he thought nothing when the teacher assigned him to sit next to you in middle school; ‘just another random girl’ was what he thought you would be.
“hey! whats your name?” a voice rang out next to him.
“my nam–” as he turned to reply, he found himself at a loss for words,
he was dumbfounded at the sight bestowed infront of him. the 8am sunlight spilled softly onto the strands of your hair before settling at your eyes, giving it the soft glow as you smile at him softly.
the light he saw in your eyes never died since that day.
from exchanging names to contact numbers, you and he became close. he unconsciously finds himself looking for you. cracking stupid jokes just to see a glimpse of the sparks in your eyes as you chuckle.
undoubtedly, the “you” and “i” became “us”. he supported you through your lows and celebrated with you through your highs.
even on the days where it felt like nothing was happening, life moving by in a blur, slowly yet quickly at the same time, his presence alone grounded you.
he knew that he could never let you go.
one winter during highschool he asks to meet you to meet him a park downtown. cars passed by, the snow slowly pile up by the the unshoveled sidewalk. you arrive on time, greeting him with the same smile, kind glowing eyes, and the grace that you carried on the day you first met.
he took your cold hands in his and asks the question, “may i be your boyfriend?”
without missing a beat, you don’t hesitate to accept and pulled him into the tightest hug. not even a snowstorm could take away the warmth shared by the both of you at this moment.
years passed as though someone is flipping through the pages of a happy story, so happy, yet it goes by so quickly that you both don’t realize.
through graduation photos, apartment hunting, many shared takeout boxes, arguments that never lasted to the morning, and the way you greet him every morning while the sunlight painted over your body, he has never regretted being with you even for a split second.
he knew who he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, so he bought the right. simple yet elegant, just like how the glow of your eyes has always captivated him,
the velvet box stays tucked in his pocket, waiting for the right moment when he would finally ask the question.
as he sat down in his office’s breakroom to enjoy his lunch, thinking about asking for your hand in marriage over dinner in the restaurant he had made a reservation for.
how would the future be like? would your future kids share their mother’s beautiful eyes? these questions were interrupted by the ring of his phone. he almost ignored it.
the lights in his world died. it was as if the cars had stopped moving, the earth stopped spinning, and the fingers softly fidgeting with the velvet box had halted their movements completely.
he slowly opens his eyes to your side of the bed. in a barely conscious state, he reaches out for your hand, only to find the coldness of the empty blanket.
the sunlight escapes past your flowy white curtains, glowing onto the empty spot that was once your spot on the bed. though it glows beautifully, it lacked the warmth that he once saw in your eyes. like the eyes he saw on the day you first met. like the eyes he saw the first day you moved into the apartment together with no other furniture other than a shared bed.
the pair of beautifully glowing eyes that he will never see again in his life.
