"Uh– Why didn't you ring the doorbell or something?"

"Well, 'cause I can't risk having your parents open the door right now. You need to be the first one to see it." You justify, shifting the weight of your body to your right foot. "Just come down already before I give up and leave, it's too cold for me to be standing out here for so long."

He laughs again. "Ooh, someone's mysterious today. Sure, see you in just a sec."

Beomgyu hangs up, so you put your phone back in the pocket of your jacket and grab the box you'd just left on the floor while you called your friend. It's wrapped in a cute wrapping paper in pastel colors with adorable little tigers drawn all over it — you intentionally got the most childish-looking option you could possibly find —, and it's somewhat thin on one side, but it's still a large package.

You can hear some steps hurriedly coming down the stairs and towards the door. The doorknob turns and soon a very disheveled Beomgyu greets you with a smile as sleepy as his eyes. He looks cute, but you keep it to yourself.

"You know you c–" He cuts himself off when you offer him the box, practically shoving it against his chest. "What's that?" His eyebrows furrow in suspicion, but he grabs it anyway.

"Happy birthday!" You say in a singsong voice. "And yes, yes, I know it's not your birthday yet, but this thing arrived earlier than it should've and it was just sitting in my bedroom, so…"

He narrows his eyes and looks at you, then he shakes the box to try and figure out what it is.

"Hmm. You know you didn't need to get me anything though, right?"

"Really? Oh, silly me, I had no idea! Well then, let me just–" You pretend like you're gonna take the box from his hands, but he pulls it back.

"Hey! No takebacks now." Beomgyu pouts and you laugh.

"You're literally a child. Are you gonna let me in or am I supposed to freeze to death out here?"

"Oh. Right, sorry." He runs a hand through his messy hair and steps aside, giving you enough space to walk in. "Please come in."

And so you do. After you take off your shoes, he takes you upstairs to his bedroom, and you greet his mother on the way with a smile and a polite bow. She used to be suspicious of you at first, but after nearly two years of you and her son constantly orbiting around each other, you might as well be seen as part of the furniture at this point.

The bedroom door is left ajar, mostly because of his parents, and both of you sit on his bed, which is currently a mess, considering he literally just woke up.

He lays the box on the bed and stares at it for a moment, instead of just opening it.

"Go ahead, dude." You encourage him. "It's not like… the best I could find, but it's the best I could afford, so I hope you like it."

He looks at you with curious eyes before turning his attention back to the box. You're actually unsure about this present, so you're nervously fidgeting with the hem of your jacket. Beomgyu doesn't seem to notice it, though. His total focus is on the package.

"Can I rip it?" His gaze finds yours once again, so you end up laughing.

"Sure, kid."

A smile is formed on his lips, and his hands quickly rip the wrapping paper to reveal the box inside. It's a simple carton box, not much on it, just the logo of the brand and the model of the microphone you purchased. He soon opens the box as well, and there's a whole microphone set in there. You know, microphone, boom arm, pop filter, the whole deal.

You've been trying to be supportive since he told you he wants to be a musician. He sounded so excited about it, too, you couldn't help but be there for him. You know most families usually scoff at the idea when their kid says they wanna be an artist of any kind — God knows your dad didn't take it well when you said you're thinking about being a photographer, so you can only imagine he'd disown you if you ever decided to go for something like music —, so it's important that his friends support him through it. Taehyun is 100% on board with it as well, as anyone could imagine. To be honest, he's probably the most supportive person you've ever met.

As for the microphone, you actually spent a long time doing research about it. You wanted to make sure that, even if it wasn't the best or the most expensive thing in the world, the quality would still be good. So you spent multiple hours of multiple days reading and watching reviews on YouTube and other websites to make sure you'd spend the money you saved on the best possible option within your budget.

"As I told you, it's not the best of the best, but I think it should be enough to get you started, you know? You mentioned you wanna start making videos, so I think having a decent mic will help you with the quality of the audio. It's got really good reviews, too, so I hope it lives up to my expectations." You let out a short awkward laugh. "However, if you don't like it, we can always return it, it's okay! We can get you something else if you want. I w–"

"Y/N." He interrupts you, noticing you're about to ramble too much out of nervousness. "It's perfect. I mean it." He scoots closer to you and gives you a nice hug, followed by a kiss on your cheek. You try to ignore how nice and warm it feels. "Thank you."

