Being or having been a student the American public education system absolutely entitles you to have whatever opinions or reflections about the system you hold in your heart. But whew there are a lot of people here speaking on pedagogy whose base level understanding for why they did anything they did in school clearly has not advanced past “my teacher made me do this task or think this way or write this thing for no reason other than she’s a bitch”
“Why did I have to do worksheets/comprehension questions” Making sure you understand the basic factual content of something is really important before moving on. Incentivizes a closer reading of the text than you otherwise would have taken with built in scaffold of things to look for the answer to while reading. Processing your thoughts through writing helps them stick better than just reading.
“Why is there lecture” In terms of efficiently establishing facts to get everyone on the same baseline there aren’t many better ways to use class time. Everyone needs to be on the same page about The Facts before you go and practice a skill.
“Why is there homework” so you could practice what you learned in preparation for next class.
“Why didn’t they teach xyz” they DID teach you the skills to recognize the gap in your knowledge and be able to rectify it. Education and literacy are the keys to self-sufficiency and not having to just believe the things people tell you. You are never limited to just the content you learn in school when you have all the critical thinking and research skills you learned as well.
“Why did teacher insist on their interpretation of the text” When you’re teaching a skill (how to substantiate an argument by looking for slash analyzing evidence) the content (the interpretation) should be familiar or given out so that you can focus on building what matters. Vice versa when teaching content. They could also just be right.
“Why can’t things be more engaging/fun” some things will never be as fun as phone. A nonzero but hopefully minimal part of education is always going to be making people do things they would not otherwise want to do. Coping with being bored is itself a life skill.
“Why did I have to ask permission to leave the room” Teacher is legally responsible for your well being and needs to know where you are and how long you’ve been out in case there is an emergency.
