Iron Lung is a very confusing movie. It doesn’t tell you the whole story right there in front of your eyes. You gotta look for the details. Simon was a “butcher” said plainly in text. More specifically, you can take that as him being some sort of muscle or solider.

You are in mind numbing agony at the start. Like curled up, fully can’t think of anything agony. You kinda have a full one track mind that isn’t really saying much besides “oh my god I’m so hungry rn” lmao

That agony??? That agony you were feeling so much of a second ago??? The one that made it so you couldn’t even think??? Yeah that’s gone now. Your stomach got used to the feeling. You aren’t okay, but the pain is just gone now.

I literally can’t remember seeing at that time. I think maybe in some way my mind was totally dissociated from my body, but I truly couldn’t remember where I was the entire time.

When you do get food, you don’t want to eat it. Because it hurts to think about food, so you want to avoid food. Even when you need food so badly.

Your stomach gets used to how much you eat. If you have a period of time when there was barely anything going in, it’ll see that as the level you can handle. If you’re used to eating a small portion of food each day, you will get full much faster with anything bigger than that.

Your body will cling to fat as much as possible once it realizes it is getting more food now, but then it will drop fast once it gets used to the new normal. You still won’t be able to eat much, but you’ll gain and lose weight like crazy.

Getting hunger pains again will be weird and overwhelming. Your brain will block out the pain after a while feeling it, but as you start to heal and get regular meals, the regular ol cramps in your stomach will be shocking.

If your food was controlled (example, not being allowed to eat for whatever reason) your mind remembers it. You start feeling this pull to keep these rules controlling it.

Dehydration will kill you so much faster your brain is way more desperate for it than it would be for food.

You get extremely tired so fast but you could die!!! So don’t fall asleep!!!

I used to use bathroom breaks as an excuse to stick my head under the faucet and gulp up sink water. Or showers I would sit there as long as possible drinking the spray before it got suspicious and I had to wash up.

While you get this urge not to eat when presented with food and starving, that DOES NOT apply to being dehydrated and presented with water. It’s life or death if you don’t get that water in less than 3 days.

Seriously if Grace ever ran out of water he would be done for. Starvation and sickness be damned he would die without water first.

Sleep deprivation is fun!! Lots of fun stuff come out of it.

Your body also starts to completely shut down way faster than if you’re starving. If you are starving AND not able to sleep, you will die much faster. You’re getting absolutely no energy and it will zap you dead fast.

You can start to sleep however your body can get it. I figured out I can sleep standing/sitting up with my eyes completely open.

The first hallucinations you get are bugs. It’s always bugs. All over your body. Tiny ant-like bugs under your skin being so itchy and all over you. And you don’t have the mind to realize it’s not real. To you, the bugs are a fact.

Most other hallucinations I’ve had were auditory. I don’t know if that is directly part of sleep deprivation, but I just know when I would be without sleep, it felt like I was hearing alarms and people talking when it was just me sitting there in the dark lmao.

Your body will see staying up too long as a threat after a while. I would be filled with so much fight or flight energy just staying up past 10pm.

Your body can also develop a sleep disorder to combat you not sleeping!!! People who have had a habit of staying up too late as a child could develop narcolepsy or narcoleptic symptoms from that!!! Now I fall asleep if nothings occupying my mind for 10 minutes lol.

I physically cannot handle staying up late anymore. It’s not possible. I did an all nighter once cause I really liked this book I was reading and I was completely not functional.
