phm movie #thoughts from someone who shotgunned the book last week, full spoilers ahead for both:
lotta stuff I really liked from the book hit the cutting room floor, and I don't begrudge it that, the movie's two and a half hours as is, but rip to the copyright infringement lawsuit and paving the sahara and nuking antarctica and dubois and shapiro's insane personalities and the "history used to be all about food" scene and rocky being a #proud scary space spider and the autocannibalism. generally the correct cuts to make in order to have a film people will actually Watch, but if they ever release that ninety minutes cut from the first test screening that would be really good for Me Specifically.
really visually nice overall, looked more like 60s-70s sublime scifi than 2010s maximalist scifi. which are genre terms I just made up but I think they convey the vibe, it was giving more 2001 than interstellar, the visual canvas had a lot of room to breathe.
stratt was quite different than the book, more emotional and less cutthroat, which I think objectively isn't Worse or anything I just personally have a real love for ruthless women so that was a loss for the Me Specifically community. I think my ideal unified stratt vision would have her doing some of her book atrocities without breaking a sweat And the karaoke scene And almost breaking down when she has to sic the guards on grace, the best of both worlds.
both grace and rocky got sillied up, and you win some and lose some with that so imo it's a net neutral, but for rocky this gave the added bonus of really making it clear that This Individual Is Not Well. this is someone who watched two dozen friends die and was completely alone for far too long afterwards, he's got not sense of boundaries and has recently acquired high level control freakism as a response to finally having another living being around and being completely unwilling to lose or be apart from him. but why grace and rocky have to be separate people question?
a few plot things got cut that I do think it makes less sense without, mainly a) that the amnesia was deliberately induced and b) that grace with choosing rocky and the rest of the eridians' lives over his own at the end. the movie conveyed that grace's decision to double back around was a choice to do something scary and embrace helping someone else at personal cost, but that cost was presented as not being able to go home, not that it was finally his real volitional sacrifice. which is a bit of a shame, movie rocky being so visibly An Individual Who Is Not Well would have reacted so beautifully to realizing grace had intended this rescue to be a suicide mission.
for a fun book-to-screen translation thing, we lost the little internal monologue bit about the ship making grace's coffee exactly how he likes it, but we see the same thing conveyed through all his clothing. the movie brings the fatal explosion down from nine days before launch to three, and stratt still packed all his stupid fucking science pun shirts to give him something he liked.
I'm finding it hard to put this one into words, but the movie gave me a much clearer sense of, like, embodiment and intimacy as the trade off for the book's internality, and I think the clearest example is the two versions of the scene where grace gets taken in against his will. I found the text version really affecting because it really conveyed that sudden feeling of fight-or-flight panic when you find yourself helpless and start reaching for any means of escape and already almost feel the pre-shame for what you're doing but not quite enough to stop you, and the film traded that for an attempt at physical flight that ends with grace getting pinned to the ground and forcibly drugged at his friends' behest. different but also very affecting flavor of panic and helplessness, and it really complemented the volitional intimacy with rocky.
vox canonically does not hold typical toxic fifties social values: a masterpost
this is a collection of meta posts I've collected for my own amusement and want for a comprehensive vox social values analysis masterpost. im also going to include posts about alastor, his masculinity and gender expression. youll find out why
this is purely about what is canon. people can and should do whatever they like with fictional characters
MASSIVE shoutout to @darkermoonnow for being 90% of the posts here. i genuinely thought there would be more from different users but seems i was wrong (pls prove me wrong) i will edit this as i find new posts to include, so please do give me your suggestions!
