Discussions on Netflix's live action atla have made think about how much bite these characters have and I'm specifically thinking about Suki and Sokka
I feel like Suki is so often misrepresented and under appreciated as a character and a match for Sokka
Sokka and Suki are both warriors, both analytical, tactical, they are both leaders, and they've both been put into roles of huge responsibility at young ages
But while Suki has a whole village as back up, Sokka is basically "the man of the house" for a whole village. He's from a sexist culture that doesn't believe women can be warriors (unless they are water benders - making the southern water tribe less sexist than the northern) and he's been in charge of looking after the "women and children" even while he himself was a child
So when he meets Suki, a woman and a child, he immediately assumes the role he's always had, and has to learn when Suki shows him, no, I am just as much as a warrior and leader as you are, and you are just as much as a child as I am
And then her village burns down, and she experiences a trauma similar to what Sokka has, which brings them even closer as characters but, importantly, he had already learned to see her as an equal before then
Suki is definitely the most well-rounded of the characters- she doesn't have Sokka's arrogance, Aang's naivety, Katara's anger, Toph immaturity - she is what happens when a child is given consistent love and support (in no small part to luck since the earth Kingdom became a target later than the water tribes, and had better defenses)
But she's still her own person with her own opinions and it's because she is so sure of herself that she is so interesting with Sokka!
And their relationship is actually really awesome!
And I don't know why I'm feeling so passionate about a character who wasn't even my favourite growing up, or even rewatching, I like her, but she's always come after other characters but I dunno, she's important to me right now and I think she deserves better both from official sources and fandom ones
