“Of the small form factor first series I’m still missing the Bee Gee fuzz. Prices crept up on those while I wasn’t looking, but some of the hopeful offers on Reverb are a joke.
For various reasons these never got much traction - although they do sound good. No external power on the Sustainer or Phase II - both are 18v, so requiring two 9v batteries. There is input power on the Flanger, but it is optimised for the old unregulated ACA adaptor. With a 9v battery it’s fine, but there’s a little circuit inside that drops external power by 3v. Fine with the unregulated adaptor that put out more volts than advertised at low amps, but a modern 9v supply gets dropped to 6v, at which point the pedal won’t perform properly and may be why this great pedal is not more popular.
To power this pedal correctly, or any Boss pedal that was designed for the old Boss 9v ACA adaptor, a modern 12v supply should be used.
The BF1 sounds excellent when fully juiced and is the flanger Neil Young has used for many years (along with a Mutron Octave Divider, the green MXR Analog Delay, Echoplex and Fender Reverb Unit)
The Sustainer is a “dirty compressor” - good for lead guitar. It is thought to have been copied by Colorsound for the Supa Sustain and by moonlighting Colorsound designers for the Dharma Sound Sustainer. The boards are different to look at, but iirc they do sound similar.
