ultimately the question is: does Riverdale's use of Italian-American film stereotypes effectively problematize the American Dream by planting them onto the Lodge's Mexican-American family, highlighting racialized and gendered tensions under the ideas of immigrant assimilation for the purposes of white cultural hegemony? Or is their approach just another in a long line of uncritical Latine demonizations and criminal affiliations among the likes of Scarface, where the lesson remains that white assimilation and a bootstrap mentality are the only ways to truly succeed?
