kentaro stumbled back a few steps, his combat boots scuffing the floor in a screech that felt like the perfect opening chord to a mid-90s grunge track. he blinked slowly, his expression frozen. "woah," he breathed, the word trailing off into a sigh. he look at the stranger, his head tilting slightly to the side, his dark hair obscuring half of his face like a protective shroud. he didn't interrupt; he just let the frantic energy of her words dissipate. "um, i'm fine, really," kentaro finally said, "the ice... it's all good, no worries."
he straightened his oversized shirt, "and honestly, the door hitting me was the most interesting thing that's happened in this building all day. it had substance." he didn't offer a name; names felt too permanent, too much like an anchor in a world he preferred to drift through. Instead, he just let the silence stretch out between them, heavy and expectant, like the pause between tracks on a vinyl record. "well..." he asked, a ghost of a smirk threatening to break through the gloom. "what's the next move?"
she's pretty sure that this is the most embarrassed she's ever been. she had hardly had the chance to meet anyone in the company at all. and one of the few times she does meet someone she's whacking them with a door! she feels like it's hours in between the time she finally stops talking and for the man to reply. and all she gets originally is a little 'woah' that slips from his mouth. oh no... now she had done it. she had already pissed someone off without even trying! she was just trying to enter the building and get to practice. and now someone hated her entire existence, she just knew it.
but then she hears his next statement and she starts to let out a hearty chuckle. it seems like he didn't hate astrid after all. which is a very relieving feeling. the last thing she wanted to do was to make a fellow trainee upset. especially one she had just met. but especially someone who is as handsome as this one is. "substance, huh? yeah. it probably did with me behind it kicking it in!" she answers quickly. then it seems to fall into silence. it seems comfortable at first. like they're two friends who don't need to say anything to get their point across. but soon the silence starts to get too overwhelming. like the man is purposely trying to drag it on as much as he could. this did seem like the perfect payback for what she had done to him. "next move..." she repeats just to make sure that there isn't any other silence to live in. "that depends... what do you have planned for the rest of the day?"

the atmosphere is super heavy at the photoshoot (mainly the stylists) and chaeyeon is sitting under the heat of the vanity lights, trying not to move a muscle. her spine is pressed so flat against this chair that she's basically become part of the furniture. she's been practicing her "smize" in the mirror for twenty minutes, trying to find that perfect line between supermodel and statue.
every time she catches her reflection, she doesn't even recognize herself. the makeup is so precise and doll-like it's like her face was truly painted on. she guesses she's going to stay in this exact position until they call "action." it's actually chilling how quiet the entire set is; everyone is just superfocused on how they look. astrid is next to her but chaeyeon being afraid to talk out loud, pulls out her phone and sends her a text message.
[ â âž ëšëě°Ą ] â unnie i am literally vibrating from all the espresso â the lighting on the monitor makes us look so expensive ă ă
so this is what idol life is like. getting up at the crack of dawn to get hair and makeup. spending your entire day at a photoshoot. legs wobbling because you've been standing for 6 hours straight. it's everything she had imagined. and she's loving every single moment of the experience. this is truly all she had ever wanted in her life. even if it meant she was standing over a chair in high heels. changing her position in the slightest way every couple of minutes so they could find the perfect angle of the two women for their profile picture. "astrid, can you actually stand to the right of chaeyeon? and maybe wrap an arm around her shoulders?" she hums out a small reply as she moves with the direction she'd been given. "like this?" she asks as she placed a hand on the other woman's opposite shoulder. she receives a nod and she puts on her best model face now.
"okay, we're gonna take a break!" the director says as he starts walking off. and it's now that she brings out her phone. she had felt it go off a little bit ago, luckily the vibration didn't alert anyone, but she had forgotten to actually check it. she chuckles softly when she sees that the messages are from the very woman sitting down in the chair next to her. she thinks for a moment of answering chaeyeon through text, but instead decides to just answer her instead. "I can feel you vibrating!" she says with a small chuckle slipping past her overly reddened lips. "but I'm in pretty much the same boat. I had an espresso and an energy drink before we got here. but we do look expensive don't we?!" her last statement comes out more excited than she had meant to be.
"do you wanna see some of the shots?" that makes astrid perk ho as she immediately moves to grab the other woman's and nearly drags her out of her chair. sbd should have been a little bit more careful because she knows it probably is dizzying to see the world spinning like that. "sorry! it's the espresso for sure now."
