"No, I didn’t. If that was my intention, you’d be grasping for air right about now."
Rollo gave Hel a wry smile. He guessed that she was right about the heat attack part of things. However she did seem to make him jump more often than he would like to admit. He let his heart rate settle and his breathing was even. “How can I can help you Princess Hel?” He asked her. He looked carefully at her. She didn’t look injured at the moment. He just wanted to see what she wanted and how she was at the moment. “I hope no one has beaten you like before” Rollo said darkly recalling the black eye Hel had gotten.
The deadling sat cautiously on one of the chairs scattered about the room, probably moved for ease of access at some time since last she had visited. Her hair was more wild than when he had seen her — when he had seen her hurt, curls and ringlets forming tendrils of all thicknesses and directions. But the ambiance that resonated from her smile was genuine, bright and calm as death would never be assumed, “Not since then, no.”
Rollo gave a nod of his head when he heard she was okay. His eyes scanned her up and down. She seemed well enough. He could never tell with Hel though. She was different and he could never read he every well. He took a deep breath and then made himself comfortable near her. His hand gave her shoulder a soft squeeze. "I'm glad. So long as no one tries to hurt you." He said with a soft smile. He poured our two cups of ale and then passed one of them over to Hel. "It's fortunate that you are here. My brother is now king. I am glad for him. I worry that the English king will kill him" Rollo admitted. He wanted Ragnar protected. He didn't care much about himself. He had been told he would sire a great line of kings and queens that would sit on the English throne.

The Winter Sun | Poppa and Rollo
Rollo smile at Poppa and William. He was happy to see that they were all okay. He was nervous about being here again. Rollo hadn’t been back here in years. However his fears melted as William toddled over. The small boy latched onto his fathers legs and gave a happy giggle. “Papa!.” He said happily. Rollo picked him up and hugged him close. He then looked at Poppa and offered her a small smile. He pressed a kiss to her lips. Rollo felt more relaxed and happy. “We better get moving. Ragnar is expecting us.” Rollo told his wife. He held William and made sure to stay close to Poppa. The villages stared openly at the three. William began to grow a little sullen under the gazes of many. Rollo just ignored them. “I wouldn’t worry too much.” He whispered to Poppa and kissed her cheek. They soon came to the Jarl’s house. Where Ragnar was with his boys and wife. He hoped this would go well.
He set William down who latched onto his mother. His little face scrunched. Rollo opened the door and ushered his family in. “Brother!” Ragnar cried cheerfully. The two men embraced warmly enough. “Poppa, you look lovely” Ragnar complimented. He gave her free hand a kiss and then noticed the small boy. He was hiding in his face in his mothers skirts. “Who’s this little one?” Ragnar asked. “My son, William. William, say hello to your uncle Ragnar” Rollo prompted. The boy moved and then looked at Ragnar. The man was smiling and looking happy. “Hello” the boy said. He promptly hid again. “Please sit, I shall introduce Poppa to my family” Ragnar said with a grin. Rollo sat down and William sat next to him with a seat left for Poppa.
Cups of ale were passed round and goats milk was given to the children. Ragnar’s boys were watching William who was watching them right back. Rollo held his breath for a moment before the boys began to play nicely together. Relief flooded him as they got on. “Poppa, this is my wife Aslaug, my boys Ubbe, Hvitserk, Sigurd and Ivar” Ragnar said pointing at each person. “I’m delighted to meet you” Aslaug told Poppa with a smile. Her eyes scanned Poppa up and down. “I hope the journey wasn’t too trying for you.” She said kindly. The peace was broke when William and Ubbe began to wrestle on the floor. “It’s mine!” William shouted. “No!” Ubbe yelled right back.
The two soon fell about laughing as the cross was given back to William. He wasn’t raised Christian but as it had belonged to his mother’s uncle he kept it close. “Boys, what can you do? When they’re not fighting they’re are making a mess” Aslaug said cheerfully. William was soon sat closer to his mother and was a little scared as Floki came into the room. He eyed Rollo and Poppa and greeted them well with Helga and their baby close by. “We’ve laid a feast in your honour.” Ragnar told Poppa and Rollo. William climbed onto his mothers lap and yawned. His hand was clutching at Rollo too clearly frightened they would go.