"Oh. Are you sure?" You ask, still engulfed in his arms. You, for one, are certainly not sure about it. Now that he has it, you keep thinking you could've gotten him something nicer. Maybe you shouldn't even have gone with a microphone at all, maybe something else would've been a better idea.

"Can I use this boom arm to hit you on the head?" He lets go of you and holds your shoulders, pulling you back just enough to stare at you with a raised eyebrow. "Come on, this is the best present I could possibly get."

You laugh and jokingly punch his chest. "Now you're just saying things to make me smile."

He ends up smiling just because you're doing it too. "I mean, I do like making you smile. But no, for real. You've been so supportive and I don't think you even realize how important that is to me."

You sigh and reach for his hair. "You're a mess right now." You say as you lazily run your fingers through the untidy strands, trying to comb them back into place. It's your way of changing the subject. He's always been supportive of you as well, so you don't think it should be considered a great thing that you're doing the same for him. It's just… You're trying to be a good friend, that's all.

The closeness and the touches don't seem to bother him. Both of you are used to being touchy in a completely platonic way, so it's just like saying hi to each other. Or at least it should be.

"Yeah, whatever, I'm still hot." He scoffs and leans closer to plant a kiss on your forehead, as if that would make you any less nervous. Little does he know it just gets your heart racing even more. "Stop overthinking, okay? I really loved it and I'll put it to good use."

You smile faintly and nod, accepting his words. "Yeah, I know you will."

He finally stands up, taking the box to his desk so he can check each piece individually. You take the opportunity to lie back on his bed, staring at the ceiling for a moment.

Said moment doesn't last long, though.

"The fuck do you think you're doing right now, sunshine?" Beomgyu asks in a playful tone and comes closer to the bed once again. He stands beside it, close enough for you to see his face staring down at you, with his hands on his hips. "Come on, help me out, we gotta set this thing up. You can lie down later."

"Oh, but I'm so tired!" You dramatically swing an arm over your eyes and roll to the side, burying your face in his blankets. "Go ahead, you can do it yourself, I believe in you. It's not that hard." To be honest, you're just being dramatic for shits and giggles, you're not actually tired at all.

"Y/N, come onnn… I'll even let you pick the song for my first video ever. You gave me a special present, now you have to help me with it. It's an important moment!"

You hum in response. "Tempting… But it requires me standing up."

"You can sit on my chair." He offers, to which you groan.

"I'll still have to walk all the way there."

"Oh my G–" He cuts himself with some light laughter. "Where'd I get such a lazy friend?"

"You don't know the address of your own school?" You roll once again, so you can go back to staring at him. "Grab a pen and some paper, I'll say it slowly for you. It's–"

"I'm gonna attack you." He cuts you off, still playful.

You gasp, bringing a hand to your chest in a theatrical manner. "How dare you threaten me like that, Sir Beomgyu? A knight in shining armor should never behave that way."

He stifles a laugh and offers you a hand. "Are you gonna help me or not, princess?"

The two of you sometimes call each other by pet names or play this whole knight and princess thing as a way to poke fun at the rumors you've heard at school, and you know it's just that: a joke, but lately you've been starting to feel affected by it whenever he drops one of those nicknames.

It doesn't help that just a second after you shake your head in response and slap his hand away, he leans over you, kneeling on the bed, and starts tickling your sides.

"AHH BEOMGYU–" You squeal and burst into laughter, of course, struggling to try to escape from him, but he's all over you and knows your weak spots. "STOP THAT– HAHAHAHA LET ME GO!!!"

He's laughing along with you, having fun with the whole scene. "You see, that's what lazy princesses get! Are you gonna surrender, your Highness?"

You try to tickle him back, but it's kind of hard to get to him, as he dodges your every attempt while still managing to keep his hands on you.

"AT LEAST LET ME BREATHE, YOU DICKHEAD!" You demand, still laughing way too much, instead of giving him an answer.

"Fine!" He takes his hands off you, but he's still pretty much hovering above you. "You okay?" His fingers gently brush away the strands of hair that have fallen all over your face, still smiling as his eyes scan your flustered face. So instead of answering, you take the opportunity to try a counterattack and tickle him. Unfortunately, he's quick to grab your wrists, holding them between the two of you. "Ha, do you think you can fool me? I know you like the back of my hand, princess."