Lost and Insecure, I Found You:
written for @kenhd
it's always a strange time for astrid, whenever she's in korea for training. because it's a place she feels so connected to. but it's also the place that she feels so out of place. it's hard being the child of two different cultures that have blended together so well. because it seems that neither side fully accepts you. at least that has been astrid's experience thus far. she's heard all the ugly words whispered about her in korean. the equally rude words said by tourist in english. neither side realizing that she speaks both languages.
so by the time she actually gets to the hydra company building, she isn't paying attention. instead she's going through the latest insult in her head. what did they mean that korean's were supposed to be pretty and thin? and why does she care so much what two guys had to say about her? the laughter that came after was still ringing in her ears. she lets out a heavy sigh as she slams through the door that was in front of her
unfortunately for her, it seems that someone was directly on the other side of that door. at least, the amount of resistance on the door said that she had hit something. hard. "oh my god!" she exclaims in english before she quickly switches her language to korean. "I should have been paying attention. this is so my fault! are you okay? do you need anything? I can go get you some ice!" she rambles on for probably too long before she receives an answer.
he thought he was far more invested in this than he ought to be, however haru could not help himself from leaning forward and resting his elbows onto his knees.
it seemed like a reasonable enough suggestion from astrid: watch a classic american sitcom together so that haru could familiarise himself with casual english used in daily conversations over in the west. however, he supposed that there was only so much comedy alone could do to keep viewer's entertained, and it seemed that many loved a good sprinkling of drama every now and then. so here they both were, watching a fictional depiction of a situation far from fictional and far from being considered removed from reality.
haru could not say he had ever been in the male character's exact situation, but boy has he received similar levels of heat in past relationships. and so, fuelled by his own biased experiences, his lips pursed in budding annoyance briefly before he mumbled under his breath.
"...why is she so angry"
in the previous episode, the female character had asked if they could go on a break, and so any sane adult would therefore assume they were on a break thenceforth. she had explicitly said those exact words without any room for interpretation, and this was in no way as 'subjective'âalthough haru would still argue that it would barely hold any room in courtâas the time he merely mentioned that sometimes he thought it would have been better to remain as friends with one of his now exes.
it was an entirely different situation, one was clear as day and the other was milked for any and every loophole humanely thought possible. yet the writers aimed to depict this fictional scenario as though rachel's words were not definitive, while haru received a sharp slap to his cheek and was immediately dumped on the spot for the other party's subjective interpretation.
double standards, haru bitterly thought to himself but said nothing more.
â â â â â â â â Astrid was buzzing with excitement by the time it had finally reached the part. knowing haru as well as she does, she had a pretty good idea on what his reaction would be. but getting to discuss the intricacies of it all with him would be quite the treat honestly. and he reacts exactly how she thought he would. "why is she so angry?" and she's nearly jumping up from her spot on the couch.
â â â â â â â â because somehow, in the years since this particular episode has aired, she has been alone in her opinion. everyone that she had met had been on Rachel's side. had agreed that Ross was far too quick in sleeping with someone else. that of course Rachel didn't really mean it when she said she wanted a break from the relationship. but if she didn't mean it, why would she be the one to suggest it in the first place? something that Astrid has truly never understood.
â â â â â â â â "I know! I've never understood either!"
â â â â â â â â leave it to her brainy friend to be the first to see her side of things. especially since haru seems to see the world as one big scientific fact. what is said must be meant and then proven. "she said she wanted a break, and then when ross agrees and goes to see someone else? how is that possibly cheating? a break is another word for a breakup right?" she has grown up speaking 3 different languages fluently, one of which is English, so she's pretty sure that she's not missing any subtle variation of words in English. if anything, the male would have been the one to look for a slight nuance in the words.
â â â â â â â â she sits back down on the couch, a little bit calmer now. finally feeling vindicated in her stance that Rachel is the one who is in the wrong in this situation. "can you believe that roughly 80% of the population thinks we're wrong? that Ross was cheating when he did that?"

JUST ONE MORE DANCE (MOVE) | OPEN PARA
â â â â â â â â she lies on the tiles of the cold hard dance floor. and she's not crying yet. but she's about one more messup from doing so. how was she ever going to be able to pass her monthly examination? it was just one move that she couldn't get right. and there were likely people who were so much better than her. she *knew* that there were people far better than her. even the people who didn't have the expressions and the complete rhythm down at least could hit every single one of the dance moves. what was she going to do? she had already asked her roommate for help. and it's like she's stuck. not able to completely comprehend this dance to the fullest of her capability. she slams her fist down into the hardwood.