With a strange sort of wonder, and a healthy dose of worry, Poppa followed her husband and her son. It was not that different from Bayeux. Smaller, perhaps, and colder. What she had sure is that they probably were more of an attraction than what she imagined. Still, she knew how to act in situations like this, she had not forgotten her time as the Lady of Bayeux.
Praying that everything would go well, Poppa waited as the door opened and Ragnar greeted them. Smiling kindly at Ragnar, she replied. “Thank you, it’s been a long while, Ragnar.” Still, she had to admit that she did not move at ease among the Viking warriors (One thing was Bayeux. Bayeux was her home, her territory and a place she knew way better than Kattegat. Here, she was the foreigner among those who Rollo called family)
So the presence of another woman managed to ease things, and Poppa found herself smiling warmly at Aslaug. “And I am honoured, Lady Aslaug.” She curtsied politely, unable to help old customs “It was… interesting. I must admit that both my curiosity and taking care of my son overcame any other possible problems, as it was my first time at the sea.”
The instinct of a worried mother came back when she heard her son shouting and fighting against one of Ragnar and Aslaug’s children.
No, not now.
But things changed when they fell laughing and she breathed a sigh of relief. Turning towards Aslaug, she even managed a smile. “It’s all playing, after all.”
As Floki entered in the room, Poppa couldn’t help an amused smile. Not because of Floki himself, but because of the words Frédégonde spoke to her before the depart.
And if you cross paths with that madman, remind him that Frédégonde does not forget she owes him a good slap!
Nodding graciously instead at him and at his wife, while she stroked her son’s hair, Poppa spoke warmly. “And we thank you for that, Floki”
Floki looked at the little boy who was hugged close to Poppa's body. His eyes were focused on the young lad who was playing with the cross. His eyes narrowed and he reached out to grab it from him. William stopped him and stuck out his tongue. Rollo let out a short laugh and glanced at Floki with narrowed eyes. "He doesn't let anyone but his mother take that from him so I'd leave him alone" Rollo warned Floki. The man shrugged but did glare at Rollo. Rollo looked at Ragnar who was throwing bits of food at Athelstan. Aslaug was making sure her boys behaved. "Don't worry love. You're safe and so is our son" Rollo whispered into Poppa's ear. He wanted her to feel safe here. William made sure he was far away from Floki. His eyes wide with worry and fear. He didn't like Floki. He also didn't like Ragnar much. He seemed to be an angry sort indeed.
William looked at his mother. He gave her an uncertain smile as he began to eat the food. Floki watched with narrowed eyes. He didn't much like the fact the little boy had a cross. "So William. Do you know how to use a shield?" Ragnar asked. The boy nodded proudly. Rollo was teaching him to be a good warrior on the battlefield. "He knows how to fish, fight and use a shield" Rollo said with a slight air of amusement in his voice. He didn't know what Ragnar would think of that. He also had a lot of pride over his son. He could not be happier with the little boy. He was his life along with Poppa and his home in Bayeux. "Good you'll need your strength boy" Ragnar told William.
The boy blushed and his his face. Rollo chuckled lightly. Aslaug looked at Poppa as Rollo was drawn into conversation with Athelstan and Ragnar for the moment. "Is Rollo treating you well. I understand he wasn't always pleasant to women. Did he tell you that?" Aslaug asked. She didn't want to rip them apart at all but she was curious to know how much she knew about Rollo. She noticed Siggy a little way down. She came over all smiles. "So you're the wife of Rollo Lothbrok?" She asked her eyes flashing. She was very much jealous of the woman.

I mentioned Clive Standen the other day and ohcaptainmycaptain1918 hadn’t heard of him, so I felt a Clive appreciation post was in order.
"Did you really have to hit me?"

Rollo looked at Gyda when she spoke. He gave her a warm smile. How could he ever be angry with her? She was such a sweet girl. He knew that Ragnar would no doubt not be pleased learning of this. “I won’t breath a word.” He told her with a smile. He would make sure this never left them. It had been a stupid thing to start of with. He would never do it again. He looked over her with a critical eye. His mouth was a thin line. “So am I forgiven or are you still angry?” He asked her with a calm air. He didn’t want push her too much. He looked around him and sighed once more.
