yes i served
i saw somewhere someone ask "whats the best needledrop in movies". rhythm of the night beau travail. only time its been done in a way that resonates with the story and doesnt have lyrics going "this is the point of the scene but in lyric form"
more movie stuff, i think car chases are an artform in of itself. i can think of 4 great ones off the dome. jade. ronin. to live and die in la. french connection. ill attach them all below. one of the main thiings i notice in them is the distinct lack of music, reminds me of top gear's section on bullit, their description that the music is the engines. all 4 scenes have long sections with no music, where all you hear is tires squealing, people grunting, etc. these are scenes that take up about 7-9 minutes each. theyre electric. completely alone in the movie, where the emotions are most raw, bare. each car becomes more and more destroyed as the scenes progress. its insane. of these 4, they all do something i dont notice much in other movies with car chases (bonds, bournes, mission impossibles, etc): the lack of actors behind the wheel. what makes these scenes great is seeing the camera shake because of the impact the vehicle makes with the ground. friedkin's works have this shot from the outside of the windshield looking into hte actors face (in jade theres a shot of david caruso from outside his ford sedan, where the camera then pans right to oncoming traffic at an intersection, then pans right again to become a point of view shot of caruso, the black sedan that just killed a witness in a hit and run). these scenes are somewhat expressionistic (the most being in to live and die in la seeing petersen remember the feeling of bungee jumping while being chased and shot at, while pankow has a panic attack in the backseat of their chevrolet sedan. you see how petersen is addicted to the rush, while pankow is a fish out of water, the camera jostling with each bump in the la roads.)
i love car chases. especially when theyre good.

david lynch dying wasnt something that greatly affected me upon learning about it but rewatching some of my favorite things from him and god. what an irreplaceable artistic mind. i think its very rare that an artist, let alone someone working in film, has a distinct style that you are able to identify by their name. godard, varde, maybe even akerman and cassevettes, etc. dont really get that level of individual point of view now or in the past. its a commercial art, not so much a pop art, but commercial. its bound by the dollar. lynch somehow was able to exist in this art form as an american in the american market without ever really needing to adhere to the censors of content or constraints of the audience. in film and tv he held his vision in an almost untouchable manner and asides from like, dune, was able to almost do what he wanted. his greatest virtue, however, is his understanding of people and the mechinations of thoughts, individuality, and power. rest in peace.
oh fuck i can talk about movies on here unfiltered im going to do that now.
saw queer yesterday. very good. wasnt into hte yaga scene but only cause its something that every gay fucker has done at this point i feel like and thats cool but goddddddd daniel craig is an amazing actor i cant get over it. completely transforms into a different being in that scene. cant get over it.
mukdeeprom is probably one of my favorite cinematographers working right now. he does the deakins "every light source is natural and can be found in the frame" thing equally well (their movies dont look the same but thats cause they work w different people and i love that they dont work for the same people because as much as i loathe deakins for being boring his stuff still looks great but he's more of a master of image stills to post on twitter than a moving image person. i will retract this statement when he works on things that arent action movies, or if he still works on action movies he does more of a robbie müller thing like in to live and die in la). i love how with mukdeeprom you dont notice the camera at all (deakins philosophy) until the few moments where you do. and when you notice the camera its amazing. sudden pans, tilts, combination pans and tilts, or the tennis ball pov, its amazing.
