#i saw that bleak americanata that was Nolans movie and the erasure of the bed-scene was enough for me to reread book 23 at midnight #and the idea that is penelope that in the simile holds the place for the shipwrecked sailor instead of odysseus and touches and kisses him #as a refugee would kiss the land that saved him. breaks me.#what I really most missed in this movie was not 'historical accuracy'. It was the humanity of the odyssey.#and you could say to me: but Nolan made Odysseus bitten by remorse and guilt and ptsd and ok but that's not it.#the odyssey isn't about the bleak remorse of an invader. that's not the point. and there's so much more to odysseus than just brooding #we never saw any of his tricks. he was stripped of all the cunning and lies and prudence. what we saw was an american veteran slammed in 'a #ALSO taking away the nobody trick in book 9 is not just 'taking away a pun' as Nolan thinks. is misunderstanding this epos #which is about A POLYTROPOS man. Instead no! Let's make him hit the cyclops with a spear. acting like whatever hero of thymos.#no metis detected #and don't make me start on penelope. tbh i think im gonna go to the cinema to watch nolan's odyssey. i kinda hated the trailer and marketing ideas, i don't really enjoy the blockbusterization and americanization of ancient texts, i am quite neutral about the cast (matt damon is too anglosaxon to be #myodysseus), and i despise the costumes, but i do miss homer quite much. i just did my last greek-lit exam in uni and i thought that i would have been fed up and worn out w homer and greek-lit, but turns out that i have severe homer-withdrawal after passing several weeks on it. so maybe this could be the cure.

@uglyadonis me when i forgor to add literally any context. forgive me!

it’s a funerary. thing. that says (roughly): to aulus sergius italicus. his freedmen and his son maximus set this up for their patron

it’s cringe because like. you can see from the spacing and relative letter sizes that it initially/was meant to just say the freedmen set it up on behalf of their patron. the line about the son is much smaller and has been squeezed in and they’ve had to add an et/and before liberti/freedmen. but this has made the line wonky!and also the name maximus has been spelt maxsimus.
