it sucks that the overwhelming majority of medical messaging around salt/sodium is "evil poisonous substance that you're definitely already eating way too much of," because like. you do still need it. (trust me, as a POTS-haver, I've had to completely rewire my own brain about salt.) and you need more salt when the entire northern hemisphere is hot enough to fry an egg on. ever tried sucking down the recommended 64oz of hydration per day entirely as water, only to find you're peeing constantly without any of the purported benefits of being "hydrated"? assuming you don't have another medical condition that causes frequent urination, your body probably needed more salt/electrolytes to be able to hold onto that water and make use of it. if there was ever a time to keep a sports drink/pedialyte/etc within constant reach, it's when the heat index is 110°F/43°C.

i think we should start openly mocking male creatives who can't figure out how to write women. like actually i think it's embarrassing that it took elliot page transitioning for christopher nolan to give him a good role. why did it take like ten years to get the first female lead in a marvel movie? why is it a Known Fact that stephen king can't write women? why is 50% of the population omitted from large ensemble works? i asked my friend to name a movie directed by a man with a majority female cast and he said ghostbusters 2016. ghostbusters. ghostbusters. g
really, really beautiful to look at and i wish we got to see it on the big screen!!
the backgrounds were gorgeous and i loved the dramatic tableau style of so many of the shots, esp in the prologue
none of the gang felt OOC which was a bigger relief than i thought it would be, but i think i was holding my breath after the comics. it all felt natural and i didn’t doubt for a moment that it was those characters
for instance i really liked how normal and sweet and tempered and adult the dynamic between katara and aang was
it’s genuinely thrilling to see this set of grade 1 blorbos walking and talking in their young adult form. like the version of them you’ve been reading and writing in fic and headcanons for years is finally there before you
even though i was bored by the plot, i like that it served the theme of aang grappling with what the legacy of the air nomads should be and ultimately how to navigate his unique grief and the guilt/shame wrapped up around it. that fathomless sense of loss and what-if as a result of war and political violence, and the bind it can put someone in, is one of my favourite themes—the fact that it’s taken up and taken seriously is one of the things that made the protagonist and the show stand out to me in the first place. so it’s not one i’ll tire of!
even though the art style makes everyone a bit more uniform in the face than i’d have liked, i liked their hot adult designs. love zuko’s hair up and katara’s hair down
katara literally bringing everyone back to life because of course. she felt the most realised alongside aang and i came away really wanting more of her and feeling proud of her
the erasure of zuko as a cofounder of republic city whenever they talk about it undermines the zukaang agenda, but the queer zuko soft-launch (as i chose to see it) will tide me over
avatar sonam—such a cool design, whose opulence and vibrancy really reflected the ‘golden age of airbending’ concept (omg her glider!). (i’ve always loved the idea of in-universe anthropology and historiography, and this slice of the past is very fun from that perspective). also the concept of a lost avatar who’s shrouded herself out of regret paints such a succinct psychological picture even though we don’t know her personally
this early republic city has good vibes—it really feels like the less depressing alt!lok version i try to imagine if i venture into that part of the timeline
the other stuff
it was sort of net-zero character progression in the way nostalgia-bait often is. i would have loved to learn a bit more about who any of them really are and what they’re up to at this stage in life (even aang, outside of the particular aforementioned theme). it’s a huge part of the reason that, substance-wise, it felt like a protracted tv episode rather a movie
the other reason is that the plot was not fresh or like… consequential enough. nice lore but the actual story, in terms of mechanics and players, was a generic hash of stuff that has been done before, often quite a bit, in the franchise (the gaang trusts a radicalised person with ulterior motives, x nation supremacy, militant nonbenders, big juiced up spirit fight, randos and also a beefy extremist get airbending, etc etc).
some of this familiar material was clearly to bridge atla with lok but that just didn’t help it feel unique or arresting enough to be the Feature Film Debut. seems like they could easily have explored something that isn’t so railroaded by future events the way airbenders/bending is
all of that to say… there was something sort of perfunctory about the film where it’s safely reintroducing you to the franchise’s schtick. hopefully that is avatar studios finding their feet and less likely to be the case with future instalments. but you can really feel them feeling the constraints of this part of the timeline, which is unfortunate bc they will need to branch out soon in terms of the style and material or it’ll get stale—one reason i’m cautiously intrigued by the big shakeup of the seven havens premise
maybe i’m just not an action person but i would probably have traded some of the big action set pieces (especially giant technicolour spirit fight, an element i always find hard to follow or care about) for some more interpersonal developments or even non-voiceover worldbuilding. there’s just not enough of that for the runtime because we’re spending it in fights
overall, it was mid with some important exciting features by virtue of the medium and visual artistry. which made it improbably enjoyable for a late-stage avatar franchise instalment 👍
the extended atla franchise is really proof for why an IP-based approach to art does not work because while it is true that michael dante dimartino and bryan konietzko Created atla, it should be clear from the quality of the rest of the installments in the franchise with their name/stamp of approval on it that they were not the deciding factor in the quality of the original show. in fact, many if not Most of the series best episodes were written by head writer aaron ehasz and his then-wife elizabeth welch. neither of theses two have the Right to make more avatar even though they're a big part of what Made It in the first place.
ehasz then went out to put out 'the dragon prince' for netflix which was not a show i was crazy about but i think i feel pretty confident in calling it better than legend of korra.
now what's also notable about this situation is that ehazs is a notorious enough misogynist to have a section of his wikipedia page devoted to his alleged professional mistreatment of women
elizabeth on the other hand has absolutely no presence online whatsoever. ATLA is her only writing credit. She wrote eight episodes of the show including Zuko Alone, The Avatar and the Fire Lord, and The Southern Raiders. She and aaron are now also divorced.
Now, if you know anything about how misogynist male creatives working in the same field as their wives operate, then you can probably reach the same conclusion I have. If a man is willing to treat female coworkers like his nanny and assistant as a baseline, imagine what he feels entitled to expect from a female coworker that is also his wife. I would not be surprised if much of the work on ATLA that ehasz was able to build his career off of would not have been nearly as good without a lot of behind the scenes assistance from elizabeth.
so of the 4 people mentioned here, the one with the absolute least claim of any entitlement to the Intellectual Property of the avatar franchise is overwhelmingly likely to be the most responsible for the meaningful character and narrative writing that caused ATLA to even earn enough accolades to be worth franchising in the first place.

I do think the ability to emoji-react is a net win for human communication. not only does it give you an outlet for 'I see and acknowledge this but don't have a verbal response' but it also adds a pleasing alethiometer element to things
my coworker announces that he's off to the dentist. someone reacts with a tooth emoji. is this a statement of dentist solidarity? a wish for my coworker to return with more (or fewer?) teeth than he set out with? simple word association? who can say
yk guys I think a lot of ppl when arguing against the death penalty go for a like "people don't deserve death, etc" view and I get why ppl argue for that I rly do! but it doesn't matter. I don't trust the government to do it, I don't trust them to decide who should die, I don't trust them to determine who is mentally competent, I don't trust them to not be bigoted and discriminatory in their practices, I don't trust them to have the right people, I don't trust them to execute it in a humanitarian way. and I've had discussions with ppl who otherwise have similar viewpoints to me in many ways but can think of people they think deserve to die, and I think if abolishing the death penalty is like, a super important cause to u the same way it is to me, the argument u use shouldn't be "well these people deserve to live" (although in some cases I think yeah the death penalty is done to people who totally don't "deserve it") because that's so subjective, it should be "do you trust the government to do it?" like, do you trust the people who cant even fill potholes on your road to determine who should and should not live
