Hey y’all! Laura again. Don’t worry, I hate me too... Anyway, HERE’S HADLEY! She’s a 31 year old Madison native, the twin sister of @addison-mcdaniel and teaches English to 10th-12th graders.

His charming grin shined bright on his face when she said his name. Luke Davenport was far from a shy man, and he truly enjoyed the reaction he got out of each woman he met. There was this boyish charm about him that he relied on to get away with it too. In Luke’s mind if he wasn’t hurting anyone, everything he did was fine. “Can’t help the way rumors spread, you know that.” He replied easily, the rumor mill in town certainly would be at full force this weekend, he assumed. Luke intended not to get caught as one of the couples sneaking off to a closet. “Somethin’ embarrassin’ you say? Those are my favorite things to hear, how ‘bout I ask your mama all about her night so far?”  He smirked, making his less than angelic intentions clear, “Or you could distract me with a dance, not too much trouble, is it?”

“Yeah, well, they spread faster every time you run your mouth,” she grumbled under her breath more than anything. Luke wasn’t a jerk by any means, and Hadley’s main issue with this entire situation was that Luke Davenport always seemed to get her flustered. She couldn’t help it, she’d thought he was cute forever, and it didn’t help that he knew that. “Oh, uh uh, you’re not hearin’ any embarrassin’ stories about me, not tonight, not ever.” Hadley’s bottom lip tucked itself up under her teeth as she considered the options. “Fine, a dance it is. I’m flattered you asked, Luke,” she finally said, eyes still holding a bit of worry. 

Liam looked up from the quizzes he was grading, a little smile touching his lips as Hadley just plopped casually onto his desk. He couldn’t help but laugh at Hadley’s story, shaking his head. “I know it’s probably bad, but I just let them text,” he said. “As long as they’re not being disruptive. Either they can handle the material anyway, or they can’t and it’ll come back to haunt them later on.” He smiled softly. “Pretty good, thanks,” he said. “Although I have no idea what I’m gonna make for dinner and I’m running against the clock a bit here. How are you?”

“Yes, but you’re older than I am,” she teased, scrunching her nose in his direction. “You have a certain level of respect given to you because of your old age. I’ve got to set boundaries now, lest they think I’m some kind of cool teacher who can be easily swayed. First it’s texting, then I’ll have kids skipping class or worse! They’ll turn in assignments and expect me not to actually grade them!” She held the faux look of shock for as long as possible, which was not to say very long at all. “Lasagna. That’s what you should have for dinner. Aww, man, now I want lasagna for dinner. I’m doing okay other than this hankering for lasagna that just struck me. Life in a small town sure does keep you on your toes.” 

“I haven’t but that’s only because if she’s avoiding me.. is she really going to want to see my face again?” He stated, shaking his head. “It’s alright. I did buy her flowers and had them sent to her house– they were her favorite flowers. I hope that was enough to send a message to her. I don’t want to bombard her at work,” Nev shrugged. “I saw her walking on the street the other day and I think she saw me and ran into a store in the opposite direction,” he replied. “It’s only been awhile but I’ll give it some time before I muster up the courage to go talk to her myself.”

Hadley listened carefully, taking a couple bites of pie before she sat the fork down and laced her fingers together in front of her. This sort of thing was only one of the many reasons Hadley had always chickened out when it came to sleeping with someone. There were plenty of other reasons, of course, but the awkwardness of sleeping with a friend and things ending badly? That was close to the top. “Okay,” she said slowly, taking another slow breath. “So, what I’m hearing is that the two of you may have crossed a line without discussing it, and while there’s nothing wrong with that, it definitely can be awkward. I think you can let it go for a few days, but I also think talking to her is the right thing. Maybe try a letter, that’s romantic! Tell her you don’t want things between you to end badly. She might like that!” 

Sabrina’s rage never simmered down as quickly as it did when the words ‘debate team’ came from Ari’s lips. Immediately her warped countenance smoothed into one of intrigue, index finger raising to tap her chin in genuine consideration. “Well maybe we’re being too rash” she conceded, sinking back into the space beside Ari and draping an arm around her shoulders. Sabrina could admit it was wrong to suddenly find value in the young man because it was revealed that he had academic worth. However, if she was forced to pass judgement on her darling Adriana’s possible suitor she would at least find solace in the knowledge that he held some semblance of intelligence. It was what she deserved. Regardless anyone who dared let the inkling of interest settle in their brain towards the girl would have three fierce mother hens to get through. 

“I mean, he can’t be too devious. He’s on the debate team after all and the swim team, that’s going to look impeccable on his college application…” she trailed off upon realizing that she’d gone off topic and completely veered from the entire point of the discussion. “Right right, priorities. Over night trip, bad. Here’s a thought” she rushed out, switching gears. “If she’s insistent on going and your resolve is crumbling, we take on a stipulation for approval” there was a pause as she let anticipation rise. “We meet him, obviously. If he’s harboring ill intent there’s absolutely no way he can fool all three of us.”