fifties social sensibilities vs vox by @darkermoonnow:
this is the one that started this all. "If you compare Vox's behavior in modern-day canon with actual 50s-level bigotry. And you assume he held opinions typical of his era while he was alive. He's um. He's pretty progressive." i cant put this better than op did
comparing what was normal in the fifties usa when it comes to racism, misogyny and the ideal of masculinity. the race of vox's partners straight up isnt important to him (vs fifties man would think it is beneath him to work with anyone not-white), he doesnt expect women to be subservient to him, and he does not live up to fifties ideals of masculinity
how vox's social values might have been when he appeared in hell vs. how they might have changed since by @darkstarofchaos:
"Considering he can't have been in Hell for long before meeting Alastor, and he made his offer a few years into their friendship, I'd say he either changed his mind about a lot of things very quickly, or he was already on the progressive side of the political spectrum while alive. Or both." once again, another banger from op
post goes over some historical facts abt the usa in the 50s, how vox had Plenty of things to have a breakdown over (he became dark-skinned in hell. his bestie was black), and then an outline of how if he Did have issues with racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. (which he Did, realistically. but not as majorly as many of this contemporaries) how his relationships with the vees will have had him put in situations where he has had to work through them
vox and his (lack of) misogyny by @darkstarofchaos:
lists common misogynistic behaviours that vox p much never does, even when he easily could. most notable is that he spent all of season two slandering charlie, and he didnt use the fact that she is a queer woman against her once, but instead only focused on fair criticism. that if something is a prime spot for misogyny, which he doesnt display
vox and his relationship with sexual dynamics by @darkstarofchaos:
this may be my favourite analysis linked here. ill try to not get carried away summarising
the post is about how the crowd who argues that vox Canonically Only tops dont really have a leg to stand on, if their arguments are based on vox being insecure in his gender presentation or of not being (or appearing to be) in control
vox's gender presentation can with good conscience be called genderqueer, and he is very secure in it. this is explored in depth in many other analysis posts (linked below). he also does not mind taking the more feminine role at times: he lets val lead when theyre dancing. he also doesnt have Any reaction to val having drawn him tied up, when he could have been flustered or angry if this had been val trying to get on his nerves. so theres no reason to believe he would canonically be vehemently against the idea, or that he would Only dom and top
theres So Much More here that i dont mention, please go read it!!
analysing alastor and vox's gender presentation by @darkstarofchaos:
vox: vox has both very masculine and feminine mannerisms he openly and comfortably displays no matter who is watching.
alastor: alastor has feminine mannerisms in the way he uses his hands, how he sits "primly" at times. he also does slouch and manspread. he is very emotionally restrained and believes he has to always survive entirely on his own (compare vox whos much more emotionally expressive and believes in cooperation)
alastor and vox's toxic masculinity by @r3tr0b3tty0:
part 1: just alastor: alastor and his relatonships with men are often based on power and dominance, alastor suppresses his emotions
part 2: al and vox: vox idolises alastor and thinks al is "peak masculinity", emulates him, seeks his approval. vox's toxic traits are triggered by alastor's proximity
alastor's relationships with women vs vox's with velvette + al's toxic masculinity by @g00dberry and @darkstarofchaos:
lists alastor's relationships with women: rosie, niffty, charlie and velvette, none of being really "friendly" or "close". granted, al doesnt really Do friendship, but still. also includes a tldr of alastor's main toxic masculinity traits that have been explored more in-depth in the posts linked above
this is compared to vox's relationship with velvette: "comfortable with a degree of closeness society normally reserved for same-gender friendships", as the post states. theres also a separate post entirely focusing on this, also by darkstarofchaos
the point is that reading al as a feminist girls' girl and vox as a sexist creep is not backed up by canon
this list is incomplete, and i will add more to it as i find more meta. last updated on july 16th 2026

The absolute funniest thing to me about autistic!Vox headcanons is that when I first saw them, I thought people were focusing too much on the sharks. Like, okay, he likes sharks. But if youād asked me then, Iād have said he was one of the most obviously neurotypical characters in the show.
Then it occurred to me that standing on furniture is. Not really neurotypical behavior. So I went back with a fresh perspective and you know what, he definitely has a few quirks that stood out from the rest of the cast. Time to start looking for patterns.