His laughter fills your ears once more, and it's not like he's too close, but he's still technically on top of you at this point, so it's close enough to create a whirlwind in your chest.

"I hate you." You state, still coming down from your hysterical state of just a moment ago.

He scoffs and leans a little closer, still holding your wrists. His grip is not too strong, because he wouldn't wanna hurt you, so you could probably get rid of him very easily if you tried. "Do you want me to do it again, your Highness?"

You know he's trying to sound playfully menacing, but his lips distract you for a second there.

You wanna kiss him, you know you wanna kiss him, and you can do it if you just move your face a tiny little bit towards him, but you also know you shouldn't even think about kissing him. It's totally off-limits, it's not something that should be even crossing your mind when he's doing nothing but acting the same way he always does. Taehyun's also very touchy with you, and you never felt so nervous around him because of that. It's pathetic.

Before you get the chance to speak, you hear three knocks on the door. Both you and Beomgyu look at it right away, just to see his mother's head peeking inside to check on you.

"Is everything okay around here?" She asks, and you wish you could dig a hole and bury yourself in it right now. Since you can't, you just avoid her gaze.

"Yeah, sorry if we're being loud." Beomgyu replies, finally letting go of you, and you can hear him grinning without even looking at him. "We're just playing around."

"Alright. Keep the door open, okay?"

Oh dear God, you're gonna die.

Beomgyu, on the other hand, is apparently having the time of his life.

"Sure, mom. Love you!" He calls out while she leaves, as if he's not practically straddling you.

You push him off of you and he falls on his back right beside you on the mattress, laughing his stupid ass off.

You can't help but chuckle. "This is why people gossip about us so much, you can't keep your damn hands to yourself, you thirsty bitch."

But on the inside, you're still about to explode while Beomgyu's windshield-wiper laugh resonates in your ears.

"Did you see her face?"

"No, you moron, I was too embarrassed to even look at her!"

"Oh, she definitely thought she was about to become a grandmother right then and there." How can he find this so amusing? It's completely beyond you.

You turn to face him and slap his arm, ignoring how much your face is burning up. "You'll pay for this, you know?"

He laughs even more and turns his body to look back at you. "Mhmm. Not scared of you, cutie." He boops your nose.

You narrow your eyes. "You should be."

"Should I?" His face comes closer once again, his nose nearly touching yours, and at this point it just feels like God is taunting you. "What are you gonna do, hm?"

Beomgyu looks genuinely happy right now. He's beaming, but you don't know what exactly might be the reason for that. Maybe it's your presence, maybe it's your moral support, maybe it's just the microphone he got. Hell, it might even be just the fact that he got caught by his mom in a suspicious position on top of you and nearly gave her a heart attack, which seems to be hilarious to him. Doesn't matter, as long as he keeps smiling like that. He probably has no idea how much that smile means to you, but you're grateful you're able to see it up close.

"You'll see soon enough." You pinch his cheek and sit up, trying to breathe without Beomgyu clouding your thoughts and your sight. "Let's get that mic working already, since you apparently can't do anything without my help."

"Now I don't wanna do it anymore."

You squint your eyes at him and he just smiles. Son of a bitch. So you do the obvious thing: grab his pillow and hit him on the face with it.

"Get up. Right now."

“hey,” he replies. he shifts upright on the bed, spine straightening. you take a cautious step forward, slowly closing the distance between your bodies.

“are you hungry?” he asks.

you nod.

“good.” he reaches out for your hand. “because i was thinking…” instead of finishing the sentence, he tugs you closer. his arms circle your waist. you settle against him, your balance adjusting to his shape.

“you were thinking?” you echo, but the words falter as his lips brush along your jawline. you’re distracted by the electric shiver that dances down your spine.

“yeah,” he hums, each syllable pressed into your skin. “i was thinking we could stay here and order room service. i mean… unless you’d rather leave.”

you shake your head immediately. “no. i don’t want to leave.”

his smile ghosts across your lips before he murmurs again. “good.” then his tongue flicks along your bottom lip. your lips part for him instinctively, and everything else disappears.

july 26th 2025, 11:36am

the remnants of your breakfast linger on the dining table. you sit perched beside yeonjun, your legs draped over his. one of your hands toys idly with the last strawberry on your plate, its dark red juice staining your thumb.

yeonjun watches you. “so…” he starts. “it’s our last full day here.”

you hum in response. you don’t look up at first. you’re too busy reaching over the table for a napkin. you dab your fingers clean before turning towards him fully. “what did you want to do today?”

yeonjun doesn’t answer right away. he glances back at the bed, rumpled and still warm, and then back at you. the corner of his mouth tugs into a smirk. “well… i could think of a few things we could do.

you snort, shaking your head as you shove his shoulder lightly. “i’m serious.”