Arielle felt the tension beginning to bear down on her shoulders and reach down her spine. This day was destined to come but she blissfully ignored it. They had collectively raised a well rounded, level headed young woman but that didn’t change the impact of hormones and peer pressure. Adrianna didn’t need anyone’s approval but high school was divisive for young minds that don’t yet have the capability to make just decisions. Decision that were bigger than what color dress to wear to the prom or who you allow into your heart. “I just want to be like my parents who were unwavering and one minded. They said no and I pushed back–” she paused with a sigh. “Sure my act of rebellion gave me Adi and she’s the best part me but I can’t say that I want that life for her.” Leaning into the supports that radiated from Sabrina and Hadley, she squeezed their hands. 

“Jesus isn’t even safe enough for her, Hads, but she’s sixteen and her heart and head aren’t working in tandem.” Arielle’s jaws tensed at the college bred ruffian in question. Arielle’s father was the wet dream for colleges: equally smart and athletic. She thought that those things mattered in some way to gauge his goodness or character but the swing of the door and his receding shadow was what really mattered. “Brina, you may be on to something. What if he dazzles us all but is still the devil? I know she’ll hate it because we’re, mainly me, is embarrassing but a little embarrassment isn’t a bad thing, right?”

“I know I don’t have a leg to stand on here, but honestly, what kind of nightmare are we signing up for? What if she sleeps with him and then he breaks her heart?” Hadley, usually quite the optimist, was only brought to this kind of thinking when it came to Arielle’s daughter. Their daughter, really, the three of them had practically raised her together. Even when she was off at school, Hadley knew more about Adrianna’s life than her own brothers’ most days. “Okay, so say we let her go, and say they do have sex... Is it wrong of us to give her the kind of safe sex advice that Brina’s always going on about?” Again, Hadley felt out of her league. She knew she should swallow back the churning feeling in her gut and let the girl live, but more than anything, Hadley wanted to protect the teenager. “Also, you’re right, honey, you’re definitely the most embarrassing one. But A will forgive you for it someday, then she’ll be super glad she had such a cool pair of aunts.” @sabrinaelliott​ @ariellexkane​

Avery laughed to Hadley’s ideas, “Honestly, those the second suggestion really might be the way to go.” She teased, knowing all and well that she would never be able to actually consider an idea like that. Her nose wrinkled at the thought, “Oh, I couldn’t even imagine,” she shook her head, laughing more. It was in that moment shew as thankful that she lived alone. It’s not like she hadn’t watched children before, but if she was watching them, there was no chance she was getting any action on the same night for anything to go wrong. “She still maintaining that after all these years?” Avery asked with a soft smile, “I know some grow out of it.” 

“Honestly, there’s a lot I’d do for Adrianna, but if she ever caught me havin’ sex, I’d have to ship her off to boarding school like some kind of wicked step mom from the movies,” she teased. It wasn’t at all something she’d consider, and the likelihood of the girl catching Hadley in any kind of compromising position was even less likely. “Yeah, you know Addi, she’s all bark and no bite... But don’t go tellin’ her I said that. I think between me, Sabrina and Ari, we’ve got a nice balance of snarky attitude and sweet southern hospitality.” 

“You know how Bo-mi was my date for the Belle Ball. Well, that night I ended up kissing her– I couldn’t help myself. I knew she was getting a little overwhelmed from the crowd, so, we stepped outside in the garden and asked her to dance there because we could still here the music. Next thing, I know I’m kissing her and after that, I’m waking up in an empty bed. We ended up having sex, and now she’s avoiding me.”

Hadley had noticed Nev and Bo-mi at the ball, and she’d been dying to ask him how it all ended up going. The way he spoke about it, though, had her wondering what could possibly go wrong. “She’s avoidin’ you?” Reaching out, Hadley gave his arm a squeeze. “Nev, I’m sorry. That’s really tough. Have you tried goin’ over to her house? Goin’ to see her at the elementary school? How much ‘avoiding’ are we talkin’ here?” 

Luke easily made his way around the ball, socializing, smiling, and taking the stray sister or other girl for a dance. He’d already danced with Kenzie nearly four times. Stealing her away from Tate had become a source of amusement for him. In no bad way, Luke was on the lookout for the next woman he’d try to sway for a dance. And boy did his eyes light up when he saw none other than Hadley McDaniel. The McDaniel twins were possibly his favorite two to talk to in town, and his favorite between the two always rotated. “You know you don’t gotta run into me to catch my attention.” He immediately stated, playful smirk on his lips as he glanced at a server who had spotted the broken glass and was already coming over to clean it up. “How about you let me do the carrying?” He didn’t wait for an answer, instead hooking his fingers through the two glasses she had and snatching another off a tray as a server walked by.

Of course the man in front of her was Luke Davenport. It was the only possible explanation for why such a bothersome thing would happen to her. “Luke Davenport,” Hadley said with a smile that was far too confident for how she was really feeling. “You’re such a gentleman, helpin’ me out like this,” she said as he grabbed the third glass. “But I wasn’t runnin’ in to you on purpose, don’t go spreadin’ that rumor.” She took a couple steps to catch up to him before pointing in the direction of where her mother was sitting. “Let’s just go drop these off and scoot on out of my momma’s sight before she goes and says somethin’ embarrassing, okay?” Hadley’s pulse was racing, hoping that Luke wouldn’t do what he usually did, which involved a lot of flirting with her and making Hadley feel awful flustered. 