Yeah, so turns out, heās one of the most obviously neurodivergent characters in the show. And I have no explanation for how I drew exactly the opposite conclusion beyond my brain going, āthis is all perfectly normal behavior and requires no further thoughtā. Except I myself am AuDHD, so if my brain is glossing over a character as ānormalā, thatās. Probably an indicator that theyāre not neurotypical. So.
Anyway, I have never seen a single post where anyone goes into any detail about his autistic traits, so Iām going to do that now! Youāre welcome.
Letās start with the sensory processing differences, because Iāve already waxed poetic about Vox being a tactile seeker. The really short version is that he touches everything he can get his hands on, up to and including people, because his nervous system needs more tactile input to be satisfied.
Heās also a vestibular seeker, which refers to movement that engages his sense of balance and spacial awareness. He spins, he jumps, he climbs (or jumps) onto furniture, and sometimes he does things like walk sideways and hop backwards - up stairs. āStandingā with his wires also counts, since the addition of vertical movement gives the vestibular system more to process. Regardless of what heās doing, he never seems to get dizzy, which is typical of vestibular seekers.
On the other side of the coin we have sensory aversions, which Vox doesnāt explicitly demonstrate. But the rooms where he spends most of his time are markedly different from the rest of Vee Tower: big open spaces with low lighting and cool colors, or else random grids of solid red or blue-white panels. Thereās no clutter, minimal decoration, and most of the rooms have aquarium glass instead of windows.
Heās not avoiding visual stimuli, by any means, but he does seem to prefer visually quiet environments; not necessarily dark, but with few patterns and little movement apart from whatever heās focused on. There could be a few reasons for this, but since he doesnāt seem to have a problem with any specific form of visual stimulus, itās probably more an issue of how much information he can process at one time.
Vox also limits how much visual input he receives during conversations. He's continually turning his back on and moving behind people while he's talking, and when he does face them, his eye contact is sporadic; sometimes it's unrelenting, other times he's glancing away every few words. Conversely, when someone else is speaking, he generally (though not always) turns towards them and makes fairly steady eye contact.
Again, there are a few possible explanations for this. But given that Vox is also someone who talks with his hands (which can help to organize thoughts and maintain fluent speech), and he can make eye contact just fine when heās not the one speaking, we can actually narrow it down to a likely answer: neurotypical speech simply takes more cognitive resources than he has available.
Talking to people takes a lot of mental coordination. Youāre organizing your thoughts, forming them into words, paying attention to the other person's nonverbal language, processing the sensory input from said language, converting that input into meaning, and monitoring your own behavior, and youāre doing it all in real time. And thatās just the act of talking. If you canāt do all of it at once, something has to give, and the only non-essential part of the process is looking at people.
Understanding other peoplesā speech takes a lot of cognitive work too, but it also uses different parts of the brain. So while some autistic people struggle to make eye contact at any point during a conversation, others can do so if they find one skill or the other easier. Rather ironically, Vox appears to have a harder time speaking than listening.
On the topic of nonverbal language, autistic people tend not to use gestures the same way as allistics. Some use fewer, some use more, and they don't always serve a communicative purpose (that is, they arenāt meant to convey information). Vox very much uses more, and while some of them mimic allistic communication, many don't. They might help him communicate (again, talking with his hands), but theyāre often meaningless when matched with what heās actually saying.
Additionally, some autistic gestures are actually stims (aka self-stimulatory behaviors), and Vox seems to have at least a few of those. The most common is pressing his palms together and/or interlacing his fingers, but other repeated movements include waving his hands, moving them in circles, and tapping his fingers. All of these are general-purpose and can occur at any time, though he tends not to use them in front of a crowd.
He also has what appear to be primarily self-soothing behaviors: he spends a lot of time adjusting his lapels or bowtie when he's trying to compose himself, whether because heās irritated, flustered, or just in an especially good mood. If he's more on edge he might cross his arms instead, or outright hug himself if he's excited, and he does something similar by dejectedly holding one arm when Alastor rejects his offer (crossing one's arms is a common action, but that doesnāt make it any less of a pattern. Especially given how Vox is with touch in general).