“i am too,” he grins. his expression quickly fades into something more thoughtful. his fingers drift to the back of your legs, tracing idle shapes. 

“what are you thinking about?” you try to drag him back to reality.

his eyes flick to you. “what if we went to the wedding?”

“wait, you want to?”

“i kind of feel like i have to.”

you sit up straighter, your legs sliding from his lap to the floor. “you know we don’t have to, like if you feel uncomfortable, we can find something else to do.”

yeonjun shakes his head. “no, no. i want to.” his tone is a lot firmer now, but there is an uncertainty in his voice that makes you think twice.

july 26th 2025, 4:07pm

the chapel smells faintly of old wood and the sweetness of the floral arrangements lining the aisles in carefully arranged bursts of white and soft peach. you and yeonjun slip into a pew near the back. the seats were already filling quickly and neither of you wanted to draw attention.

yeonjun adjusts his cuff as he sits. although you can tell he is nervous, his expression remains unreadable.

soon, the murmuring of the crowd around you falls into a hush. the orchestra begins to play  and the processional begins.

the wedding party comes one by one and then finally yeji steps through the doors. you can almost feel the collective intake of breath in the room as she steps forward, her father walking beside her. her dress, with all its lace and silk and beads, cascades around her like a dream. the stained glass casts delicate colors across her gown, making her look like she is entirely otherworldly.

you look back at yeonjun, whose eyes, like everyone else’s, are fixed on her as she makes her way to the altar, where soobin is holding his breath, posture straight, hands clasped in front of him.

you reach for his hand. his fingers twitch beneath yours. then slowly, his hand turns over and he threads his fingers through yours.

july 26th 2025, 8:20pm

you return from the bathroom to find yeonjun sitting at your table, half a drink sweating in his hand. “i’m not going to let you sit around on our last night here.”  you tell him. your fingers tug at his arm gently.

yeonjun lifts his head slowly. “i’m not a dancer,” he mumbles sheepishly, like he is hoping that by saying it soft enough, you will let him off the hook.

“mm,” you raise an eyebrow. “and what did we say about lying?”

a reluctant smile curls at the corner of his mouth, and he lets you lead him onto the dancefloor. at first, you notice that he is overly aware of himself, but as you keep dancing, his movements loosen.

and when the tempo slows, his hands settle at your waist. you step closer to him, your arms looping around his neck, your fingers brushing the hair at his nape. you sway together, moving slowly.

“have i told you how pretty you look tonight?” yeonjun asks out of nowhere.

you giggle. “no, actually, i don’t think you have.”

“well,” his eyes are fixed on yours now, “you look very, very beautiful.”

“oh wow. two ‘verys’?”

“yup,” he grins. “two ‘verys’.”

a comfortable silence falls between the two of you. you keep swaying.

“i know i’ve said this before,” yeonjun begins again, “but thank you again. for this week.”

“you don’t have to thank me,” you say quietly.

“no, i do. i don’t think i could have made it through by myself.” his thumb draws a slow, unconscious circle at your waist.

“well, you’re welcome.”

his face colors. he glances down quickly, a faint laugh escaping.

“what?” you ask. you tilt your head, though you are not doing anything to hide your amusement.

“the way you’re looking at me,” he mutters, still avoiding your gaze.

“consider this payback for this morning.” you tease.

“what did i do this morning?” he finally looks at you, raising his eyebrow.

“you embarrassed me,” you reply as though it is the most obvious thing in the world.

“i embarrassed you?” he repeats, incredulous. “by what? asking the girl i like to stop hiding in the bathroom?”

you gasp, dramatically and over the top, but your heart skips for real. “you like me?” you coo.

“was that not obvious? i asked you to come with me to my brother’s wedding.”

you lean in and press your lips to his.

he is sitting on a lounge chair, hunched in on himself. “hey,” you say, as you walk over to him. you stop beside him, just close enough to offer comfort but far enough to give him room to breathe. but he doesn’t look up when he feels you next to him.

