I'm South Asian, and I've always depicted Theodosia Burr as South Asian, but everyone draws her as black. I want to draw her as how I depict her, but I'm scared I'll get hate for it. What should I do?
I think that as long as you state that youâre depicting these characters, that are POC, and acknowledge that importance, I donât think itâs wrong to depict Theodosia as South Asian. Part of the purpose of Hamilton was to represent POC, and you are finding POC representation in your own way. Besides, we donât know Theodosiaâs mom, in this universe, she could have been South Asian. Youâre not ignoring the importance of Hamilton or the purpose, so I think it will be okay.Â

Thanks for waiting for it⌠the HAMILTON SUPER GROUP HUG is here!
Merch here.
why is this so whitewashed thoâŚ
Sorry but I fucking hate tht post thats like âsometimes artists arent white washing!!! Skin looks lighter with different light sources so dont be rudeâ with all thos examples of color theory or connies skin under different lighting in SU like
Fuck off??? Yes skin looks different with different light sources but theres a difference in connie being under yellow light and her skin being a little lighter w yellow tint and idk people drawing overwatchâs lucio with literally every other color of his palette matching except his skin is like the color of a peach with literally nothing else indicating that idk a bright ass sun flare light source mightve been the cause of that. Which is what people are complaining ab.
Nobody complains ab light sources affecting skin if its done right. You wouldnt even notice if its done right and the surrounding background/setting/the rest of the palette fits the light source. Stop trying to excuse whitewashing/try to put words in the mouths of ppl who are getting upset for legitimate reasons.
I dunno, every single âwhitewashing,â post Iâve ever seen was a matter of the artist rendering the character a smidgen lighter than they are in canon, and three or four or even more whiny little brats jump on them about erasure.
And also, this isnât a popular opinion, but who cares if the artist whitewashes a character? Itâs okay to brownwash white characters but do the opposite and itâs suddenly bad? And no, youâre not âerasingâ these characters because itâs fanart, itâs not canon, so it doesnât matter.
Uhhh yeah im gonna need you to be quiet perhaps? Sometimes that âsmidgenâ is enough fr it to be whitewashing, and considering that all the complaints of fanart IVE seen ab it, im going to guess that our definitions of a smidgen are different lmfao
AND OH MY GOD LMAOOOO the fact that you brought up â"brownwashingââ MAKES ME NOT TAKE YU SERIOUSLY AT ALL LMFAO WHEN LIKE 99% OF CHARACTERS IN MEDIA ARE WHITE OFC ITS OKAY TO MAKE EM NON WHITEâŚ.ITS SO WE CAN FEEL GOOD AND MAYBE HAVE SOME GOOD CHARACTERS FR OURSELVES!!! ITS BAD TO WHITEWASH A DARK SKINNED CHARACTER BC ITS NOT LIKE WEâVE REACHED A POINT WHERE THERE ARE JUST AS MANY OR MORE CHARACTERS OF COLOR AS NON WHITE ONESâŚ..likeâŚif you whitewash a character theres already the likelihood that you just erasedâŚ.one of the only, if not THE ONLY nonwhite character of their canon lmfaooo whereas changing a white characters race just means you lowered the number of white characters in their canon from like 20 to 19 lmfaoo
And yes it is erasure oh my goodddd and fanart does matter!! Esp if the creator of the fanart is some racist who knows theyll be protected by bullshit statements like that!!! I wanted to type up why but i jst remembered you literally typed out the words âits okay to brownwash white characters but do the opposite and its suddenly bad?â And if you have that mindset then im just sorry for you buddy lmfao
@blakcdymond @katetheoverlord
Hi, I recently found your blog and I just want to say I appreciate the point of it although some of the comments are a bit harsh. I noticed in a previous ask that you said Hamilton is "about POC, by POC, for POC" does that mean that you think that someone who is not a person of color cannot enjoy the musical or what it stands for? I'm not asking this to be rude I just honestly want to know your opinion.
Not at all, Hamilton can be appreciated or enjoyed by anyone regardless of them being a POC or not. However, our point in saying that Hamilton is âabout POC, by POC, for POCâ is that this version, this America AU, was created to tell a certain story and purvey a certain message for POC. The majority of the people involved are people of color and having Hamilton become such a huge phenomenon on Broadway and to people who arenât quote-unquote âtheatre peopleâ is a huge chance for POC. For the first time in history, the four major categories on the Tonys were won by four POC, specifically four black people, and three of those winners won for Hamilton. Our point is that when people whitewash Hamilton and these versions of the founding fathers, theyâre completely missing or willfully ignoring the point and the cultural significance of Hamilton. Contrary to popular belief, Broadway is not this âutopiaâ of acceptance and inclusivity, however shows like Hamilton, shows that center on POC and explicitly require POC actors are helping to change that. Of course someone who is not POC can enjoy and understand Hamilton. If you understand and agree with everything Iâve just said, chances are weâre not talking about/to you. Weâre talking about the people who think itâs okay to take POC of white wash them.