When it comes to other people, Vox obviously has issues with appropriate social touch and respecting personal space, which could be attributed to his tactile seeking behaviors. It could also be a sign of low empathy; he likes touch and physical closeness, and either doesnāt realize or doesnāt care that others might not share in that enjoyment (considering his reaction to Alastor calling him out on it, my money is on him not realizing). Either way, he definitely missed the signs that Alastor was merely tolerating it, and he never seems to notice other people reacting when he touches them (though Alastor, specifically, is so theatrical about disliking touch that if Vox had ever seen him physically interact with anyone, it wouldnāt have been unreasonable to assume that a lack of such a reaction meant it was fine when he did it).
His attitude towards touch aside, Vox does generally appear to have relatively low emotional empathy. Beyond irritation, he isn't emotionally affected by Velvette's studio being wrecked or Valentino's upset over Angel leaving, and even before Alastor gets into his head, itās implied that he regularly acts without consideration for either of them (such as leaving Velvette behind when he electroports, which seems to be a common occurrence). And thatās his behavior towards people he likes.
On the other hand, he can understand other peopleās thoughts and feelings to some extent, even if he mostly uses that knowledge to hurt and manipulate them. So he is capable of cognitive empathy, and probably pretty good at it; heās not infallible, especially if heās not given anything to work with, but he can figure people out.
He also demonstrates compassionate empathy (taking action to help others) on multiple occasions: he answers Velvette's summons despite not wanting to deal with Valentino, pays attention to what Val is saying, and offers him something to make him feel better. He leaves out a pen and paper so Val can draw during the Take Over Heaven presentation and gets all of his requested foods "just in case". He's willing to put himself in harm's way to protect the other two. Even if itās a matter of practicality from his perspective, itās still a form of caring, and comes from a place of genuine affection.
That being said, Vox has a friend circle of two. He has gotten close to three people in seventy years (and he's known Valentino for around fifty of those years, so it's not just because Alastor traumatized him). He also has a room dedicated entirely to hiding away from the world with his sharks and watching spying on people through screens instead of talking to anyone.
For all that he loves performing and being the center of attention, he doesn't show much desire for one-on-one social interaction. He certainly wants the option, and does enjoy the company of those he's close to, but he also wants to be left alone. And even when he doesn't want to be alone, spending time with someone doesn't mean interacting with them directly. Sometimes it looks like having tea together while they work on separate tasks.
When he does interact directly with people, whether through desire or necessity, Vox is a "take the topic and run with it at full speed until forced to stop" type of guy. He can literally have entire conversations all by himself: when he calls Charlie to "invite" her to his party, she only speaks when she realizes who's calling and right before he hangs up. In the flashback, Vox does all of the talking for nearly a full minute while Alastor makes two remarks (one of which is permission for Vox to keep going). He can have a proper back and forth exchange, and sometimes even wants to (he's disappointed when Alastor refuses to engage with him after surrendering), but his conversations do tend to be one-sided.
I could keep going (full disclosure: I consider everything Iāve said so far to be a general overview). But this is getting long, so I want to wrap up by saying that fictional characters are not diagnosable. Buuut Vox does legitimately meet the behavioral criteria.
He has difficulties with social-emotional reciprocity (the āback and forthā of social interactions, empathy and emotional responsiveness, approach to communication, etc).
He has differences in nonverbal communication.
He has difficulties with developing, maintaining, and understanding relationships (which includes a lack of interest in doing so).
He has ārepetitive or stereotyped movements, use of objects, or speechā, aka stimming.
He has sensory processing differences.
He has āhighly restricted, fixated interests that are abnormal in intensity or focusā (I donāt need to get into the sharks. Everybody knows about the sharks).
The first three are all required. The latter three come from a cluster of four traits where only two are required. The only trait out of the seven he hasnāt definitively demonstrated is āinsistence on sameness, inflexible adherence to routines, or ritualized patternsā. So like.
As headcanons go, you donāt get much closer to canon. He could literally be diagnosable in-universe.
