A warden brought a worker and a prisoner to an unoccupied room to punish them for their behavior. The worker was under the impression that only the prisoner would be disciplined. The warden asked the worker, “Could you get two gas canisters, while I set up?” While the warden waited for the worker to return, he put his air tank on his back, his mask over his face, and strapped it tight. He connected the air hose to his mask, feeling the fresh air fill his lungs. Then he set the prisoner into the chair and waited for the worker to come back.
When the worker entered the room with a gas mask in hand, the warden sneered, "Oh, you won't be needing that," as he threw it outside the door and locked it. The warden said to the concerned worker, "Unlock that door and your situation becomes much worse." The warden grabbed the worker's arm, pulled him towards the prisoner, and explained: "I am going to have you stand near the prisoner and hold this tray with a gas canister on it, and if it falls over, you will be in even more trouble." Then the warden pulled the pin on one of the canisters and brought it towards the prisoner's face and waited in anticipation for what was about to begin.
The canister began to hiss, and gas billowed out. The prisoner began to cough and tried to squirm out of the chair, but the warden kept the prisoner feeling the full wrath of his punishment. The worker began to feel it as well, with him coughing and slowly having difficulty balancing the tray and staying upright. As the gas continued to spray more and more, the prisoner’s struggle weakened, and the worker went to his knees, and the canister tipped over. The warden's canister finally ran out of gas, and the area began to clear as the warden saw the worker on the floor. He said, after seeing his sorry state, “I guess you will need more practice resisting gases, so why not use this next canister for your punishment.” The warden then called some other workers to haul out the prisoner and began preparing for what was next.
The warden sat down in the chair and told the worker, while smirking behind his mask, “For your practice, I will have you hold the canister and have me be your test subject.” The worker then pulled the pin with bated breath. The gas began falling harmlessly over the warden’s mask. However, the worker began coughing again and became more unsteady. The warden could see through the cloud of gas that the worker was backing up, holding his head back. The warden then pulled the worker in and said, “You will need more experience than that.” The worker’s suffering was evident in his shaking hands and every desperate small sound he made. In time that could not come soon enough from the worker’s perspective, the gas stopped. Finally, the warden stated: “Well, I think it's time to take you to the med bay; you have learned enough.”
