The Broken Mirror
I've been working on a Pokemon fangame called The Broken Mirror for the past little while. If you enjoyed the emphasis Ham's League Club had on exploring Nemona, Arven, and Penny's characters, continuing their arcs, and just hanging out with them every day after Scarlet/Violet's DLCs didn't really deliver on that, this is kinda like that as a real standalone game -- a sequel in a new region that I'm so excited to share someday. still caring about internet friends you lost touch with years ago is so embarrassing. yeah i had a deam we met up irl recently. the last time we spoke was maybe 7-8 years ago. i still wear the laces we randomly decided was a sign of our friendship. i dont know what any of your socials are or if youre even active on any. sometimes i see someones art resemble yours and i wonder for hours. do you still go by that name you chose? whenever i see it i wonder if its you. we couldve passed each other in this vastness a thousand times and not have a clue.

I've talked before about how the "freedom" offered by the Weird Route is illusory – all you're doing is switching to a different set of rails – but I hadn't really thought about the degree to which the Mantle questline makes this clear.
For all Ramb hypes up the original version being the "right" one, allowing you to play it "your way" or whatever, it objectively offers less freedom and discovery than both of Tenna's versions. You no longer get to pursue certain objectives and ignore others, or, alternatively, pursue every objective just to get your rank up. Little bonus areas are reduced to empty caves that basically say GO NORTH TO ADVANCE CRITICAL PATH. Meanwhile, the whole thing is framed by you controlling a puppet who is in turn controlling a puppet of themself. What kind of freedom is that?

I hate explaining dog whistles to white people because they look at you like you're a goddamn conspiracy theorist. Like Lord forbid bigotry is more subtle than someone shouting "I HATE (INSERT SLUR)" to an oppressed person's face and violently beating the shit out of them.

So this morning I found out that the RPG Maker forums will be shutting down this year, and it’s really just another depressing thing to see.
If you read the link the company does of course say they’re replacing the existing forums with new ones, and I’m sure no one would say the old ones didn’t perhaps need a lil bit of a glow up, some tech debt fixing… but there’s a few key notes in there:
They are NOT carrying over any history, data messages etc. from the old forums
They are NOT archiving, retaining or in any way saving the existing forums in any way
They have NOT provided any reasoning past ‘as part of continued efforts to support developers’
As an offhand, moderate read, this sounds to me like a desire for some change in the forums but deciding nuking everything is less expensive than rebuilding and carrying over info.
If I’m cynical, and likely realistic? Probably to increase sales of their latest GameMaker software by making it inherently more difficult for someone getting the older software for cheap pushing it to its limits. The amount of institutional knowledge on those forums is absurd.
And even if it is a benign reason, it’s still terrible because what do you mean you’re doing this with no recourse or potential for change? You sell software that runs on community goodwill? In an era where people are pulling away to open source software?? Crazy.
There are yeeeaaars of answers, plugins, suggestion, community built up on those forums - I’ve used the em to learn and grow my own skillet!!! And soon it won’t exist.
At the very least, they gave a ‘heads up’ - the deletion occurs mid December, so archiving by the community is possible from now. It’s just absurd that it needs to happen in the first place.
It’s just reflective of how the industry is right now - and why it’s so important for communities to grow and build up knowledge together, knowledge that is NOT reliant on a company that can pull the plug at any time in the very name of the very customers, users and supporters they are screwing over.
The good news is that other people are already starting external archival. Here's a couple posted on the r/RPGMaker subreddit:

when artists get rightfully upset about their art being misinterpreted, edited, stolen or even just compared to other medias, the talking point of “well what did you expect, you posted it online” sucks to hear, because god forbid people be nice, just nice, plain and simple