“are you okay,” you ask, crouching a little to catch a glimpse of his face. he lifts his head slowly. his eyes are red and the skin around them is puffy and flushed. his lashes cling together in wet little clusters. “sorry,” you mutter, retracting a little. you shake your head. “that was a stupid question.”

yeonjun lets out a short, dry laugh. “i’m sorry for leaving you there.” he murmurs.

you sit down on the lounge chair opposite him. “do you want to talk about it?”

“i just had to get out of there.”

“is this because of…” you start, then falter.

he nods before you finish. his chest rises and falls. “it’s less about my dad,” he says. his eyes flicking away from yours. “and more about soobin.” he adds, “i know you think he’s nice and everything, but he is seriously an asshole.”

you nod. “we don’t have to go to the wedding.”

his mouth opens slightly, then closes. “i know,” he swallows. “i just keep thinking, ‘what would people say?’”

“who cares?”

he hesitates. “my parents.”

you frown. “who cares what your parents think?”

“i mean, i don’t but at the same time, i do?” he shakes his head. “i don’t know. i shouldn’t have come.” his voice cracks at the end and he looks away again.

you shoot up from your seat. “okay, up.” you direct him.

he blinks. “what?”

“get up.” you repeat. “we’re leaving.” you reach out your hand and he stares at it for a moment before placing his own in yours.

you pull him up gently to his feet. “where are we going?”

you start leading him off the pool deck. “well, you left before the entrees even came out, and i’m starving,” you say, glancing back at him with a teasing smile. “and we can’t go back in there, so let’s find something to eat.”

“where do you want to go?”

“i think that egg tart place is calling my name.” you grin, and he rolls his eyes.

july 25th 2025, 10:45pm

you walk back to the hotel, stomach full. yeonjun is by your side, his steps are slower and more relaxed now. his fingers are intertwined with yours as you walk to the elevator. inside, you both stand in comfortable silence.

the elevator stops with a gentle jolt and you both step out. when you get to the door of your room, yeonjun halts. he looks down at the keycard in his hand. for a moment, he doesn’t move. his thumb lightly brushes against the edge of the card.

he looks up at you and smiles. “thank you,” he says.

“for?”

“for tonight,” he answers. “for being here with me… for having my back this week.”

you smile. “of course,” you reply softly. you slightly sway in your step.

his eyes shift to your lips, and your breath catches instinctively. you match him as well, your eyes dropping to his teeth grazing over the plump skin of his lips. when your eyes meet again, the air around you seems to shift.

yeonjun angles his body slightly towards you, slowly closing the gap between your bodies. it seems like time is slowing down and you are desperately trying to think of something other than your heart rate rapidly increasing as he moves closer and closer to you.

you can feel the heat from his body, and the weight of his attention focused entirely on you. you open your mouth to say something, but yeonjun leans closer to you and the words catch in your throat.

she taps the key card and the green light clicks. the suite is quiet and dark when she enters. soobin is splayed across the bed, half out of the covers, one arm thrown over his eyes, the other hanging limp over the side. his chest rises and falls steadily. he doesn’t move when she enters.

“soob?” she calls out gently.

he lets out a low groan that is half muffled by the pillow.

she walks towards him. her heels thud dully against the carpet until she kicks them off one by one. they land carelessly near the foot of the bed. she lowers herself onto the edge of the bed. the tiara finally tumbles off her head and onto the comforter.

“seems like you had fun,”

soobin turns his head towards the ceiling. “it was fun until it wasn't,” he mumbles.

“did something happen?”

“i just can’t believe i thought this would work.”

she blinks. “what would work?”

“you, me. yeonjun.”

yeji scoffs. “i’m not sure what you expected.”

“i’m trying to make things right, but you–”

her spine straightens. “there’s a lot of things you can say about me,” she interrupts. “but i am not the reason your brother hates you. and i’m not going to let you put that on me.”

“that’s not what i said.” soobin pushes himself upright slowly.

she turns to face him fully now, her knees brushing his. “soobin, i am so sorry that you don’t have the relationship you want with yeonjun, but it is not my fault.”

“i’m just saying you keep aggravating him.”

“are you joking?”

“i heard everything at dinner.” his voice rises in frustration. “you literally cornered him. i heard everything.”

