Well Google recently released their authorship program which allows people to enhance their search engine results by using <strong>rel=author</strong>. Once implemented there will be five different things added to your search engine listing:</p> <ul> <li>Your posts will now include a picture of you in search results.</li> <li>Searchers can click your name next to your image and view your posts on Google+.</li> <li>Google may also display information like your circle count on Google+.</li> <li>People are more likely to click on results that have author images next to them.</li> <li>In some cases, searchers can add you to their Google+ circles and comment on your Google+ posts directly from the search results page.</li> </ul> <p>Sounds great right? Here’s how to implement it!</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>How to use Rel=Author</strong></p> <p><strong></strong>Implementing Rel=Author is simple. Follow the steps below and you’ll be sorted in no time!</p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Step 1</strong></p> <p>Create a link to your Google profile from your webpage, for example, if you take a look, mine is in the footer:</p> <p><em><a href=”https://plus.google.com/u/0/100618936019475861367″ rel=”author”>Oliver Ryman</a></em></p> <p> </p> <p><strong>Step 2</strong></p> <p>Create a link on your Google + Profile pointing back to your site.</p> <div>To add links to your Google profile:</p> <ol> <li><a href="http://profiles.google.com/me">Sign in to your Google profile</a>.</li> <li>Click <strong>Edit profile</strong>.</li> <li>Click the <strong>Contributor To</strong> section on the right (depending on how many photos you have, you may need to scroll to see this section), and then click <strong>Add custom link</strong>.</li> <li>If you want, change the visibility of your link, and then click <strong>Save</strong>.</li> </ol> </div> <div><strong>Step 3</strong></div> <div></div> <div>Check your markup and see what author data Google can extract from your page, use the <a href="http://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/richsnippets" target="new">structured data testing tool</a>. Optimizing Images for Better Search Engine Rankings

By now, hopefully you’re optimizing your website for search engines. However, i bet you didn’t know you could optimize your images too!

For example if you searched for the term “man laughing with a cup of tea” on Google Images you would expect to see images of just that! For this reason it is important to optimize your images for search engines.

Below are a few different ways you can do just that:

Alt Tags

Search engines cant read images, to them it is just a bunch of gobbledygook. This is why you need to include alt tags in order to describe your images to them.

Take this photo for example. A woman enjoying a cup of tea. Your alt tag should be something like this.

Alt=”woman enjoying a cup of tea in black and white”

This is how the full code should look.

The key to creating good alt tags is to:

Think like your audience. What would you search to find this image?

Keep it short and to the point.

Don’t stuff it full with keywords.

File Name

Using the same photo. We want our images file names to be descriptive of what the image is about. Make sure the file name isn’t just a generic name that will be extremely tough to compete with in the rankings like “woman.jpeg” . Instead use something like “womancupoftea.jpeg”.

Anchor Text

You can rank your images by building links to it, just like ranking a web page. So if i wanted that image of the woman drinking a cup of tea ranked for “Woman Drinking A Cup of Tea“, i would just build links with that as the anchor text. Just like ranking webpages you need to rotate the text about to prevent your anchor from being too rich.

Content

When you place an image on your website, make sure you wrap content around it. From the text underneath or above the image, the title tag of the page, and even headings, the more the text is related to the image the better off you are.
