In short:

they didn't actually measure changes in learning; they measured theta waves which don't have a clear link to learning

They evaluated adults, not children

They didn't have participants do any encoding activities; they were mindlessly typing the same thing over and over

They didn't allow participants to actually type; they had them 'type' with one finger of their right hand, when there's plenty of evidence that using both hands while encoding information leads to increased brain activity.

They couldn't see what they were typing (no visual feedback), so any error-correction processes the brain would usually run were impaired

The handwriting part of the experiment was completely normal and representative of using handwriting to record information.

They didn't actually report the raw data or conduct any statistical analysis for the two parts of the experiment individually; only the differences between the two groups.

I mean, look, I love the idea of "writing by hand helps with learning" because it sounds good. There's a feel good to it I can appreciate, and as someone who was worked for hours upon hours to have beautiful penmanship, I was ready to accept this.

But I've also written two books by hand, and I've written several books via typing, and there's no difference cognitively speaking. If anything, typing is more efficient, easier to edit, and less stress on my fingers because I would often write pages and pages within a day until half my left hand was bruised.

This is just one of those posts I'm glad I went all the way through, because my initial knee-jerk reaction was "huh, neat." followed by "I don't know if this tracks..." and then ending with "Oooooooh, okay. That makes sense" when I got down to the last bit about how it was basically the writing version of the vaccines cause autism paper. (i.e. the author had an end result they wanted, and made everything fit that).

Often considered the weakest of all Starter Pokémon, Meganium had been waiting for a new form for 25 years- before Mega Meganium finally made it into the powerhouse it's always deserved to be! Mega Meganium is the sole Pokémon to have the ability Mega Sol, an ability that allows all its moves to have the effects of harsh sunlight, no matter the weather. This is due to the four flowers on its neck having the capacity to store vast amounts of solar energy, allowing it to fire off Solar Beams without the charge turn- a move that's known as Mega Sol Cannon when Mega Meganium uses it. And those blasts hurt! Mega Meganium gains a whopping 60 points in its Special Attack, putting it at 143, and it also gains an additional Fairy typing, letting it also do tremendous damage to the Dragon types that would otherwise resist its Grass moves. Other than the powerful beams it can produce, Mega Meganium's flowers also can create and emit a fragrant substance that can either calm down or greatly agitate those that inhale it, and this Pokémon isn't afraid to take advantage of it to win battles! Where regular Meganium is rather docile, Mega Meganium is far more confident and bold in battle, backed up by tough defenses and an increased strength. Careful it doesn't get overconfident and go on a rampage! But if anyone's earned that right, for its patience alone, it's gotta be Meganium!

The more points a group “scores” on the model, the more of a cult it is.

I think this model is the best one for several reasons:

It’s more nuanced than “cult” or “not cult” and doesn’t make false equivalences between groups

It’s versatile, applying to groups big and small, and cults of all kinds, religious, political, financial, etc.

This is a great example of Thought Control used by cults whenever they’re confronted with criticism.

Not all high-control groups are religious. Secular cults exist.