“i did that for you.”

“i didn’t ask you to do that.” he fires back. yeji’s chest rises and falls. she opens her mouth, then closes it. “you’re making everything worse.” soobin continues. “you need to stop talking to him. stop meddling. just… just stop.”

her eyes sting. she blinks hard, but one tear escapes anyway. she presses the heel of her palm to her eye and wipes it quickly. “you’re drunk,” her voice trembles but she tries with all her might to maintain her composure. “you’re drunk and i’m not going to have this conversation right now.”

she stands, stiffly grabbing her phone from the nightstand and her clutch from the floor.

“where are you going?” he asks.

yeji doesn’t look back as she crosses the room. “to the other room. i’ll see you tomorrow.” she leaves the room.

july 24th 2025, 12:59am

yeonjun had just gotten to the room when he heard you on the other side of the door, rustling clumsily through your bag. a sharp jingle of a zipper and then a frustrated huff before rapid, uneven knocking on the door.

the door swings open before your fist can meet it again. “oh, hi.” you say. you sway in the doorway. your clutch hangs half open under your arm.

“hi,” he says under his breath. he wraps an arm around your back and guides you in. he helps you to the bed, hand steady on your waist as you let yourself fall back.

yeonjun kneels at the edge of the bed. he reaches for your ankle and unstraps your heels, one at a time. then he gets up.

a pout forms on your lips. you open your eyes just enough to catch his silhouette walking away from you. “no,” you whine, dragging out the word. “where are you going?”

but he doesn’t answer. he only disappears into the bathroom. you hear the soft clatter of plastic, the shuffle of his footsteps, the faucet turning on and off. yeonjun returns holding your bottle of micellar water in one hand and a small stack of cotton rounds in the other.

you sit up slowly as he walks over to you. he sits on the edge of the bed and dips the cotton round against the bottle top.

he lifts your chin with two fingers. he starts to wipe the makeup from your face – carefully tracing your cheekbones, the edges of your lips, the smudged mascara beneath your eyes.

“you’re such a good boyfriend,” you tease.

“i try.”

“you’ve done this for other girls before?”

“just chaewon,”

you hum in response. you lean forward, your balance tipping slightly until your hands find his  jaw. your thumb caresses his cheek. “you have really great skin,” you whisper.

“thanks,” he chuckles.

you tug gently at the collar of his shirt, pulling him closer until his forehead almost touches your, until his breath mingles with yours. his lips are parted slightly, unsure. his hands hover near your thighs but they don’t touch you.

“what are you doing?”

now you don’t answer. instead, your eyes trace the curve of his lips and then you close between you, pressing your mouth to his.

he kisses you back. his hands slips around your waist, fingers rubbing circles on the skin between where your shirt ends and your pants begin.

but then he pulls away abruptly.

“why did you…” your voice fades out.

yeonjun exhales sharply. “you’re drunk.”

“i’m not that drunk,” you protest. your fingers tighten around the front of his shirt, like you’re afraid he’ll step further away.

he gently grabs your hand and peels it from his chest, lowering it into your lap. “you are drunk,” he says softly. it’s almost like he’s reminding himself too. “and you’re my friend.”

you blink. then nod. “right, sorry.” you shift back, putting space between you.

yeonjun stands abruptly. he doesn’t look at you for a moment. “i’m going to get you some water.” he disappears into the bathroom again.

the waiter comes to the table. he sets down four menus in front of you. this gives everyone an excuse to pretend to look busy.

soobin is the first to break the spell. he lowers his menu, propping his elbows on the table as he smiles. “i’m glad we get to do this.”

yeji turns her head towards him and smiles. she threads her fingers with his and gives his hand a soft squeeze. her bracelets shift with a light jingle.

yeonjun lets out a low hum. “yup.”

soobin’s eyes shift across the table and land on you. “yn, how are you?”

it catches you off guard. “i’m good,” you answer quietly.

“i wanted to apologize,” soobin continues. “that we didn’t get to speak on sunday night.”

you nod. “it’s all good. i was, um…” you glance down at the table, eyes tracking a water ring that is fading into the wood. “i was tired anyway.”

the waiter returns to take your orders.

when he leans, yeji leans forward. “i’m so curious: how did you guys meet?”

“we’re neighbors.” yeonjun answers too quickly.

