from her chair and pulling on the fur trimmed cloak that was hung from its back. âAlright, find Malleus and alert him of this news as well if it has not been done either.â âHeâs the one that sent for you ma'am, he seems rather eager about the whole thing.â The woman shifted uneasily at the memory of an astartes being excited. âHuh, thatâs not a common occurance. Go back to your duties now.â She dismissed the neophyte and rolled out the crink in her neck, and following her out.
The bridge was buzzing with activity, the captain as always on her control throne, a look of permanent concern and concentration etched onto her face, below her in the encloves that housed the crew runners were relaying reports and orders with an almost calm intensity that Sila had only seen before a fierce combat, she watched for a moment before seeking out the hulling form that was Malleus, spotting him almost instantly at the holotable that currently displayed a section of space that the fleet was presently travelling through.
Weaving through the decks to him she listened to the conversation that was going on around her, catching snippets here and there. ââŚ.tau fleet..â âXenos⌠this far into imperial..â âGuardsman..â âUnderstrength.â She reached Mal and noted the near permanent smirk on his lips, he really was eager for this engagement. âSo.. fill me in.â
Malleusâ smile rose to meet Sila. âTau incursion.â He gestured to the holographic form of one of the planets in the system. âConnat. Agri-world, not sure what kind of defensive presence they have, but we may as well have some input, being in the area.â He ran his knuckles down the right side of his jaw. âSecond Company are being sent in as a preliminary group. Could be a significant force to contend with, but we have some scouts who are probably ready to cut their teeth. If so, Third Company will replace them.â The Marine turned briefly to Lerrin. âMake sure the Thunderhawks are ready to go. If this planet has a bare Guardsman profile, weâll be needed down there quickly.â Lerrin slammed a fist against his chest and turned to make his way to the hangar.
Malleus tapped a button on the control panel of the holotable, causing the wireframe shape of Connat to increase in size as it continued to turn. âThe first Thunderhawk will carry the scouts to the Xenosâ projected landing point here.â Another button caused a red pulse to emit from an area of the planetâs surface. âSecond Company will touch down here to establish a forward base,â another pulse demonstrated. âA third Thunderhawk will be laid on for any of your Sisters that would like to join us, Sila. I would ask that they be quick to equip themselves, though. As I say, we will need to hit the planetâs surface with all due haste.â He cast his eyes around the table at the rest of the veterans gathered. âAny questions?â Heads shook in response as they departed to prepare, leaving Malâs eyes to rest on Silaâs.
Sila made mental notes as Mal explained the situations. âPerhaps the scouts could be better deployed here.â She gestured to a cluster of dense vegetation marked on the planet surface that was more than likely a forest and still close the the projected landing force without being left in the open. âI will have my sisters join with you, some of our armoured units will be well suited to the worlds terrain and we may as well use it to our advantage perhaps they can reinforce the guard unit should they have one.â She signalled over a runner and sent them to her sisters quarters with an arming alert. âCaptain whatâs your estimation of arrival to the system?â She called up to the stern woman in the control throne, who flicked her gaze down at Sila and then back up to a data screen to the left of her. âCalculations project less than 4 days, the Tau will make land fall before us but with us coming up behind them they will have no where to flee to, leave their ships to us.â âThank you. Please alert the guard forces on the planet of our intentions.â
(Opening the post a bit for a responce. Time to go to work.)
