❝ honestly, why do i keep him around? you just keep losing him. ❞ zoe doesn't seem to care about that part. the less he was around, the better her life had been. easier, if anything. it was like wrestling a bull in a china shop, or however the phrase went. zoe plays with her star for a moment, before casually tossing it towards xayah in an effort to play some kind of game of catch. ❝ he's dead weight! ❞
xayah catches the star, because not catching it means facing zoe's wrath── or her amusement. ( which is worse? she can't tell. ) it's a blue star, from who knows what generation, cracked down the middle and chipped at the edges / BUT MOST OF ALL, A CRUEL LITTLE JOKE. she's careful to keep her face neutral, even if her fingers have the slightest tremble in them. rakan, rakan── stupid rakan!
❝ he's good to work with, ❞ she says, response on autopilot. how many times has zoe told her those exact words? rakan is neither as efficient as she is nor as obedient── not to zoe, at least. xayah's grip on the gem tightens, feeling the faint pulse of starlight and the sudden hunger to devour it whole. ❝ and more importantly, he'll be back. he always comes back. ❞ to me.

' it has been a while... ' ─── it's more a musing to himself than anything, whispered under his breath when his eyes follow the trail that ezreal marks. they're winding steps through an ornate entryway that he would have paid more attention to had he been in another's company but his focus is captivated elsewhere... and in all of their recklessness, it seems ezreal's lines are still carefully drawn, weighed in thought compared to the clumsy tact in aphelios' reaching for the strap of his bag. a way to keep him close, tether him within arm's distance and to supplement for a more tender entanglement as the crowd densens around them. it'll have to do for now.

' ─── careless, ever careless, anything to make ezreal sputter incredulously and laugh that way he does. a finger reaches to nudge right between ezreal's eyebrows, throw him off kilter. ' tsk, even here, all you can think about is work. let yourself enjoy the exhibit without being reminded of yone yelling at us, yeah? '
this, he hadn't expected── in fact, ezreal laughs just like the other wants, half in bewilderment ⅋ half in amusement. he scrunches up his eyebrows at the contact, eyes crossing in an attempt to follow aphelios' finger── before they fall right back to his companion. a heartbeat, ⅋ then ezreal breaks out into a crooked smile, batting his hand away.
❝ oh, c'mon! it's almost like you're jealous, ❞ ezreal says, trying not to think too hard about the implications. ( aphelios just says it so earnestly, so easily── does he say it to everyone? a small, selfish part of him hopes not. ) ❝ fine, fine, i won't bring up yone, or anyone else for that matter. you have my undivided attention. ❞ he turns away with a hum, trying to distract himself by pulling them through the crowd. ❝ but only in between exhibits. i have to give the art some love too, don't you think? ❞

' i think so. a few independent artists were given space for a gallery, so it'll be rather modern. ' ━━━ although the mask does little to skew the dazzling sun that he has come to associate ezreal with, aphelios finds himself far too comfortable in it. it's almost a second skin to him, donned as he does the rest of his accessories in succession with his rings, necklace, earrings. but ezreal's popularity far outweighs his, a perfect counter to the supposed mystery that he now tries to mimic. rolling thunder, laughter rumbles quietly in aphelios' chest when he nods, fingers fluid as he signs.
' no, i'm sure they won't. '
❝ great! we haven't been able to spend time together in a while, i don't want anything to cut this short. ❞ well── that's a sort of lie, if you include their group outings ⅋ work, but they both know that's not what ezreal is counting. he hums, beckoning aphelios to follow him as they start filtering in. ( a part of him calculates, then, the worth behind tugging his bandmate's sleeve instead, before quickly deciding the risks far outweighed the reward. the reward in question? that's his secret! ) ❝ if it's modern, then i wonder if we can take some as inspiration ... or would that put us in too much trouble? i can practically hear yone telling us no already, ❞ he jokes, head tilting back to stare up at the ornate glass ceiling with a smile. museums sure were built to wonder.

now that i've settled into this blog, here's a starter call!! 🤸
❝ they opened up a new exhibit, right? something about poster design? ❞ if he sounds excited, well── it's because he is! after their debut, it's gotten harder ⅋ harder to find time for these kinds of outings. ( ⅋ what a shame, too! he's sure they've missed a couple of fun exhibits. ) ezreal's eyes crinkle, the only evidence of his wide smile that remains hidden underneath his mask. ❝ do you think anyone will recognize us? ❞ in truth, he wouldn't really care if people did / ( isn't that such a heartwarming lie? ) / but he'd much prefer if they weren't disturbed at all. 𖤐 ˎˊ˗
i need to make a more formal post on this but considering i've been alluding to it a lot, i think about the line "now the lowlifes at the top floor" so much. everyone in heartsteel is dealing w their own issues, and they're going to prove to the music industry they're so much more than that.
especially in regards to ezreal; i'm still fiddling with how exactly i want his lore to go, but i've been talking it over with val, and generally:
his parents were big in the showbiz business, particularly overseas; i think he always wanted to follow in their footsteps, despite how little time they had for him he was still raised by his uncle, as they had little time for him
it was also very easy to call him a nepo baby because of this; he was a manufactured idol, after all! but it's not exactly the truth. if ez didn't have his own skill, his parents wouldn't have given him a second glance.
they are retired by the time ezreal debuts, though; which in a sense makes his "fall from grace" that much worse in his own eyes. they stepped out of the limelight only for their son, much awaited prodigy, to absolutely fail market-wise. he was so focused on actually making it that he rushed through agencies and didn't bother double checking, i think.
this absolutely destroyed him and he moved out for a while. probably crashed at some friends. got his own place, away from his parents, and was in true misery at that point.
i think he stlll kept up with a lot of the music industry, despite how unhealthy his obsession was at times. he also kept in shape, went through his vocal warmups/training, etc-- he never really gave up on his dream, but his self-esteem took a blow instead.
i think heartsteel genuinely saved him. not having to ride someone else's coattails, not having to stick to a sleek industry standard, being able to do it their way-- it's the most freedom he's ever gotten. and like what i said before, all of heartsteel have gone through their own trials and tribulations, so they'd know better than anyone else how the music industry burns you.
i think ezreal jokes about his past with the gang and will get flustered if they bring it up, but hasn't really told them how badly it affected him. he's committed to his dumb, shining persona, even if its detrimental to his relationships off stage. more than anything, he doesn't want heartsteel to get panned by the media. it's true most of them probably wouldn't care, but ezreal does, & has always cared very much what the fans think of and want from him.
( guy who LOVES the trope where someone uses nicknames as a form of distancing themselves from people, due to their issues ) so like do you see how i could apply this to ezreal
❝ ah, promoting heartsteel is so much work ... ❞ not that ezreal regrets it; he probably wouldn't trade it for the world, basking in his newfound fame with an iron grip. right now, though? his hands are lazily wrapped around runa's middle, chin resting on her shoulder as he makes a nuisance of himself on her couch. nothing like the perfect star plastered on the billboards, his cheeky smile replaced for a childish pout. ❝ 'lune's working us to the bone lately, i can hardly keep up ... wait── don't tell 'phel i said that, ok? ❞ not like ezreal means it, anyways! 𖤐 ˎˊ˗