“i’ve lived in that building for a while and he moved in, like, last year?” you tilt your head towards him. he nods to confirm. “and we hung out a little and became friends and… here we are.” you reach for his hand, squeezing it lightly before leaning your head toward his shoulder.

yeonjun kisses the crown of your head.

the group falls into a silence again.the waiter reappears like clockwork, delivering everyone’s drink orders.

you glance across the table, then back to your drink. “how do you guys feel?” you ask. “about the wedding? are you nervous?”

sooobin is the first to answer. “i honestly feel fine.” he says, reaching for his glass. “like… calm?”

yeji nods. “i’m usually neurotic about planning.” she adds. “but wedding planning has been surprisingly easy.”

“that’s good.” you say. yeonjun takes a long sip of his drink beside you.

“have you guys thought about marriage?”

you laugh. “god, no.” the words spill from your lips before you realize what you said. yeji and soobin exchange a look. then they both glance back at you. you straighten up. “i mean– we’re not thinking about that right now.”

“we’re just enjoying getting to know each other.” yeonjun adds. you think it’s the first time he’s spoken an entire sentence all evening.

“i didn’t think you were the marriage type.” yeji’s face scrunches as she scrutinizes yeonjun.

you tilt your head. “him?”

“yes,” she continues.

you raise an eyebrow. “you must have the wrong guy.” you laugh. “he literally cries every time we watch the wedding scene in mamma mia.”

yeonun mumbles beside you. “i told you there was something in my eyes.”

“that excuse only works after the first time.”

july 22nd 2025, 9:30pm

you are not sure what exactly did it, but everyone quickly became comfortable. somewhere between the second drink and your third comment about yeonjun (partially to get him back for all the lying he had been doing) all the ice had finally melted and the conversation was flowing. even yeonjun had not snapped back one. through out the dinner, you watched him closely. everytime the table laughed, he would lean back, crossing his arms. but, you could have sworn you saw him smiling, or at least trying to hide his smile.

after dinner, soobin excuses himself from the table. he slips out of the booth and disappears into the bathroom. yeji watches him go and then reaches for the last sip of her wine.

the room spins slightly when you blink. the two and a half glasses of wine you’ve had is starting to get to your head. absentmindedly, you lean into yeonjun, resting your head on his shoulder. your eyes flutter shut for a moment. yeonjun instinctively moves his arm around your back.

“you guys are really so cute,” you hear yeji say. “i’m happy for you.”

yeonjun scoffs. “thanks.”

“i’m serious.” she shifts in her seat. her bracelets clink softly as she rests her elbows on the table. “i am so happy for you.”

he exhales through his nose. “i guess i’m happy for you too.”

“you guess?”

yeonjun chuckles. “i mean, i am happy for you too, yeji.”

“i meant what i said on sunday.” her voice is quieter now. “i’m very sorry that everything happened like that.”

yeonjun doesn’t move. “i don’t need an apology from you,” he says finally.

“then what do you need?” her voice is still soft. “because he really wanted you to be here, and i feel like since you got here, you have been treating him like shit.

“just because i don’t have magical amnesia, i’m treating him like shit?”

“he’s trying.”

yeonjun’s hand rises to his face. he pinches the bridge of his nose between his thumb and forefinger and sighs. “you are the last person i want to talk to about this, yeji.”

her mouth tightens. “i’m just saying you could try too.”

and then, as if summoned by the tension, soobin reappears. he slides into the booth beside her with a smile. “miss me?” he asks playfully, pressing a kiss to her cheek.

yeonjun clears his throat.

soobin glances between his brother and his fiancee. “are you guys ready to go?”

yeonjun nods. he shifts beside you, nudging your thigh gently. “ready?” he murmurs/

you blink, your eyes slow to open and nod. he takes your hand and helps you out of the booth. your legs wobble slightly and your grip his arm.

the two of you trail behind yeji and soobin, who are walking ahead, laughing again. you try to match their pace but give up halfway through the attempt because if you walk faster, you worry that you might vomit all over the poolside.

yeonjun slows with you. “are you okay?” he asks after you stumble a bit.

you pause, nodding. “i’m good.” you take a deep breath and try to recenter yourself. the two of you keep walking. you notice yeonjun’s jaw tense as he looks ahead at the couple in front of you.

“are you okay?” you ask him now.

“i’m fine.”
