elphaba praying to saint glinda and then spending seven years at the cloister of saint glinda is so. like i know we talk about it all the time but we really don't talk enough about how insane of a choice that was on gregory's part

cuz you have 18 y/o elphaba who decides she can't bear to go back to shiz and she has to abandon everything she knows to fight the wizard. and despite being all like "i'm going down" she still kisses glinda goodbye and begs her to hold out. and somewhere along the way, or maybe at that moment, elphaba gets it in her head that she can't be a person and she actively has to deny her personhood for this whole freedom fighting terrorist thing to work out. but since the chapel of st glinda seems to be where the rebels meet to exchange information, every time she goes there she's reminded of the girl she left behind

obviously elphaba's an atheist, but while she waits for informants or whatnot she has to be inconspicuous, so she spends a lot of time on her knees at the oratory. and elphaba doesn't pray to any gods, but she probably thinks about glinda and her final request for glinda to hold out for her. she probably wonders how glinda's doing, if she'll ever be able to forgive elphaba for leaving, if she'll honor elphaba's last request and wait for her to return. and even though elphaba's convinced herself that she can't be a person, she prays and prays that glinda will hold out for her and she'll be able to see her on the other side of it all