@useless-mork
1) pro tip: Almost ANY photo-edited photo of an actor or famous person will be way lighter than their actual skin tone, because of systematic colorism and whitewashing. Fanartists didnât invent lightening actors skin tones!
2) Even considering that, the photos you sent donât match up with their real skin/hair. But I used some more accurate ones when i did the comparison sheets.
Do you see how the actorsâ hair is black? Do you see how their skin tones are not peachy and are darker than original? Do you see how blatantly some of this has been whitened?
also youâre an anti sjw who calls feminism a cancer im screaming

I just wana apologize for how I acted in my earlier ask, I don't like seeing artists get bashed. I was a little to aggressive in that ask and I am fully aware how much the ethnic and cultural diversity of Hamilton means to many people and especially LMM.
honestly, because you are white, your opinion on hamilton and this blog never really mattered to begin with. if an artist white washes, then they open themselves up to criticism, and if you consider that to be âbashingâ then so be it.Â
and you should also try and rethink your last statement and the pedestal youâve placed lmm on.
@ all of my white mutuals, every single one of you, this is directed towards you:
please be critical of the fanart you reblog and make sure it isnt whitewashed, if you want to reblog it PLEASE PUT COMMENTARY THAT IT IS WHITEWASHED thank you. too much ive been seeing whitewashed fanart on my dash lately from all sorts of fandoms with very little if any criticism.
Imagine being a kid in school. Your teacher comes up with an idea for class picture. Every student will draw pictures of their friends.
Everyone starts drawing enthusiasticly, and canât wait to see what they look like in the drawings. When pictures are ready you notice that popular students have more pictures than rest, but nobody has done a drawing of you. The teacher notices that too, and asks if someone would do your picture. To your horror the class clown takes the job, and comes up with a caricature of you. Others are laughing, but youâre not. You feel awful. The teacher notices that. and asks again someone to do a drawing of you. One of the âgood studentsâ starts drawing, but the result is forced. Itâs just a drawing of a generic child wearing a shirt of same color as you a wearing. Thereâs no spirit, no soul in it. You start sensing that the class is geting frustrated with you. They want to be done with this. You ask quietly the teacher if you could do a drawing yourself.
After school your classmates confront you. Why did you have to make such a big deal out of it? The first picture was funny. The second picture was just fine! The drawing you did yourself wasnât right, do you think you are that good-looking? There were other kids who got only one or two pictures of themselves. Who are you to demand special treatment? Maybe there would have been a picture of you if you werenât such annoying baby, nobody likes you anyway, and nobodyâs going to if you keep on being like that, you donât deserve a drawing!
This could be story of bullying, but itâs also about how I see portraying LGBTQ+-people and PoC in mainstream entertainment.
Thanks to Fandoms and Feminism for inspiration!
This is a great metaphor.Â
This is the most accurate fucking post Iâve ever seen in my life oh my god.
I don't understand this blog like at all? Like I get if you wanted to point out white washing if they were drawings of the person themselves but you honestly shouldn't be pouring out white washing of founding fathers who legitimately were white. Sometimes it blends over into Hamilton fan art and you need to chill. This is art people are making for fun or by request, this isn't a magazine that millions of people are going to see. Stop getting offended by everything.
The literal point of Hamilton is that itâs people of color telling a story that white people wrote. Itâs people we didnât get to see telling the side of the story we werenât taught. The creator/writer/lead actor isnât white. The cast is not white. The crew is largely not white. The fan art that people create is not founding fathers fan art, itâs Hamilton fan art, and it uses Hamiltonâs costumes and lines and is completely Hamilton, and yet they decide to white wash characters that are not white. Thatâs the difference, the founding fathers may have been white, but the characters in Hamilton are not, and when they are drawn as anything but who they are, it is white washing. Anyone paying attention to the story of Hamilton or Lin Manuel Miranda would know that race and ethnicity and culture are very important, to Lin, to Hamilton, to everyone, and white washing that is spitting on the purpose of Hamilton. Hamilton is not for white people, which is very clear if you are paying any attention at all.Â
Racism isnât âfor fun.â You need to wake up.Â

So I know there is more than one mod and maybe not all the mods are doing this but maybe you should try to put a little humor in the criticism so some artists aren't offended. I'm not cuz I literally drew white people but there might be some starting artists who get discouraged easily.
whereâs the humor in racism, even if it is accidental?