Plopping onto Liam Stuart’s desk shouldn’t have been such a natural thing to do. After all, he was a coworker, not someone she’d known her entire life, but Hadley McDaniel didn’t really worry too much about all of that. “So, I’m sitting there in third hour and Phillip Lawrence, you know him? I think his brother, Daniel, is in your class. Anyway, Phillip’s over there textin’ away and finally I asked if he wanted to share with the class what was so funny and he played the whole ‘oh nothing’ card. I was like ‘Phillip, I know you’re textin’, hun, nobody looks at their crotch and laughs for twenty minutes.’ He turned beat red, but I bet his momma gives me a call tomorrow whinin’ about me callin’ her son out like that.” Rolling her eyes, Hadley crossed her legs and looked over to where Liam was standing. “How’s your day goin’?”

Avery listened to Hadley’s story with wide eyes. “Oh my!” She gasped, pressing a hand over her mouth as she laughed. “That, I cannot,” she shook her head, “Kids are really impressionable,” she knew that and the laughter kept on spilling over her lips at the thought of this kid imitating all the noises. “If I ever have any kids, I really hope that doesn’t ever happen,” Avery admitted as her laughter died down. She knew there was always a chance but at that story, that’s all she needed her own future kid going around and doing was telling it with all the sounds down to a T. “Comes with the territory,” she nodded her head, “Though some of us certainly more than others,” she teased. 

“Right? I definitely can’t imagine being in their shoes. What happens if your kid walks in while you’re... You know? Like, do you have to start over? Make new kids and send that one off to Antarctica?” Hadley shuddered at the thought. “Oh, I live with a teenager, now that I think about it. That would be even worse, right? Them knowing and you having to face them after being caught? Gross!” She wasn’t exactly the queen of sexual encounters as it was, and often, Hadley wondered if she’d ever get to a point where that sort of thing was a normal part of her life. She really hoped, for all parties involved, that it never needed to be addressed with a kid. “I mean, we can’t all live up to Addi’s level of brattiness. It’s truly next level.”

Avery couldn’t help but laugh softly at Hadley’s comment. It was typical for most to say they lacked the patience for kindergarten kids. They were wild, rowdy and most of all, they liked sticking gum in places that it shouldn’t be. For the most part, that gum ended up in little girls’ hair and by now, Avery had nearly perfected how to get it out. Seven years into teaching though, and her students were incredibly capable of surprising her. “That’s got to be somethin’ else to see,” she shook her head. “These kids are almost too open,” she laughed, wrinkling her nose at the thought. “A shame they came back all closed up,” she thinned her lips, “they really are notorious for that,” she gave Hadley a small smile, “I swear I was never that way, but my mom would beg to differ.” She laughed softly, “She says I was just as moody as the rest of ‘em.” Her laugh grew as she brought her fingers to her lips, throwing away a key that didn’t exist. “Your secret is safe with me.” 

“Oh, I remember one time, I was nannyin’ this girl in college and she was around this age. She told me all about how she caught her mommy and daddy havin’ a pillow fight in bed one night and how Daddy kept saying all sorts of stuff. She had the noises down to a T.” Hadley couldn’t help but laugh as she recalled the event, remembering the awkwardness of having to relay that info to the mother over the phone later that day. “Oh, I don’t think you were too moody back in school. At least, no moodier than most of us, I’d reckon.” 

“Oooh, that was a good mom impression.” Addi laughed, shaking her head as she tossed back what was left of her drink, setting the glass down for the bartender to take it away. “It’s all in the confidence, darlin’. You could get anybody you wanted if you’d just believe that you can.” The ways in which Addi and her twin sister differed were a stark contrast but she knew that underneath all of Hadley’s nerves was a fierce woman who could conquer anything. “You did not just say bust a move I know you did not.” Addi scrunched up her nose and rubbed at her temples a moment. “God Hads you are so uncool it hurts me.” She teased her sister all the time about being a dork but it was all in good fun, and if Addi ever heard anyone else say that shit about Hadley they’d be walking away with a black eye. “How are we twins? Honestly?”

“I know, I’m so good at it that it’s scary,” Hadley laughed. “Who says I want anybody anyway?” Hadley wasn’t big on getting guys just because she could. That was much more of Addison’s thing. Hadley avoided relationships like the plague, keeping guys at arm’s length so that they couldn’t hurt her, couldn’t get close enough to want things she wasn’t willing to give. “Of course I did, goon,” Hadley said with a laugh. “If I was supposed to be cool, you should have told me a little sooner. I’ve been a dork my whole life.” Hadley grabbed Addison’s hand in her own, giving it a squeeze. “You sucked up all the cool juice from me in the womb, sis, that’s how you got so great.”