â â â â â â â â okay, it was time again. she rolls over onto her knees and quickly drags herself up from her spot on the ground. she stretches for a moment before she walks over to the radio and starts the song from the beginning. 'come on astrid, you have to do this...' she tries her best to hype herself up. going through the choreography is pretty routine. she hits every move. but it's getting closer to the bridge. the part that she struggled with every single time. she just had to get it once and she would be able to live off of that high for months. she locks in like she's never done before... and... "OH MY GOD. OH MY GOOOOD!" she immediately starts jumping around the practice room to celebrate her accomplishments. it wasn't perfect, of course. but she had finally done it!
â â â â â â â â now the only thing that she's locked in on is getting the move down. still jumping and squealing in excitement. it lasts for a couple of minutes longer before she's walking to the other side of the practice room to take a drink of her flavored water she had brought with her. she's pretty sure that nothing could ever ruin this day for her!
attention, hers especially, is currency. she lets astrid sit in that silence for a moment too long and it's really testing her patience, but she does want to make sure like astrid, and all other girls, really want this. so, she does turn after awhile, slow, eyes flicking over her roommate. astrid. her new accessory she's considering adding to her collection. and that's not rude, not dismissive, just calculated thoughts zoe has.
"cheering me on?" zoe's lips quirks, she drops her gaze back to the mirror, smoothing her hair like she's on camera. "sweet. but really unnecessary. i mean, i don't need fans." the way she says it, casual and matter-of-fact, makes it sound less like arrogance and more like reality. it's not bragging if it's true. still, she throws astrid a look through the glass, "but i'll allow it. ten out of ten for spirit?"
she steps back from her mark, tugging at her shirt like it's couture instead of sweat-damp cotton, the choreography still vibrating in her veins. it's obvious she loves the feeling of being watched, thrives on it, even. "don't think i didn't see you standing there, by the way. all starstruck." the tease is gentle enough to pass as playful, but sharp enough to remind astrid of the difference between her level and zoe's. and to walk accordingly
and then, magnanimous as a queen granting an audience, zoe softens. turns her full attention to astrid like sheâs just decided sheâs worthy. "but you are lucky i'm in a generous mood," she says, padding toward her, "show me the part you can't get. i'll fix it. and, like, don't stress. not everyone picks things up as fast. doesn't mean you won't catch up. eventually." her smile blooms like a cherub, so sweet to eat, "but just so you know," zoe adds, tilting her chin up, eyes glinting, "once i teach you, it's gonna look like my choreography on your body. which⌠you're welcome, by the way. that's an upgrade." she's offering because in zoe's mind, being taught by her is both a privilege and a promise.
â â â â â â â â she wonders if her and zoe will ever be able to be friends. they just seem so different. or at least very different in the way that they get where they want to be. the other always seems so cool, calculated, put together. everything for her adds up to being the best. and astrid is just there, it feels like. is she really even worthy of being in this company when this is what she has to compete about? when she doesn't have any formal singing and dancing experience? she feels so far below zoe.
â â â â â â â â "you don't?" its a statement that confuses astrid a bit. because why would you want to be an idol if not for being able to make a difference in people's lives as well? to get through to so many people and make them happier just by being your best. and the way she says it only adds another layer that makes it more complex and confusing all at the same time. but in all honesty she's too afraid to ask about it. fearing an eyeroll and a snippy reply. so she moves on from it just as quickly. "I'll take it! I've always been told my spirit is the best thing about me anyways."
â â â â â â â â she lets out a soft chuckle when zoe says she had seen her. she hopes that it comes off very cool, instead of telling on her. that she was in fact watching in awe and amazement. maybe even admiring the fact that the other was leagues ahead of her at a younger age. "listen, I was *not* starstruck. I was just spacing out." she knows that her tone will only giver her away, no matter how badly she wants to sounds cold and calculated too. luckily enough for astrid, she doesn't even pick up on the fact that the other is lowkey insulting her.
â â â â â â â â she bounces on her tiptoes, clapping her hands together, when the younger says that she'll actually help her. she knows exactly how much this means. how she *did* in fact get very lucky. and she's not going to take that for granted at all. "ahhh! thank you, thank you, thank you zoe!" she places her hands in front of her, bowing down like she's bowing to a queen rather than a fellow trainee. "I owe you my life." not that she'd want it.
â â â â â â â â she walks over to where zoe has her phone hooked up to the speakers and scrubs through the playback bar. she knows the exact second of the part she keeps messing up. after so many times of trying it on her own and having to scrub back to that exact timestamp will do that to you. "okay you know this part right here?" the bridge of the song starts to play, and she waits a few seconds before it gets to the correct part. "right here! where we have to move our feet like this and our arms like this..." and she's giving a little bit of a visual example, even though she knows that the other would know eactly how it goes. "I can't get my arms to cooperate in the slightest."
