She thought the continues kissing the street would be weird and would make some people look a doubt take. But for thursday after noon it was very quite out, in Wendyâs mind it felt like they were the only two in storybook, like they were the only things that mattered. Everything that she felt since they day she met him made sense. It made sense that she knew she would fall in love. Fall in love with him. Her best friend. The one who always stood by her even threw some of her crazy teenage episodes. Would rant about what Star trek generation was better and cuddle on the forest floor. And now that she thought about itâ it was obvious.Â
Wendy laughed and kissed his lips once again. âAs much as I love that Idea-â She chuckled. â I say, let go tell your mom, you guyâs deserve to reunight.â She squeezed his hand. âDo you want me to come?Itâs fine you you want to see her on your own. I should go see my parents.. see if I can get her to set up a family dinner for my last night here-â Wendy started to feel her heart sink again⌠she was leaving tomorrow morning. âButâ Iâll meet you at Grannyâs forâ Milkshakes?â She smirked
Henry's stomach drops at the mention of her leaving, tomorrow. Right. He'd forgotten. It's different, now, surely, but he'd forgotten. Still, he smiles--he can't help but smile because he feels awake and alive again--nodding quietly. Of course she wants to see her family before he goes, and he knows he's part of it. Before she can pull too far away, he tugs her into a tight bear hug, arms wrapping around her shoulders, nose pressing into her neck, murmuring a sincere "Thank you." Into her temple, lips brushing against it, before he pulls away, squeezing her hand. "I'll, um...I won't be long. I'll bring mom with me, if that's cool." A coming home and going away party for both of them, maybe, wherever their lives go, though Henry's getting a better idea which way the wind is turning for his.Â
The wind dances through Wendy's hair like it knows which way it's going, too. He smiles.Â
"How about I just meet you at Gram's? We can sneak out later. Do me a favor and don't tell them? I mean, I wanna tell 'em together, but...." He trails off because he wants Wendy with him with his mother, too, but he knows this is the last thing the Mills family will do alone, because the Mills family, as the mayor had told him just yesterday, had more members of the family than his mom knew what to do with, he was pretty sure. "I want to tell my moms before anyone else, you know?" Another lingering moment before he lets Wendy go, smile spreading, hands stuffing into his pockets as he starts walking towards his childhood home. The walk turns into a stride and a stride into a trot, cheeks warm and red with life and purpose when he knocks on the door, swallowing back something strangled and happy when his mother opens the door with wet, guarded eyes.
"Hey, Mom." He murmurs, heart lurching double-time in his chest, "I came home."
