❛  misa’s  been  wondering  this  …  ❜  she  begins,  blinking  up  at  ryuzaki  as  she  considers  whether  or  not  she  should  ask  him  the  question.  she  would  ask  light,  but  he  has  been  notably  impatient  today  and  she  doesn’t  wish  to  irritate  him  any  further.  hopefully  she  can  gain  some  insight  from  his  handcuffed  counterpart,  because  this  particular  inquiry  has  been  nagging  misa  since  she  learned  of  the  bizarre  arrangement,  leaving  her  unsettled.  ❛  what  about  nighttime  ?  does  one  of  you  sleep  on  the  floor  ?  the  couch  doesn’t  seem  close  enough  to  the  bed  for  someone  to  sleep  there  …  ❜  does  L  even  sleep  at  normal  hours  ?  maybe  it’s  not  an  issue  and  she’s  just  being  paranoid,  but  she  sincerely  hopes  that  his  response  is  favorable  rather  than  what  she  has  feared  is  the  case.

L spares the girl but a cursory glance, far too engrossed in his work to offer her his full attention. Still, he does his best to heed to her words. The clacking of his keyboard slows and softens as she poses her inquiries.

“ Rest assured, there is nothing unsightly about our sleeping arrangements. ” One of L’s arms is brusquely flung behind him— the result of his cuffed companion bending to retrieve something toppled to the floor. Unlike Light, the detective has grown quite used to these abrupt motions. If not that, then he’s, at the very least, handled them in stride.

“let me guess: you’re still depressed, right?” he’s purposefully curt, palpable tension simmering until its next boil. “we’ll never make any progress with you acting like this. just keep your head down and power through it. that’s what i always tell myself.”

L hooks a thumb against his bottom lip, not in contemplation but rather to stifle the scoff threatening his next breath. “ I believe that may be easier said than done, ” he commences—tone level as usual, betraying none of his irritation. 

Dark eyes, usually devoid of warmth, are illumined as they stand testament to this gesture. He accepts the potato chip with ginger fingertips, inspecting it to the last crumb before finally popping it into his mouth. 

it is my firm belief that had L not passed away during the Kira investigation and actually lived to solve it/convict Light ( also assuming that the events of L: Change the WorLd didn’t transpire ), he would become a lot more socially involved, as well as open to the idea of working with others without needing to completely obscure his identity.

at first glance, this may seem uncharacteristic of him, seeing as L is celebrated as an enigmatic figure / someone with no discernible identity aside from his detective persona. but considering his relationship with the Kira Task Force, both as a group and with each individual, i’d like to think that it helped him better realize the value of not only OPENLY collaborating with others, but also developing a GENUINE connection with them. even after the Kira Task Force became, for lack of a better word, less helpful ( even futile ), L still continued to work alongside them and even set aside separate funds for each of them to be taken care of financially. he cared about everyone on the Task Force!! it wouldn’t be far-fetched to say that he even saw them as friends.

No nasty look, no ulterior motives, no unbecoming questions...

She actually wants to be friends with him.

Naomi was tired. No, not tired, but exhausted. She felt it deep within her entire body and all she wanted to do was relax. It was like everyone at the FBI now was taking it out on her for breaking it off with Raye. What was she supposed to do though? She didn’t love him anymore and didn’t want to spend the rest of her life like that.

At least L didn’t judge her. She approached behind him and rested her head on his shoulder, snaking her arms around his waist. A soft sigh escaped her lips as she tilted her head towards his. All she wanted to do was forget everything for a few hours and hopefully the normally passive detective would agree to her selfish request.

“Cuddle with me? Please…?”

While the sudden display of physical affection didn’t faze the detective, Naomi’s request did. It doesn’t manifest too visibly, though admittedly, he felt his shoulders tense a hairsbreadth once her inquiry was fully voiced. 

Still, L reacts the way he normally would ( or rather had grown used to reacting ). He gently presses a hand into one of hers, gingerly kneading their fingers. Touch is usually something he’s reserved about—not that he was wholly deprived of it, but rather, he didn’t feel particularly inclined to it most of the time. Naomi Misora would pose as one of his exceptions, however. There was something about her grief—her stifled loneliness and exhaustion—that he wished to temper. Or maybe he was just projecting?

The gesture renders L speechless at first, owlish eyes staring the still simmering teacup down. Truth be told, he’s unaccustomed to working in the presence of someone apart from Watari, and the fact that his companion seemed genuinely concerned about his well-being didn’t help any.

Perhaps he would never grow used to this feeling of…was it kinship?

“ Yes, that’s right. Too much sugar, ”  the detective murmurs absentmindedly. He draws one hand to the teacup and another to the bowl of sugar cubes conveniently placed on his left. Wordlessly, he deposits one, two, three, four cubes into the teacup and lifts it to his mouth.

L’s eyes narrow as they divert their focus to the source of the…ahem, obscenity. Upon noting the uncharacteristically slouched form and bored expression, they soften.

Although the detective’s expression remains vacant as ever, there’s an evident tension that suddenly seizes his form. Naomi feels so…warm, sincere—adjectives that he’d yet to use in ( truthfully ) describing someone else.

And as he remains cemented there, awkward and agape, L can’t help but wonder if she feels oppositely.