He put down what he was doing and then looked at Gyda. “It’s fine if your angry. I still won’t say a word.” He told her with a wry smile. He made sure everything was as it should be. Made sure that not even a speck or dirt was out of place. “Are you alright now?” He asked. He wanted to make sure she was alright. He didn’t know how stubborn she was. If her parents were anything to go by then it would be very stubborn. Even Rollo had a stubborn streak but he was a little worse than Ragnar.
The child nodded her head, “Thanks.” It’ll just be kept between them. Hopefully. ..In the meantime- ”…I’m still a bit mad.” Or would saying upset be better? She wasn’t sure. ..She wasn’t sure what to do either, so she just stood there a bit awkwardly.
Rollo nodded his head in agreement when she told him she was still mad. He could live with that and he supposed that it was deserved. He looked at her and offered her a small smile. "Why don't you sit down Gyda. You're making me nervous" Rollo said with only the slightest tease in his voice. He didn't want to make her even more angry at him. His eyes searched we face for a moment. He gave her a sweet smile. He then bit down on his lip as he sighed. He really didn't want to make her angry. The cold air made him shiver. He made sure to make Gyda a little warmer rather than himself. He could hear the goats in the background.
It was comfortable and familiar. "When are your parents back? And where is Bjorn?" He asked. He didn't think that Ragnar would leave Gyda alone for long. However Rollo was here now so he supposed it didn't matter too much. He was pretty sure they had gone fishing and hunting. He narrowed his eyes as he heard the sour of steps nearby. He made sure his hand was near his knife. He was always a suspicious mind. His eyes then focused on Gyda. He had to make sure his brothers family were safe and well protected.

Athelstan hesitated before reluctantly wrapping his arm around Rollo and leaning against him, wincing slightly. “I… T-Thank you. Just don’t let go…”
Athelstan rubbed his forehead and closed his eyes thinking. “What would I do? Whatever is necessary to survive.” He couldn’t stop the bitterness entering his voice at that. Rollo should probably know better than to ask him for advice on such matters that involved staying true to one set of gods or another… “Even if your son were baptised, it would make no difference if you are not married to his mother…”
Rollo scowled at the priest. His face was dark with rage. His eyes were sparkling with anger. “Make no difference?” He asked darkly. He looked at Athelstan. Distress played on his features. He didn’t want to leave his wife. He certainly didn’t want to marry some whore even I’d she was a princess. She was not the one he loved. The one he had chose to marry willingly. “Do you think I want to marry some whore? Iove my wife priest and I won’t get my land by abandoning her. I will not sacrifice the happiness of my son either” Rollo said with anger pouring from his words. He soon deflated. Poppa had sacrificed a lot for him. He wasn’t about to cast her out. “It’s a cruel thing for the king to do, do you not agree? If he had just given me the land and asked for soldiers I’d be a happy man” Rollo said.
Athelstan cowered slightly at the anger in Rollo’s eyes and voice and he swallowed, holding up his hands weakly in a gesture of surrender. “I-I only mean…a child whose parents were not married when they created him o-or when the mother gave birth to him or at his baptism… The parents have acted in sin and it would be reflected onto the child. His soul wouldn’t be saved…” He looked at Rollo carefully. “I-It is a cruel thing to do. But for all that…I think it is a good thing that you are learning you cannot just take everything you want and have no fear of the consequences…”
Rollo frowned. "My sons soul?" He asked confused. He sighed and then realised it was some Christian thing. He let out a shaky breath. "His soul doesn't need saving! Poppa and I were married at his conception and birth. He's not going to be baptised he follows Thor and Odin" Rollo said. He didn't mean to get angry but it made him upset. He felt like weeping but it would do his family no good. "Yes I'm leaning that. I cannot let my family suffer" Rollo said. He took out the treaty and read over it once more. Poppa had taught him how to read. He began to curse in French and his home tongue. He looked at Athelstan. "I'm sorry my friend for getting angry. Do you need anything?" He asked. His speech was more like a king than ever before. He was learning to be a more pleasant man now.
