Back before the events of Steven universe, the diamonds were still trying to colonize the extreme planets they’ve come across but for the most part we’re unsuccessful. Some of that success was due to the hematite’s terraforming open spaces on the planets surface due to their numbers, resilience and superhuman strength for a gem that individually is cheaper then other gems at the time. Most of their weapons are more made for terraforming then for combat and that shows due to their poor reaction speed despite being extremely durable. All hematites have the ability in increase their own density, making them much heavier and harder to move while providing extra defense against Extreme Weather, Sharp objects and Heat. Emma in particular is one of these hematites that was dropped onto a desert planet know as BD-087; the surface baking up to 700 degrees Fahrenheit which is enough to cook a human alive if not in the shade. Her group was very efficient at turning the stony hills into dust and pebbles but the extreme sandstorms kept them from properly keeping their first base protected from the weather, inevitably wearing down despite their best efforts. The diamonds knowing very well this planet is too harsh for any attempt at settlement to succeed, they abandoned the planet along with the hematites as a punishment. One by one, Each hematite would succumb to the heat and weather over thousands of years; wearing down and eroding their gems till they poofed with Emma being the only one to survive for as long as she had by hiding in the ruins of the base. Eventually her curiosity would overcome her sorrow and fear for a brief moment, causing her to explore the ruins before inadvertently stepping on a damaged warp pad. On activation, the pad shatter and made her poof under the sheer stress of having her form molded during the process. Her gem would bounce land next to the kindergarten’s Warp pad, hopefully to be found by anyone going on their next visit there…

Hematite: the role of these gems would be the first ones that would be used as physical terraformers due to their incredible resilience, strength and Cheap cost to maintain and create. But their numbers have diminished over the years the gem technology continued to skyrocket, creating gems that were more effective at terraforming then the hematites before the gem war nailed the stake in the coffin for the last few hematites that remained on home world.

One individual was left on a planet that failed its colonization due to the planet’s harsh biosphere eroding the buildings they’ve made (most notably the scorching heat, atmospheric pressure and radiation which could cause a gem larger then then a ruby to swell up and poof if left exposed for long enough), and has been continuing her attempts to make at least one area open to colonize with the hope that homeworld would return… but the day never came…