"We were on a break!" | with @hdharu
â â â â â â â â oh, this is so exciting. because astrid happens to know what's coming next. and she knows that since this is haru's first watch through of the american show, he doesn't have any clue. it's one of the most controversial subjects not only in the shows history but possibly in the history of television in general. it depends who you ask, who was in the right. media didn't have more people taking sides until 'twilight' became popular.
â â â â â â â â astrid and haru have been best friends basically since they met each other. it seems like he instantly clinged onto her because she was one of the english speakers who had come to korea with hydra america. and he was still learning korean. that was the only upside to being raised in a half korean household. she was fluent. she spoke many languages actually. and while haru was pretty proficient in speaking english, he also had a really bad habit of overcomplicating conversation with long and scientific words. thus the idea was born! astrid had suggested that they watch some american tv shows so that he could pick up on more conversational and plain english.
â â â â â â â â what better show to start with than 'friends'? when she thinks about quintessential american sitcom, that's the show that comes to mind! and she can't believe that they're this far in already. if she had to guess, she would have said that this moment happened in like season 6 at the very least. but it happens so early on in the series! she turns to watch haru's reaction the moment that the scene starts to take place. and it's that scene. when ross sleeps with someone when they're on a break and rachel considers it cheating. she has her own opinions about it obviously, but it's always so fascinating to see how people react to it. if she stares any harder at the male, she's pretty sure she'll burn a whole into him at this point.

FT. @hd-astrid âĽď¸
the bass line cuts zoe deep. her body's still humming when she snaps out of the last eight-count, momentum carrying her half a step before she steadies, checking the mirror like it owes her confirmation. clean. sharp. of course it is. she rakes her fingers through damp hair, tugging her tee back into place, already picturing what the cameras will catch once s real stage comes into play. nothing is confirmed but in her head, the angles are framed, the lights are blinding, and the charts are hers. sweat beads at her temples, pulse synced to the echo of the beat still buzzing in her chest, daring her to run it back.
zoe drifts toward the speaker dock, thumb grazing her phone, when her roommate shifts in the reflection. not the lights overhead or her own silhouette, but movement at the doorway. she doesn't speak right away (silence is leverage, and she likes to make people earn her attention) but her gaze sways toward the door, curiosity softening her pretty features.
"...you coming in, or just standing there like a fan?" she drawls, light, teasing with enough pull to make it sound like both a provocation and an invitation. the smirk that curls after is the zoe trademark, like she already knows what answer she prefers and astrid better guess right.
â â â â â â â â she's surprised that she hadn't even heard hed roommate leave the dorm this morning. she's such a light sleeper. or at least she used to be. it seems that in the last couple of weeks, right around the time she's started training, she sleeps like the dead. it's something that she very much has to get used to, still. because when she had woken up to an empty room, no sign of the other woman, she was a little freaked out. what if someone broke in? would she be able to sleep through that? it's the kinds of thoughts that travel through her head. until she realizes that there are more important things to be worried about right now. like the fact that she is most likely late to practice. she gasps out loud as she looks at the clock hanging up in the shared living space. and thankfully, it says she still has another 30 minutes before she had to be there. it seems that zoe was just an overachiever. sigh. how is astrid supposed to compete?
â â â â â â â â she arrives at the massive company building just in time. she's has to get better at being on time. because she's pretty sure that one of the teachers told her"you're on time only if you're early." it's not that she doesn't care, this is just a huge adjustment for her. a lot of the people she was training with had wanted to do this their whole lives. everything they'd done had led to this very moment. and astrid? well she had done this on a whim. and it actually felt right. like this was what she was supposed to do this whole time. so she knows that she needs to kick it in to gear and get even more serious.
â â â â â â â â somehow she manages to find zoe in the first practice room that she checks. she thinks about just bursting in. but something inside of her stops her. she stops to admire every move that the other woman makes. she seems so in to it. seems to have rhythm and musical knowhow and everything. she crosses her arms as she stands there with her mouth hanging open. is she ever going to be at that level? they had started at the same time but the other trainee seemed leagues ahead of her. but she knows who she is. she can do this. she just has to give it her all.
â â â â â â â â she catches the glance from across the room. and she doesn't know if she should say something now. because zoe still seems rather focused on what she's doing. so astrid begins to space off herself. and when the other speaks to her directly, it makes her jump. "zoe fighting!" she does a little cheerleader motion with her hands, insinuating that she's gonna stand there like a fan. but then she takes a few steps into the room as well, to show she was actually coming in to practice as well. "I didn't want to interrupt! you were so into your routine!" she moves to lean against the wall, letting her arms lay down freely now. "are you going over the trainee routine? for our evaluations? because there's one part I'm stuck on and I could use some help."
