The Two Escobars Jeff Zimbalist, Michael Zimbalist USA, 2010 ★ so I watched this because of all the hype online and.. it's kinda terrible?
it fails from the very beginning, focusing (and even lying) on key aspects. let's check the plot synopsis: "andrés escobar was the biggest soccer star in colombia"
what? hell no. in a team with freddy rincón, valderrama, tino asprilla, el tren valencia, rené higuita, óscar córdoba, and other BIG names, andrés escobar was a mere supporting player, a name to fill the squad. you know what was HIS thing? his last name was "escobar". so let's focus on that, the filmmakers thought, and use the title "the two escobars". "you know, because of pablo escobar?" - "genius!" was the reply, followed by a high-five. lame.
it's an oversimplified point of view. I was reminded of chuck norris vs communism, a great documentary on the bootlegging of movies in romania in the 80s. that was a very real thing, but the documentary sillily focused on the bootlegging as the sole reason the dictatorship ended. which, really, it's a very stupid point to make. here, the connection is almost as silly, while basically non-existent. "yeah, let's base our whole documentary on people sharing the last name" - mind-boggling.
and don't get me started on some of the editing choices here. they really approached this as "entertainment for stupid people". it's almost infuriating.
the documentary also features big fat american gummint guys shit-talking everyone else for those bad, bad drugs, while failing to mention the US was (and still is) the #1 costumer.
The Queen Frank Simon USA, 1968 ★★★ dancing! singing! laughs! tears! it's got it all!
The Swimmer Frank Perry USA, 1968 ★★★★ best part of the movie was when it went to places all different from what I was expecting or anticipating and that's why filmmakers make movies and I just sit around here moping
Eno Gary Hustwit UK/USA, 2024 ★★★★ eno masterclass
The Welcome Table Josh Fox USA, 2026 ★★ oof, that was bad.
look, when it's about real people of the world and how their lives are affected and they get tell their stories and even sing and dance a little? that's when the doc works.
the rest of the time, with the surface-level ruminations from the director (which, of course, delivers all his drowsy lines with an over-abundance of vocal fry) and some rather clumsy connections of topics, it's just plain bad. loose change-levels of bad.
migration is a real problem, so is climate change. no need to make up bullshit to adjust to your narrative (climate change is to blame for gang violence in colombia? really?). imagine just letting your subjects speak their truth - it would've been more than enough. but no, mr director needs to insert himself here and there, lest we forget he's shooting, writing, editing and directing.
I was done with it 40 minutes in, but I never stop watching anything, no matter how bad. perhaps it's time to change that rule..

Is God Is Aleshea Harris USA, 2026 ★★★ big jaw drop when Vivica Fox showed up
Blue Heron Sophy Romvari Canada/Hungary, 2025 ★★★★★ kept reading about this movie for so long, months and months - at some point, a movie just cannot live up to the expectations. but it did.
for the record, I'm only child, so the story's specifics are nowhere near my own experiences - but I guess fighting with memories and what if scenarios (and even guilt) is a thing for everybody. we would do everything so differently, if we could.
one extra star for playing a Daniel Johnston song at the end. like, Sophy, please, I'm already on the ground.
Lakposhtha parvaz mikonand Bahman Ghobadi Iran/France/Iraq, 2004 ★★★★ my goodness, what a story. what a movie.
so many beautiful images. haunting, too. and the light moments, dancing around the darkness. and you know the dark is coming, ready to engulf everything.
and the kid actors, they're all good! how rare is that? so visceral, so real. and I just know that the filmmakers felt blessed when they found Avaz Latif, a face that speak a hundred words without saying anything out loud. amazing eyes, too.
at some point I was worried about the uh, logistics of getting these kids to act so well, to cry so copiously. they were surrounded by war and death and fear so I'm sure it wasn't that hard to elicit some vivid emotions - but still.
