This is my favorite sketching exercise. Finding an illumination depicting something crazy and interpreting it into my style. It also usually leads down a fun research funnel. When I first saw this 15th c French illumination, I assumed it could be some standard gory saint sacrifice. In fact, this is a “contemporary” depiction of Dido’s suicide, probably to accompany Virgil’s Aeneid. In this story Dido, Queen of Carthage is so heart broken over Aeneas’s departure that she gathers his belonging atop a funeral pyre and flings herself upon his sword as he sails away to war. Peak male fantasy. Virgil wrote this story almost 700 years after Dido’s time. The earliest mentions we have of her name dates to 260 BC, 500 years after her life. However, there are sources from closer to her time that speak of a Queen who fled Tyre (Lebanon) to found the new city of Carthage in modern day to Tunisia. What is sure, is that the founding of Carthage around the 800s BC does not align with the Trojan War dated to the 12th-14th C BC.
